Thank you for your great, low-key tour of a really beautiful "woody". Nothing else is like a well-thought-out, [ obviously from lots of sea-miles ], finely-crafted wood sailing vessel. What beautiful lines ! Fair winds, for decades, and decades...
The level of craftsmanship is obviously of the highest order. This is as much a work of art as it is a sailing vessel. No doubt the maintenance effort/cost would be commensurate with the quality. If I could, I would take her in a heartbeat, never mind all the naysayers about any practical shortcomings. Worth the price just for the quality of the build. Bilges still dry from the looks of her. Stunning.
This looks to be the perfect "tool" to explore the PNW cruising grounds it resides in. The wind and weather here doesn't often cooperate for using outdoor helm positions. Having a comfortable indoor helm position extends one's season and increases comfort. Additionally, the PNW weather also doesn't allow for a lot of sailing. Having a bit of a motor sailor is a pretty good feature. For 37', there is a lot of boat there!!
Beautifully crafted vessel and I agree - interior colours are wonderful. Very light and airy interior. I can’t imagine how many hours this thing took to build.
Looks like a concept craft that would not be built but features of the concept would be integrated in other ordinary yachts. I feel fortunate just to see this yacht!
This is a stunningly beautiful and well designed boat. As your followers have pointed out, there are some real issues. However, if I had the fare, I could easily overlook the fact that this is a wooden boat. I would gladly make some practical alterations, and proudly sail this boat around the world. I will be watching for more of his designs. He gets an A+.
I love it ... and I've always had that idea of a bath hidden under a bench seat cause its storage and then once in a while when u want a hot bath move the storage out real quick and have a soak.
Crazy level of craftsmanship. Probably worth every penny of its asking price, considering the amount of labor and materials invested in it. From a practical standpoint, the market for the boat is going to be extremely limited. Someone will need to have the funds to do the ongoing maintenance that this lovely wooden boat will require. One criticism is the narrow side decks. Love to see those widened by even just a few inches.
Really wonderful design and very nice layout for the interior. Having the pilothouse as the salon means you have so much less claustrophobia then traditional layouts. With those settees down forward you have the choice not available otherwise as to where you would be more comfortable. Imagine this in a 40 to 45 foot boat!
I’ve never sailed before but I have seen other videos of sailboats that are more modern with all the bells and whistles. Why is this boat a “Holy Cow?”
By far this boat is “simply beautiful “ built simple and built beautiful!!! Most beautiful boat you ever toured that I have seen. The question how do I afford it? :(
Beautiful piece of art....the attention to detail is self evident...the only thing left to do, is add solar, perhaps a small generator, and for me I would have to have A/C...Canada does have very hot summers...but an ice free harbour in Victoria where year round boaters lay up for winter. Just surprised I didn't see a stern roller for tying up when anchored up in the Rain Forest....l would probably add to the electronics pkg. ie A.I.S. and depth sounder, perhaps a bow thruster. The Bilges were dry as a bone and very clean....
Beautiful boat, but once again, for that cost, the options for a true bluewater vessel with all the bells and whistles is enormous. Definitely for someone that has so much money they don't know what to do with it.
knew exactly where you were when it cut to the drone shot. west point marina by bc ferries or North Saanich Marina but their pretty much connected. so many superb boats there
A beautiful vessel. I could even put up with the double end design. Love the retractable sprit, and the house. The 4-108 is more like 40 hp on a good day and underpowered for this 28k# boat with broad beam and windage. Even that could be remedied in the future. But I could never own this vessel. The wood construction is a labor of love. that is a love to work your butt off and bleed your wallet in maintenance. It you kept it in high latitudes it would help. But yeah, beautiful.
If the boats been built with the wood Epoxy resin coated and glass inside and out as required she will be good for decades.. on deck if the epoxy it over coated with UV resistant varnish she will stand up to the elements for quite a few years before re coating given the experience of Wharram cats and luxury UK wooden boat builders.
@@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 Yes, IF properly done. But I have just seen so many older boats of this construction delaminating and rotting underneath.
@@roadboat9216 Fair enough but i think this one was built by an enthusiast with experience and short of accidents I would say theres a high probability of this one being a 99%er. Even if you dont like the design layout. Im not a monohull fan unless they can get in close and dry out when the tide drops.. In the uk that be a long way and for a long time and we dont have that many marinas that are not tidal either. ..at least affordably.
Our family used to have a 32’ wooden canoe style sail boat, certainly beautiful workmanship but upkeep and the time, money involved is huge beyond belief. Either steel/aluminum/fibreglass hull for me, saw our boat 40yrs after we owned it, had to be totally rebuilt in mid 80’s still was pretty though.
Very nice all around boat :)! If I was in the market I would buy It -- assuming it sails as well as it looks :)> I would remove the heater and install another bunk. Bunks for four is the usual/ necessary on this size boat. I'm not the type to do cold weather cruising. You can warm up the boat with the stove for early fall cruising. and or have a propane heater.
$1.4 million dollar boat for a mere $358k is a good deal! Beautiful boat. Reminds me of an upscale version of Sailing Magic Carpet II. Aladino-style craftmanship. Haircut looks good, too!
Seen so many boats in my life , this one is amazing for its size , just one thing could make it better ? Build it to 50’ and make the Pullman birth the main cabin ? Just my idea.
Rain Bear is an amazing boat! I read about her in Wooden Boat and Professional Boatbuilder magazines. Can't believe the owners put her up for sale after all that work.
The rig appeared to be gaff. We don't know what keel configuration either or displacement. Nice boat, classy wheelhouse design. Very much a mixture of features someone wanted and no doubt sails well off the wind.
and it is not a 1.4 m replacement cost...thats the owner thinking too highly of his own boat...plus it all wood and not even glass over wood, the upkeep on wooden and durability is just not on par with glass
Worm Gear; spiral thread engaging a circular gear. I believe this is rack and pinion but its not worm gear. Kinda looks like Port Orford cedar or Alaska Yellow Cedar, Interesting choice using softwood.
That is not a traditional "wooden boat" with all the associated maintenance headaches. That's a wood epoxy build and that's a very different animal...low maintenance, easy maintenance when needed. Having owned both molded fiberglass and wood epoxy boats, I'd take the wood epoxy boat over a production glass boat any day of the week.
Yes, I love the lines of a Fisher 37. Had one under contract, but it failed engine survey ( a very important factor on a boat like this). Fishers are well built but very choppy below decks. This boat much nicer below too. But wood? No thanks. And underpowered too.
Are you sure that's a bathtub and not just more cold storage, like a cooler you add ice to, hence the drain. Seems quite strange to stick a bathtub in the middle of the pilot house... It doesn't look like the back of the bench moves out of the way enough for someone other than a little kid, certainly not an adult....
Its for sure a cooler as a supplement for the refer/freezer in the other seat. Maybe supposed to be for fish, but I don't think you would want to be stinking up the main cabin.
Dont forget.... the USS Minnow left for just a 3 hour tour. A sudden storm, and the tiny ship was tossed. If not for the captain and crew, Gilligan all would have been lost. 😅😂😅😂,
but wouldnt be safe to sail in a gale. those pilothouse windows are not strong enough to deal with a knockdown or greed water. be a wonderful coastal boat for the right person, but there were some , ok many features that shout inexpierienced sailor , amazing craftsman at me. i think it is a beautiful space to live in however.
Quality seems impeccable, but I wouldn't keep it. Mobility on deck is minimal and outside living space dito. Don't like the gap in the bow either. Great way to take on water in heavy swells. For boat living she is perfect.
the old me of one or two uears ago was sad i couldnt afford a boat. the new me is laughing at these ridiculous owners that are letting their boats rot with sky high prices
On *this* boat design? Operated in *this* location? For many reasons it makes perfect sense to me. Permanent glass at *this* helm would obscure views at anchor or/and "kill" the usefulness of the head is just one or two of them. *Everything* has trade-offs, is a compromise; priorities. 👍🏼
it's a piece of art , but a maintenance nightmare . i had an choy lee 43 pilothouse which looked remarkable similar and there was hardly any wood on it but still 2 weeks work every spring with 2 persons ! it was kind of nice , me and my wife working away but when she passed , i found it sad and boring and sold the boat .
Fist SHE'S A STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL AND SEXY LADY! I wasn't going to leave a comment until I saw the asking price!? I was truly expecting to see the asking price double of what is being asked for her. I agree with so many others that the number 1 thing that could make her better was if she was BIGGER! Truly a out standing vessel and made bye a Truly Truly talented person! Thanks keep them coming!
Pretty but not practical. For example: Wooden hull (why oh why?) Narrow decks (can't imagine having to squeeze past that pilothouse roof in rough seas). No granny bars (can't imagine having to work at foot of mast in rough seas) Etc
You don't know whether the boat is a epoxy-glass-wood composite build or only wood. Modern wooden boats use epoxy to seal the wood from changes in moisture as well as creatures who likes to chew on wood.
@larstheu true but whether it works well or not depends on how and how well it's done. I still don't see the point. But even assuming that it's been done the right way, there are several other practical concerns that I and others have mentioned, like narrow decks, lines running through the middle of these decks, etc
Paul has a good eye, and the boat is a credit to the builder.
spectacular boat, as so often happen when the design is from Paul Gartside. Hats off

I was lucky enough to see this boat today going down the road on a trailer on its way to its new home in Southern California.

Yes this as a 45 would probably be a contender for a safe, comfortable cruiser for us.
Where I'm from, that speechlessness is preceded by just muttering "Bristol"
I love that one!
I'm about 100k short of buying this one ... But absolutely beautiful!!!
I’ve never sailed before but I have seen other videos of sailboats that are more modern with all the bells and whistles. Why is this boat a “Holy Cow?”
You know, sometimes you see something that for some 'hidden' reason stands out from the crowd
Part two. It stands out and you can't say why. Cars, buildings, women, planes you name it it's just one of those things, and I love it.
Part three. Sometimes people try too hard and lose the essence of the thing, bit like my comments!
I don’t think he really knows. It’s just wood. I don’t think the guy has done much sailing.
What ever happened to that trimaran? Give up on it?
Amazing work of art!
Cute little boat. A show piece for sure. I'd be very interested in what seasoned sailors think about it.
Beautiful cruiser. Perfect actually.
I dislike this boat so much. lol

Your right is is a great looking boat.
The saloon stove heater had two stacks. If one was for outside combustion air, that is a significant point to have made.
Very impressive.
Very pretty. Like you said a work of art.
What’s more amazing? The drawn up plan or the end result! So Gorgeous 😅
