He’s pretending he doesn’t know about her infidelity, luring her to the edge of a lake or river. “You should know by now that this could end.” He found out that it’s over. He is making terms with the cruel reality he now has to bear, which is that he was betrayed by her. Psst: (if you put on your headphones, you can hear the crickets at the beginning of the prechorus, when he sings “do you like the way the water tastes,” which is intentionally setting the scene in an outdoor, night setting). When the chorus hits, “BEWARE THE WATER” sets up the scene next to the river/lake, warning his wife to “beware the water/try not to get wet” “Teeth are dry from the wind blows.” Chino sings it with such repressed agony, almost as if he’s holding something back and not gonna give in to letting it go. Letting “what” go, you ask? Well, then the song pauses... and all you hear is the CRICKET COUNTDOWN. THEN, when he grabs her wife by the head and shoved her into the water... THAT’S when the heavy ass outro kicks in. He is drowning his wife with hate and thirst for vengeance in this final measure. This song is fucking DARK.
Headphones would not help him. He is deaf in one ear. He has both channels coming thru one ear piece, though how that works, honestly i don't know. Like if i was born with just one eye, how would someone describe depth perception to me? i think Jersh does an incredible job analyzing sounds considering this defecit. It's hard to imagine or explain to him exactly what he is missing.

I’ve always looked at this song as an ending to a marriage or relationship or simply a warning . In a sense, he’s the dangerous water, luring and pulling in someone that knows, he’s unable to be the ‘good’. There’s an attraction to the danger from people who want what they know isn’t the best choice to make.

My interpretation of the song: This is a vent song that implies impending doom, vengence, and betrayal... Hes full of vengeance and anger, and lures her to a river or pond (you can hear crickets). “Beware the water”- telling her not to get wet or fall in. “You should know by now really That this could end, really You should know I could never make it work Wake up, let's pretend, really, babe” Chino is saying she should atleast pretend that she still loves him, and he feels hopeless and that he wasnt able to make the relationship work. And hes saying “Really?” With a kind of upset tone like: “Really? Your gonna do this to me? Why are you hiding stuff from me?” Kind of vibe, and the “babe” sounds almost sarcastic and devious because he feels betrayed and sickened by her. “Do you like the way the water tastes?” Asking her if she likes it while he tells her to take sips of if, because “its coming round” hes going to drown her. “Teeth are dry, the wind blows” is when the story escalates, you can literally hear the agony and impending doom within the music and Chino’s voice. The moment is building up, his adrenaline and anger is pumping because he cant believe she is sitting there, drinking water and pretending like she never betrayed him. Then we get to the part of the song where hes constantly asking “do you like the way the water tastes?” With a “hnngh hugh” which i think the noises Chino is making is actually mocking his ex as shes gasping for air. This is also when he comes onto her. Finally we get to the pause near the ending of the song, and you hear crickets counting down.. and eventually the heavy ass and sudden outro we get. Thats when hes drowning her, and shes fighting for her life. After the heavy outro you can hear crickets again, its silent her body is floating in the dark water. You can hear tapping a few seconds before the song ends. I believe its either him regretting what he did and his footsteps as he ran away from the river/pond. It could also be the water dripping from him as he finished drowning her. This is my favorite deftones song because it sets a perfect yet dark atmosphere, and is a feeling of vengeance alot of us can relate too
As a hardcore deftones fan been watching your reaction to their songs and I'm enjoying your feedback as a first listener to all of the songs. I appreciate you taking the time to visit the many different eras of deftones. Can't really be literal on Chino's lyrics though. They are meant for you to just taken them as they mean to you. Also I think going in chronological order of albums would have helped you see the evolution sonically. I've laughed at some of your comments through the videos. Keep it up man. Love your interpretation on this one, watching them all in order. Personally, I think “the water” is addiction. The taste is dangerous, it’s a taste you like, but if you drink too much you may never get back up to the surface. That’s what the whole lyric says to me on this one, “the water” is trying to tempt him in too deep
I second this. Loathe is so good that they became my favorites along with Deftones within the first few months of listening to them. 2020 having a new Loathe album and now a new Deftones album is this year's saving grace for me.
@Rick O'Shea Two-way Mirror is definitely one of their best songs, but I wouldn't say it's their absolute best. I think A Sad Cartoon is a little bit better.

I listened to this song for the first time in a few years about a week ago and the ending blew my mind AGAIN. It's literally THAT good.
