Hi! I was wondering if you included the English translations of the Hawaiian words in your essay? Say-in italics right after..or perhaps in footnotes? I need some clarification to guide me on my essay writing soon :)
*omg i just finished ur vid and im writing rn and JUST restarted my FOURTH FULL essay (the one im actually using) the friend thing was super helpful (applying ED to Brown.... hehe why idk) so we will see
That’s awesome! Yeah, I totally understand your struggle. It’s so frustrating to have a finished essay and then start all over again because you don’t like how it sounds, but it’s honestly so rewarding when you’re able to write something you’re proud of and happy with! I’m wishing you the best of luck!!
Could you submit ur common app with different languages? I've heard mixed things. I'm including my abuelo in my story and idk if i should change his name to just 'grnadfather'. thoughts?
I used some Hawaiian words in my essays, but they were only sprinkled here and there, and I always remembered to put the English translation in parentheses immediately after the Hawaiian word. I would probably not write entirely in another language (because I think the translation would also be included in the word count, and there’s already such limited space to write), but if you would like to include some words, I don’t think that would hurt your essay - as long as you include the translation! 😊
Although I can’t make any guarantees in regards to college admissions, I believe that depending on how well you write it, anything could be a great essay topic! One of my friends wrote about his childhood experiences with caterpillars, and now he’s headed off to Harvard. As long as you’re able to share who you truly are throughout your essay and are able to make it engaging/interesting, I think you’ll have a very successful essay :)
Yeah! Here's the list of schools I was accepted to: Amherst College Arizona State University Boston University Brown University Case Western Reserve Creighton Drexel University Franklin & Marshall College Pacific University Southern Methodist University UC Davis UCLA UCSD University of Oregon University of Washington I was waitlisted at Dartmouth and Notre Dame, and sadly, I was not accepted to USC, UPenn, or UC Berkeley.
Hi! My friends and I actually started a little college advising group where we read people’s essays. It’s called Lanakila Advising! You can check it out on Instagram @LanakilaAdvising if you’re interested 😊
Hiilei Sanchez so it’s this really well-known common app essay (and i haven’t read it actually) but i believe the writer used costco - which is a super big wholesale company in certain parts of the world - as an extended metaphor and she was accepted into a lot of top colleges. you can read more about it here!: www.businessinsider.com/high-school-senior-who-got-into-5-ivy-league-schools-shares-her-admissions-essay-2016-4 To Carmen, there are so many ideas/sentences that have been “plagiarized” and Hiilei obviously was unaware of the existence of the Costco essay, therefore she could not have plagiarized it. I just read the ending of the Costco essay, and there’s literally no resemblance between that and Hiilei’s ending. Edit: I should’ve also mentioned this, but congratulations on your acceptances!! Your essay was AMAZING
Cyn thank you so much! I just read through the “Costco Essay,” and I can see where our essays may seem similar in some ways. But I agree with you, I would find it very difficult to accuse someone of plagiarizing an essay they have never read 😂. Thank you for your support!!
This is one of the few essays I was able to focus on the entire time. Thank you for sharing!! I'm starting to write mine.

Hiilei Sanchez okay thank you!! I was thinking of using an anecdote when I was asked to fill a bag with objects that represented who I am! Thank you!
