I fist saw the movie at The "Winter Garden" in 63 or 64. I was like 7 or 8 years old when my mother took me to see it. For you that aren't New Yokers, the Winter Garden is a famous theater on Broadway.

This is the overture that is in the score, but not in the vocal score. The show opens with this. And they included it in the movie. Well executed.

The overture in this video uses somewhere in the middle section instead of maria like in the movie version

This is not the overture, but "Quintet", followed by "There's a Place for Us". Perhaps symphonic dances from WSS? Well played and beautiful.

Sorry, you're wrong. When you go see the show, this is the overture that is always played. The "Symphonic Dances" is a 20 minute or so suite. When you watch the movie, this is more or less what was arranged to open the movie. They substitute "Maria" for "There a Place For Us" and changed the ending to make it more "exciting."

@@MrPrincetrumpet Perhaps recent productions have added in an overture, but the original Broadway production didn't have one. The play opened with the Prologue, and the audience was immediately immersed in the story from the start.

@@dmnemaine, let me ask what you mean by "recent", please. The overture has been around since at least 1961.

@@MrPrincetrumpet The Overture you're referring to was written for the film version, and as far as I'm aware, isn't normally used in stage productions. I could be incorrect about that as I'm not as familiar with the more recent stage productions. I was specifically referring to the stage version, not the film. Sorry for the confusion.

Because if they rehearsed with Bernstein they would have all dropped dead one by one like in the Alien movies from exhaustion and stress.
