I was driving one of a friend and i have to say... I never had such an amazing driving experience before and after i drove the mx5.. its just an amazing car and i really want to have one :)
Its a shame that most people spend their entire lives just driving boring underpowered cars from A to B day in day out without ever just going for a joyride for the hell of it in something engineered to be nimble fast and fun. The people who always say "A car is a car" my god.. like GTFO. I love love love exceptional cars!
D43vlogs Agreed! There would be fewer folks going to therapy and taking anti-depressants if more drove Miatas. (Full disclosure: I happen to suffer from mild depression; driving a fun car - even a short run to the store - is very therapeutic!)
I've just got a regular Mazda3 and it's still a blast. I don't think you even need a fast car, as long as you actually love the car and enjoy the drive (not to say I wouldn't rather have an MX-5 like this one)
I finally test drove one yesterday. It will be my next car. The only complaint is the added wind noise with the RF top down... but I think I can easily look past that. All convertibles are really noisy.
Been daily driving a 2018 soft top Club for a month now. Still haven’t driven it so spirited as this, but I’m getting there. I keep coming back to this video.
I've been heavily considering by this car for some time now. As I watching your video and hearing you talk about Michigan (which is where I am from and live) I was noticing the area that you are driving in. The funny thing is...you were driving in the exact area that I live in!! How crazy is that! I could literally name every road you were on. Thanks a lot for the reviews. I'll be sure to get with the guy in Detroit that did your mom's coating.
I drove a 2000 Ford F-150 with the Mazda M5OD? If that's what it's called. Surprisingly easy for a truck transmission, and the shifter was superb! Mazda really knows what they're doing with their transmissions.
Great video man, I love watching the red RF videos! I think especially if you spec the Mazda RF with those dark BBS wheels, the days of the MX-5 being a 'girls car' are long gone. Is there anything that you prefer your BRZ over this particular car?
Maybe due to the rear seats? That is the only thing i am having trouble in deciding. I usually carry 2 people so i think id have to pass on this beauty
I'm sorry for being off-topic, but how much would some houses in the video at 7:30 cost? I'm assuming it's MI? Which part of MI? I'm looking to buy a property in the US and this is exactly what i'm looking for. North-East, nice quiet neighborhood close to an industrial area.
It is a nice Miata, but I agree with what you said in the video. You did put a lot of effort into your Miata. It would be a shame. Also getting the Colorado is not a bad idea.
We have an MX5 from 2000, British racing green and 2 colored interior, 18 years old and as much fun as the first day!! The shifter is like a race car :-) Extremely FUN (affordable) cars. Our other cars are Honda's: unbreakable :-) If you have the place to park more than 1 car, you should have at least one FUN car.Greetings from Belgium.
I've been tempted to get rid of my 2013 BRZ and get a MX-5 RF, too. I've had Honda's, a Mazda, and Subaru's, and they all have their charms (and quirks). I wish I could make a Frankencar by picking parts from different brands (laugh). On a serious note, I do wish *somebody* would bring back tiny pick-up trucks. Mazda would be great at it.
tiny pickup like a hilux or tiny as in toyota bb open deck? because if you are looking at the open deck size, then best look at japanese kei cars. though they don't make them brand new anymore i think...
Sombody You Dont Know Hilux like, I guess. But even those got larger over the years I think. I'm pretty sure Ford Ranger is coming back, but it's too big, just as Tacoma isn't "compact" any more.
the hilux are about the colorado size. or maybe you like the holden commodore ute size. they are much smaller. though im pretty sure there are only a few examples in the US.
I wonder why so many reviewers hype this car I own the 2016 MX-5 ND GT with manual transmission and it has about 8600ish miles on it, but it's starting to have transmission and gear shift problems already. 1) The car has issues with acceleration delay from gear 1 & 2, the torque, HP, none of it feel the same as when you bought it even though you haven't even put on 10k on it. 2) The car will start having rattling noise issues coming from under the hood, I suspect from the heat shield which is made from thin material. Also rattling from inside all the plastic parts from within the cabin, seat, dashboard, etc 3) The gear box is not smooth and sometimes would have hard time shifting, in my case I have issues from 5 to 6. I literally have to give it 1 or 2 sec delay after shifting half way so that it will ease itself in Worst part of it is that the dealer will not acknowledge your concerns, they will just brush you off by saying "This car is bare bone so your complaint is every normal for this car" I took it in twice already but they didn't even bother to open the hood. No diagnostic, no examination, nothing, they just test drive it and determine everything is good. Anyone reading this should definitely look more into Toyota 86 or BRZ instead, they're much more reliable and I'm regretting so much buying this car
As a new resident to Maryland with a long commute to and from work on winding parkways and back roads, I've really been considering an MX-5 but I really am unsure of what to go for, the soft top model or the RF.... thoughts? *note*: I have driven both and am looking to have this as my daily driver
Just ordered the DWS 06's for my RF... havent been able to drive the oem summer potenzas for 2 weeks safely now with the weather like its been on the east coast. Thanks for your reviews on the mx5 and tires.. very helpful. Would love to get your opinion on the wind deflector.. I've removed mine and noticed less buffeting in the cabin with the top off, plus better visibility without it.
can you tell me which trim this is? Here in the UK we have the SE-L Nav, Sport-Nav and the Sport Black. Can't seem to find the trim with Brembo calipers and BBS rims. I've also heard some users refer to a "GT" spec....can't seem to find that as well??
i notice you push it right to the 7K redline, but there's a dotted redline on the dial from 6.5K to 7K. not sure what that means. you can go there but don't stay too long? something like that? i just bought a RF club 4 months ago, but i rarely push even close to 6.5K. it's plenty of fun even without pushing the engine to the max.
My 2014 NC 6 speed shifts like garbage with only 40k miles.. transmission fluid changed to redline.. nothing.. transmission specialist looked at it and only could recommend doing that.. or a rebuild/used trans swap. Shifts terrible up into 2nd and 3rd gear and down into 3rd until maybe 10-15 minutes of driving.. then it shifts pretty decently with no issues really. Clutch pedal only has to be pressed about 30% of the way down and I can shift fine, maybe not set just right? Seems fine.. no leaks or anything from master or slave.. stock car, low mileage, not impressed at all.
Hot Take: I prefer the ND1's performance over the ND2.. I like having the lower torque curve.. I remember both the soft top and RF ND1's I test drove I felt an immediate connection to.. The several times ive driven an ND2, while the top end is definitely stronger, the low end isn't as strong compared to the ND1.. at least for me.. Anyone else share this 'hot take'?
A BRZ Brother! Dude I had no idea you were a Winding Road writer/producer/reviewer...everything? Well done man, keep up the awesome work. I have Winding road to thank for a balaclava I picked up to wear while on my motorcycle, it's been a dream.
I have always wanted a Miata but Mazda refuses to add a couple of inches of headroom for us over 6 feet tall. So I broke down and bought a Toyota 86 that has enough headroom.
The Brz could be your only car, it’s pretty practical and usable. ultimately the ND is more fun, but you’d probably want something to carrh things and people. Depends on your life though!
The civic is butt ugly! What's with the giant triangular black-outs at the corners of the front and rear? BRZ looks just OK, nothing special; they look best up close, but the MX-5 RF is just flat, classic!
A little more fun and lively than the brz, but I’m not sure enough so to sway me away. I love the practicality of the brz, and with a few mods it is 95% of the way there in terms of enjoyment
I have a Mk7 GTI and the MX-5 RF. The GTI is more practical, luxury feeling, softer & quieter with more power (nice turbo boost) - it's almost too refined. The MX-5 is far more fun to drive, looks way better, and gives greater sensation of speed. The Mazda shifter feels like a bolt action rifle with a perfect, notchy feel. I would almost say the GTI can be a little boring while the MX-5 keeps a grin on your face all the time. The only reason I drive the GTI now is in bad weather or I need to haul something.
Chris MJ I’m planning to buy the Golf R next month, use it for two years and then sell it for a CPO RF. Good plan? I’m still debating just going RF but so expensive new.
I think the golf R is over priced from what you get with a GTI. I got my 2015 GTI S new for almost half of what I would need to pay for a new Golf R. I just couldnt justify that the Golf R was worth twice the price of the GTI.
Still can't decide if I want an ND2 Miata or a C6 Corvette. The Miata has the handling and interior refinement but the Corvette has the power and the looks.
And people called this 'girls car's back in the day
Modern Jeep's and Full size SUVs now those are girl cars
this is his mom's car
Louie Lambretta then damn I wish I had a family like that
@@louielambretta389 And its faster than his car (BRZ)
i hate sitting in a car where i feel like im driving in a bus
that's some good rev matching mate
thats what i was gonna say
I love those type of analog gauges way more than the all digital ones.
You’re so calm!! Thats why i like your videos
I was driving one of a friend and i have to say... I never had such an amazing driving experience before and after i drove the mx5.. its just an amazing car and i really want to have one :)

The people who always say "A car is a car" my god.. like GTFO. I love love love exceptional cars!
Most people can't afford to do more than that, sadly.
D43vlogs Agreed! There would be fewer folks going to therapy and taking anti-depressants if more drove Miatas. (Full disclosure: I happen to suffer from mild depression; driving a fun car - even a short run to the store - is very therapeutic!)
Richard I have the same and yes it helps just going for a drive in my NA Miata..all the best bro
I've just got a regular Mazda3 and it's still a blast. I don't think you even need a fast car, as long as you actually love the car and enjoy the drive (not to say I wouldn't rather have an MX-5 like this one)
every time i think about getting a new car, i think about how getting in 20k+ debt is basically chaining myself to my desk at work
BUY THE MIATA!!
I finally test drove one yesterday. It will be my next car. The only complaint is the added wind noise with the RF top down... but I think I can easily look past that. All convertibles are really noisy.
I'm Japanese and I understand English a little bit but I really enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing, dude.
MX5 is benchmark of a sports car.
Been daily driving a 2018 soft top Club for a month now. Still haven’t driven it so spirited as this, but I’m getting there. I keep coming back to this video.
Some of the best shifting ive ever seen
I've been heavily considering by this car for some time now. Miata for sure! Look how much fun you’re having already!
Aww why did you cut out the 180 at 1:41?
cause he doesn't want his mom to know he's burning out her tires
How do you mount your gopro on your head to get that perfect pov of the gauges
I drove a 2000 Ford F-150 with the Mazda M5OD? If that's what it's called. Surprisingly easy for a truck transmission, and the shifter was superb! Mazda really knows what they're doing with their transmissions.
While Continental DWS 06 are all season tires, they do receive high ratings in both ice and snow. I had them on my WRX and they handled well.
Paul Naylor definitely agree that the DWS06 is an awesome all season tires. Have it on my ‘16 civic and handles VERY well.
Hey Chris! You should try to get you’re hands on a Kia stinger gt, and nice vid btw!
That paint and interior trim color is awesome
Get the ZR2 because like you said, a Miata for you would just be a reiteration of the BRZ kinda.
I'm sorry for being off-topic, but how much would some houses in the video at 7:30 cost? I'm assuming it's MI? Which part of MI? I'm looking to buy a property in the US and this is exactly what i'm looking for. North-East, nice quiet neighborhood close to an industrial area.
shit man i want a miata noe
Anton Zuykov Get the Miata, I have one and cannot imagine my life without it.
where do you live?
4:06 love it when you slide :D
Awww. Got a little emotional with the Miata there. Much feels, Miata bro. Redpect
perfect sound with good audio
It is a nice Miata, but I agree with what you said in the video. You did put a lot of effort into your Miata. It would be a shame. Also getting the Colorado is not a bad idea.

catsspat Can i put the s2k ap2 engine in nd miata?
Sombody You Dont Know
Hilux like, I guess.
Love this channel and WRM
man Miata is always the answer !
I'm really debating an ND2 vs GR86. What would you do?
I wonder why so many reviewers hype this car
I own the 2016 MX-5 ND GT with manual transmission and it has about 8600ish miles on it, but it's starting to have transmission and gear shift problems already.

drsnowmon, the 2016 has issues with their manual transmissions. There is a TSB on them. They are replacing them free of charge. Contact your dealer.
It’s so cool that your mum knows which new wheels to put onto her miata
I'm sold
As a new resident to Maryland with a long commute to and from work on winding parkways and back roads, I've really been considering an MX-5 but I really am unsure of what to go for, the soft top model or the RF.... thoughts? *note*: I have driven both and am looking to have this as my daily driver
you have a hard time nailing down the 4-3 downshift. Which is weird, I own a Mazda 3 and the 3-2 downshift is the one I never seem to nail. Nice vid!
Does the seating position seem a bit high? I've only sat in a Miata once and I couldn't get used to how elevated it seemed.
Wow! I like that sound as if almost like a Z4 that i drove once in while or a Porche Boxter.
Really enjoy this video 👍🏼👍🏼
Fun drive video! I like the new Miatas a lot and that’s my favorite color. What watch are you wearing, out of curiosity?
Just ordered the DWS 06's for my RF... havent been able to drive the oem summer potenzas for 2 weeks safely now with the weather like its been on the east coast. This is making me want to sell my golf r...
What year Golf R?
the Miata RF is like 35k haha. get yourself a Z for that price
Z? Too heavy!
C Y K A B L Y A T Miata RF is $25k used in like new condition.
GO HPA package lol
Holy shit those are some wide roads. They just beg to be used as a racetrack.
4:07 3:23 4:35
2/1/21: Can we please have even more Miata content hahaha
Is wind noise on the RF that bad with top down?
If you had to choose your new daily driver car between 2018 brz and 2018 mx5 rf, which would you choose and why
How would you compare this to the WRX?
My 2014 NC 6 speed shifts like garbage with only 40k miles.. transmission fluid changed to redline.. nothing.. transmission specialist looked at it and only could recommend doing that.. or a rebuild/used trans swap.

I’m still torn between the updated BRZ and an ND. Seems like you think the ND is more fun.
Is it also known by the name of MX-5 or it's a complete different model? Can't find it anywhere.
yes
I got the gt Mazda 3 ...its 184 hp...the miata is only 155hp, but wow it's so fast!
Better power to weight ratio, lower seating position, enhanced engine sound, shorter gear ratio and RWD experience
does it have auto rev.matching? or is you who is doing it?
What's the reliability on these?
A BRZ Brother! Dude I had no idea you were a Winding Road writer/producer/reviewer...everything? Well done man, keep up the awesome work. I have Winding road to thank for a balaclava I picked up to wear while on my motorcycle, it's been a dream.
I'd say supplant the NA Miata with the ND, and the Volvo with the Type R. Or, get the Type R and replace the Volvo only and keep the NA Miata
I have always wanted a Miata but Mazda refuses to add a couple of inches of headroom for us over 6 feet tall. So I broke down and bought a Toyota 86 that has enough headroom.
You should try to drive a Jaguar of some sort or an Alfa romeo of some sort
Because thats affordable 😜
If you were car-less and looking, would you pick the BR-Z over the ND?
The Brz could be your only car, it’s pretty practical and usable. ultimately the ND is more fun, but you’d probably want something to carrh things and people. Depends on your life though!
The civic is butt ugly! What's with the giant triangular black-outs at the corners of the front and rear? BRZ looks just OK, nothing special; they look best up close, but the MX-5 RF is just flat, classic!

A little more fun and lively than the brz, but I’m not sure enough so to sway me away. I love the practicality of the brz, and with a few mods it is 95% of the way there in terms of enjoyment
Get the type r review mate
I wish we could have the brembos in EU, nice vid by the way TY
The answer is always Miata. There's a video about that check out out :)
Hey are you that guy from WRM who never stops at stop signs?
Damn I might make the mistake of buying one of these to daily. Prob the worst idea ever but god it would be so much fun
Get the zr2 and this mx5 haha. Also, can you review a zr2??
why turn traction control off tho?
Traction control fucks with your launches
that steering wheel looks so porsche-esque...
Your mom must ready enjoy driving.Does she?
I want both BRZ and this ND
It's a shame I am 6'4"......... The headroom on that joint is mad limited
What engine please? 2.0 165bhp?
Robz1471 155 hp
Why does it make your BRZ feel slow?
Shorter gearing and weight I reckon
Yep - torque, and just good old fashioned power to weight. The Miata has a great torquey, progressive powerband that's really satisfying to use, too.
Thanks for your answer!
What is that warning light in the gauge cluster?
Traction control off :D
sskoul traction off
Fun mode engaged.
Thanks
hard choice between a Type R and a MX5
Mr. Grape! In terms of looks its no contest tbh. MX5 till I die
Mx5 all day
Rather have a Miata than a ugly ass type r, idc if it has almost twice the HP. I'll be happier with a Miata
Q60 RS next pls
it reminds me of a first gen rx7 tbh... except for you know no rotary
Good first car? (used obviously)
Trade your mom the brz for her Miata. Duh.
spooksmagee lol. The issue with the brz and gt86 is that they look like kids cars now 18-23 age. I doubt his mom will accept.
Awesome ! Love all your videos dude, but I got a question, why do u shift so slowly haha
This or GTI?
I have a Mk7 GTI and the MX-5 RF. The GTI is more practical, luxury feeling, softer & quieter with more power (nice turbo boost) - it's almost too refined. The MX-5 is far more fun to drive, looks way better, and gives greater sensation of speed. The Mazda shifter feels like a bolt action rifle with a perfect, notchy feel. I would almost say the GTI can be a little boring while the MX-5 keeps a grin on your face all the time. The only reason I drive the GTI now is in bad weather or I need to haul something.
Chris MJ Thanks for the feedback. Helpful information.
Fiat500 abarth
Get the ND! Or at least make more vids of it :P
Would you get an RF?
I think it'd have to be the exact same spec. Color, RF, Club, brembo kit, everything.
Just get the Type R :D
Im out of Topher pov miata videos 😥
Make car vlogs and You will get many more views.
Still can't decide if I want an ND2 Miata or a C6 Corvette. The Miata has the handling and interior refinement but the Corvette has the power and the looks.
Get the Type R. 1 slow Miata is enough. haha
+Sonic_1000 LOL you clearly havent driven the MX5 in tight backroads 😂
type r or raptor
Where's my gt86/brz guys?!
I remember when the Miata was an affordable car...
Get the zr2
I think transmission perfection goes to honda
