Obsessed with sesame balls! Every week when I go to the Asian grocery store I always buy one because they're always fresh in the morning ^_^ and I love how Sesame balls usually turn out as a perfect sphere! I hope to try this tutorial one day
Finally a tutorial that made it easy to follow. I see several videos on how to make sesame ball, but none is compared to yours. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you so much for your easy to understand instructions and clear demonstration of this recipe. I absolutely love sesame balls and you make it look so easy to do for anyone to have a try. Can't wait to make some and thank you again.
The results were wonderful! The sesame seed outside was perfect, and the filling was almost just like my grandmas! Thank you for this tutorial! I plan on making more very soon because my kids just love them!
Hi lady, coconut flakes and coconut sugar sounds delicious and decadent. I will have to give this a try as I love everything coconut :) Thanks for sharing!
I've been looking for these forever! I had no idea what they were, the name or ingredients or anything, so I'm really glad I found them. I ate them once, we had an asian grocery store in the town where I studied, but they had them only on occasions. I REALLY like the dough. Unfortunately, I guess I'll have to find another similar grocery store in my new town for some of those ingrediences, but if I ever do, I surely will make them :) they look great and not very diet :D (btw, you have a very nice voice)
Hi Kristina, well I hope this is the recipe you've been searching for. Unfortunately, they are deep-fried and it's the only way to achieve that yummy crispy, slightly chewy texture. It'll be worth the splurge! I hope you make these someday and share your results. Thanks for stopping by :)
just made this. it was so goooood. my family loves it. my father in law is a big fan of sesame balls and he approves it. thank you so muchhhhhhhhhhh. so crunchy too =)
Hi Tran,Thank you for sharing your recipes, love every one of your videos. Could you please show me other Banh Vong or Vietnames donut with glazy sugar and sesame seeed ontop.Thank you
Thank you!!! Love your recipes.... Can you put up a video on a similar recipe but instead the filling is meat and is a football like shape. I love it, one my favourites and I can't find the recipe anywhere even in Cook books!!
Oh boy, I am trying to picture this in my mind but all I can conjure up is empanadas..lol...If you have the Viet name for this dish or can send me a pic that would help. Thanks!
I'm using my bfs account lol...but I can't wait to try this! I've been craving these and my daughter luvs these! I luv it how they don't deflate afterwards and more hollow inside and isn't heavy looking. I think I've just found "the one." I always wonder how some ppl make theirs or when I buy them at the store how they still stay so round crispy and not deflated and heavy like. I also luv the fact that I also found how you make mash mung beans on here lol. Can't wait to try the pumkin filling too!
RunAwayRice I finally made it!! Turned out great! Thanks so much for this yummy recipe! :) I also used ur pumkin filling to fill it and it tastes great!
It sounds like there may be air-bubbles in the dough. After rolling, prick the balls with a toothpick and this should help eliminate the air bubbles. Good luck!
Hello, I rlly like ur recipe. I made it today and I wanna freeze it. Do I deep fry then freeze it do I leave it not deep fry. Which option is better? Thank chu
hi dear, i made this recipe yesterday again and its not the same with the last time as i made it. i don know whats going on...the skin starts to expand and almost see the filling (just happened on one edge) when i hv fried for about 7 mins and the skin was golden brown. iw so afraid that the balls will explode through that expansion. Please help, thanks.
Hi Daisie, it sounds like the oil may have been too hot and you had an air pocket in your sesame ball. When making the balls if you get air pockets, just pop them with a toothpick. Use a digital thermometer or electric fryer to get the temperature as needed. The next time this happens, just remove the ball from the oil, pop the bubbles and then refry. Good Luck!
I have tried your recipe for Banh Cam and it came out great and crispy. Thank you. The only issue I have is with the dough sticking to the palm of my hand as I tried to wrap the filling, unlike your video, alas. May I ask you what is the secret to a non-sticking dough?
Hi, I am glad to hear you enjoyed my Banh Cam recipe. The dough should not stick to your hands. If it does, you may want to add just a little more glutinous rice flour. If the dough is still a bit sticky, you can wet your hands with just a little bit of water before rolling. Hope that helps!
I love your sesame ball recipe and I plan to make some for my baby shower this weekend. Can you tell me how much flour and baking powder should be use for a party of 50+ people? And what can I use help keep the balls stay its shape through the day like when you firt fry it? I hope to hear from you soon. Thank you.
PC YV Hi friend, when making for parties, I make the sesame balls half the size. If you'd like to do that, you can get 24 sesame balls instead of 12 per my recipe. If you quadrupled the recipe, this would yield 96 balls so almost 2 sesame balls per person which I think is plenty. So for 4 times the original recipe, you would need 8 cups glutinous rice flour and 5 tsp baking powder. To help the balls hold their shape, after frying let them cool completely before stacking them in a serving tray. Don't stack more than a double layer or they will flatten. Also don't cover the balls completely with foil. If you need to cover for transporting, loosely cover with plastic wrap or paper towels. Sealing them tightly may cause them to wilt. Let me know if you have further questions. Good Luck with your party!
Thanks for making this video, chi! It is simple and your voice is just so cute. I wonder how much mashed potato I'll need if I want to replace the potato starch. Is it 50 gr?
Venus Law Hi Venus, if you cannot find potato flakes, you can boil a potato and then mash it with just a bit of hot water until it's creamy. Good Luck!
This is a great tutorial. Thank you. I don't like any filling in sesame balls so I think I will try making this without filling. Will it still be hollow inside?
Hello! The potato starch is not right for this banh. If you don't have potato flakes, cook a small potato and then mash it up and mix with the dough. Let me know if you have any further questions :)
Sorry....this might be a silly question, but where do you buy potato flakes? Are they the same like the box potato flakes used to make mashed potatoes at the American stores? Thanks!
Hi, I can't find potato flakes here, can I use mashed potato or sweet potato ? You did it so well, keep up the good job so that others will learn more cooking !! Are you a Vietnamese ? As I saw your ingredients were made in Vietnam.
Hi Rebecca, you can use mashed potato or sweet potato in place of the potato flakes. Just add a little bit of hot water to get it creamy. Yes, I am Vietnamese and live the in US. Best of luck with the recipe and please share your results.
elvis agugua Hi Elvis, replacing the potato flakes with sweet potato starch will not give the same result. Instead of the sweet potato starch, cook and mash a sweet potato and use that instead. You'll need about 1/2 cup of mashed sweet potatoes. Good Luck with the recipe and let me know if you have any questions.
Hi Melody, The starchy potato flakes help give the balls better structure and they don't deflate after cooling. Also using all glutinous rice flour can make the balls gummy so I think adding the potato flakes improves the texture.
Hi. After adding glutinous flour, rice flour, baking powder and oil into the mixing bowl, do you use hot water, warm water or room temperature water to knead the dough?
I want to make this without the filling. In that case, do I still have to flatten the dough? I tried once by just rolling the dough to a ball and fried. But the balls didn’t expand properly. Thanks for sharing :)
Greetings, thank you for the recipe. Need your help to advise why the sesame is hard when kept in the chiller to be fried the next day. Looking forward to your reply. Thank you
Hello, I am a bit baffled by the "hard" sesame seeds you described. I often freeze my sesame balls and then fry as needed. I've not had any problems with hard sesame seeds. Are the ones you are using untoasted? Maybe try a different brand? Good Luck!
Hi, thanks for the reply and sorry for the confusion. It is the 'dough' that is hard when keep inside the chiller or freezer for next day frying. Is it got anything got to do with the baking powder or rice flour ? Thank you again.
Ong Rennee I typically let the dough come to room temperature before frying. I don't think the baking powder or rice flour would be a factor. Good Luck !
When rolling the balls, try to avoid making air pockets between the dough and filling. If you see an air bubble, pop it with a toothpick and then smooth out the dough. Also check to make sure the oil isn't too hot as well. Good Luck!
Hi, the balls once they are fried have a diameter of approximately 6 cm. Regarding my deep fry skimmer, I've had it for so long I don't remember where I bought it. It's stainless steel and says made in Taiwan but other than that there's no other markings. I'll see if I can find you more info but you can search for similar products online or in the stores.
Hi Rich, I certainly understand. I am not a huge fan of deep-frying either. Baking is a good alternative. Of course you won't get the nice, puffy dough that comes from deep-frying but again they are healthier. Lay the dough balls on a greased baking sheet, spritz them with just a bit of vegetable oil and then bake at 350 for 10-15 minutes depending on their size. Rotate them so they brown evenly. Good Luck!
My dough didn't turn out like yours and I follow the same exact way like how you show it but mines turn out too dry and I can't even roll it into a ball. Did I do something wrong?
The texture of the dough can vary with the brand of glutinous rice flour you use. If the dough is too dry, add water, 1 Tbsp at a time. The dough should be soft and smooth, not wet and sticky. Please let me know if you have other questions. :)
Don't give it! These balls are worth the effort. If you have time, please visit my blog where I share more tips. Good Luck! runawayrice.com/desserts/sesame-balls-banh-cam/
+bester94 The sesame balls are good in the fridge for up to 1 week. They can be frozen for up to 3 months. To reheat, pop them into the toaster oven at 325 degrees for 5-6 minutes. Enjoy!

I hope the recipe works out for you. I'd love to hear your results. Good Luck!
RunAwayRice I finally made it!! Turned out great! Thanks so much for this yummy recipe! :) I also used ur pumkin filling to fill it and it tastes great!
they look so perfect...can u pls tell me why mine always cracks when i fried them? they literally explode;(((
It sounds like there may be air-bubbles in the dough.
Thank you for the quick response. I will try your tips next time. Who needs Martha Steward when we have our very own Ms Trang :)
If you'd like to do that, you can get 24 sesame balls instead of 12 per my recipe. nice ...
Can I make this a day in advance and freeze it then fry it tomorrow for a party I’m having?
Thanks for making this video, chi! It is simple and your voice is just so cute. I wonder how much mashed potato I'll need if I want to replace the potato starch. Is it 50 gr?
The mashed potatoes is almost 5 oz when prepared so approximately 140 grams. Good Luck with the recipe!
good day, just want to ask if I can use fresh potatoes for this recipe.thank you.God bless😊
Yes, you can boil fresh potatoes and then mash for this recipe.
I could not find Potato flakes in Sydney, Australia..Witch flake or Flour I can replace it?
Venus Law Hi Venus, if you cannot find potato flakes, you can boil a potato and then mash it with just a bit of hot water until it's creamy. Good Luck!
This is a great tutorial. Thank you. I don't like any filling in sesame balls so I think I will try making this without filling. Will it still be hollow inside?
You can make without filling. So the dough cooks evenly you may want to flatten the dough instead of rolling it into a ball. Good Luck!
Dear chi Trang, can I substitute potato flake for potato starch
Hello! The potato starch is not right for this banh. If you don't have potato flakes, cook a small potato and then mash it up and mix with the dough. Let me know if you have any further questions :)
What happens if I used 1 tablespoon and 1/4 teaspoon of baking powder? I misread the measurements. Will they explode or get really big? Thanks!
+Hlee hang Oh, that's a lot of baking powder. They may getting really puffy and explode.
I want to eat
instead for potato flakes can I use potato flour ? If ys how many tsp can I add in pls advice me tq
I haven't tried with potato flour but you can substitute with a potato. Boil the potato and mash it. Good Luck!
Tq so much
is there any way i can substitute the 1 tbsp rice flour? i don't have any rice flour on hand.
pinkcheeks4ever All-purpose flour will work. Good Luck!
Sorry....this might be a silly question, but where do you buy potato flakes? Are they the same like the box potato flakes used to make mashed potatoes at the American stores? Thanks!
Hi Diana, yes, it's instant mashed potatoes and you'll definitely find in the American stores.
Best of luck with the recipe and please share your results.
whats the purpose of the potato flakes is it necessary
The potato flakes give the sesame balls structure and minimize exploding when deep-fried. It is necessary.
K love l of your video! Can u please tell me if I can replace the potatoes flakes with sweet potatoes starch, if so how many teaspoon ??? Thanks
elvis agugua Hi Elvis, replacing the potato flakes with sweet potato starch will not give the same result. Instead of the sweet potato starch, cook and mash a sweet potato and use that instead. You'll need about 1/2 cup of mashed sweet potatoes. Good Luck with the recipe and let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks you! Will try and let u know
Yummy!!
Thanks Tiffaney! Appreciate you watching my videos :)
Why mine pops while I'm frying?
I like the one without fillings inside. Is the recipe the same?
Lol...I love the without the filling too. The recipe is the same. Enjoy!
If you don't mind, what is the purpose of the flakes? I've never seen anyone use them til now. Do the flakes make it taste better? Thanks.
Hi Melody, The starchy potato flakes help give the balls better structure and they don't deflate after cooling. Also using all glutinous rice flour can make the balls gummy so I think adding the potato flakes improves the texture.
After testing to see if the dough is too dry do you add in a tbsp of hot water or cold water? Room temperature water? Thanks!
Hi Janet, for the late response, I typically just use room temperature water.
Hi. After adding glutinous flour, rice flour, baking powder and oil into the mixing bowl, do you use hot water, warm water or room temperature water to knead the dough?
+Marieline Lew I use room temperature water.
RunAwayRice n
nice english and is look cute and yummy
Thanks Kham :)
I want to make this without the filling. In that case, do I still have to flatten the dough? I tried once by just rolling the dough to a ball and fried. But the balls didn’t expand properly.
Thanks for sharing :)
Unfortunately, without the filling there's too much dough and it doesn't puff up.
Sticky rice flour is hard to shape, can u use some all purpose flour instead of potatoes flacks?
Instead of potato flakes, you can boil a small potato and mash it. All-purpose flour is not the right substitute. Good Luck!
Greetings, thank you for the recipe. Need your help to advise why the sesame is hard when kept in the chiller to be fried the next day. Looking forward to your reply. Thank you

How long will they last? Is it possible to freeze and re-heat/defrost?
+bester94 The sesame balls are good in the fridge for up to 1 week. They can be frozen for up to 3 months. To reheat, pop them into the toaster oven at 325 degrees for 5-6 minutes. Enjoy!

Can I use a real potato (boiled) instead of potato flakes? Thanks!
Yes, cook the potato, mash it and when it's cooled, add to the dough. Good luck!
Hi thank you. Do you have banh cong recipe to share?
Hi Jessica, I'll add it to the list for upcoming videos. Thanks for tuning in!
can we make without patato flakes if we dont like it
Sure, the potato flakes gives the dough a bit more structure but you can omit if you don't like it. Good Luck!
Hi can i omit the 1 Tbsp rice flour part? I have only all purpose flour thx
You can use all-purpose flour as a substitute for the rice flour. It helps to tone down the stickiness of the glutinous rice flour. Good Luck!
Another question can we omit the potato flake as well?
Hi, I don't recommend omitting the potato flakes. It's what gives the balls structure and helps them hold their shape after they've cooled.
but i can use mash potato instead right?
onpu june Yes, substitute with the mashed potato. Looking forward to hearing how it turns out for you 😃
my wife is Chinese she is making these as we speak
Yeah! I hope they turned out well!
hi can i substitute potato flakes with potato starch?
+Diana Grace Ecle Hi, potato starch is not the same. Please use potato flakes or boiled and mashed potato. Good Luck!
you can use cooked wheat starch
