  • Possible answer to a viewer's question as to why the rendered video is longer in duration that expected. We'll look at the possibility of unseen objects extending out beyond what the viewer thinks is the end.
We'll also look at the method to render out just a portion of the timeline using the Mark-In and Mark-Out gadgets.

Love your sense of humour. A simple way to avoid the pitfall of a lost clip is to view the entire video on your timeline. It usually throws up unused clips lying to the right beyond the used clips.

Thanks for that! That's a good tip. However, it could miss something that was moved below onto an unused track. I frequently move stuff temporarily to a lower unused track and as you know, with most monitor sizes and resolution settings, one can normally see 4 or maybe 5 tracks at best before your preview window and library window get too small to be useful. If you move something down to track 6 and then use the slider bar on the far right to change the view back up to the top tracks, these lower tracks might contain some unseen object.
One way to clean up all these extra tracks is to right click on the far left of the track areas and select "Remove Empty Tracks". For example, if you have some background music on track 4, by default PowerDirector also creates a video track for track 4 which may be totally empty. By using that command to remove the empty tracks, the video track 4 disappears making it easier to see all the actual tracks in use.

Spot on, I think you have the right explanation. When I first started years ago with PD, I also had this problem once, then I figured it out.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation. I think your guess at what may have occurred that you touched upon at about the 7-minute point of your video is probably what happened here. You have cleared up so much for me and I will know what to look for next time! I deleted my question on your channel because I found a workaround. It wasn't an ideal solution, but it worked. Therefore, I did not leave my question up because I did not want you to spend time looking into it since I found that workaround.
My workaround was to export the video at the duration that the power director pre-set which was too long and would not let me shorten it, no matter what I tried. Then I imported that longer version back into Power Director, and then put the imported product back onto the timeline, and then cut the excess off from the end. It was time-consuming but it worked!
I am so glad though that you noticed my question before I deleted it , saved it, and explained this. I did move some clips further down the timeline in the editing process and probably didn't notice them, which seems like what likely happened! This will save me a lot of time going forward, and I love it when problems that arise have a reason for occurring, rather than just wondering why they happened. I am relatively a newbie to PD, with no formal graphic programming experience so this information is really appreciated! Thanks again for your help! Have a great night!

Thanks for your response. I was wondering what happened to your original comment so I was using what I get sent to me via email by RUclips.
If you read the comments above from another viewer, one was to click on the icon to "View Entire Video" (one of the 2 icons above the track numbers). This will show the entire length of what PowerDirector thinks where your project ends. But be careful, if you have any additional tracks below, it may not show them. That all depends on how much room you have made on your screen by changing the size of the preview and library windows.

Very good explanation I concur 100% - I used to do this all the time in Davinci Resolve !

Glad it was helpful! But I've got to get myself the 5 monitors that you use. Then in PowerDirector I could pop-out the preview window to its own monitor thus making more room to display all the tracks below back on the main monitor. Or I could just get set up where the entire wall consists of 100 or more monitors. Wow, what a picture!

@@Baldy-1 For the record I have downsized to 4 monitors and at the moment cannot think of a reason to bring Ole #5 back.

sometimes I found something so tiny I can only see it if I open the timeline wide to see the individual frames. It's usually something from when i was trimming a clip. Drives me nuts 🤣

You just need to click on show entire video button on the left just above the timeline. This will highlight any stray assets.

    • @Baldy-1

Normally that would be true but as I previously said be very careful about thinking that the "Show Entire Video" button will actually show all objects on the timeline. Try placing a black color board way down below on track 5 or even lower. Typically we all are used to seeing only the top 3 or maybe 4 tracks. When you click on "Show Entire Video", it does not show all tracks of the video. And if you didn't catch that black color board sitting way down on a lower track, your rendered video would have 5 seconds of black screen and you'd be puzzled as to why that is happening. My advice is to click on and select "Remove unused tracks" as this will free up some of that real estate and might make those buried objects suddenly come into view.
