Like a snowball rolling down hill, the amount of data that PowerDirector is required to load upon program startup just keeps getting bigger and bigger.
Here is a video that will let you know what to watch out for so that it doesn't happen to you and just what you need to do in order to get rid of all that junk in the trunk.

Brian - wow - how informative is that - well done - you must have 48 hours in your days - I had been trying to edit videos that were over an hour on the timeline on an older HP Spectre laptop and had been getting unexplained crashes because the system couldnt cope - tried a few things including scaling down the resolution of preview window etc but still happening and rendering was taking for ever. I finally bit the bullet and bought a Lenovo with Intel i9 Gen 9 32GB RAM, 1 TB SSD & NVIDIA 4070 GPU - no more crashes and renders that previously took several hours are now done in minutes - renders would be roughly 50 times as fast - will still follow your lead with the suggestions you made - cheers Rob

I don't think DaVinci supplies the title, transitions, and overlay updates on a monthly update the same as PowerDirector. And I know that they don't partner with Getty, Meta, or Soundscape for thousands of songs, images, and video. The problem with PowerDiretor is that all these downloaded freebies are stored within the program's folders on the C: drive and they do not offer the user a choice for any of the content to be stored elsewhere. Thus the reason for my video, Junk in the Trunk. Packrat users such as myself soon find themselves with hundred of those files that must be read into the program at startup time delaying when the use can actually begin.

Thanks doctor, this was very helpful as there is definitely a bit too much junk over the months/years in PD.

There definitely are too many foreign titles and overlays. Perhaps Cyberlink needs to release these files (monthly updates) based on the language chosen by the OS.

Anything I do in PowerDirector causes the application to freeze irrevocably. It's a joke - this advanced in its development cycle and they can't even get the basics right.

There are thousands of users who run PD every day without problems, myself included. Not to mention all those that utilize PD for editing of family video, slideshows, and as content creators for RUclips and other social media sites. If your program freezes irrevocably, then the problem is on your end. It could be a corrupt installation, or a bad video driver, or corrupt or missing Windows support files.
I would suggest that you try a re-install of the program. I would contact CyberLink support for their guidance. But be advised that they naturally are going to ask for a lot of system generated reports from you in order to determine the cause. In most cases, an outdated or corrupted video driver is the typical cause.
What I'm saying is that don't just say that they can't get the basics right when your CPU and graphics display are being stressed by video editing. That's what video editing does and everything must be running perfectly on your own system.
Come back and let us know what the resolution of the problem was.

Thanks Brian for your many great videos!
Since you are an expert, maybe you can help me. I have a PowerDirector installation on my PC and a license for a laptop. Is it possible to get the favorites created on the PC (titles, transitions, simply all favorites) on the laptop.
Thanks for your help and kind regards from Austria (sorry for my bad English) cheers Erich

Your English is perfect. And that is a very good question. Unfortunately I don't know of any easy way to duplicate the favorites list from one computer to the next. I believe the notation that marks one template as a favorite is simply a text notation contained in the .JSON file that PowerDirector reads as it load in the list of templates that are available. And it probably would be a dangerous thing to do if one were to simply copy these .JSON files between the two computers. Who knows what differences there might be between the two computer systems and that would only confuse PowerDirector.
Your best choice is to just take the time to add whatever templates you like to the Favorites list on the second computer.
And Hello to everyone in Austria.
