  • My first musical experience with Ginuwine’s music was his second album in 99 and the single anxious. As a kid I didn’t quite understand the subject matter of the song, but immediately you could hear his music was was like no other and his ability to entertain on screen was of superstar quality. In diving into his background in music I learned Ginuwine was a bright upcoming rnb star on his second go round with success, going platinum first with his debut album that sold over 2 million copies behind the hit song “Pony”, an rnb classic that also enjoyed platinum success and was the #1 song in rnb in 1996. His second album released 3 years later but made it clear fans were waiting for the drop in that album becoming his best selling and highest peaking at the time. Another platinum album filled in 2001, solidifying Ginuwine wasn’t just a 1 or 2 trick Pony so to speak. He seemed here to stay, especially when he dropped his single “Differences”, my favorite Ginuwine song, and his second #1 rnb hit that peak at 4 on the billboard charts. His highest billboard peaking song and second career top 10. R&B superstar was written all over Ginuwine, but instead his music hit a decline throughout the 2000s and by the end of the decade he released his final top 10 album and was gone from the game. I agree. But also, I think his age played a big part in his stunted growth. He was in his 30s when the 2000s occurred. After you turn 30; your smooth, masculine, suave artist appeal turns to become a conducive market for adult contemporary music for older mature adults for those who are over 40. In the 2000s RUclips, ringtones, and free music downloads changed the music industry drastically and Urban mainstream music became more juvenile and ratchet which it still is today. Social media has become a curse but a blessing for many older artists from back in the day. They simply can generate income just to go on tours and perform repetitious songs that people love yearly.

My introduction to him was his first album. I think he helped make it cool to be smooth and debonair at a time many R&B artists still was trying to be rough and play a little on the street side (likely to the heavy influence of Hip Hop and Hip Hop being the support to help R&B artist get crossover and vice versa). I think G honestly bought into his own hype and got in his own way. He lacked being grounded and it cost him. If you look at stories from other artists such as Tank you can start to see Ginuwine had what it takes to be next level but did not have to vision/discipline to understand growth as an artist and here we find him on StuntedGrowth! Great video.

Both genres started morphing together making this weird gangsta singing gangbanger pimp sound that's turning both genres into some corny sub culture. But every music genre has gone through this cycle where they get watered down to almost destruction then the people finally get enough and it resurrects.

Think about it. That man can hold his head high. Name any other artist today that are going to have classic albums like this years down the line. A lot of them are going to be considering stale and aged bad. You can still go play those Ginuwine records and they sound incredible

Usher, R kelly, etc didnt interfere with the success of Ginuwine's first two albums, because Timbaland gave Ginuwine a unique sound that put him in a lane by himself. Although Ginuwine's 3rd album only had 1 Timbaland song. I think it was his best. Because it proved that he can make a commercially and critically successful album without depending on the sound of Timbaland. Plus it was more R&B than his first two. BUT, his 4th album was generic af. Thats WTF messed up his career. After that, it was over. You should do a stunted growth of DeVante Swing. He went from competing against R Kelly and Babyface as a self-contained writer/producer/musician to allowing his own protege (Timbaland) to become 1000 times successful and popular than him.

Devante swing is definitely a great suggestion...also the robbery that happened to him around 1993 played a huge role in his downfall...wasnt really the same ever since
