Amerie "Marrying My Manager Did Not Kill My Career' What Happened? Stunted Growth Music

  • In 2005 Amerie had one of the biggest songs in music with her hit single off her sophomore album 1 thing, that landed #1 on the hip hop and R&B charts and sold a million copies in the U.S alone. At the time, Amerie was a fresh face, with a new sound in R&B, that felt fun and expressed love between two people as a walk through the city where everything goes just right. Perfect sunshine on a summer morning, no lines at the food cart, ice cream and fire Hydrants, short shorts and heals that don’t hurt your feet as you make your way to the person of your dreams and spend the rest of the day smiling. It felt good, energetic, safe and different. In fact some female artist coming out around that time or soon after, were believed to have taken from Amerie’s sound and began to do the same things, only difference those artist were the other half of the spectrum. The side that came into the game not to turn down the opportunities to be made into the star being a top musician can give you. Since her 2002 debut release, Amerie would only release 3 more albums in the next 20 years, even though she had one of the most amazing soprano voices in urban music. Her sound was great. She could also dance, act and let’s not act like this intro will end without mentioning that she was naturally beautiful and easy to sell the idea of falling in love. From timing to looks and everything in between, Amerie could’ve been the biggest thing in RNB in the 2000s and remembered today for just that. Instead she’s had a relatively short run, and never made it to the top in the genre like expected. What happened? Stunted Growth Music.

This is going to be a super hot take……
As big of an Amerie fan I am, I do believe Beyoncé took her (Amerie) sound for her “B’Day” album and ran with it after “1 Thing”.
Just take a listen to Amerie’s “Touch” album and listen to Bey’s “B’Day” album.

Hell if you really want to dive into it, her 3rd album “Because I Love It” was being recorded in 2005 but was never released until 2008 in the US. During this time Beyoncé’s B-Day was released (2006) and this is when rich Harrison was producing for her. If you take a listen at “Because I Love It”, the whole damn sound of the album was the blueprint for B-Day. In my opinion, “Because I Love It” is my favorite body of work by Amerie. She was definitely done dirty by Columbia Records and there’s no doubt about it.

I’m so glad you did this episode. Amerie was slept on. Her voice was alright but the beauty of Amerie was in her songwriting and authenticity. Her songwriting skills are nearly on par with Mariah. The combo between that and Rich’s production was immaculate. Her debut album is a classic. “Why Don’t We Fall In Love” is a short but beautiful urban masterpiece.
I don’t like her most recent singles but she seems to be doing well as a reading vlogger (or, something). She’s super talented and I wish her nothing but the absolute best. She’s so dope!

Yes Beyonce took the girl's whole style when she went solo. When Beyonce was walking in the beginning of Crazy in Love I couldn't pinpoint why it felt so familiar. The Why Dont We Fall In Love video. Amerie did it better and has better legs. It's very similar to Aaron Hall and R Kelly. The person with more of an It factor takes the style and the other person goes to the background.

In this video, the point that was made that she evolved and moved on, I would have to agree with. She got married and had a child. The problem is, the music business is a seriously dirty place, and she has alot of integrity. She is NOT selling her soul. Hey I hope it doesn’t get taken out of contacts, but I wish you would’ve spoke on more of how Rich Harrison which is a great producer went on to work with Beyoncé and dad kind of overshadowed and my opinion that whole sound and run of that era. It was almost like we have Beyoncé and I like the industry does & kind of pits Artis against each other. Now I love AMarie I’m a big fan I wouldn’t have even known about her third album if it wasn’t for this video I thought love and war was our third album which goes to show how poorly the label promoted her third album nonetheless I just wish you would’ve spoke on that aspect but great video and I still love her music I stream it all the time

You left how her producer gave Beyonce her style for Crazy in love that was the main reason she's not as big as she should be

i remember saying that and everyone called me "crazy" back in 2005 , now you see tons of youtube videos on how beyonce stole other aritist's style (a few put amerie's "this is' song in the video)

she seems like a total sweetheart..
it definitely would have been nicer to see get growth and where she would be now... it could simply be that she had her time in the sun and just like the sun does it set on her .
hopefully she is doing well and is happy and healthy

Amerie dropped her first album in 2002, Beyonce dropped hers a year later 2003 I was aware of Destiny Child but wasn't really familiar to the individual singers until Beyonce album dropped so thats why I said solo artist because Bey wasn't a solo artist at the time.

Ive been a fan of Amerie since i was a teenager. Im 34 now. I loved her natural beauty and voice and the way she just seemed down to earth and cool as a person. Definitely the kind of women i wanted as a wife. The culture has really changed and i wish we had more artist like her today, but all we have now is all these stripper-turned-rapper chicks who look and sound ridiculous, for the most part. We really should have shown more support for women like Amerie. Music could be in a better state today, had we appreciated and supported real women and artist who actually had messages, along with feel good music and natural beauty. I really miss her making music.

I don’t think the label promoted her how they should have from the 1st album on… only 2 singles an album. I think her old manager may have been better for her also.
She’s so underrated, she can sing live, dance, act etc. Also, so down to earth.
