- It seems the HD version will contain this guy and the Dark Aeons. I know you are all really excited about this. But don't take these guys lightly.
I uploaded a Penance movie in 5 parts years ago. Now I bring you a full uncut battle. Enjoy.

People are accusing DK of cheating? Seriously, if it's because of his stats, we don't need to be Sherlock-level of deductive work to figure out he's not using a Gameshark, or modding. Plus let alone his time being 903:25. It'd take 2x the effort to fib stats like that, just to "prove" he isn't cheating. Don't hate if you can't beat Jecht, let alone any of the side bosses/Dark Aeons. Come on guys. XD

If Rikku didn't have her Mix overdrive, then it wouldn't have been the same honestly
Whilst Penance has an immense amount of HP, and a lot of damage, it's more of a low risk - high patience situation. Ozma, on the other hand, is based on luck of him not deciding to cast Curse like 7 times in a row. I managed to defeat Ozma without Auto-life, and with no possibility of autoattacking him (refused to do the 7 spirits quest the second time around to try to beat him that way, much harder, I have to admit...). Though anyone who says that Darkkefka is cheating has obviously not played FF enough to recognize how much grinding is needed to get those stats and everything he uses. Also, this is a LOT of patience going on here, and even a slight misplay could lead to a Game Over screen, if you're watching the guy's video that he took time to put together for your viewing pleasure, you should respect that instead of accusing him of cheating...

Anyone who has played ffx postgame, especially before the remaster nerfs, will know this is not cheating at all. It's crazy how OP you're allowed to get.
This isn't even close to cheating. It's a very legit and effective strategy. Relying entirely on Zanmato, on the other hand, that's cheating, and even then, there's a lot of randomness and inconsistency involved, so it's not totally risk-free.

here's the thing...the lower your HP..the faster your overdrive charges in Comrade mode...the faster it charges..the more I can use Overdrives...which keeps the arms at bay. 2 attacks from the arms are Terragraviton and Calmity. Once you get hit by these, your HP doesn't mean a THING. So like I said, please people for the last time... STOP TELLING ME TO USE 99,999!! I DON'T NEED IT!!

That's not what I meant-I meant that it makes sense to make FFX HD my "main" since my original "main" was the NA edition. And that means hundreds of hours into that version QQ

Freelancer) dude my complete runthrough just a couple months ago i had 146 hours and was on my way to remove every node and replace all of them , even the HP and MP!! got about a 5th of the way after 30 or 40 hours so i said fuck it and beat the game LOL Ive never played the HD version but i can promise you, You dont need max stats to beat him, or at least i wont nor will i ever think i need to waste my gaming time and max out the sphere grid
Sendy Lie You only need 170 agility and 140 luck in this game...anything above is just a show-off. I clocked 160 hours for max 255 stats luck included, that's with taking my time to enjoy the HD remaster.
Luck, accuracy, magic ... are not maxed here. I can max all chars in less than 200 hrs only

+Rafael Mantas I'm not sure either, 900hrs is a bit excessive. But maybe he left it on during the day or something. I had a friend who use to do that back in the Memory Card days.

@@Kristalya No you can mess that up and still do fine for the fight. When I did it I rarely used attack reels unless I had a few turns before the arms respawned because if you use it with 2-3 targets (penance plus the arms) then the damage gets thrown randomly between the 2-3 making it hard to keep track of the arm's hp and its most efficient use as a special is when it can repeatedly hit the same target since then it deals over the 99,999 damage cap that one quick hit would give.
The major mistake that ends everything is if you let penance get a turn in when it has both arms up since it does an instant party wipe move that negates auto-life. The trick in the fight (besides having the right armor, celestials, and stats) is to kill the arms a few turns apart so that they don't respawn at the same time which gives you a small window where both are dead and you can wail on the boss directly. To do this the arms take 6 hits total (if you do 99,999 damage per hit) so you usually hit them 5 times then right before their turn to act in the combat order you finish them off. If you keep doing this repeatedly and get damage in vs the boss you will win. Another learning pain is during phase 2 the boss uses immolation which causes armor break. If you don't use dispel to remove it your character will die if they are targeted again, and in the fight having a character die throws everything off since you would then have to waste time using Rikku's overdrive to give that resurrected character the equivalent cheer x5 mix to make them not instant die to attacks. I definitely wiped once from forgetting to dispel a character and having them die. Since you have to output constant damage a character dying means that by the time you get them rebuffed they have also lost their damage outputting turns making it possible to fail the fight.
When I beat penance I had Tidus, Wakka and Rikku. Honestly, a tactic I like to use is to hit the first arm 5 times then use the character just before its turn to finish it off. Gives me the maximum time I can get before it regenerates.
To be honest Penance isn't really hard so much as time consuming, especially given all the preparation. Once you have the right gear it just becomes a battle of attrition.

fought penance for 3 and a half hours once,still did not kill him hardest ff boss ever worst than ruby or emerald weapon good job loving your work.
can be hard, I just customised everyones shields so that they all had defence +20%, auto protect, auto shell and auto haste and worked brilliantly, my chars stats were all maxed out well all except luck whic was 175 for all chars.
i swear if another person tells me to use zanmato........

True ff fashion held since the early Nintendo/snes days before youtube and clips. You could prove to your friends back in the day you did it by literally showing them a certificate, like the "Proof of Omega" key item from ff8 or the like.

Even with max stats this boss is challenging. Wow.
If you do it right with maxed stats, then the battle will only take 27 minutes.
Problem I have with this game as a whole, is just you get to a point where you don't bother putting effort in, Max damage quick hit spam, over drive, rinse and repeat, theres no strategy, its not even difficult, just takes an age, Length does not mean difficulty well thats my 2 cents
***** I understand making your own difficulty, I tend to poke around with what i can and can't do on games even when it is either not intended or it is. But no sphere grid sounds like aids, as in. Sounds less fun than quick hit spam. And its poor game design if in order for me to feel challenged, I have to say FUCK YOU GAME AND ALL THAT YOU STAND FOR !
I think the same. It was a longe fight but always in Control. Ruby weapon in FF VII is more challenging. Of course there are extreme cheesy ways to Win. But u cant Just say "yo, mofo. Im Maxed you so bring It on" u Just gonna né slaughtered

Spoilers, but yeah, Yevon needs Sin to be alive to put pressure on Spira with the teachings and their established religion. They are corrupt and make Spira believe in false hope that Sin can be stopped someday - which he can, but Yevon would never.

I don't know how one finds the time to grind for this big baddie, but boy is he a powerhouse to beat.
Years later I look upon this game and think how I ever had to patience to beat Penance in the new version. :)

No...you Zanmato Penance first, get the trophy, don't save, and actually do it.
Using Twin Stars and Three Stars allow you to use magic freely. Twin Stars work on one character, Three Stars for the whole party. Some of Rikku's mixes will do it as well. It's done at around 12:05 here.

Tidus’ sun sigil, the catcher chocobo race. A minimum of 4-8 hours simply for the lucky ones...
Grinding his ass off
You can use the overdrive converted to AP build + tonberry one shot trick to max out all characters on the sphere grid in a day - unless you are trying to max all stats, then the luck grind is way worse/takes an extra day or two. Anyone who put over 900 hours into the game I'd hope would know about that/knows not to level grind for max stats.

So how did you get X-Potion? I know when you have the auto-potion ability, it will automatically consume one potion, so how can one upgrade from Potion to X-Potion?
You can bribe xpotions from a monster in cavern of the stolen fayth. I dunno the name of the monster but it looks like a small behemoth.
By not having any potions other than xpotion in your inventory.
X POTION can easily be bribed from Valaha (from Cavern, or better yet at Monster Arena), 60 PCs for around 100k gil
Thow away all potions and hi potions. So that Auto Potion ability automatically use X Potions.
Or you can mix Rikkus Trio of 9999, even ordinary potion will heal 9999

If you really cant win with the original besaid aurochs wait till you get the airship and hire brother (the one piloting the airship) to be on your team. Hire ropp as well to make things a lot easier. He is located at the inn in miheen highroad where you fight the chocobo eater.
Get to understand the stats of each player, stats are everything on Blitzball, and recruit better ones, cause for newcomers, Auroch Spirits suck (Original Wakka's team)
Honestly you should check Gamefaq guides about blitzball and players stats, as stated 5 months ago, brother (He's on the bridge, mid, fow) is amazing early game, so as Ropp (Milhen Road, def); just read the guide cause there's a lot of good ones, including an independent team

For those wondering, there are eleven bosses not available in the American version, only in the international version. These are the Dark Aeons, (Valefor, Ifrit, Ixion, Shiva, Bahamut, Anima, Yojimbo, and Cindy, Sandy and Mindy are all separate) and this boss, Penance.
How do you get a English version of the international game? I only have the Japanese version on emulator, plus the HD version looks meh to me.

Actually it's 52mil and change ^_^ but still both fights are hella hard. Between the 2 Yiazmat MIGHT be tougher, just because of his fast combos near the end and the 52 mil health. 1 1/2 hour fights are not uncommon. Would be interesting to know what the record is for quickest Yiazmat fight
***** In Lightning Returns, Chaos Aeronite on Hard Mode has 57,750,000 HP. Highest in the series. Now, THAT is a tough-ass fight. You also only have about 15 minutes at max to beat him.

I only had three Celestial Weapons fully upgraded, and those were the Caladbolg, the Nirvana, and the Masamune. I did get the Onion Knight, Godhand, and Spirit Lance, but was too lazy to upgrade those. And the World Champion...ugh.
I'm so glad they used the ultra-epic music for this fight. It makes the conflict worth it when you're clashing to such epic music.

It's because of your great videos I managed to actually figure some of it out, you probably won't see this as much but you've given me a lot of faith and really helped me achieve what I did in FFX. So thanks =)
I want to clear a few things up
1. Penanace is availible across all versions of the game defeat all dark aeons go to the air ship and he is listed in the destination directory.
2.wakka is the most damaging character in the game attack reels deals 70-100k of total damage.
3. The no mp quick hit is not a cheat its an amour upgrade
I agree with you. Wakka hits the hardest. Penance and the dark aeons are super-bosses and optional. I think if you were going to cheat, then using zanmato is a cheat. What's the point in fighting a super-boss if youre just going to use that attack? Its not really an achievement or a testament to all the hard work you've put in.

3. Incorrect. Nothing on his armor gave "zero MP cost". The free quick hits were good for only 3 characters when Tidus used "Three stars".
You sir are a legend i always watched your penance video's when i got the game on the ps2. I couldnt beat the dark aeons on ps2 now ive beaten them all and im ready to fight penance myself on ps4. Anyway great job

If you want to hit pretty accurately in this game, you will need Luck (Raises evasion, critical hit chance and accuracy) status. You can get the luck sphere from Greater Sphere, but you do need patience because this boss animation is SLOW when you start the fight and when it dies. Also you can get fortune sphere from Earth Eater.
Its not cheating. DK knows the game inside and out. And he knows the limits of his characters. So quit accusing him of cheating. He earned his victory fair and square against one of the toughest superbosses in the entirety of gaming. And Mr. DarkKefka you are a god at Final Fantasy X. I have learned a lot from your videos and applied them to my game. Keep up the awesome work that you do.

Watching Tidus, Yuna, Auron, Rikku, Kimahri, Lulu, and Wakka beat the everliving shit out of Penance is one of the most satisfying things to watch. Great job, Darkkefka!
it means that there is no exploration, most games are linear because they have a story that requires them to go from point a to point be, it's just that having the world map makes you more familiar with the world as a whole
Also take note Penance was the FIRST Final Aeon, or so rumor says. It was Lord Zeon and Yunalesca's Final Aeon.
I don't think Penance was a Final Aeon. Whenever Sin is defeated, Yu Yevon jumps from the defeated shell and takes control of the Final Aeon, turning it into the new Sin.
Axel Slashtimus Braska's final aeon (Jehct) was still a separate fight. I don't know if the above rumour is true, but it is plausible if you can fight Jehct.
True, but when Sin is fought and destroyed, that's pretty much the death of the Final Aeon that was used as Yu Yevon's vessel. Also, Zaon's fayth statue had lost its power, mentioned by the unsent man in Zanarkand. With no power, the aeon would be rendered useless.
Axel Slashtimus You fight Penance before you fight Sin, as when you fight Sin the game ends. However, good point about the fayth losing its power, I forgot about that.
No. It's revealed in chapter 5 of FFX-2, at the 101st floor of Via Infinito, that Lord Zaon turned into an aeon / fiend named Paragon. You see Yunalesca and Zaon for the first time at floor 80, where Yunalesca turns into Chac. Upon her defeat, Zaon holds her in his arms until she dies and then walks deeper into the labyrinth (to floor 101). At floor 101, Zaon puts up his arms (just like Jehct did before transforming into Braska's Final Aeon) and transforms into Paragon
Ha, I like how you got "their women" sorta speak, to heal them, ie: Yuna for Tidus, Lulu for wakka and so on. Great fight
He actually did use Blitz Ace once, and already noted that that was a mistake as he intended to use Energy Rain here. The reason is also clear to me. Dealing damage alone is not the deal here, keeping the Arms out seems to outrank the damage itself, so hitting multiple targets all the time was the key element of this strategy, which appears to be working.
Jesus, how do you have the time for this? It's insane. Even the time I put in to grind and beat Jecht (I know, probably small fry but I haven't played the game in fourteen goddamn years) tired me out.

Some people just do this though. They play one game and do absolutely everything to do in the game to max and then some. My argument us you could play so many games in the time it took to max stat and do everything in FFX. But hey, that is just my mindset. I don't criticize those who do spend time like this on a game if they really enjoy it. I spent 70 hrs on Yakuza 3 once because I just had that much fun playing it.
No the dispel was to get rid of the status effects penance caused, the reason he can still use quick hit is because he has No MP Cost on his weapon/armor.
They're only in the international edition of the game and the PAL versions. They will be in the HD remakes that will be coming out later this year.
Imagine if Penance had Ruby Weapon's Whirlsand attack..... That would be an absolute nightmare....

Because after Penance uses Immolation, it causes Armor and Metal Break which you need to dispel before Penance attacks again.
I'm not a troll. That's what was on my mind, and I was referring to the technical/graphical aspects of both games. FFX's magic animations are all HD versions of FFVIII's. The importance of summons and their central role in the story are also another similarity. The more human-like character models, the monster models, the varied musical score...
Don't carry any normal potions or hi-potions. So when you are using auto-potion, it forces it to use X-potions.
I am happy to see you will play the HD version Dark, this has been always my favourite Final Fantasy (an even videogame) ever since I played it (Its been 10 years, more actually but gotta love that qutoe xDDD).

it was announced very recently that the HD version is on its way to the ps3 and vita, and will include the international and PAL version additional content (The dark aeons and this boss).

Penance HP is 12 million, each of its arms has an HP of 500K, which regenerates every 12 turns
Penance isn't a fiend, not an aeon or anything related to aeons. It's an ancient machina used by bevelle in the war with zanarkand, bevelle released it once again on its final attempt to stop Yuna and her guardians

DiMaggio voiced Gilgamesh in XII. For whatever reason, they didn't retain him for Duodecim. That Gilgamesh is voiced by Keith Szarabajka, who voices Harbinger in Mass Effect 2 (and a slew of other video game characters).
Fun fact: Szarabajka has a minor role in The Dark Knight, as well. He's the cop that the Joker taunts in order to break out of jail.

@BoydTheMilkmanX the point he is making is that if you health remains at 9999 you can easily refill it with x potion thus keeping your health out of the yellw a lot easier for example to fil it to the max potential health would take ten potions. and if you keep your health low you can use the spqfe on your sphere grid for stats like luck
Also, I hate grinding and I feel like there is a lot of boring grinding in all kinds of games, 8 is up there with some of the worst cases of it but I still do it because I'm kinda hardcore like that. It's the story, themes, cutscenes and music that I love and I think it's kind of funny that gameplay is the most important aspect of a Final Fantasy game to you.
I watch until the bit where you used Blitz Ace instead of Energy Rain and then skipped to the end.

We're getting this in the Final Fantasy X HD collection, along with X-2 International. It may not include Final Mission though, SE is still on the fence adding.

To interject, Terra does in fact have character development. At the start, she has amnesia, and has no idea what she is. Through the plot devices of other characters speaking and going through their own development cycles, she starts to question her own existence, which activates her esper form. Its also shown that in the second act, she has learned to love, etc etc. I wouldn't start pointing out the lack of development when you yourself show your own inabilities to identify such things.
Lol, just did this battle with basically no special preperation. Took me about an hour and 20 minutes. :/ Auto-potion and auto-protect would have made it so much quicker.

You must have been playing the normal version of the game. Penance is an exclusive to the International version along with the Dark Aeons. You actually have to defeat ALL Dark Aeons for this boss to become available.
No one knows. It was supposed to come out the same day as KH HD but that is no longer the case and since then the release date has been unclear.
10 years ago, I thought I was a god when I played this and beat it 100% through but then months before the HD remastered was set to release... I realized I ain't shit compared to the international version lol wish I got the international version when I was young to test this but hey at least I'm getting there again through my PSVita.
