    I used to work at a mascot shop, so I have some experience with fur. Two things I would have suggested for this build. First, for the complex flames on the flanks, I would have hand sewn the orange fur to the outside of the dark fur (curved needles are great for this), and then cut away the dark fur from underneath (to let the LEDs shine through). Similarly, when I saw that the circles of orange fur on the hips were completely surrounded by armor circles, it occurred to me that you could have made that whole bit as a separate piece (armor, orange fur, LEDs) and then attached it to the outside of the hip (possibly but not necessarily cutting away the dark fur underneath first). That being said, you did an amazing job considering the skills you were using for the first time.

      Do mascot shops ever commission full fursuits, or is that a different sort of thing? It seems like the tech would make sense considering how elaborate some of them get.

    • @krikorajemian8524
      @krikorajemian8524 9 месяцев назад +6

      @@Hawk7886 A mascot shop could totally make a furry cosplay outfit, if the customer was willing to pay the cost. But they are expensive; most customers are corporations that can afford it. My understanding is that for most furry cosplayers, making one's own costume is a big part of the fun.

      Hi!! I looked it up, and the average for a mascot costume is 6-10k. However, the cost for just a firstly head and paws ranges from 1-5k, and the full body suits range from 4-15k, up to 50k, which is the highest price a fursuit has been sold at, though I SWEAR there was a 200k one. Fursuits are luxury items, and most people make their own because of cost. :)

    Some tips I learned that might help anyone struggling with stuff like this and similars:
    -Use arrows on the pattern cutouts to show where the fur direction is. This is specially useful with complex patterns that require small pieces since that way you will have the exact same direction for all pieces, no matter how small (Like stripes or spots)
    -A big of hot glue can go a long way when trying to get a fur piece in place when it's a bit too tricky. Specially for moving parts like the legs, a couple touches of hot glue near the joints and several pieces instead of a single long one means you will have a much easier time.
    EDIT ADDON: I forgot to add, but doing a small trim around patterns with some scissors will make the patterns stand out more instead of blending. Just shorten the fur at the edges after you've put it in place. This specially works for more artificial/cartoony designs. Realism tends to lean more towards blending, although there's also times where in realism you can find patterns that need this trick
    *-ALWAYS. ALWAYS USE A VENTILATOR WHEN CUTTING FAUX FUR. Fur lung is no joke.* You also will likely end up with hair splinters after a while. They are horrid to deal with, bot not as dangerous as fur lung.
    -Adding onto this, even with a ventilator on for anything with fumes/small particles, still try to do it in a well ventilated room or prefferably outside if that's a choice.
    -Aerosprays are godsend for patterns on fur. Seriously, if you work with fur a lot it's worth it.
    -Wiring can be really fun for smooth movements of joints. For example look at those long-finger extensions, which use wires/cords at the base of the hand to make the joint bend in a more rigid and realistic way.
    -Test strips for dyes can be really helpful if you have not worked with a dye before. This can also be applied to dying your own hair (also helps with telling if you have any reactions!!)
    -Cardboard, while very useful, has to be checked often to make sure there's no molding. Specially in pieces where there's a lot of contact with sweat, mold is a constant threat. This also applies to foam like the one used on fursuits. Check your stuff from time to time! Your health is important!!
    This is probably one of my favorite cosplays ever and VERY inspiring. I will probably be using this as a reference after I move over to australia and hopefully set up a small workshop.

    RIT makes a dye specifically for synthetics, it's called Dyemore and would probably work a lot better for faux fur! The one you seemed to use here is only really meant for natural fabrics, like cotton or linen.

    • @roguedoodle9948
      @roguedoodle9948 9 месяцев назад +3

      Agreed, the usual ones you find are for natural fibers and well. Faux fur is polyester. Dyemore is also a little tricky with it, works best with nylon based synthetics. Though on the expensive end of things, sometimes spray-painting the fur with air spray works for more precise coloring.

    • @lightdreamer_
      @lightdreamer_ 8 месяцев назад +1

      Also, should have looked through Howl Fabric fur colors too, because they're quite different and could have found the right one easily

  • @dorkbaitart
    @dorkbaitart 10 месяцев назад +17

    RIT dye suuuux for trying to dye synthetics and particularly when you have a specific color you're trying to achieve. I think doing the gradient for the leg pieces would have been much easier by heavily diluting acrylic paint with fabric medium! and if you don't already have a high quality rotary fabric cutter and fabric-only shears trust me these things will save your life esp when it comes to cutting stuff like frigging faux fur (bane of my existence) or velvet...or any stretch fabric really. the best part about fabric shears/rotary cutters is you can also get them sharpened when they start to get dull and they are good as new!!! huge kudos for taking on such a massive project with so many unknown skills involved!! it turned out amazing and i love the LED elements even though they were a huge pain in the ass.

    Amazing work, this is the coolest cosplay I've seen made this year!!!, As someone who works with fur fabrics, I can recommend buying a different type of sewing machine presser foot that can get through thicker fabrics like fur, leather, ect. Definitely saves a lot of time and having to sew by hand! (If you ever decide to work with fur again that is) 😁

    For doing the bevels, there are little tools you can get that you can attach to your X-ACTO knife that allow you to set the exact angel you want to cut at! It's called the BevAll, they also have them for box cutters, it's honestly a godsend. It's made with people who have a hard time holding these kinds of knives and those with shakey hands in mind
    There's also an alternative to mod podge that doesn't leave streaks by Scorch Marker called Magic Modge, it's great

    Instead of hot gluing your nut to prevent coming off, use a nyloc nut. They can be removed by using a pair of adjustable pliers and a appropriate sized box wrench. For many thicknesses of fabric, drop the dog feeds on your sewing machine….a quilting presser foot might help to. Amazing build!

    A hint for more sturdy solders. After finishing up with the solder, cover the solderpoints with hotglue. it can waterproof them as well.
    You might also want to consider guides for the cables so they do have a clean path to pass through.

    I don't know a ton about cosplay and I'm completely fascinated by this build, but I will lend some advice based on something I'm a bit familiar with. If, in the future, you need to have wiring that's not so stiff, you can get silicone jacketed wire. I've used it a lot for RC car builds. It's really flexible and the conductivity is great, too. Plus, there are a lot of useful quick connectors designed for rc cars that might work well for parts that you want to be removable.
