    So great to hear Bill K. playing as the only drummer again.

    Holy fuck what a dark star. Barry Sless sounded just like Jerry circa 72-74 and Kimock was Kimock. Amazing.

      I never made any shows after 1988 when I was with Jerry but Philly as I called him was a real good friend ! I think I mite of been 1 of the few that met his wife ? She’s so nice plus how could anyone not have the best respect for a guy like him ! ❤️🌹☮️💥❤️‍🔥☄️🥰🪐👽👻😱😘

    Barry Sless is an incredibly underrated guitarist. I have tried to find more of his music to little avail. He has that nice ability to channel Jerry while also maintaining some individuality and personal swagger. In my mind he nicely combines Steve Kimock-esque jazzy playing with more rock influenced soloing like we see from guys like Mark Karan

    Thanks for posting, this lineup is amazing. Bill on drums solo is a treat, the guitars are mindboggling & have a Mahavishnu jazz fusion type vibe at times. I have never seen this show before, it is a GEM, as good a Post Gd show as I have ever seen. Thanks for all your hard work.

    I love the 99 phil and friends with Kimock. They all kick ass, whether its with trey and page or the guys from SCI or the New Riders etc. I caught a show in 1999 right after kimock left when Phil was touring with Bob Dylan. It was a major dissapointment not to see Kimock but the four piece i caught still killed it. I love seeing Phil because he is all about the jams. People tell me they arent into phil and friends because phil cant sing and im like "who sees phil and friends for the singing?" I wouldnt care if they had a dog barking into the microphone during the songs i came to hear the music that happens after and in between the songs. Not to take anything away from the genius of Robert Hunter, but i can throw on a studio album at home to appreciate the songs. Live; the more jamming the better. Three song sets! Or just play dark star for 3 hours.

      Yes I got to agree with u because he did go to college for a lot more than just music , to me the Gratefuldead were all geniuses ! ❤️☮️🌹

      True, the jam is what makes the shows legendary. A Greatest hits set by any artist who has sang them all a few thousand times is a bore, I wanna see the band step out and jam away, long into the night.

    • @Mrmustard1380
      @Mrmustard1380 Год назад +1

      Absolutely true! And often times the vocals are great! Phil created a whole new way of jamming on the old GD stuff that we all know and love. Any show Phil does, is far more serious and musically compelling, than anything Mayer and Corporate will ever do.

    I always preferred the single drummer version of the Dead- gave Billy more room to be nimble. And Phil’s sound of course- great intensity. He is always good for pushing the pace nicely. A whole different vibe. Can’t really compare apples and oranges post-dead groups- so will just say this apple is tasty!

    • @done1675
      @done1675 3 года назад +1

      ONE. THOUSAND. PERCENT. The one drummer era of the GD was by far the best.

    • @cosmicslopass
      @cosmicslopass 2 года назад +1

      Many would agree. Myself included. Its almost a travesty that Mickey came back. It's a hard thing to say because I love Mickey but he kind of pushed GD into more roll and roll stadium music than the acid jazz direction they were on

    • @matthewmead2374
      @matthewmead2374 Год назад +1

      Agreed. 2 drummers locked the band into a beat that was hard to change on the fly. When it was just Billy he could speed up, slow down or pull out all together. He really controlled the pace of jams. With two drummers they couldn't make changes like that because it would throw one drummer out of sync. The polyrhythm of two drummers worked well at times- I really liked it during Scarlet-Fire segue segue jams, but it was in those deep modal mindfucks like dark star or playing where the lack of ability to alter the pace of the jams was really felt. I love those early seventies where everyone would drop out except Jerry. The band had a very light touch but became much heavier and more grounded with Mickey. And let's not forget the 20 or so minutes that drumz ate up that could of otherwise been dedicated to entire band jamming. I never was a huge drumz fan and it really made sets more predictable and limited the amount of jamming

    • @UnkleBen
      @UnkleBen Год назад

      Yes indeed. Billy is so free in this show to lead follow or well you know. buut Mickey always followed Jer, which is great when Jer was goin off, but when he got lost so did the song & was hard get back on track with Bobby's weird timing if Phil wasn't feeling the groove in that exct moment. Billy's jazz style just works better for the wth are we going jams... imho of course

      Yeah John Molo on drums is an absolute beast. I agree that this particular combo is way more engaging than dead and co. Thats gonma happen when you have Steve Kimock and Barry Sless on the same stage. Dead and co. is a big hot mess at times, these guys are tight, very locked in with one another.

      Phil Lesh’s contributions to the dead is vastly underrated outside of the people who really know… when Phil was on, the band was on. That melodic style made it really difficult and required the band to be a lot tighter in their jams. But when they were in sync boy was it magical.

      Ed M I guess I could see that, ... been to about 100 or so dead shows, and it’s just weird how they prop up John Mayer to sound and play just like Jerry.. I find it hard to have respect for those guys now, what I thought was special and unique has turned out to be just another money grab from a bunch of former heroes

    • @edm781
      @edm781 4 года назад +3

      @@rmhanseniiiI saw Jerry 95 times from '85 to '95. I completely disagree. That is the standard crotchety old fart sentiment. They are not propping up Mayer to sound just like Jerry. And they have all always played live music their entire lives, large or small, for the joy of it. Mayer has deep love & respect for the music and has learned as well as anybody. Sure it's not great all the time as the boys are all now well in to their '70's. I've only bothered to see D&C twice. The 2nd set Boulder Saturday night '17 was absolutely fresh, grade AAA+ psychedelic music, (1st set was ok but basic).

    • @rmhanseniii
      @rmhanseniii 4 года назад +1

      Ed M please... no way Jerry would’ve been proud of what they’re doing... no original songs, no artistic growth, just crummy versions of their own songs from 40 years ago. There are dead cover bands that sound better than them, no joke. It’s a little pathetic, people trying to relive what happened a long time ago... and young people claiming they’ve never heard anything better than that. I would have more respect for them if they were trying new ideas and moving on but they’re not all they’re doing is half assing it and chasing checks. They Ruined the legacy of one of the great American bands just because Bob Weir was too stupid to invest his money when he had the chance

    • @dubyuellem7534
      @dubyuellem7534 Год назад +2

      This is very different than the Dead & Co, this is much heavier, much more complex. This is not Weir & his subordinates singing the same handful of songs over and over year after year after year. No one guy can replace Jerry, of course (my fav was John Krazinski from Further if it had to be one) Here, Kimock is a killer, I can see why Jerry praised him and his talent, it's undeniable, as he can play any genre

    • @skylarmany2648
      @skylarmany2648 9 месяцев назад +1

      I have to disagree big time Furthur was the last band worth the price of admission. Band beyond description does not describe Dead and Slow. Only love can Phil, and John Kadlecik wipes the floor with Mayer as far as grateful dead is concerned. Mayer should stick to his whiny blues.
