@@chrisstevenson2622 That’s not my experience. My Rolex AD is very good and as a company, Rolex is doing a good job at maintaining quality production at high production volume.
It seems absolutely perfect, which means I broke a golden rule of mine and bought it online without even looking at it in real life - it was all because of this review, congratulations. 👌
@@SomeOneOneOne it's perfect, bracelet is high quality, clasp misaligns - it's a bit too high on the wrist and can catch stuff, but nonetheless this has become my favourite piece in the past few weeks, and I do own a modern tag heuer carrera and a seiko spring drive.
@@cyanx7 Awesome! Thx for the Feedback! What do you mean by the clasp is misaligned? Is it not centered on your wrist or do you mean the gap between the clasp and bracelet?
I feel every brand does at least one thing great on its watches and Seiko is no exception. Seiko absolutely delivers amazing dials, that's their specialty, at all price points too. This watch wasn't even on my radar, but it is now. Thank you.
I'm wearing my snkl23 right now. I still get lost in the beauty of this dial. And it's sub $100. I have it on a shark mesh strap and it looks the business!
This watch is absolutely great. One of my problems with Seiko is that most of their upper tier watches are 40mm or larger and a 37mm or 38mm watch is a much better fit for me. So I'm glad this one is on the smaller side.
This video finally convinced me to pull the trigger on this exact model...it is simply stunning, wears like a dream even the stock bracelet is the most comfortable one I've ever worn. It's absolutely a rival for the explorer and the aqua terra!
This video helped me make the decision to order it. After actually seeing it live and wearing it in front of me it is astonishing how elegant and well built this timepiece is. Very underrated watch as not many videos cover it. 600-750eur is a steal.
Yeah, you got yourself a real stealth stunner. Those dial details! It does look like DNA 🧬 strands as you mentioned when you get down close into the textures. The fact you get one of the newer 6R35 movement for well under $1k.. which they tend to hover around more or less in other watches that have it is great. Thanks for the review and much needed closer look at all the wonderful details of this one. The positives far outweoght any of the negative niggles you brought up, I think.
I bought this watch after watching this video a year ago. The more I wear it the more impressed I am. Made me realise I don’t need to add a Rolex explorer to my collection. It won’t add anything. In fact, this dial, with the gold second hand is much more attractive. Thank you for making me aware of this watch.
I own the 1959 alpinist limited edition which I picked up for not much more than the non Ltd, I just removed myself from the Explorer wait list despite the fact I was told just another 6 months, I think the piano black, bubble domed sapphire and mountain indices speak to me more than the Explorer now.
I just got the SJE085 too. Super sale at my local AD, but it sounds like you got the better deal. How much if you don't mind me asking? Wanna' sell the original bundt strap?
I have the SJE085 as well and got a pretty good deal, but not THAT good. I’m happy with what I paid, I love this watch!! But, so I stay happy with what I paid - I’m not going to ask what kind of deal you got 😂 Never wear it on the Bundt, but it is awesome on a NATO!
I love the 1959 Limited Edition and would have bought it in a heartbeat, regardless of the price, if it did not have a date. Nonetheless, it is gorgeous… and it is still available at my AD. 😀
Bought this watch after watching your review. It has now become the most worn watch in my collection, even above the PRX. The unsigned crown and the clasp are quite bewildering but it takes nothing away from the wearing experience. The dial is simply unparalleled.
I am very interested in this watch as well. I was wondering if you bought it at a store or online. I am very new to watches and don't want to be scammed or ripped off. Would you be willing to share some info with me?
I've got the mystic forest dial, it's just stunning. As you said it looks casual on the first look, but when you start paying attention or depending on the light exposure it's just amazing...
Thank you for this amazingly produced review. Purchased this exact model immediately after watching. I watch a lot of RUclips watch reviews and you definitely know how to capture a watch’s best angles compared to most reviewers. Looking forward to your next review, and can’t wait to see the watch in person!
I have the wonderful SPB167J “Sharp Edge” Presage in blue. This New Alpinist features a similarly intriguing blue dial and the same movement at half the price. For anyone interested, you really can’t go wrong here. Seiko’s got a winner with this one!
I bought this watch roughly a month ago for ~$550 after watching your video a couple times. And I am still surprised at how charming this watch is. Beautiful dial and beautiful hands really make this watch for me. Thanks for the video, I'm a fan.
I picked this watch up and I can’t believe how it exudes being a quality timepiece. Winding the watch (if you want to) is like butter. It keeps great time. The dial is gorgeous but subtle. The bracket is very nice too. A great purchase for the money. Really excellent.
Last year I missed out on the Seiko Ginza Alpinist with that extraordinary dial that is genuinely as close to Grand Seiko quality as you're going to get in a Seiko watch. This reminds me so much of that, not as unique and jaw dropping instead it's sophisticated, restrained and refined. As you said, this truly is an all-in-one watch.
I own Ginza Alpinist and completely disagree, Ginza looks like any other Ginza, not comparable to Grand Seiko. What does compare to Grand Seiko in regards of dials is SPB289J1 or otherwise called Mystic Forest Alpinist, which I own as well and it outshines the Ginza in regards of details and finish, but both spectacular in their own way
@@simonthomas5113 over 2k now i think... especially if Count by Singapore or Aussie Dollars... while i always dislike the old seiko alpinist design and look, i hated the gold green or SS/green looks and design. i absolutely love this new "re-issue" design of newer Alpinist from this past 1 or 2 years. however these ain't cheap. i acquired 1 Limited edition Ginza Alpinist.... ran out of stock damn quickly in singapore. cost me retail nearly 1300 SGDollar
I really like this line of Alpinists. The gray one is of particular interest to me. I haven't seen these in my 2 local Seiko Luxe ADs, but I haven't been in about 6 months. I have seen all the other Alpinists, including the 38mm "baby" Alpinists, which wear great. I would like to see at least 1 or 2 more micro adjusts, but I can understand why they don't go too crazy as it's a dressier watch. The gap in the clasp is weird though. I don't get it, but it probably wouldn't keep me away from the watch. I actually love the overbuilt 200m WR resistant spec, as it's part of the Alpinist charm. Depending on the dial, it really is sort of the Explorer for Seiko, at a fraction of the price. My SPB089 on a Strapcode bracelet is just a phenomenal GADA watch, lack of AR withstanding. I really wish I could speak to somebody at Seiko about the lack of signed crown. It's on my SPB089, and the only excuse I can think of as a differentiator for Presage is very lame. Sure, leave it off those low end Seiko 5 line watches, but I'd actually like to see the Prospex logo on their divers, and even this Alpinist. I realize some don't like that log for some reason, but at least it would fit with the line. The Presage line shouldn't be the only one that doesn't get a signed crown. What's crazy is they even extend that to Prospex models costing thousands of dollars. Really, Seiko?
You were not exaggerating. That dial is oddly complex and simple all at the same time. Also the applied indices and half polished half brush hands are nice finishing touches. Place another logo on there and this watch would cost a lot more. One could slap IWC ingenieur branding here easily and it would be a lot more. Super valid point about shiny markers that disappear in the light. Plus large power reserve + 200m water resist. Well done here by Seiko Pity about the bezel and odd clasp.
Hi Dave! I am sitting at my desk at work here in Japan and was admiring my watch that I purchased in Ginza one sunny Sunday about 6-12 months ago. I just love the watch and was curious if anyone ever reviewed it and came across you video. I own some very expensive watches like Rolex, JLC, Grand Seiko and Omega. Today for some reason I decided to wear this watch and I so like the way it wears and looks I started wondering if any one ever reviewed it! It really is an eye pleaser. I learned a lot more from your video and now appreciate it even more! Thanks so much for your review. See you in Ginza someday!
I’ve owned this watch in the cream dial for about a year now. Despite my issues with the clasp, thickness, and date window, it has that certain je ne sais quoi for me and has become a staple in my rotation (though I’m still waiting for someone to make an aftermarket bracelet with a better clasp).
You could swap the clasp Kevin. You may've already considered this?, but if not, an after market clasp with on-the-fly adjustment from eBay (or any of the other online markets) can transform a bracelet!
That’s a gorgeous watch with (mostly) great specs! After watching this, I pulled out my SARB035; I’ll wear it this week! Sometimes I forget what a great watch it is, too! I’ve got it on a Strapcode Boyer “Super O” bracelet; this corrected the factory bracelet’s shortcomings.
Hi from Spain. I have exactly the same model. I bought it at a very good price (€420) but also with a certain skepticism about what I was going to find. But after a few months of use, it has become one of my favorites in the collection, both for comfort and legibility, not to mention that it is a very versatile watch with a simple change of strap.... Greetings.
EUR 420 is a steal proce for this watch. I can get it from an authorised retailer in EU for abot EUR 690 and I am not sure because it is quite a steep price. But maybe I will eventually pull the trigger. Cheers
Beautiful watch!!! So beautiful, I had to order one. And to be honest, it’s really gorgeous in person as well. I love it. I ordered it from an AD in Asia, it was here in less than a week. I think this one will be a “LONG TERM” favorite for sure! The power reserve is amazing. Also, I paid less than $600 including shipping. I’m very happy with this purchase.
Great macro shots Dave. I have the earlier Alpinist (green dial with numerals) and the movement has been really solid. On the dials - Seiko really can make 'em... on a sunny day they really look amazing
I recently picked up a Shark tooth Alpinist and absolutely love it, except the band/clasp. The watch is just rock solid, but the lack of microadjust and the gapping of the clasp could be improved. Spent a little more and picked up a Strapcode bracelet and it is a big improvement, except for the male endlinks. Can’t have it all I guess.
Great review! But I wouldn't call the 6R their "Premium" offering. The 6R35 sit along side the PM80, in the mid-range tier. The 4R would be their entry level and the 8L would be their premium movement.
@r2l100 Why would you want an 80 hour power reserve? Just think of all that wear and tear as the watch sits unworn. It's about as clever as buying bottled water.
This watch has been on my radar for some time after seeing this review. Few weeks ago at the airport they had the brown dial version of this, and it was amazing! I also tried the Longiness hydroconquest but the Seiko felt so much nicer, much more luxurious. That was a surprise . Have now bought the deep lake model and I love it. Thanks for beautiful video work.
I’ve been anxiously awaiting this review. Well spoken and it makes me really want to see it in person. The clasp is the only concerning point, as a good fit makes all the difference in wanting to reach for it every day.
very nice watch and I love it. I also have one the spb243j1, it was accurate the first few months +1-2 per day, but suddenly it's accuracy came crashing down to -14 per day. Just regulated it using a timegrapher app and now it's better around +5 -5 per day and now I'm happy about it! Also a 3000 grit sandpaper works and matches well when you have some minor scratches on the clasp, but work it it in a single direction/motion.
I bought the SBDC161 in weave brown from Seiko House Ginza last week and im very happy with it. Im not crazy about the shiny leather strap that it comes on so Im going to swap it out with a dark brown perlon, but that OEM bracelet your blue version has is also very handsome!
Very good review of a very good watch Dave. The Alpinist is a true GADA watch, suitable for 90% of situations most folk will find themselves in. If the Explorer, as a one watch collection has a flaw, it's the lack of a date. Sure, aesthetically it's better off without it, as would be this iteration of the Alpinist I'd argue. But functionally it's better with a date comp. And the date is executed well. Although I genuinely prefer it, I don't like the idea of a 6 o'clock date on this piece for some reason. I do wonder if a trapezoidal date aperture (like on vintage Universal Genevè Pole routers) would be an improvement? It would maintain most of the angles on the indices... I've had a 'regular' Alpinist (the SPB123J Champagne w/- gold variant) for two years plus, which I wear on an after market jubilee bracelet. It's accurate to ~ +/-2 spd and by far my favourite 'daily' watch, despite sharing the watch-box with pieces others may consider more desirable. It's a keeper: I will never part with it voluntarily.
I like the fact that the watch looks good on a bracelet and even if you were to strap on a blue leather strap, it would look like a really beautiful and luxurious looking dress watch from a very respectable brand with great horological history. In my opinion, I would think it looks even better than the Seiko cocktail time. Thanks for the review. Looking forward to the next one.
One of the best reviews of any watch I've looked at. Nice watch to. 19mm lug width doesn't bother me. If have an Oris and a Longines with 19mm lug width and they're are more choices for straps with this size size than ever. I'm not a bracelet fan so it's just as well.
For me, this review put everything into perspective. I now appreciate how this could easily fit my 8 inch wrist and quash a desire to buy a more expensive alternative.
Unless you are a fan of larger pieces this will wear a treat on an 8" wrist. I have a 7.75" wrist and the Alpinist is great. Although it wears differently to a 39mm Explorer 214270 and/or a 38mm AquaTerra the size is comparable. It's one of my favourite and most worn watches.
Thanks for your review, you’re making an amazing job. I discovered this exact model thanks to you, ordered it and couldn’t be happier, my new daily watch. Keep it up bringing more exceptional under the radar watches. Greetings from Ecuador 🇪🇨
Looks absolutely stunning. Apart from the gap at the clasp, I would say it's almost perfectly executed. Do I buy this or another guitar that I also don't need?
If it was perfect in every way who would buy the Grand Seiko. They can nail it but why would they, I see the same in phono cartridges, every $500 gets you closer to their holy grail. Great review, looking to upgrade my 40 year old Seiko, it still works like a charm, bought it new. 😎
Got mine today and it is so awesome! Crystal, case and finish is classy. It may not leave my wrist for a long time. Adjustment was not a problem at all, took me a about 30 minutes to get it set.
I cannot describe how much I am enjoying this watch. The dial/hands/indexes combo, the comfortable-ness and lume…did I mention the dial in different situations? So much better and interesting than the Explorer. I really came here to say thanks! I saw this and was interested, but your review really helped me to make a final decision on this without seeing it in person. This watch now has me contemplating selling others in my collection. Again, thanks for the great content. I’m rather certain this will be a keeper and a heritage piece to pass down to the next generation
@@daviG27 Explorer 2 maybe is another level but not not basic explorer its so boring that black dial, and why we have to compare these 2 anyway, 620€ i paid for my deep lake and i couldnt be happier. The dial Details are insane on this watch
@@lihaniska87 I just do not agree with you and find the Explorer I a very underrated watch. I believe most of the people have never seen or tried it on the wrist
I have the champagne dial version (SPB241), I do love this design and might also pick up this deep lake version. The negative thing that I did notice is that it seemed to be more susceptible to magnetism than my other watches. I've had to demagnetize it a couple times already. Not a huge deal but just an annoyance.
Urgh, 19mm bracelet and their dinky little clasp... So close to perfection. I have the baby Alpinist SPB155 and it's 90% there, but I'm so glad it came with 20mm lugs and is compatible with 3rd party bracelets designed for regular Alpinist.
I have the blue dial 157 and I agree it’s pretty close. I don’t have a bracelet, and natos look okay, but maybe a bracelet will have me wanting to wear it more.
BWC brother man. Yep. The 19mm bracelet with so little taper turned me off to this one. Picked up my SPB155 and it's become "the one." It does everything. I've worn it for 3 straight weeks and I'm over the moon with it.
You can't go wrong with either version of the Alpinist. I personally got myself the baby Alpinist SPB155 instead because I found an AD that was offering 30% off Seiko watches. At $500 then it's a no brainer. Really do love that green dial. The bracelet on this Seiko doesn't seem all that bad. It has a milled clasp just like a Mido Ocean Star 200 but minus the diver extension.
Hey Dave another great review and video as always!!! Absolutely love this watch congratulations!!! I own the “Ginza” variant of this and the dial is absolutely amazing! I’m still tempted to get this one too!!
I bought one a couple of weeks ago and it is fantastic except (as you pointed out) the bloody clasp. I first saw that gap on one of the 60’s style last year and thought it odd then. I agree with you on pretty well everything you say but I’m still going to keep it for a good while. I think it’s just stunning to look at.
That is one very awesome watch! Seiko nailed it with the design and the specs, this one is a keeper for sure. Great 👍 review Dave and photos really make this watch shine. Cheers from a Nova Scotia subscriber. M.
Man…I was spending time trying to justify a Green Sunbeam but looking at this review I think i’m stuck. I love this review and it looks great. Well done!
Love the Alpinist in general and this one's no different. I'd even say that it surpasses my expectations b/c it has the specs of a durable watch with elegant lines for both a casual and formal setting. Thanks for sharing this nice discovery (for me anyways).
Bought the green one. They didn't make it a sunburst so the green looks like black most of the time. It really goes with everything you wear. Best everyday-watch i own.
Great review, Dave. I think this watch is stunning, and will most likely be adding it to my collection soon. I have an SPB155 that has a very similar bracelet, and I find it odd that the "gap" on the clasp that you see on a lot of Seikos and other less expensive watches is always criticized, while the almost identical gap on a Rolex explorer (or some other model) is not a problem. I guess that's because the gap looks better on a Rolex, lol. I'd prefer at least 3 micro adjustments, but I don't have a problem getting an acceptable fit.
Talking about that one and the Tissot PRX Powermatic (I love the retro and minimalist look on both), wich one should you get and wich one offers higher quality? I also have the Victorinox INOX Automatic in my target. Your review was awesome, good job! Greetings from Spain
I got this for £476 new from an authorized dealer in UK, I can't wait to get it. I was after something which has great lume and reliable movement,70h power reserve is just great, plus 38mm is perfect. I always loved Seiko. Is it any anti reflective coating?
I'm interested in this piece. Which UK AD did you get it from if you don't mind me asking. Best I can see this particular model is £585 including a 10% discount.
@@squeezyv I got it from Babla's Jewellers , from London, it was the last piece though. I love the watch, colour, design and really great lume, however the timekeeping on this particular piece is rubbish, first 3 days was -20 sec/day, than a week later it started to slow down, now is around -60/day ,dial up in it's box, right out Seikos tolerance -15/+25/day. Everything else is great, great crown action, really smooth wind, the clasps is a wrong, small ,2 micro adjustments and feature a huge gap when is closed, plus the links are not very tight and rattle, but the bracelet is fluid, the watch seats a bit too high on the wrist too. I would keep ot if the movement was within tolerance 👍
I consider this watch another missed opportunity by Seiko. It's supposed to be a tool watch but it has a 19mm lug width, high polish surfaces, clasp with only two adjustments and no particular reason to be so thick. Beautiful dial but I would classify the watch as a dress watch that is toolish not a tool watch that is dressy.
I'm with you on this, it's a nice flashy watch looking toolish. I have a Longines Conquest that does the same - 30 bar WR, screw-down crown and decent crown guards. But polished bracelet, no knurling on the crown, butterfly clasp and horrors! no lume. It's the blue dial version, black one does have lume.
@@poulwinther I don't have that problem at all, for me the lugs fit just fine. My wrists are wide and thin though, the shape of a wrist make a big difference.
That gap in the clasp has been there since the Sarb033/035 series. I replaced the bracelet on mine almost immediately. The same gap exists on the SPB155 I own, absolutely love, and that one's been replaced as well. I'd love to know how this continues to get by Seiko's design team.
Sigh…another "missed it by *that* much" release from my favorite brand. But it's still crazy-compelling: the watch I'm saving up for is another "homage" from Seiko: either their Presage SPB059J ("Laurel'), or their Presage SSA387J1 (Cocktail Time), both with power-reserve. But, nit-picking aside, and in spite of my already having the Alpinist SARB 017 (which ain't going nowhere), this one tickles my fancy. Yes, the clasp-gap bugs me almost as much as it does you, but I likely could manage in terms of the limited adjustability (slightly over 7" wrists here). Have to seriously think this one over, thanks to you. ;-)
I reluctantly bought the Presage cocktail time. My wife was with me while I was watch shopping and I wanted another Seiko diver. She said I had to many and I needed a dress watch (UGGHH, lesson learned never bring the wife). Well I bought it and hated it. I wouldn't even wear it out.So we went for dinner one night and I gave it a shot. Well I have to say the watch grew on me and now it's become my dinner watch.Good luck my friend !
Thanks for the review on this beautiful watch. I will probably regret asking this but I looked around a bit and I am left wondering what are the differences between the SBDC159, SPB249J1, and APB249.
The benefit of both brush and polish on the hands is actually even bigger than "fancy versus" practical! Brush and polish come alive/contrast to their backgrounds very differently depending on the light (for example, in bright light a high polish hand actually disappears against a dark dial but is super visible in low light, while the opposite is the case for a brushed hand). Having both means high contrast against the dial all the time. It's a big reason why Grand Seiko hands very often get even more complex, faceting their hands and mixing finishing techniques in super elegant ways.
@@NhatHuyNg so he made the argument that brush=practical and polish=fancy. I was pointing out that it's deeper than that, both are practical in different lighting scenarios.
Thank you for this great review. I saw this video and decided to pull the trigger. Wearing this watch makes me happy. Sometimes I like a more rugged outdoor look and I am thinking on changing the bracelet for a leather or Nato strap but the bracelet feels so good. There is really nothing that needs change. I love this watch more more every day. Thanks for the great tip
Hi Dave. Great video and exceptional camera work showing this watch. It’s such a frustration that Seiko put so much effort into some design aspects of the watch, but then not others. Frankly I’m surprised as Japanese companies are renowned for continued improvement until perfection is achieved.
Been trying to scratch my Rolex itch with lots of discount options and this one is promising. However, for "only" 3x the $, the Ball Engineer II has my vote. Has the same annoying strap width but the movement is amazing, 70 hr reserve, fab bracelet and history too ... however, can't touch the dial on the Seiko. Classic struggle, looks vs substance divided by spare cash. Great review!
Personally the date window is actually not bad at all IMO, it takes up a spot of a large triangle, keeping the overall balance. I understand that some may find the dial intriguing, I certainly do, but I feel like it distracts too much from the cleanliness. Maybe its different in real life, but online it seems a bit too harsh. Always a big fan of half-brushed dauphine hands, my favorite handset, with perfect length as you said. Going to Japan so I will see if I can get a glimpse of one in real life and buy it for cheaper if its really better than the online photos.
I'm having a hard time seeing how this is a Rolex alternative. I really like this watch. This would be perfect for someone who like Seiko, likes this look of watch, who is really taken by this watch. But, if what you really want is a Rolex, it has nothing to do with timekeeping, it is a status symbol, you really want to treat yourself, etc. If anything, I would think of this watch for someone who normally wears a $200 watch and is looking for an upgrade.
I have the Ginza Alpinist SBP259 and I am looking at the SPB289 Mystic Forest and I highly recommend this series of watches. You get a LOT of value for your money with these models.
With you completely on this review. My Ginza could easily be my only watch if I weren't such an addict. I nearly always wear it on bracelet and the only real downside is the clasp. The way it sticks out is annoying but if that's the only fault, it has to be forgiven.
Seiko need to drop that X on there watches faces, that's the one thing that make the watch looks cheap. It has really put me off buying there watches across that range. I understand there marketing here, but it's so large in your face and unnecessary.
Regarding the 6R35 movement: Correct me if I am wrong, but the 6R35 is more serviceable by local watch repair technicians than most variants of the Swatch Powermatic 80 due to the silicon parts and special lubricants, free-sprung balance etc in the movement. I asked one of the best watch repair techs in western Canada (Vancouver) who only works on Swiss movements, and he told me that he doesn't work on the Powermatic 80 movements. I am not sure why....but if I had to guess these movements are probably just replaced by Swatch group when they need repair or regulation. To me, in a special watch like this, the 6R35 is much more appealing as a result.
@@zeechris9220 Normally I believe all Swatch powermatic 80 based movements are shipped to one of a few locations worldwide to be repaired or replaced. IE. Canada has one location only. The United States has two or three locations only.
I have just ordered this watch based on your review. I have long held the view that higher echelon Swiss watches are luxury goods priced as such rather than on intrinsic value, give me a good quality Orient Star or Seiko every time.
I have exactly this watch and unfortunately it is garbage. It does not keep time. Skips ahead, falls back. Seiko “recalibrated” it, and it is no better. The band is also cheap and scratches extremely easily. My Seiko Kinetic from 1995 is so much better.
I agree with everything you said about this watch. Your issue with the clasp did catch my eye as well. I have the bamboo dial version, and it's beautiful!!❤
Great review on a beautiful watch. Personally I loved the cathedral hands the Alpinist used to have. They matched the hour markers better. The macro shots are beautiful, but also clearly showed that white hair, or is it lint, at the wrong end of the hour hand (visible at 08:40), which is not your fault of course. Personally, I’d go back to Seiko to have that removed or cleaned, if you’re going to keep the watch. Or is it a reflection of your camera set up?
Many thanks for the very good review; having a 19 mm width is not a problem, since you are going to use Seiko SS bracelet, which is awsome. A non signed crowned still remains very odd from Seiko at this price point. Overall, it is the best sports, dive and stylish dress watch that could be used all the time, with high accuracy and power reserve.
I appreciate your level of detail on this review. Getting Grand Seiko-King Seiko vibes from the case and dial. I appreciate the intricate cocktail time dark olive Presage with beveled hands and contrasting gold second hand which has a lower height than this watch. I will pay closer attention to this line though. Thanks for your work!
I picked one up for $550 USD and am really impressed with it and have actually become quite attached, it’s getting a lot of wrist time. They know how to do the basics well, or exceedingly well. Build quality, polishing, beautiful dial, lovely Grand Seiko style handset, all make this watch look like something twice its price. The bracelet is great, suits it very well and the clasp gap doesn’t bother me in the slightest. With regard to wearability, the sizing is perfect for me - don’t judge it before seeing it in person. (7 1/4 wrist for reference) Now, in the same breathe - Could they improve this in future? Sure. For me that would include removing the exhibition case back and the unnecessary text on the dial, I love the mountaineering history and this should be honoured properly, similar to Longines and their master collection. I believe Seiko should seriously consider a v2 to this watch as it’s very strong out of the gate and with a few tweaks it could be a real killer at this price point.
I wish we can reach a point when we stop comparing any watch to a freaking Rolex.
Hahah I agree. It gets the views though and in my case, I’m comparing a lot of things to a white OP39 😅

Got a new one for 580€. Absolute steal. A swiss timepiece with similiar specs would cost over 2000€
@@TheMonsterHunterTV that is a fact. This one fells like you are wearing Grand Seiko.
I’d describe it as Seiko’s version of the Omega Aqua Terra.
This is my Omega Railmaster especially with the rounded case and “track” around the dial.
The aqua terrra is nice, this looks ugly af imo.
@@Jesse-Rodriguez do you have an insta name if so I can message you on there
I have the SJE085 as well and got a pretty good deal, but not THAT good. I’m happy with what I paid, I love this watch!! But, so I stay happy with what I paid - I’m not going to ask what kind of deal you got 😂
Never wear it on the Bundt, but it is awesome on a NATO!
I love the 1959 Limited Edition and would have bought it in a heartbeat, regardless of the price, if it did not have a date. Nonetheless, it is gorgeous… and it is still available at my AD. 😀
@@edteach3r I know what you’re saying about the date but I genuinely overcoming those shortcomings and getting one, it’s amazing
Hello my friend ! Is possible to measure only the diameter of the crystal ? Not the diameter of the watch , only the crystal . Thank you in advance
Do u work for Seiko 🧐
I did exactly the same and I love it
Price pls... Here in India it costs around 840usd. Is it worth the price?
I have the wonderful SPB167J “Sharp Edge” Presage in blue. This New Alpinist features a similarly intriguing blue dial and the same movement at half the price. For anyone interested, you really can’t go wrong here. Seiko’s got a winner with this one!
Got myself the "bamboo forest" limited to 1000 pieces. I bought it in Thailand, as a souvenir from there, as it's only sold there. Love it!
Also took me a year to warming up to this series but now I have it…..man, this is what Seiko is all about.
I bought this watch roughly a month ago for ~$550 after watching your video a couple times. And I am still surprised at how charming this watch is. Beautiful dial and beautiful hands really make this watch for me. Thanks for the video, I'm a fan.
Presage is better than this ?
What does compare to Grand Seiko in regards of dials is SPB289J1 or otherwise called Mystic Forest Alpinist, which I own as well and it outshines the Ginza in regards of details and finish, but both spectacular in their own way
I see the Ginza is still available if you're willing to pay 3 x RRP with the scalpers.
Well done here by Seiko
Pity about the bezel and odd clasp.
I’m very happy with this purchase.
which ad did you buy it from?
I can’t be the only one who would rather have 28,800 and ~40h power reserve than 21,600 and ~80 power reserve.
The theme is a lake in mountains. The pattern is a metaphor for ripples on a placid mountain lake. Rather than ropes or dna I would think.
very nice watch and I love it.
Great watch, beautiful dial. A tad too thick for me though. Enjoy it! I really wish Seiko would have more affordable no date watches.
Wow that is an amazing camera Dave. Them macro shots are stunning
Looks absolutely stunning. Apart from the gap at the clasp, I would say it's almost perfectly executed. Do I buy this or another guitar that I also don't need?
Once you get into guitars AND watches, you're toast. I know of what I speak.
If it was perfect in every way who would buy the Grand Seiko. They can nail it but why would they, I see the same in phono cartridges, every $500 gets you closer to their holy grail. Great review, looking to upgrade my 40 year old Seiko, it still works like a charm,

I cannot describe how much I am enjoying this watch. The dial/hands/indexes combo, the comfortable-ness and lume…did I mention the dial in different situations?
So much better and interesting than the Explorer.

I have the champagne dial version (SPB241), I do love this design and might also pick up this deep lake version. The negative thing that I did notice is that it seemed to be more susceptible to magnetism than my other watches. I've had to demagnetize it a couple times already. Not a huge deal but just an annoyance.

I live in Canada how do I buy these watches in Japan
Urgh, 19mm bracelet and their dinky little clasp... So close to perfection. I have the baby Alpinist SPB155 and it's 90% there, but I'm so glad it came with 20mm lugs and is compatible with 3rd party bracelets designed for regular Alpinist.
I have the blue dial 157 and I agree it’s pretty close. I don’t have a bracelet, and natos look okay, but maybe a bracelet will have me wanting to wear it more.
No micro adjust means at a minimum needs half links... but no half links, so mega fail.
Why they didn’t go 20 is a mistake imho

I bought one a couple of weeks ago and it is fantastic except (as you pointed out) the bloody clasp. I first saw that gap on one of the 60’s style last year and thought it odd then. I agree with you on pretty well everything you say but I’m still going to keep it for a good while. I think it’s just stunning to look at.
How much did you pay for the watch.?
@West2WesternGhats I bought an SPB249J yesterday (10/07/2024 ) new from a jewellery store in Western Sydney, Australia for Au $862 or US $577 .
Did they repurpose the clasp from the SARB033? The unsightly gap and the 2 microadjustments were the same issues then as with this piece.
Great review - I think this looks endlessly better than the previous Alpinist re-issue.
Agreed,I know the "baby" alpinists have their own fans, but I found the design to be a bit too....dated, this design is absolutely timeless
@@alanmckinnon6791 For me the main Longines horror is the never ending lugs. They all look exceptional and all wear like crap.
@@poulwinther I don't have that problem at all, for me the lugs fit just fine. My wrists are wide and thin though, the shape of a wrist make a big difference.
@@poulwinther 37 mm should work then.
@@jimwatchyyc It's not really about the diameter. I have 43's that wear much better than 39 Longines'.
It's a big reason why Grand Seiko hands very often get even more complex, faceting their hands and mixing finishing techniques in super elegant ways.
pretty sure thats exactly what he said in the video. did you miss anything?
@@NhatHuyNg so he made the argument that brush=practical and polish=fancy. I was pointing out that it's deeper than that, both are practical in different lighting scenarios.

Thank you for this great review. I saw this video and decided to pull the trigger. Wearing this watch makes me happy.
300% is a lot , you can only get some entry pieces for ball eng.
As I just suggested to Peter Kosta,
a video comparing this Seiko Alpinist
and the Pitzmann II would be great.

Incredible camera work and choreography... stunning stunning shots... lovely watch made lovelier by the videography
Thats sounds like only can be fix in official store right ?
@@zeechris9220 Normally I believe all Swatch powermatic 80 based movements are shipped to one of a few locations worldwide to be repaired or replaced. IE. Canada has one location only. The United States has two or three locations only.

If you don’t like to watch, GTFO 😤
I have just ordered this watch based on your review. I have long held the view that higher echelon Swiss watches are luxury goods priced as such rather than on intrinsic value, give me a good quality Orient Star or Seiko every time.
I have exactly this watch and unfortunately it is garbage. It does not keep time. Skips ahead, falls back. Seiko “recalibrated” it, and it is no better. The band is also cheap and scratches extremely easily. My Seiko Kinetic from 1995 is so much better.
Yes 😡
I agree with everything you said about this watch. Your issue with the clasp did catch my eye as well. I have the bamboo dial version, and it's beautiful!!❤
This watch is cool AF. How does the watch do against magnetism?
The thickness on a clean cylindrical shape works for me. Some of the very best watches like the glashuttes cut that same profile
Beautiful watch, not much of a Seiko fan these days. But this watch pulls me back into the brand 👌🏻
I walked into an AD today and this watch wasn't on my radar but after I saw it I had to try it on. It looked great in person.
I absoluty love how you show us affordable watches - thanks!
Beautiful watch. I’ve been interested in the Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 but this one seems to rival it.
Nice job; and I appreciate your focusing on the attainable!

(7 1/4 wrist for reference)
Now, in the same breathe - Could they improve this in future?
This is an excellent review. I never noticed how intricate the dial actually is. I always thought it was flat stripes.
