Benny slips in quite a few references to other jazz tunes. I caught "beginning to see the light", and definitely heard one more that I don't know the name of. Has anyone else got more of them?
Hey jeez do you have the rest of this gig? I used to have it somewhere on a video years ago as a kid, man I watched it until you could hardly see anything anymore! They did this great ellington medley, benny green play this animal solo, just incredible stuff. would be great to see if you had it
at 1:55 Benny plays 10ths in left hand, but uses his 4th finger on some black notes... so at one point he's playing Bb with D a 10th above with 4th finger and thumb! Then an Eb with G 10th above with 4th finger and thumb! That's a crazy stretch
@jtromsness Cheers man, you've made my day! There's another quote at 1:05 that I think might be "Rockin' in Rhythm" but I'm not sure. Also, I think he quotes "Cottontail" at 3:27 :)
@jazz24p7 would appreciate having the number of the CD. I live in France and will try to get the DVD through my friend in Germany. - then let you know. The WDR is a great musical organisation - I used to live near Cologne for two years. The german radio and TV organisations are sponsored by each independent "Länder" ( or state), and so you have the wonderful musical organisations in Hanover, Munich, Berlin, Stutgart, Hamburg. See if you can get on internet the "SAT" tv programmes in Germany.
hi remil, I don't know the name of the original gig, no. I have tried a good few times to look for it online, but never could find it. Maybe someone watching here could put it up if they have it, it was such a brilliant vid.
Yeah... it seemed like he was just kind of stringing together memorized licks at some points. But he was definitely still able to make it original and cool.
I am talking about his arms waving. Being a bassplayer (big bands), we always hated conducters, since drummer or me could kick band off any time. Of course in studio it was sometimes needed, but shit - everybody was a sight reader, could see pp or forte - so why conduct? All you need is to say: One Two, One Two Three - - - John pointing at sections looks ridiculous - they (even Germans) could read!
Ray brown..the best
He's channeling Oscar, Phineas Newborn and even some old time, greasy Bud Powell bebop, but it's natural. Really amazing!
Off the charts great!
Damn Benny Just tears it up
brown & green !
Amazing sax group, they seem to play more like an organism than as individuals.
I want to be like this song when I grow up

It would seam that way, yes. ;-p
Hey you happen to know the name of the video? I was maybe it might be online or something.
omg i actually thought the SAME exact thing
Oscar and Gene first equal for me, closely followed by Monty and Benny.
there are octaves if you r a musician then u should hear it immediately ( srry for my english)
Is that Oliver Peters on tenor?
Bennie paying Homage to Phineas Newborn Jr.If I had tech.I'd do it to!Put on World Of Piano By Phineas and see what I'm talking about.
those are not octaves i am affraid.... but the video is amazing

TUBA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is it just me or does Benny Green sit closer to the piano than most pianists?
Nah, the suit's too big.

John Clayton is confusing the band.
you could write a quote book with Benny's solo.
