So proud of our hometown drummer. This performance is everything. In high school, when Hamilton came to work with my drumline in '86, we had absolutely no idea who we were standing in front of. Not really. We were told we were about to be in the presence of greatness, but we hadn't experienced it like this. If we had seen something like this we wouldn't have been able to keep hold of our sticks for the nerves. One of the best of all time.

@@Benjybass I feel like it's worth mentioning that I got Rhythm is the original, so other Rhythm Changes tunes as Oleo or Rhythm-a-ning are actually based on the original Gershwin
This band is great. My friend Clay on trumpet solo! Love the piano soloist too. Great arrangement. We have some of their wonderful charts that I pull out to play with my college band. Jeff is amazing from the beginning and then notches it up even further at the shout. Wow!
This is very happy and sad at the same time, just recently saw their concert in California. A decade later, there are only 4 founding members left. Clayton is dead. Very Upsetting. Rest in Paradise.
Where was this? Just curious, haven't listened to enough bird myself. Also does anyone know if 2:56 is a lick from somewhere or if its improv because that was smooth!
For those of you who want to dig a little deeper, there are two/three excellent interviews with Jeff Hamilton on You Tube I heartily recommend. I come from a musical family; I consider myself pretty savvy though I do not play an instrument, I am an educated listener and, also sing. But I was fascinated by the things Jeff had to say about the art of drumming, what it takes, who he likes and why, and what he thinks of the younger generation coming up now, who love jazz and will pass the torch when the time comes! I learned a great deal....And yeah, these guys swing bigtime!!!
Cynthia Hawkins I’ve seen Jeff and John a few times over the years, and mainly in Europe. I’ve also seen, here on YT, an interview with Jeff. I find him one of the best lyrical/melodious drummers. Laying down the beat/drive mainly thru his cymbals appeals very much to me. Plus the fact that i’m from Oz and have seen many squatty roo’s. So lets bloody enjoy this great swingin’ ripper & Cheers, wherever you are!
Cynthia Hawkins Still, after 4 yrs you wrote your comment, i do prefer the Benny Carter version he preformed in Japan & at the Montreux Festival in Switzerland, in the mid 1970’s. But this band MC is an absolute bloody ripper! Enjoy/Dig & Cheers from Oz!
Heard them perform in Orange County, California a few years back. It was my wife's surprise birthday present for me. I knew they were good, but nothing prepared for for this greatness. Seeing them live in person was a high point of my musical life.
Awesome,Seen the band twice now, when they came to England, had a chat to some of the band members at the end of the show.Great band and great group of guys.
100% right. That movie is everything oposite of drummer's playing and( hopefuly) the way that teachers treat their students. This is music.....joy and laughter!
one dislike. wow. I feel for that guy. amazeballs. this band is hot. Loving them all but especially Tamir and Mr Hamilton. Wish John Clayton was pounding that bass though Christoph Luty is super great.
john whipp I think you have to be in the right mood. Its a lot of solos. I didn't dislike this, but maybe a tad too long on solos. Thats my guess on why some dislikes
This never gets old.
Never
Agreed

Jeff Hamilton is my favorite drummer in Jazz. Big bands and small groups, he can do it all!
I love the pianist yell at 8:31. These are musicians having fun.
Jeff Hamilton is putting on a big band drumming clinic on this one! Geez!
For those out there who will understand: the chord changes are the same as "I Got Rhythm".

Tamir Hendelman is somewhere else man oh my god

What a musician Jeff Hamilton is.
That pianist. Amazing. And the whole band. Love them!
Yes! Pianist is Tamir Hendelman. He and Jeff H and bassist Christoph Luty are the Jeff Hamilton trio.
This rhythm section is incredible
That china cymbal at 7:38! I listen over and over... Every time the hair on the back of my neck stands up! Perfect!
Shades of the Oscar Peterson days. Makes it gain another several feet in altitude.
This is great big band rendition of "Squatty Roo". Big band music never gets old for me!
I come back to this video every so often and I'm never disappointed, what a ride!
I love the looks of complete respect they give each other during the solos. And they all really get in to it!
Are you freaking kidding me? Those solos are out of this world..
Wow...what a band. And Hamilton killing it like he always does!
That whole band is simply having a good time. That's the way music should be played.
Did anyone else notice the call back to anthropology by Parker in the trombone solo?
harrison k absolutely!

Beautiful, beautiful and beautiful. Great orchestra!
That solo ! 🔥🔥🔥
'Whiplash' it is not. This is joyful, happy, swinging music. It doesn't get much better than this.
yes your right!
100% right. That movie is everything oposite of drummer's playing and( hopefuly) the way that teachers treat their students. This is music.....joy and laughter!
My name is actually Kai Sanford and I wish the original composer Johnny Hodges could hear this wonderful version of his own song

That's not John Pizzarelli on guitar - that's Graham Dechter. Also amazing. It doesn't get any better than this, folks!
Graham Dechter is the regular member - John Pizzarelli apears as a guest on the second half of the concert.
1:16 is is similair to Dexter Gordon's solo on tenor madness
they went ham after 8:00
The 3 dislikes must have no pulse

Це називається РУБАЄМ ДЖАЗ, ХОЛЄРА ЯСНА! Браво!!
これは、ほんとにすごいと思う笑
YOW YOW! How bout THEM APPLES?
What aspect of big band as a viable art form does this group not display, none!
+Harry Petersen Put another way this band is doing everything you need to believe in the genre as an art form.
Who plays lead trumpet? I love his sound
Bijon Watson
What did the trombone soloist quote at the beginning of his solo? That sounded very familiar.
+MajorasMaskMailman
Anthropology by Charlie Parker
Thanks dude
He quoted "Antropology" by Charlie Parker.
Noob to this music....,but I can here the influence on rock, 100%
Bruh Mr. Bean on the bass
The pianist looks like Canadian PM Justin Trudeau.
