to say Jeff Hamilton has good chops is probably the most understated thing I've heard in the last couple of years!!! He is a world class musician who happens to play drums.
He has been my favorite living drummer for decades. I rank him right up there with Joe Morello, Papa Jo Jones and many, many others. A true musician who makes me FEEL the music. I've been a jazz drummer since the early 70's and this is my favorite style of all music. Thank you!
Just found Graham Dechter (on RUclips) today. Excellent. Nice job landing this rhythm section too! (I grew up with Jeff H in Richmond and remember him aceing the drums contest in elementary school with perfect rhythm).
Thoroughly enjoyable rendition of a nicely swinging standard. That these four play so well together is a tribute to their individual talents, and any one of them could claim leadership of an identical quartet- this time Graham Dechter deserved and earned his opportunity. Follow them all on Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra clips.
Great play what a performance ! and..the best accompany you can wish... John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton ! super ! nice sound. love your guitar.. Fender twin sound ! thanks for posting this wonderful song
I saw the Hamilton clayton quartet with russel Malone the night of the Ray Brown tribute in OC . Special night. They were tight. The Ray Brown family was there too.
When all is said and done, young Graham Dechter is already one of the greatest of jazz guitarists. The expressions on the faces of Hamilton and Clayton as he solos signify it best. I THINK I hear some influences in Dechter's playing from other guitar greats--Montgomery, Green, Kessel for certain--but Dechter's talent and completeness as a jazz player make him stand out stylistically and musically on his own. He's uniquely inspired. He comes along beyond the Golden post-Parker years which sadly are tailing off in this century (hopefully only temporarily), and if this essential music is to prevail in our day and beyond, we must have such jazz prodigies as Dechter. Phil Hamilton is a wonderful drummer and Clayton and Handelman would sound great in any era. A vital group!
great song and you guys swing like hell. Thank you! I´m transcribing my 2nd Graham solo (as a pianoplayer). I like your lines, phrasing.... hope you come to Germany
When I was listening to this pianist all I could hear was "The meek shall inherit". He seems to be holding back some POWOW, that comes out ONLY at the required moment. Its not a daily thing,
I can hear sooooo many influences, however I am partial to Jimmy Ponder. His chord soloing is so pianistic, Wes is there too. His Rhythm Section is swinging [KUDOS] which allows Graham to 'pick up the pieces'. He is a phenom!!!!
For those of you who DONT feel qualified to express an opinion of this performance, just watch the faces of the players for their appreciation of what is played by the wonderful guitarist. He proves that, even though he has great ability,it is his statements and choice of notes that makes him great. The whole group swings mightily, even at this leasurely tempo. An exercise in good taste! And I am pretty sure that I would play better if I were with these guys!
Don't everybody clap at once. Great performance to say the least, and was probably an American audience. It probably didn't meet with their approval because the guitar player didn't "shred" any riffs like a heavy metal guitar player does. Give me a break. Those of us on the net who know talent think you deserve a better audience. You've got the touch. Keep up the good work. Don't let a group like these deadheads in the audience get you down.
I think it was a studio audience, probably only 10 people. I think they were recording too -- maybe a bit intimidated by being there -- or just not enough alcohol :)
Dechter doesn't take a single break in his solo! It may sound like he's playing good notes, but to me it's a sign of maturity when you don't play constantly through the entire tune.
It is impossible to listen to this without tapping my foot, nodding my head and smiling non-stop.
Jeff Hamilton is a master and inspiration.
How can Jeff's high-hat sound like it's dragging, but also sound like it's right on time?! A master of swing.
i love that in the wide camera shot you can see all 4 of the heels swinging exactly together
Yes! It just doesn't get any better than this.😎
Really great swing and great tone. Wow.
The great ones play in such a relaxed mode - Jeff makes it look so effortless - doesn’t get any better than this - spot on.
swings so hard. yeahhhh!!!!
Jeff Hamilton…WOW. Just like playing with Carol Lou in Richmond, Indiana.
He's quickly become one of my favorite players. Impeccable taste, and this band is top-notch. This is the definition of swing.
This is one of the most amazing guitar solos I've ever heard.
John Clayton John Clayton JOHN CLAYTON !
..totally makes this happen. He has such a perfect sound, and the love just shines from his face.
Jeff Hamilton man!!!! Very nice preformence... beautiful playing by all!

Mature audiences clap politely, and generally at the end. No shortage of jazz aficionados in the US. Jazz was born here.

I agree. His lines are great though. Somebody else said that when I mentioned his name. Finding the space...making the space...leaving the space
This tempo is tricky to swing on without sounding ploddy
Rock may not ever speak for us.
С такими ребятами и я бы с удовольствием поиграл Мурку по джазовому
swinging.
This is the video you should play for someone who says, “I’m really not into jazz. I just don’t get it.” These cats cook!
Oh yeah, right in the pocket.
Great! Polished production and performance by all. Guitarist is leader ...should be louder in the mix...!
1:24
Yes! I lost count of how many times he hit the drums and cymbals in that split second. Blaaaaaam!
Definitive.
8:10
Yeah! Caps off a great drum break
Don't you just hate it when the double bass player takes a solo, I mean, who do these people think they are ????
Having said that, tongue-in-cheek, this very fine quartet do great credit to Duke Ellington's classic tune.....
Just kinda Plain Jane for me!!!!!
