    Doc, tiny correction: there is TWO De Marinies who designed for Alita. Fausto De Martini designed a bunch of stuff mainly for the movie, and Joao De Martini did motorballers for DVD extras.
    Here's more about it and more motorballers! www.artstation.com/artwork/gJ4EyK

      I hope so too, but something is better than nothing. So if no movie sequels, then please at least a tv series to sum up the rest of the story... Maybe not like a tv series where it's expected to continue forever, but more like a mini-series with a planned ending would be much better in my opinion.

      Agreed. Something me and my girl love to do is go to a movie theatre and have dinner together as a outing. Alita was one of those we thoroughly enjoyed a lot. Bought the Blu-Ray already. Love it. Joker and Alita might be the best films of 2019 in my personal opinion. Bottom line is, I am scared streaming will stop the movie theatrical releases, since I go there a lot. Really do not want to see the classic movie tradition die out like this.

    2nd Update: More really good news: Good news! The Numbers just updated Alita bluray sales. They adjusted upward by 55,289 units the 4 prior weeks. Blu ray sale for 8/25 were 24,390, down just 3%. That's much better. Here is a link: www.the-numbers.com/movie/Alita-Battle-Angel-(2019)#tab=video-sales Since The Numbers revised the Alita bluray sales in units, Alita has been ahead of Ready Player One in units every week, as follows: 109%; 108.8%; 105.9%; 104.8%; and 105.6%. There is a good chance BluRays will hit 800,000 prior to Thanksgiving.
    Update: On 9/13, Rosa Salazar did an Instagram post thanking fans for all the postcards she received for Alita Appreciation Day.
    Rosa's 9/9 Instagram post is significant in that it suggests that she has been watching Doc Ido's videos (and other Alita videos) and that she reads posts to her Instagram account. And Rosa does respond to those posts. That being the case, members of the Alita Army could do posts to her Instagram account asking her for an update on the status of an Alita sequel.
    Keep in mind that tomorrow, 9/13, Rosa's new series UNDONE becomes available for purchase on Amazon Prime, so she will probably be doing interviews with the media to promote UNDONE, and she may mention Alita.
    Here's a prediction. The Numbers may update the 8/25 Alita Blu Ray sales this Saturday morning (like they did last week), and the numbers of Blu Rays sold will probably be up to about 30,000 units. MediaPlayNews reported for that week that Alita went from 6th play to 7th place in Blu Ray sales, and the prior week's 24,597 units was very low due to Avengers Endgame. It is likely that people simply postponed buying Alita Blu Rays for a week or two, and some of those sales will occur in the 8/25 numbers. And the following week 9/1 is the Labor Day weekend. Last year Ready Player One went up 61% on that weekend from the prior weekend, because Labor Day weekend is a big shopping weekend. So expect Alita Blu Ray sales to get a similar big increase - perhaps to 40,000 units. Note that Labor Day weekend in 2018 saw 2 other movies with big increases - Rampage went up 37% and Predator 3 went up 38%. So Alita going up 33% - from 30,000 to 40,000 - seems quite possible. MediaPlayNews reported that for the week 9/1, Alita Blu Ray sales went from 7th place to 9th place, so you would expect a 10% drop, but increased Labor Day sales and postponed sales should counteract that.
    Rosa's new series UNDONE is getting rave reviews, and people who stream that series are likely to become Rosa Salazar fans and buy the Alita Blu Rays. And if Terminator Dark Fate becomes a big box office hit, which seems likely, people who see that movie are also more likely to then go out and buy Alita on Blu Ray. The timing of Terminator Dark Fate is great, since it should boost Alita Black Friday weekend sales.
    Also interesting is what you don't hear. You don't see articles saying that there is no chance for an Alita sequel, or that Alita: Battle Angel was a flop.
    This has been a memorable week. When Rosa Salazar did her 9/9 Instagram post, I immediately felt that the chances of an Alita sequel shot up by at least 10%. Rosa is not an insignificant actress, and Alita: Battle Angel is not an insignificant movie.

      Also, Here are some interesting terms mentioned on various Alita posts on reddit:
      Waifu is a term for a fictional character, usually in anime or related media, that someone has great, and sometimes romantic, affection for.
      Mash note - noun - a letter that expresses infatuation with or gushing appreciation of someone.
      Sometimes referred to as "Script Immunity" or a "Character Shield", Plot Armor is when a main character's life and health are safeguarded by the fact that he's the one person who can't be removed from the story.

      @@charlesschmidt804 The "Waifu" term is interesting to me. I'm a movie fan, have been for a very, very long time. Like clockwork, I see a movie once week. I try to catch new releases in the theater if something decent is playing. If not, I'll catch an old movie. Now, I rarely see movies more than once. So, after going to Alita a fifth time or so, I asked myself "Why?" I think that I figured it out by my 10th Alita visit to the theater. Hey Doc, China has 900% of the number of theaters than it did back then, but not only more theaters, but more screens per theater, that is an increase of 1200%... So the fact that Avatar made that much money back then and it took so much work for Endgame to beat it now that one of the biggest markets for films have 12x the number of screens really says a lot about Avatar's accomplishments.

    • @deadstar44
      @deadstar44 5 лет назад +5

      Yeah, without China's ginormous theater expansion, Endgame wouldn't even be touching Avatar 10 years after! Also China is the biggest 3D market today, the majority of tickets sold for Endgame were 3D over there (around 87%). Approximatively 1 billion dollars worth of tickets worldwide were actually 3D and 4DX accounted for 37M dollars worldwide. 4DX didn't exist in 2009. Imagine Avatar in 4DX with current chinese theater market...

    • @TalkingHands308
      @TalkingHands308 5 лет назад +6

      @@deadstar44 Yep, which is why I found it hilarious people who were shrugging off Avatar. And I'm not saying this because I'm a fanboy. Actually I enjoyed Endgame more than Avatar. I'm a huge Marvel nerd and have seen all of them, buy all of their movies (steelbooks mostly), and saw Endgame 4 times in theaters. But facts are facts, Avatar accomplished what it did when it was harder to do so. Endgame has immense inflation and a much larger market for movies in its favor. To shrug off Avatar's accomplishment is simply stupid, but the Marvel fanboys do this every chance they get and it's kind of hilarious how clueless they are...

      @@dakdude4 This is the one argument the Marvel fanboys love to make but unfortunately it actually speaks WELL of Avatar, not ill of it. Do you honestly think that theaters would keep running a movie if it's not profitable? Movies staying in theaters longer is actually a sign that they are selling well in ticket sales. Or do you actually think theaters would keep running a movie in empty auditoriums? Yes it was in theaters longer, the reason is because people kept coming to watch it... So thanks for supporting my argument.

    • @deadstar44
      @deadstar44 5 лет назад +1

      @@dakdude4 Because Avatar had a much better WOM and legs than Endgame. Avatar barely dropped from weekends to weekends, from weeks to weeks, even jumped at times which is totally abnormal and showed that audience was still coming in droves regularly that it barely suffered the usual +50% drops that CBM experience once the hype is over past the first two weeks.
      Endgame was released simultaneously on the most staggering amount of screens worldwide the same weekend by Disney. It was pure hype forcing people to watch it on opening weekend on a massive scale giving it the biggest headstart in theater exhibition all at once because they knew that it would drop quickly once the initial rush is over. Legs were average once that big weekend cleared up. The total antithesis of Avatar which started moderately and kept a steady pace for 3 months straight that it would barely drop. Its legs are exceptional as a result.

    You make a good point about the city already being built. Not only would the sequel be far cheaper (although still expensive), but an investment of that magnitude would be too much of a waste in the future. I also think that even though we'll get an Alita sequel, it may take some time. The VFX team that made it a reality is working on Avatar 2, and the Disney-Fix merger may have postponed some plans in the funding. Cameron has gotten funding elsewhere, but it's not always so simple. It'll work out, things just need to be discussed and arranged first.

    Part of the reason Cameron is somewhat unpopular within Holloywood. Is that he's never been satisfied with the status quo. That's a good thing and I wish more directors were like him.
    Cameron was one of the few who was heavily critical of how 3D was being used post Avatar. Saying that if Studios continue to post-process films.
    It would ruin the technology chances in the future. Of course Cameron was right here. As we only had just a handful of films.
    Which were filmed in true 3D using a 3D camera and not post-process. Battle Angel in itself was also a significant advancement.
    Along which was also filmed in 4DX. One of the very few movies that has taken advantage of the new emerging technology.
    But probably one of the most important points we should remember here. Is that Cameron does not need Disney's permission to do a sequel.
    Disney does not own the rights to Battle Angel Cameron does. If he so chooses he could just pick a different studio. Which at this stage might not be such a bad idea really, just saying. :)

      James Cameron's got the heart of a rebel. I mean that as a compliment. He doesn't let the idiots in Hollywood control him and will fight them tooth and nail to get his movies done the way HE envisions them. Judging by Jon Landau's quiet but steadfast loyalty to him over the last 20 years, I think he has a similar spirit.

      bassplayer807 not sure, but I speculate the designs for Dark Fate lean towards keyframing, which WETA just doesn’t like doing as much as particles, textures, atmospherics and capture...

    • @mememaster147
      @mememaster147 5 лет назад

      WETA didn't do the Moon scenes, they were done by Rising Sun Pictures- www.awn.com/news/rising-sun-pictures-springs-action-foxs-alita-battle-angel If they did it the same way as Motorball, WETA will have supplied a pre-rendered Alita for them to use. Simulating the Moon is relatively simple as there's no atmosphere so no convection, Brownian motion or anything like that to complicate things, it's just pure particle interactions. Puffs of gas from explosions and muzzle blasts would make it more difficult, though.

    Cameron should worry less about Avatar and more about Terminator the way things are looking there.
    Also the first person they should've brought on board for Alita to design stuff should have been Yukito Kishiro, the original creator. I primarily want to see his designs put to screen, and other people working to bring them from paper into the CG world.

    3:17 I don't think that most blurays sales have already happened in France. For example, Avengers infinity war sold as much blurays on Amazon.fr in 2018 than in 2019.
    So, since the Alita steelbook is sold out on Amazon France since a week, it could become a problem. The minimum price for an Alita steelbook on Amazon France is now 55 dollars per unit. Do you know if Amazon France are going to replenish their Alita steelbook stock? Could you please write an email to them to talk about this problem? Because it is important to have a sequel.

However, this UK website reports that Alita: Battle Angel is currently #7 in its 7th week: www.officialcharts.com/charts/blu-ray-chart/ Alita: Battle Angel hit #1 in the UK it its first week. Reports from France and Germany show similar sales - which were good. The overall impression is that Alita: Battle Angel is selling very well in Europe and the rest of the world.

    Hi Doc - another great update - thanks! It's going well and I think there IS significance in Jon Landau posting 'Alita-themed' content - maybe a little hint that things really are progressing behind the scenes for the Alita sequel! I'm sure James Cameron will return to Alita is soon as he can untangle himself from the Avatar sequels. I agree with him that we should be optimistic that people will still want to see films on the BIG screen - no matter how good streaming/blu ray is - it does not compare to watching movies in the theatre!
    I saw Alita in 3D on the biggest IMAX screen in the UK - WOW, nothing compares to that viewing! On to the sequel !!

  • @TheCasualFanatic
    @TheCasualFanatic 5 лет назад +1

    Cameron paved the way for what streaming became... His Beauty and the Beast and Dark Angel television series were pushing firsts on several levels! Had he not made the Linda Hamilton show for paid television or pushed the top dollar mark on cable productions, would we really have HBO series that are must-see-TV ventures? Avatar pushed the boundaries for films like Endgame to be successful... Making the cinematic experience worth pursuing, creating a lure that can't wait for more inferior avenues of distribution! The real question would be how he could continue that trend with a sequel that is taking nearly forever to make, on a diminishing concept with a cinematic 3D experience? What will be his draw, now that people had picked his first one apart and discovered that it was basically Ferngully with aliens! Or, should he go back to television or a streaming platform to reinvent himself once again?

    If the pattern of release Cameron laid out right after Avatar holds, it will be Avatar 2 first, and then Alita 2 about 12 months later. So it is at least a year out, maybe more like two or three. Not sure why Cameron, Mendelson and other industry buffs think that streaming is gonna kill the cinema experience. They do realize that Netflix and its ilk were created as an alternative to Cable tv right? Streaming and the cinema experience are complimentary in nature not adversarial. Hell studies are beginning to trickle out that people who stream a lot actual go to the cinema MORE than people who don't. John Campea of all people just covered this recently.
    Blaming everything on streaming is a lot easier than Hollywood actually acknowledging the very real problems with its business model such as ridiculously high ticket prices, #diversity/inclusion pandering to cover up crappy storytelling, out of control spending, an unwillingness to take risks, overeliance on superhero movies, cgi overload, creators attacking fans, and so on and so forth.
    Bottomline is people still want to go to the movies but Hollywood is doing everything possible to prevent them/alienate them from doing so.

      I think James Cameron knows that idiots in Hollywood are pushing audiences away. He's not doing it because he's not stupid, but he seems to be trying to warn the rest of Hollywood as politely as possible that they're destroying themselves from the inside. Maybe some good old James Cameron fire would smack some sense into them. Or maybe it would destroy his career because "white man bad" and all that shit.

    • @tomnorton4277
      @tomnorton4277 5 лет назад +1

      @@tonysantiago255 It's a shame that Endgame sucked because Infinity War actually will hold up. Thanos was the greatest cinematic villain since Heath Ledger's Joker. Why wasn't Josh Brolin even nominated for an Oscar when Infinity War came out? Apart from Rosa Salazar, he's the only person since Heath Ledger died who 100% deserved it because as amazing as Gary Oldman was in The Darkest Hour, nobody's going to care about that movie in 10 years time. Anyway, ranting about how biased the Oscars are these days aside, the movie built around Thanos was well crafted too.
      I believe that the reason Endgame was such a mess is that the Russo Brothers decided "fuck this. We're done" when they realised Kevin Feige had decided to go woke. It's not that they COULDN'T have made Endgame good, it's that they simply didn't care enough to try. In some ways, that might actually be even more tragic because Kevin Feige's stupidity and cowardice in the face of the SJWs and feminazis caused two passionate filmmakers to just phone it in.
      However, at least Infinity War had a satisfactory, albeit dark, conclusion that tied everything up, except Doctor Strange's plan but all it takes to explain that is a little creativity. My explanation is that when Strange told Tony "It was the only way" he wasn't offering hope but was instead saying "Thor blew our only chance because he didn't go for the head". Anyway, people can treat Infinity War as the true end of the MCU. Just cut out Craptain Marvel's teaser and the "Thanos will return" line at the end and boom, you have a complete story. It's actually a bit fucked up that Infinity War will be remembered as the Russo Brothers' magnum opus since it ends in the villain winning but to be fair, The Dark Knight was the same even though the Joker's victory wasn't as literal as Thanos'.

    Imo I still believe that Cameron has to move the Alita franchise,movies,universe etc to another company and let greedy Disney especially and Fox stay away from this. I know it is very difficult to do such a thing but with the fame he has and the fact that Kenshiro gave the rights to Cameron exclusively, he decides what to do with the movies and how so he could possibly take the rights to another movie studio that will (probably) treat the franchise better. Probably. Like Universal ( which could also mean an Alita attraction in the Universal Studios Park)or Paramount. But since the second movie is going to be made under Fox and Disney distribution I say Fox to take full handle of this movie and not Disney.

      @@wideeyedoldguy5638 Robert Rodriguez might be the most versatile filmmaker alive. Put that guy behind a camera and he can do everything. Writing, directing, sound, CGI, practical effects, camera work, you name it. I think James Cameron can technically do all that too - in the CGI department he can do it better - but he doesn't need to because people practically trip over each other for a chance to work with the most powerful filmmaker in Hollywood. After they've worked with him, some people like Kate Winslet don't want to do so again - he's kind of like Stanley Kubrick in that way, as well as in his attention to detail - but people who are made of sterner stuff like Rosa Salazar, Sigourney Weaver and Michelle Rodriguez jump at a chance to collaborate with him again. In Michelle's case, it seems like she did her cameo as Gelda more as a favour to James than anything else because she was uncredited.
      The fact that James was willing to hand Alita over to Robert at all shows that he trusts him completely. He's been guarding Alita like an overprotective parent for 21 years so he wouldn't give the reins to another director unless he knew, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that said director would honour his vision. That's not just a relationship between colleagues. That's real friendship.
