Is it possible to get good image stability by holding it only with the hand? I worry because a powerful zoom also magnifies hand shaking more rather than 8x or 10x

The best way for image stability is with a tripod. Unfortunately, you are right. No one's hands are perfect. I never check to see if the expensive ones have image stability.
