you can zoom in with your phone while attached to the monocular so you get double zoom. i do that with microscopes at work, comes in handy. your phone will autofocus to help cancel out blurriness.
I take pictures with my phone using the microscope as well... it can be a tad tricky but it's possible to do... so yeah thinking if you zoomed your phone and then used the gadget... it would get a much closer image. I'm assuming.
I always found using the phone with a (macro/micro/stereo)scope was difficult, so I bought an HD USB digital camera that slides into the eyepiece tube. Those slip on macro lenses for phones camera be very helpful in general though.
Nothing to do with the product, but something I was reminded of with all the ducks and geese... The cemetery where my Dad and grandparents are buried has a big, man made lake in the middle with lots of turtles, fish, ducks, geese, and a few swans. I was taking pics of them from my car one day and was starting to drive off, when a pair of geese started chasing the car. I stopped, they stopped. I moved, they moved. I took their picture and they went on about their business. They wouldn't let me leave without taking their picture too 😄
Used to work in a photography store. We'd call these spotter scopes, altho I don't think there was anything that small. You'd be looking at around £130 to anything like £300+ and that was early 00's. They were a bit larger tho and certainly higher end.
With these things, the camera simply sees what your eyes see. Zooming the phone camera in would just simply magnify a crappy image. These are single, plastic lenses (hence so much blur and colour aberration toward the edges) and are basically toy-quality. As someone here mentioned, if someone actually want decent quality magnification, they have to spend some serious money for multi-glass lenses.
I have been using a similar monocular with my phone for pictures for the last year. It definitely looks better if you zoom in on your phone with the monocular attached. It's a great alternative to an expensive camera, just a little finicky. Though I would definitely get one with 10x zoom. Seems like the best middle ground since too much zoom reduces light.
I tend to use the magnifier along with the phone's zoom to get close ups. I use a monoscope from Sharper Imagine which I purchased over 10 years ago for both viewing and taking pictures.
If you want to take pictures, use a real camera with a zoom lens. If you want to use your own eyes, use a scope. And no, the phone zoomed pictures were quite clearly worse quality, lol. Almost all of the finer details got lost. But I do agree it'd be pretty stupid to take a picture through a scope, especially without some form of support. That's what real cameras are for, though.
I think the phone comparison is only useful in terms of the power of magnification. I mean, there is still a difference between seeing it with your eyes, vs seeing it through a picture / video on your phone. But honestly, I'd still bring a 2 lens telescope if I really want to look at something.
Thank you very much for the review. It’s nice to know sometimes going right out and buying a gadget is not the best idea, because we may already carry a gadget that does what we need. Also, I’m very happy you’re a fellow Bugler! #hellobuglers
If the Bionic Zoom claims to be a "zoom", it should zoom. If the telescope has a fixed focal length, that means it doesn't zoom. In order to zoom, it'd have to be able to go from one focal length through to another.
Beautiful views! The birds are "twitterpated" this time of year in the Midwest, I would assume the same would be true out there as well. That's probably what they were talking about 😉
Not to mention, it was not a like for like comparison. If you're going to zoom in a certain amount on the phone then you need to zoom in that amount on the phone and use it with the external lens. But the whole point of using an external lens is so you don't have to do the terrible quality pinch zooming
@Ren that was my point. But by comparing light to like you would get a sense of how much further you could get some level of detail. At the end of the day even a crappy optical zoom like this is going to beat any phone's fake Zoom.
Normally, if a monocular advertises 8 x 50 they mean 8x magnification and a 50 mm objective lens aperture. Too often, monoculars are bending the rules when advertising their product. Correct me if I'm wrong on this: When the generic claims 80 x 100, they are making the assumption a 10x digital zoom phone is attached to their 8x monocular. The 100 most likely refers to the focal length of 100mm.
I don't know i you would (be able to) test this, but I've had a few commercials pushed on me (games on phone) about a smartwatch that allegedly could measure blood sugar levels... I don't think it works, and since the commercial suggests you can throw away the conventional test strips etc. this might be a great way to tell people NOT to buy/believe the commercial for health reasons if it indeed does not as advertised -don't remember the specific name of the product though, but I'm seeing multiple watches claiming the glucose functionality in amazon
It's not the gadgets this time, it's the fact you got that close to a Canadian goose and it didn't run or attack you! Indiana native here, geese are mean in my parts.
Thanks for the review, I enjoy your content. I was just browsing Amazon for that Monocular and notice they also offer a few that are digital for just a few dollars more at $59. I wonder if these are better than a phone, they are also night vision... hmmm. Please consider reviewing a couple of these.
That doesn’t even make any sense because anything that’s possible to be visible 50 miles away has to be damn near a mountain in the first place. Just based on horizons
You're not alone, stay strong you got this! Guided meditations help ALOT, there's loads free on RUclips for depression anxiety etc. Sleep ones aswell that help you go to sleep at night. Hope this helps 👍🏴🇬🇧
I've never gotten the idea monoculars probably because both my eyes are so different I need the binoculars. I think that your old iPhone was definitely the clearest picture.
those canada geese are so ubiquitous! i work on the water here in UK, which is about as far from vegas as u can get and we ALSO have tons of them here 😂
They're junk, don't waste your money. You can't buy good glass for $40. These might be OK for a kid's toy, but for any serious use you'll need to spend quite a bit more. For professional use you'll need to spend a LOT more. All the inexpensive Chinese optics I've ever seen have been blurry at the edges, sharp on one side but blurry on the other, filled with dust and often can't be focused sharply at all.
Feel like the Bionic company wanted to go into the spy store route but wouldn't commit to brick and mortar stores, so now they just sell their wares on tv lol
Interesting, James. If it was me, I'd just stick with the phone, even though I am somewhat of a bird watcher (minus the jets overhead). The way I look at it, when you get your next phone, it will be even better. Thanks for all that you do for us.
I bought a super zoom, from a Facebook ad. It showed, a zoom capability. What arrived had a focus like that, was otherwise crummy and cheap. After having used Zeiss or Canon optics, during my Navy Photog career, the product was vastly over represented.
I'd ignore these and go for a Celestron G2, 10 times magnification, a lot smaller, and lighter to carry, and cheaper (£24). The image quality is also higher.
Image quality of the Amazon one was clearly much better than the Bionic, but neither of them was even close to as good as my cheap pair of japanese binoculars that I got when I was a kid in the '70s.
Huh idk the bionic zoom actually looks better to me. Definitely has worse peripherals but seems like idk 30-50% more zoom better color. Could just be how it was caught on camera tho
Cheap optics. Fringing blue and/or yellow. Hard to focus. The old phone's images were way better. It pays to spend a little more to get something you will actually enjoy using.😎
I bought some binoculars that came with an accessory to attach to your phone and it was terrible to get to work. Just using the phone to see was much easier.
Thanks, James for bringing something I didn't know exists, and saving me $$$'s. I guess I should go to Amazon and just screw around their site. 🤣Love your reviews. 🤗🥰
... "HD." 😂 They missed a great BS marketing claim here - I mean, if you're going to misuse terms, may as well go for the gold and call it "over 8k" (I mean, as long as the optics aren't utter trash, it'd be, technically, an accurate claim. Actually, more accurate than calling it "HD.")
The problem with such scopes is that they use very basic lenses which create light aberrations, which, in turn, produce dim and unfocused image. Okay for very simple use, not okay if you want something more sharp
Not sure why anyone would want either. 8x and 10x are the most common of binoculars and can easily be found starting on the cheap. I'd rather get the cheap binoculars then either of these.
not for anyone concerning serious work consider a lens attachment to your camera or phone giving very goodresults on the cheap for serious video/photos good lens do not come cheap especially if your seeking professional work.
That goose at the very end was sure telling you off.....LOL

A couple of these, and some zip ties,....instant binoculars.
Lol
😂😂💀
With a free bonus of pain and suffering. The image from these cheap devices with plastic lenses is going to induce a headache within seconds probably.
I just imagine making some sort of budget binocular headset that looks ridiculous lol.
Frickin macgyver over here
I have either the same or very similar monocular from Amazon. For the price, it is a pretty good scope for nature walks and camping.
Used to work in a photography store. We'd call these spotter scopes, altho I don't think there was anything that small. You'd be looking at around £130 to anything like £300+ and that was early 00's. They were a bit larger tho and certainly higher end.
I'm curious how it would look to use one of these AND zoom on the phone a little. I'd guess it would make a noticeable difference.
I was curious about the same thing

As someone here mentioned, if someone actually want decent quality magnification, they have to spend some serious money for multi-glass lenses.
The phone mount seems kinda iffy, but I'd take optical zoom over digital zoom any day.
Thank you for the incredible bird clips at the end :)

How can you attach it?
What a beautiful place, its like youre guaranteed to see a bird every few feet.
Im assuming the amazon one saying 80x must be a typo. What im guessing is someone was told it was 8.0x and they didnt add the period.
Those definitely looked like something else on first scroll-through, I thought I was on a VERY different site for a second. 😅
I have a pair of Zeiss binos.... they are awesome!
When you tried the good stuff, cheap crap like those 2 are just a waste of money.

Try zooming with the phone AND add that scope!

I'd say both lenses did better than the iPhone. There was a ton of pixelization and artifacts on the iPhone pictures.
Not to mention, it was not a like for like comparison. If you're going to zoom in a certain amount on the phone then you need to zoom in that amount on the phone and use it with the external lens. @@falxonPSN the issue is the i phone doesn't actually zoom the lens it just stretches out the picture making it more pixelated the more you go in.

I feel like with every video you keep looking younger. I really like the full beard look. Great video as always! Can't wait to watch the next one!
Right next to an airport seems like the worst spot to have a bird preserve
The land is probably cheap there because no one wants to live near an airport.

Those transitions were PHENOMENAL 🤩
The phone quality is just as good without a separate device like these.

Thanks for saving me some dollars. Bionic Zoom is at Ollie's for $7.99, so I figured I watch your review first.

What a great video. James was also the prettiest thing filmed.

We sell those in my store - we've been laughing about the "8x" magnification. We're wondering if it can help find competent management.
Haha this is the first time I've seen you review a product I've reviewed on Amazon.

As a photographer my advice is to either spend a bit more for quality glass or really, really lower your expectations.
Make sure you don't adjust the part for glasses on the $30 one the gray one because that will make it blurry
