On "My Car Story" we're at the Carlisle Events in Carlisle PA on 7-15-22.
We're looking at a 1966 Dodge Charger in Red Paint. The car comes with the 426 CI “Hemi” V8 engine, and 4 Speed manual transmission.
The car's Owner is Gary Leslie. Gary’s had this car since 2021. He shares one of his first cars was a 1966 Dodge Charger however it did not have a 426 Hemi. So he drove a 426 Hemi car, and needed that motor for his car. He purchased a car with that motor, and took it out to put in his 1966 Dodge Charger, but ended up crashing the car. He always wanted that car, and after years of searching, he finally found the right one for him and here it is.

Mr. Leslie's Charger looks & sounds fantastic from every angle. I don't think it's a coincidence Dodge spent so much time & effort styling the tail end of this car, because with that Hemi, that's the only view most other drivers will get to see. Thanks, Lou!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, "I don't think it's a coincidence Dodge spent so much time & effort styling the tail end of this car, because with that Hemi, that's the only view most other drivers will get to see" NICE! You're welcome, Lou
Good NASCAR race car also 👌. Thanks 😊 🙏
Thank you Mr Gun Fighter. I like your taste also.
@@bryantcurtis2665 When I totalled my 66 back in 68, I sold the wrecked body to a USAC racer in Indiana….AFTER I removed ALL the Hemi parts.
@@brendaleslie4117 You're welcome! Great minds....
A 1966 Dodge Charger was always destined to be a classic car in future.
Nice !
When a young boy, our neighbor owned a green Charger. It was such a cool
automobile. One of MOPAR’s best designs and build.
Hi Rob, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your neighbors car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
This first generation was forgotten because of the second one, and this one's direct resemblance to the Coronet. But these are great--I was in sixth grade and a friend of mine's parents had a yellow one of these with a black vinyl interior, a 383cid. I loved those back bucket seats! Great a/c, too.
Hi LoveIsAll, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Friends Parents car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
One of the coolest cars ever.
High praise :-)
Lou , you should have shown the full length console and the split bucket seats.... one of the Chargers most unique features. And too bad the dash lights couldn't be seen... another impressive feature , unique to the Charger.
I just sold my white 66 383 Charger back to the guy I bought it from 15 years ago.
It was a real head turner , with folks trying to figure out what they were seeing .... always attracted a crowd.
Hi Gods own Drunk, The dash lights would have been a good idea, however lighting wasn't helping me share that. Happy to read you had a cool 1966 too, Lou
I have always loved the look of the early Charger. The hemi, 4 speed makes it even better. Great car, no wonder the owner always wanted one. Thanks Lou!
Hi Greg, Happy to read "I have always loved the look of the early Charger. The hemi, 4 speed makes it even better." :-) You're welcome, Lou
That was an impressive car.

I don't like Dodges too often but this model of Charger is a fine looking car, elegant inside and out as well.
Hi Pablo, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this one :-) Lou
@@loucostabile Yeah, what a car!!! Thanks for the video.
Worth every penny in extra gas charges. Historically,The 66-67 Chargers were unappreciated because of the 68-71 big brother but recently they have been comming into their own. Thx again Lou!

Hi Terri, Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) You're welcome, Lou
The 1966 Dodge Charger has to be my favorite year! I love the body lines, and the overall style! Equipped with the 426 Hemi with the 4-speed manual transmission, that made this Mopar perfect! This car is a true gem! I love the red color. That really sets it off with its black interior! That's one mighty fine Mopar!
Hi Michael, Happy to read "The 1966 Dodge Charger has to be my favorite year!" :-) NICE! Lou
That's always been one of my favorite Chryslers. They look very similar to the AMC Marlins.
My thoughts exactly. The Marlin was out first, by a couple years. But still my favorite Charger.
Happy to read "That's always been one of my favorite Chryslers" :-)
Truth. I never would have noticed.
Exactly. I was trying to remember the name of that AMC model.
They were definitely "cousins"!
The Charger was a bit more powerful!! Glad I wasn't the only one who thought that !😉
What a nice Charger! Very impressive.
This generation deserves more love than they get. Just classic!
Thanks for sharing this beauty with us Lou and Gary.
Hi Jeff, Happy to read you enjoy this Charger :-) My pleasure sharing with you. You're welcome, Lou
Beautiful 66. I have personally been around two of these in my life. First one was owned by the older gentleman that had a shop up the alley from our house when I was around 12 or 13. His was white with a dark maroon interior with the 318/auto. It was all original except for one tire. I had the pleasure of helping him wash it may times. He didn't drive it much as the old tires really weren't safe, but it was such a complete and original car. The second was at a used car lot I worked at in my early twenties. It was black on black with the 383/auto. Far from original and very molested. Definite 70s/80s type hot rod. Keystone Classics and fat tires on the back, skinnies on the front. I had the pleasure of driving that one. Honestly it scared the crap out of me as I was used to the 305 in my Malibu..hehe. I can still smell the varnished fuel and old musty interior of that one. It was fun. Thanks for sharing as always Lou. Every now and then your videos take me back or trigger great memories from my younger days. Take care.
Hi Russell, Happy to read this car brings back memories of the cars you remember :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
When I was a child 8 built many plastic models and one of my absolute favorites was of a 66 charger.
Still one of the best looking mopars ever created
Hi Hal 1000, Happy to read "Still one of the best looking mopars ever created" :-) Glad to read this one brings back memories of the model you made too, Lou
I built lots of car models too. There was a store near our house that sold the kits and it used to hold contests for the best model and presentation. You could build a little stand or scene to show off your model. I remember making one of these early chargers. It had a very interesting interior. When so many cars just had front and rear bench seats, this one had 4 bucket seats and a console!
Morning lou, that red charger brings me good memories, first time I saw one was in 1966 I said wow the nose ,the roof rear end, then the inside it is a cool looking car, I grew up with the sixties, and seventies cars, knew them all, my favorite years, lou keep showing these beautiful cars. Take care Lou, God bless
Morning Robert, Happy to read this car brings back good memories of the 1st time you saw the 1966 Charger :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing the blessing which is received. God bless you too, Lou
We appreciate the time you spend putting these productions together which in itself is not easy. Anyone giving this a thumbs down definitely has no business even visiting a muscle car channel let alone getting a glimpse of America's greatest cars of all time.
Hi The Star Family, Happy to read you appreciate the effort :-) My pleasure sharing with you. You're welcome, Lou
OMG!!!😱😱😱 This is the Dodge Charger of the first generation!🤩🤩🤩 Mopar or no car...💪💪💪

Dual quads, dual points, & solid lifters. You KNOW what these cars were intended for!
:-)
Great car! In my opinion, this was one, if not the best, of Chrysler products of the 1960s. The styling, inside and out, was sublime, and the attention to detail was wonderful. The back seat was very cool with the buckets seats/console, the fold-down trunk partition, and even the interior lights on the C-pillars they way the were the termination of the chrome trim around the windows. Lou (and crew) as always, thank you for showing these awesome cars to us 👍
Hi Mike YQR, "this was one, if not the best, of Chrysler products of the 1960s" High praise :-) Lou
Brings back great memories. My 1st car out of high school was a 66 CHARGER 383 METAL FLAKE GOLD. Kept it until I got a 1970 340CUDA. Another great MOPAR classic.

I own a gold 66 383 Charger survivor now. Still drive her.
Great car. Great car story !!
I've had many Chargers but never a Hemi. In the early 90s I owned a 67 383 4 speed for a few years as a daily driver.. very unique cars !!
(The dash lights are incredible at night)
Hi Jeff, Happy to read you enjoy this car & story too :-) Let's see if we can get you a Hemi and get that car on the Channel soon! Lou
Always loved these early Chargers ! Great color on this body and a Hemi and a stick to boot ! Thanks for posting Lou !

What a sweet ride! I like the 66 Charger more than any of following model years. The styling is unique, especially the roof lines, front and rear of the car! Thanks Lou!
Hi David, Happy to read you enjoy this "sweet ride!" :-) You're welcome, Lou
The only year they were a true 4 seater. '66 had the full front to back center console.
Hi Lou, The back stories of the owners are just as interesting and intriguing as the cars themselves. But I have to say the 66 Charger Hemi is one unique automobile. I was expecting you to say that exhaust can put a baby to sleep after hearing it. Thank you for sharing.
Hi AllanK Quon, Happy to read you enjoy the story with this car :-) You're welcome, Lou
I'm a Ford man at heart but I love them all but this one raises the hair on my arms this is the definition of badassery what a machine when I was about 7 years old a gentleman used to take us to a Christian version of the Boy Scouts in his 66 Dodge Charger it didn't have a Hemi but I think it was a 383 or 440 it sounded really good I love that car the interior is just incredible thank you for sharing your beautiful machine with us.
Hi Iggy Fritz, Happy to read "this is the definition of badassery" :-) Lou
My friend's cousin came to visit from out of state in his '66 or '67 Charger when these cars were new. Plenty of WOW factor at that time. He was a teenager and I couldn't imagine how such a young guy could afford such an awesome car.
Dodge didn't offer a 440 in 66. Probably a 383 or 318.
@@danpals7678 you're right it was a 383 now I remember. Thanks
Lou,
Thank you for doing this video of my Charger. It sure was my pleasure working with you. And it exposed me to your websites which feature so many fantastic and unusual vehicles.😊😊
Gary,
You're welcome. It was so much FUN :-) Glad you're enjoying the RUclips Channel with me :-) Lou
That Charger is super, I would call it a SuperCharger!!! All kidding aside, that is an awesome car. The color, the body oh man it is beautiful!!! I have always thought these were somewhat overlooked but were and are very cool cars. I Love the hideaway headlights, and the rear taillights are iconic! The big round gauges, the full length console, four bucket seats and fastback design give this car a Grand Touring personality and I would imagine with that big ol Hemi, it would cruise down the interstate with a statement!!!! Mopar or No Car!!! Good one Lou!!!
Hi Hobiemarty, Happy to share this "SuperCharger!!!" with you :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
The 66 and 67 Chargers were VERY special.

Hi Paul, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
Absolutely spectacular car !
So glad that beauties like this survived as an example of fantastic automotive history!
Hi Mark, High praise :-) Lou
these are phenomenal. the 2nd gen gets all the attention, but the 1st gen are high content cars with superior detailing over the 2nd gen. the 426 sends it over the moon. in my home office, i have a framed print from an artist who took a wide photo of just the taillight and trunk badge of a black one...its just one of the outstanding features of these cars. I have no doubt the owner is 'happy'!
Hi Steve S. High praise. Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) Lou
Wonderful looking car. I did not know that the trunk wall folded down, yet I saw and knew people that had this car.

I too miss our friends. Don’t miss the 9th floor or TSA.
I love that car. I owned a 68 charger 383 4spd and it had the same exact shifter. I haven't seen a car since that has that shifter. I had dual glass packs on mine and I loved the sound when I was downshifting it would pop and crackle that made me smile. My dad gave me the car when I turned 16 and got my license. I sadly sold it cause I joined the military and Mom wouldn't let me leave it at home.

These have gotten better looking over the last 40 years or so.
Cars have an amazing way of looking better with age.
When I was a kid, on my way to my aunts house there was a house with a now knowing 66 Charger. Had a full length console, 383 4 speed, with origional hub caps. Knew him as Willy C. Supposedly bought it new in 66, guy had Buddy Holley glasses with a Beatles mop top. Was a faded Salmon type colour. barely any rust. Was sold in the mid 90s but no idea what happened to it..

I think the Charger's Gauge Cluster @13:02 used "Electroluminescent Lighting" that was similar to the earlier 1960 Chrysler's "Panelescent Lighting"...I've always like the styling of the early Chargers; I think Dodge got the proportions just right when compared with the Rambler Marlin

Este es un único y hermoso Dodge Charger 1966! Tiene diferencias muy vistosas en comparación con el modelo de 1969 que la famosa serie de TV «The Dukes of Hazzard» popularizó. ¡Me encantó ese pisotón de aceleración y potencia que vimos en el minuto 11:26! ¡Y no es para menos! Ya que hasta le sacó una buena sonrisa a su serio propietario, jaja. ¡Excelente video Lou, y saludos!

Hi George S, Time was not allowing us to "blow out the carbon!!", however I like the way you think :-) Lou

Only Lou could get a guy to beat on his car like that ;-)
Just one time for the Viewers......
Wishing now that I had hit 2nd gear😊😊😊
I don't consider that beating on the car at all. Just stretchin' her legs a little bit! It was built and warranteed with expectations far exceeding that little breathing demonstration. I can't blame Gary for being gentle with the old girl, though.
@@mickangio16 Since this video I have gotten a little more comfortable with “stretchin’ her legs”. But really, that was the 1st time it had been over 3500 RPM in any gear. She is very docile to drive in traffic. From 4-6000 she is all 😊😊😊😊😊
Goodday Lou,
Correct me if I am wrong the 66 Charger was the first of the muscle cars with the fastback roof line.
You can see where Ford incorporated design features of the 66 Charger into the 68 Torino & Mercury Cyclone.
There is a exactly 66 Hemi, 4 speed red in colour here in Melbourne that I see at the Chrysler Show.
Absolute draw car at the show.
Need to let that Elephant Scream occasionally.

Hi James, Happy to share this "Sweet Red 66 Chariot" with you :-) Lou
C'mon, James. Do you think that's all a Hemi Charger's got? Would have LIKED to hear it sing! Can't blame him for babying such a fine, rare, and valuable machine, though. Hopefully it will be around for many, many years to come.

I always liked the 66-67 Charger's and AMC Marlins, they've got the fast back too, actually I think I was told that Marlin's had it first but it doesn't matter I like them both!
Hi Doug, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car, and the Marlin too :-) Like this one,, Lou ruclips.net/video/e6lhovDV5y0/видео.html
The Marlins rear wheel wells and front and rear panels made the car look more like grandma's car than a performance car. We never really liked most of the AMC cars back then but I appreciate them now.

Such a miserable character for owning the best sounding car ive ever heard on this channel. I had a 66 black vinyl over cream paint ,same black buckets interior, 318 auto on the floor that went pretty good , instantly brought back wonderful memories.
Hi Thomas, Glad to read you had a cool car too, and happy to read this one brings memories of your car, Lou
Thomas, sorry you think I am "such a miserable character". Look me up at Carlisle next year. Then you can make a more educated assessment.🙂 If you are a MoPar guy I will buy you a beer. Might do it even if you aren't Mopar guy.🙂
@@garyleslie4813 not a personal attack Gary, but you had the serious "Stone Face" going 9/ 10s of the video until you punched it, and those secondary carbs kicked in, and the unmistakable growl of a 426 Hemi. Your smile made me believe a twin brother replaced you behind the classically thin Charger Steering wheel. I said you had the toughest sounding ridecon Lous channel ever, remember, I had a 66 with the stock 318 4bbl ( with the iconic upside down inserted "blue ignition key". The Speedometer went to to 150, I could do hole shots without trying. And as hapoybas my 66 Charger made me. I wouldve parked it if you had pulled up one night to race ,and left my underpowered Dodge in the dust!!
@@thomasomalley7745 Do you come to Carlisle? If so, look me up.
Remember, my Charger back in the 60s originally was a 383. Back then, as Hellcats are today, Hemis didn't last long parked in public. Even were stolen from the dealerships, as is Hellcats today. Anyway, I left the 383 emblems on the side. Painted the engine 383 turquoises instead of Hemi orange. I had a lot of fun!😊
Love the first gen Chargers! I think they look best with a wider set of Magnum 500 5 spoke wheels and a larger diameter and width tire combination. The stock wheels and tires are tucked pretty far into the wheel wells and it makes the car look like it is a bit top heavy. Beautiful car that doesn't get enough attention.
Hi Steve, Happy to read "Love the first gen Chargers!" :-)
Magnums DO look great on these cars but I don't think they were available until '67. I also like these hucaps, though. I had a '68 Polara 500 that I wanted to put 15" wheels on it with this style hubcaps but the hubcaps were only available in 14". In the end I wound up putting Magnum wheels (14×6 chrome type) with tall tires on it and it looked real good. To get a bigger 15×7 Magnum wheel you had to find some Ford wheels. Now you can buy aftermarket Magnums in many sizes but I don't think any of them would be correct for a 66.
@@mickangio16 Yes, these stock rims are fairly narrow at 5.5". l would like to get a little wider, but stay the original 14" rims.
