13 years ago i came to bmw dealership to get a restyling E60 530i to replace my 1 year old Lexus GS430 and just in front of me one guy refused buying 550i that he had payed and was waiting 3 months since he configured it and due to financial issues refused to buy. I got interested and once i saw it and drove it i felt in love. While the salesman was preparing papers i got another offer, to add 5k dollars and get M5 with full options (also refused car, we had financial crisis in 2008-09) I think i spent less time choosing my wife 😃 Finally i decided to pick 550i and what a smart decision i made! A lovely sporty monster yet comfy with a special unique engine sound. Fast and punchy yet not jerky! Never thought i would love it more than M5. 5 series with M suspension and V8 engine is my favorite set up since then. M5 has competitors like amg or rs but 550 has a special magic and has no competition! Ive driven merc E500, Audi S6 but... 550i felt most alive and elastic if u will. Since then, i had F10 550 and now... now X5 50i, became older but still love that set up 😃 Sorry for my english, im just an idiot from Russia! 😃 Greate review as always Max! Take care!
For those wondering even at this stage the M550i is tuned just enough to pass the inspections here in the US. With very basic modifications and a semi-aggressive tune the numbers are already hitting 650WHP and 10 second quarter mile. It also skates under the radar when it comes to the Police looking out for obnoxious burble tuned BMWs.
The reason why the old M550i is damn fast, not locked so 300km/h is possible and the car really still pulls after 200km/h. S6 has similar price and similar PS in number, put after about 220km/h the real pull ends. Still I am conflicted about both, because I think the S6 would be the more reliable daily driver in comparison to the BMW.

But, that diesel does still move like a petrol, and they know most people buying a brand new S6 from the showroom will most likely be a middle aged business man, and it would be more practical for them to have diesel, for more mileage and fuel consumption. (Even though the A6 would've been a better choice for that) but still, I understand Audi's idea. 700nm torque will still make you move of the line as fast as lightning...nothing beating a petrol engine sound though. Lets hope the RS stay petrol...
Excellent review. I have a fully loaded 2020 M550i xDrive and, on more than one occasion, I’ve had someone tell me I might “graduate” to an M5 next. I can afford an M5; I don’t want one. I prefer the balance of luxury and performance. You’re the first reviewer I’ve encountered who seems to get it.
Fully agree with you this 550i appeals to certain buyers like me who prefer not to announce what we are driving but still have the performance reserve when we want to use it. Love the Gunmetal Metallic finish but would definitely spec the interior differently. I also love the exhaust note which is just right, in my opinion for a performance sedan. Thanks for a great review of a fantastic car.
Had it for almost 2 years. Almost got the m5; but very happy with this. Not tracking it and saved 20k. Great daily driver. The up in hp is making it real tough when time to trade in for anything else. Already went through one set of summer tires....
The "shouty" part was said perfectly thats the reason my dad chose this over an m5, he just didnt want people to know, also you nailed the sound comparison much deeper than an m5
I have a f10 550i and I agree with how he characterized the engine. The detuned engine sounds much more natural. I feel like because of less turbocharging and the the fact that there is more torque than horsepower you get this more classic v8 vibe. It's not until you get above 4500 that you really notice that the boost just keeps going in an M5

@@mattX5 True. M550i is permanent xDrive, it can only be turned off on the M5. M550i is however a safer car for people that only race in straight lines.
Literally my all time favorite 5 series, Ms included. It ticks all the boxes for me (only change I’d make is getting the LCI taillights): - Makes big power - can be easily modded for WAY MORE power - has all the creature comforts I like - ACTUALLY SOUNDS LIKE A V8
Agree with you: sounds and looks awesome! I'd buy one like this any day over an M5: much more discrete but still enough power for normal Autobahn driving.
Max as always amazing review. Passion and enjoyment on another level. I own 2018 M550i and enjoy it every day. Many people keep asking me why not M5 since I had many M cars before i got this M performance M550i ? U can’t answer this question unless u drive this car. It’s simply astonishing and for everything except track days is simply better then M5.
This car just pushes all the right buttons on me, it is quick to 250 kph and it looks like it will run all day at that speed. Nice review and a nice spec as well! How can I ask for more? Thank you for sharing this video!
I have one and had no idea I was buying this type of car. It is so tempting to step on it at all times, it takes off like a canon and your stomach and heart goes on panic. I love the wheels also and fantastic sound system that is better than my home.
Sounds like the RS6's advantages are mostly from its more agressive launch control. Would be interesting to see a rolling race between the RS6 and M550i.
Thank you for reviewing this model. Its subjetive but i so agree that this is the best combination between sport and comfort. The sound is much better than m5, no debate. As a Mercedes-Benz guy i really miss the E500 from w211 and w212. That deep subtil rumble is so itoxicating.

Man you really need to work on having cameras from outside when going Vmax. That’s would be a huge hit for the channel. I love the POV and is why I liked the channel, but that’s still my suggestion.

The new RS6 suffers a lot all the emission standards systems like new OPF etc, I don’t know in BMW what they do for not downgrade their vehicle power and performances. Anyway, this car with this engine is really really impressive !
Super drive! So lucky - you have freeway roads that support 260 kmph. Have the same car and interior except Carbon black exterior. Here in NJ, every time I start to enjoy a high speed drive on highway, a pickup truck or a huge 10 wheel dump truck is blocking the left speed lane and I have to switch and cross illegally on right or just give up. Cannot even drive in a mode as the asphalt is broken badly. It’s So bad in US, I just traded the 550 for a X6 50. This is a civilized, gentleman ride and the roads here are Wild West third world and you feel so small and insecure in a 5 series sedan driving next to 3 ton Ford dodge GM pickups. Deutschland motor #1!
It definitely sounds better than the current M-V8 Engines. Would prefer a M850i Cabriolet over the M8 Cabriolet just because of the way better sound and me not driving at tracks.
Maks, maybe You could start giving the numbers of fuel consumption during the test. I know the conditions of the test are special (pedal to the metal), but it would be very interesting to compare f.e. M550D vs M550i during the "Autobahn Blast".
I don't really like this two different kinds of m cars. But I guess from a marketing perspective it works. Most people don't want a proper m car, it's too biased towards racing for day-to-day tastes. But they'd like the badge.
I bought a new M550i. Thanks for the review. Btw, why were you comparing this car with RS6? The logical comparison for M550i is S6 and for M5, its RS6. Regardless, i love that this car is so far ahead of S6 that it was compared to RS6 instead :D
I have a 2018 M550i with the grandfather spec, mocha leather and burl walnut, in Mediterranean Blue. Love the car. Perfect except a bit too soft for the track. Although that could have been the RFT tires that came with my spec. They are gone now.....
Has BMW addressed the Hot V Overheating Issues? Such as Fried Turbocharges, Failed Fuel Injectors, Battery Drain from Fan Running 10-15min after turning off the Engine, Coolant Running through Turbos should Run for 23 min after turning off the Engine. There were 2 Class Action Lawsuits pending for this N63 Engine. In the Past, 4.4 V8 Burns 1 quart of Oil every 750 miles, so it would burn 8 quarts at every Oil change intervals. I would Still consider Purchasing 2021 Model if BMW Fixed the issues.

Just looked up the power to weight difference between the two.
RS6 = 194kW/ton
M550i = 213kW/ton

I got anxiety on 9:00 as you were driving 260 and the list was covering the view. I almost crashed man.

I would remove the m badges, all cesium gray trim and M550i. Replace the M550i with 530hp. For most people it would look like 530i.

The m550i is actually a 10 second car. It has the same timing as the m5 non-lci and .1 second slower than m5 competition (non-lci)

Personal preference - the wooden inlays really dates the car, it's should be Carbon or brushed alloy. Looks like a new Vandem Plas Austin 😆
No way. Wood fits so great. Carbon is too flashy imo whereas this looks vintage. But taste differs😉

that price ...i think its an error... in italy 550ix starts at 96k E...i think there are not enough options on the list to push it up to 140k euros
