I spent 30 years as a Chicago cop, 17 in homicide. It's a sad thing when your life comes to a place where you feel it's worth nothing. There are two types of men who take these types of steps. One is the type who just kill their family, and the other is the type who never will, they are simply feeling desperate. The big problem for cops is you have no clue which type you're dealing with. It is just a sad thing to see.

This is why they have hostage negotiators to deal with this kind of situation. Unfortunately there is often not enough time to have one in place. What David was saying, is that when you first arrive you have to quickly assess what you are dealing with, and when the man is brandishing a gun, you don't have the luxury of time. I can appreciate what he is saying. You don't want to have to shoot the man who is no real risk, but on the other hand, if you fail to shoot and he turns out to be that guy who shoots his family, then that would weigh heavily on you as well. There was a show on A&E called body cam, and its sad how quickly a simple call like that turns into a cop getting murdered.
I believe in police reform, and to ACTUALLY defend departments who hire and keep very bad cops employed despite clear issues of police abuse by these cops. But there are good cops who deserve to be funded and protected properly. So the whole defending thing is a gray issue for me.
There was an episode where they dealt with a call and the guy and clearly a nut job and was speaking crazy. One cop was trying to be nice and talk to him for so long. They left when the guy finally calmed down and seemed better. 2 hours later, the guy calls again and the same cop goes to the call to talk to him again, and the nut job opens fire though the door and kills the cop, hitting other cops as well. It was so bad. They honestly should have never left the first time and called for a mental health expert to come and also talk to the guy. The cop was nice enough and did his best, but the guy was clearly having a paranoid mental attack and wasn't making any sense. Kept saying his neighbors are trying to kill him or do something to him. He was just off his rocker.

If a group of armed civilians with pistols and semi-automatic rifles do that to you whilst you are binge watching netflix, it's called home invasion and breaking and entering, and they are called armed assailants/intruders.

Margaret McGlasson Suicide isn’t an act of cowardice, it’s an act of despair. Often in the moments before someone completes suicide, the person is not thinking clearly for any number of reasons, for instance, they may be under the influence of alcohol and or drugs, may have stopped taking mood stabilizing medication, be sleep deprived, may have endured a recent traumatic event, may be angry or depressed, or a combination of any of those. I don’t know this man, but I did know my son very well, and I guarantee you he was no coward. In the time since my kind, funny, beautiful, intelligent, soulful, and caring son completed suicide, I’ve learned a lot about the state of mind suicide survivors were in when they attempted, and that a high percentage of them are thankful they did not succeed. So before you rip me a new one while defending your comment, please know this comes from a place of me wanting to educate people, remove mental health stigmas, and raise awareness for suicide prevention. If this man had gone to jail, he may have gotten the help he needed, and those children may still have their dad. Most people are blissfully unaware of what it’s like to lose someone that way, thank goodness. But neither you nor I could say what was really going on in this mans life that led him to that point, that day. Chances are he was experiencing suicidal ideations long before that day, or before the officers were on scene. So instead of chalking it up to cowardice, maybe consider that those children are going through hell, probably still love their dad, and with any luck may not read your comment. Those kids are going to need love and support, therapy, and years of kindness and acceptance. They definitely don’t need to see people passing unqualified judgments on their dad without knowing anything about him except assumptions they’ve made after watching a few minutes of body cam footage of the worst day of their lives.

it’s so important to teach boys and young men how to feel and accept their emotions, and how to process things like rejection and loss. instead men are taught that those things make them weak and after a while some of them just snap like this, and it costs people their lives and sense of safety. it’s horrible and needs to stop.

We inherit all the good and bad of our parents. In this case, if only her father suffered from this type of depression then her chances of developing this illness are 50%. But because women suffer more from depression than men do they might develop it at a younger age than their father because of their gender. It's always a good idea to study the family medical history so as to make better choices for your health.
