  • With the 2016 MacBook Pro revamp, Apple introduced a sleek, powerful laptop complete with the revolutionary new Touch Bar interface, and sparked controversy by removing the SD card reader and MagSafe found in last year's model in favor of an all-Thunderbolt 3 port layout. Which is better? Find out in our video comparison.

      Said it fit easily! So apparently not very tight with old one.

    • @BRBallin1
      @BRBallin1 7 лет назад +10

      No way. No regrets. I got it for a great price without paying sales tax. Macs typically last 5-6 years, at least my 13 inch MacBook Pro did. My last laptop was 2010 MBP 13inch. So I could probably assume that this one will last me 5 years. I love the soundless force touch trackpad, slimmer design, lots of ports, battery life, and most importantly the retina display.

Just wait until the ssd, memory, etc began to fail which they will, since they are all soldered on the board its going to cost about $1000 or more just to fix, there is going to be a crapload of pissed people.

      neil Everything you mentioned is a bunch of maybes.
      Sure, this MacBook has seen its share of hardware errors, but the issues do not affect a fast majority of users. Those complaining are being vocal about it, which creates the illusion that the issues are widespread. Some people just get unlucky and manage to get a unit with faulty parts. It happens, be it a Mac or a PC. Nothing is made perfectly. Plus, if the issues do prove to be widespread, Apple will surely launch an exchange program, as they quite often do with consistent hardware failures.
      For the majority of people, this MacBook will be fantastic, and will do exactly what they want it to reliably, and be a joy to use.

    • @neil78b
      @neil78b 7 лет назад +1

      XxInf3ctedxX
      What? These things fail on every device because they can only accept so many read/writes and screen time... you can easily repair it on the older MacBook Pro or any other laptop but the design of this makes it literally impossible... You obviously don't know anything about electronics because this will affect everyone, its just a matter if they won't to lose that much money or buy a new one, either way its a lose situation because of this.

      TheNoerdy1221 haha I have the exact same feeling. Seeing all the news articles and videos about how over priced and flawed the new MacBook Pro was almost made me want to return it. But in the end, it is an improvement over the last generation, just a pain in the wallet.

    Only a true Apple fanatic can assert that lower performance, lower battery life, more challenging IO, and a higher price tag is a recommended buy. Full disclaimer, I own a Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, and iPhone. I'm a developer working in a LAMP environment that uses apps that aren't supported on Linux, so Macs are my go-to for professional work. I've been using Apple products for nearly 30 years, and love most of my Apple products -- but I have no platform loyalty, and anyone that claims this is a better machine than the 2015 model has the wool pulled over their eyes.
    Can't play BF1 on Bootcamp on the 2015 model? Bullshit. I also own a 2013 model with a 750m that can handle most games. The assertion that lower performance in Geekbench doesn't matter because of throttling on the 2015 models CPU is totally anecdotal -- this doesn't happen in every use-case, and thus lower performance is going to affect you most of the time. Battery life is also abysmal, and is far worse than you've claimed here. My 2015 gets 7.5 hours of use in my normal workflow, the 2016 gets 4; that's a fairly drastic difference if you ask me.
    The 2016 MacBook Pro is the first MacBook Pro I've ever returned for a full refund. Put simply, it's so far from being worth the price premium, that it's almost laughable. Do yourselves a favor and find a 2015 model, grab some 3rd party upgrades from OWC, and wait for Apple to get their shit together.

    • @MrFefeleaga
      @MrFefeleaga 7 лет назад +11

      I couldn't agree more. I've bought myself a 2015 mbp, and it wasn't even because of the money, it was simply because of differences in performance. I'd have preferred the 2016 model from an aesthetical point of view. It really looks so much better and I'd have loved an even better screen, but the shortcomings of the 2016 model are simply too much.

    • @Silverjerk
      @Silverjerk 7 лет назад +4

      It was hard sending that display back, because it was gorgeous, and I loved the Space Gray finish, but at the end of the day it came down to the disappointing performance plaguing almost every other aspect of the machine. I think you made the right decision with the 2015 model. I hope Apple isn't stubborn, hears the complaints, and comes back next hardware cycle with something that is worth the investment.

      So. When will the next MacBook pro launched? 😁

    • @real_naiyas
      @real_naiyas 7 лет назад

      From a personal perspective I will be passing up the 2016 MacBook Pro because, quite frankly, the chips in it are already far to dated to be worth the price premium and the battery I consider to be a weak point. I do however really like the slightly reduced footprint, weight, and the new port arrangement. I know many consider the ports being an "issue", but for me it is the perfect solution as I absolutely detest cable clutter and outside of the home or office the only dongle I use is a display dongle that I have had to use since 2012 no matter what computer I have had.
      For me if I have to take my charger with me on a day of business travel in 2017 then the battery is too small (yes, it has finally got to that stage where a "working" 8 hour battery life is a demand), then a portable product is failing in one of its main purposes for existence. Whilst I love the reduced weight and size, I am more than willing to compromise this a bit for a decent "working day" battery life.
      Until then I will be keeping my 2012 MacBook Pro as it has plenty of life left in it, and I can live with the compromises I have to have with it without spending a small fortune on a replacement with similar compromises.

    Decent review overall, but I just want to give everyone some clarity about the limits of charging it with the power bank you showed.
    What you showed is the Anker PowerCore+ 20100 USB-C and it is rated at 5V 3A Max Output (15 watts) for charging, while the 2016 MacBook Pro utilizes a 87W charger. So it is true that you CAN charge the 2016 MacBook Pro 15" with this charger, but that will only be if it is asleep, turned off, or perhaps running only the most basic of tasks. Otherwise, the required wattage is going to jump above 15W and the Anker PowerCore will not charge it and will probably power off itself as a protective measure. 15W is plenty to power and charge the little brother 2016 MacBook, but it will not charge and power the 2016 MBP 13" or 15" when they are running in a state that requires above 15W.
    To truly be able to charge and power the 2016 MBP 15", you can get an Omnicharge Omni 20 which can sustain 100W of continuous output which is well above the power requirements of the 2016 MBP 15" even when at full working load. I don't mean this to sound like an advertisement, I only wanted to make sure people are clear about that. I have videos on my channel about the Omnicharge Omni 20 and its amazing capabilities, check it out if you are interested folks, I use one to charge my 2015 MBP 13" with its DC Out Magsafe 2 cable and it works magnificently! :)

    Being picky, it's not necessarily that the cooling systems performance has increased, but the TDP or heat output of the parts inside fell. They went from 50W to 35W GPUs. The cooler for all we know may be breaking even with the old one, or may be designed for the newly lower TDP.

      Then your level of intelligence is not that great. A real and fair comparison would look that the cost to improvement ratio. The cost of the new 2016 laptop plus all the extra connections to have it function as the 2015 model compared to the cost of the older 2015 model. And do an cost analysis of the total cost of the 2016 vs 2015 and the improvement of the performance of the 2016 vs 2015.

      ***** I've returned two Razer Blades, and finally refunded it. I've had two BSoDs in only the first month, noisy coil whine especially in quiet areas, annoyingly thick bezels, short battery life 4-4.5 hrs under very light tasks, and the speakers were a joke when I compared it to the 2016 MacBook. Not to mention Razer is notorious to have a shitty customer service.
      P.S. My blade was the Full HD version because the QHD+ model isn't very well optimized to Windows 10.

My adivce, buy the 2015 with full specs,where u save money obviosuly because this new one os overpriced and when the bugs are solved after one year or two where i actually think some of the ports will come back like the sd card i believe and it will be bug free. I am in the market for a new MacBook pro. My current one is a mid 2010 so it's time for an upgrade. I really like the new MacBook Pro (2016) But I cannot justify spending that much more money (For a decent computer, not the baseline) and dongles included. I think I'm going to go with the 2015 refresh.

    How is the MBP 15" 2015 about battery? Are there any issues or bugs as I read about the new 2016 with touch bar?

    • @real_naiyas
      @real_naiyas 7 лет назад +1

      Many of the battery issues are a result of macOS 10.2 it seems. Unfortunately, most reviewers do not re-run their battery tests every time a new OS is released and so historic battery test results are technically incompatible with recent test results on newer OS's and models.
      I haven't done any tests myself, but based on simple web browsing, email and video playback battery tests the reviews seem to suggest the 2016 models out perform the 2015 models. This does appear to change when heavier tasks are performed (video transcoding, game playing, video editing, app development, photo editing, etc.) as the bigger battery in the 2015 model has more "juice" and so lasts a bit longer than the 2016 model.

    My first computer was a MacBook it has sadly died after 10 years of use. It was my primary laptop and for what I paid it was worth it at the time. I did build a gaming machine for myself as it was used for portability. So I think it's time for an upgrade however I am torn between the old 15 inch the new one. The biggest put off for me is the lack of micro sd slots, the USB ports and the logo not illuminating. I just don't know if external hard drives will work with USB c to micro USB. I don't even know if that cable exists. So I either get the older and slower 2015 model which will be great or do I go with the newest laptop. I am not a great fan on the touch bar I just want the performance aspect.

    Excellent review. But here are two areas that need further elobaration: (1) MagSafe substitutes, and (2) Palm Rejection. The Griffin MagSafe substitute you show in the video is not reversible and can charge the Mac at only 60W, not at the 87W the MBP 15" gets from its charger normally. You failed to mention the Kickstarter Snapnator product that is reversible and claims to charge at full speed (87W). Please make another video for us showing how palms are rejected in various hand positions and usage situations. This is important because I've seen just about every video in the new machines and some say palm rejection is good but not good enough. Thank you.

      The 2.0ghz in the 2016 is slightly faster than the 2015 but you won't see any difference unless you're using editing programs like final cut pro or adobe photoshop. Having had both, I went for the 2015 because I need the ports, I like the light up logo, mag safe is a premium and practical feature and although the new keyboard is really good, it's really loud. Best option is to go into the store and compare the two and see which one you like best.

    Lots of number confusion here. There's the Hz/MHz thing, which has already been pointed out. What's worse, nearly all (if not in fact all) of the comparison figures are wrong. Taking the most significant error, starting at 3:58, the 2016 is not 94 % faster (which would mean it would complete the task in virtually no time at all, not in half the time as is the case). The correct figure is 52 % faster.
    Not even sure where 94 % comes from.
    Get your numbers straight.

    • @MaksimYuryev
      @MaksimYuryev 7 лет назад +1

      Jens Thestrup Toft I've seen it done both ways. This is apples way of doing it. That's where they get their 130% figure for the Radeon 460 pro.

    • @JensThestrupToft
      @JensThestrupToft 7 лет назад

      Some of the other numbers seem to be how much slower 2015 is compared to 2016 rather than how much faster 2016 is than 2015.
      That makes the previous "54 % faster" figure make at least a bit sense.
      But you can't just calculate how much slower something is than something else and then also say that that's how much faster that something else is. It doesn't work like that.
      I've also seen it done both ways now. But this way is completely incorrect.
      Accepting this logic would mean the figure 200 is actually 50 % larger than 100 rather than 100 % larger (as is the case), since 100 is 50 % as large as 200.
      See how it makes no sense?
      Even going by that method, 94 % is completely off. The 2015 is 110 % slower than 2016 in that task, not 94 %.

    • @tobiasmattner5228
      @tobiasmattner5228 7 лет назад +8

      Actually the way the figures are presented in the video are RIGHT, as it is based on a speed, hence the rate of change of something.
      If you move by car twice as fast, so 100 % faster, it takes you half the time to make all the way which is 50 %. You are right when you say, people tend to confuse the percentages in these cases but you are one of them.
      What would be right to say as well, would be to state that a task takes 50 % less time to complete. If a task indeed took 94 % less time to complete which is 94 % less of a VALUE, it would now only take 6 % of the original time, virtually nothing. On the other hand, a 94 % percentage increase of the SPEED of something, is a mere doubling of a rate of change, the actual VALUE (= time) it takes you to complete a task with this increased speed would be 1/1.94 times the original time.
      Values above 100 % totally make sense. Only a speed increase by an infinite amount would yield 0 processing time.
      Get your facts straight before flaming like that.

    • @JensThestrupToft
      @JensThestrupToft 7 лет назад

      +Alex Verbande You are of course correct. But that's not where the error in the video lies. Universally, the video is using a time measure of the time it takes to complete a certain task and is then comparing those figures for the 2015 and 2016 models. So for instance, at 4:05 you have 5.36 for 2015 and 2.55 for 2016. They then put "94 % faster" below it, suggesting a relationship between those two figures which doesn't exist. The video established the amount of time a certain task takes to complete as the measure of how fast the machines are. It then suggests a change of 94 % from the "slow" figure to the "fast" figure. And this is incorrect.
      But thanks for the input (I found your post well-reasoned and have given it a thumbs up). I suppose the video is more inaccurate and misleading than it's strictly wrong, then.

    Hi AppleInsider,
    really really really great review! Thanks!
    I only have one question. I own a MacBook Pro Retina 15" Late 2013. (i7 4x2GHz - Boost up to 3,2 GHz, 8GB RAM, Intel Iris 5100). I'm photo editing 99% of the time and If I work on a few images in Lightroom, Lightroom often has to load the picture (1:1 and smart-preview already calculated)... Will that be better with the new one or is it "normal"?
    And do you think, there's a big difference (in the 2016 model) between the 2,6 and 2,7GHz i7?
    Thank you very much.

    Great review man! this was so refreshing from the other opinionated and emotion filled reviews from other channels. yours was clear concise and had evidence to support all the rumours that were being spread. i also loved how you didn't fall into the trap of being overly emotive in the lack of ports and instead saw that realistically its not that big of a deal while still giving a good downside to the new macbook pro in the form of a lack of sd card. just wanted to say well done and you have earned my sub. nice work.
