Born and raised in L.A...52 yrs old and still remember going to Venice Beach in 74 or so...it was such slum...my parents made us wear shoes on the sand under the pier because of all the broken glass....its changed so much...this scene always gets me misty eyed...RIP Jay...
"Hey, sorry I left man....I just, had to payed the rent" And then, THAT LOOK of Heath. Tenderness beyond words. As close as two real man can get....and then finishing off: "Your momma, she has to eat, she has to eat" So many fucking emotions boys. This is real acting.
San Fran, sunset district here. Ran into an old surf friend. We talked about how different times were and what we were like back in the day. He told me the this movie captures the way we were. He was right. But the film is bittersweet. Proud to have been such a hardnosed kid. Sad so many friends fell along the way. Offer it up to God, I guess.
Thank you for all the views and comments, I posted this scene because I really enjoy it and can feel the passion and the pain in the actors. Old Man was a very fitting song for this seemingly somber scene. | facebook.com/DynamicDesignzWebDev585
one of the guys on the team had cancer and had his head shave for the operation, in the scene he does it in his honor to show that they are not different, they will always be friends
I didn't even realize this was Heath until this scene when he took of his glasses , he was great in this movie and probably would have won man awards but like with all "just good " movies , the greatness of the performance got washed away and underappreciated.
I really wish I could be growing up then and not now, it sucks what world im going into, to be living and growing up when skating really kicked in, would be the best childhood, not to mention how great the music was, now we have whinny little shits and terrible music, the only thing fun is biking and skating. This movie inspires me to go out and make my life how I want it though, I will never stop watching it.
Old Man -Look who's here. -Bastards didn't send fire trucks for over six hours or something. -Yeah, they wanted it gone. -They wanted it gone. -You know, the pier has been here for over years. Old man -You know that's where I learned to surf? Right there. -They look at the cove as a shi*hole. Old man -I mean, thank God, man, because in winter this place goes off. Jay Adams -We had it all to ourselves. Old man -We had it all to ourselves, man. You're right. Old Man -I have no reason to come here anymore. Jay Adams -Hey. -Sorry I left, man I just had to pay the rent. Old man -Hey, man. -Your mama, she has to eat, right? -She has to eat...
Hey man all the shit that exists now existed back then it only was different . even if you grew that time you could easily be absorbed by shitty influences .Be grateful man because you can see through the shit and appreciate what's good and what's not ... And for the last part of your comment just do it man
Your race does not define who you are. It doesn't matter if your white or black it is just a skin color. It has nothing to do with how you live your life or how to wear your hair. And race has nothing to do with this scene or movie AT ALL. My opinion, your comment is very ignorant.
Dan Gray & shed his trademark of beauty. his California look. because even though It looks beautiful out there . there's nothing beautiful going on where they're from & he just doesn't identify with it anymore . he wants to look as ugly as he feels. thas how real he is
I thought the movie was pretty shit. But this scene is nothing short of amazing. Skipp talking about how he learned to surf and Jay saying how they all had it all to themselves. And it's all just memories now.
Most people will remember Heath Ledger as the Joker. He will always be Skipp in my heart. "Wear it with pride, maaaan" RIP Heath Ledger and Jay Adams.

I think this scene is the realization that everything is ending, the friendship, the team, there youth.
When it cuts to jay just looking at himself in the mirror, head all shaved, that really gets to me. Super duper powerful scene
Awsome movie with awsome soundtrack

Looks like Axl Rose.

Jay decides to reject cultural/contextual values.
