The GBA is possibly my most treasured gaming system. Fire Emblem/Sacred Stones, Pokemon R/S/E/FR/LG, and the Mario Advance games are some of my absolute favorite games.
The Nintendo DS Lite also has a Game Boy Advance cartridge slot. The DS Lite cartridge slot has a plastic cover over it and was also used for rumble paks etc. It was only the DSi/XL that completely removed the GBA cartridge slot.
All handhelds are a pain in the rear if your trying to get them cheaper thru yardsales. People are feent out and all the big fairs and yards are sold as soon as they are open. I knew people that sold gameboys at one for like 10 to 20 when they are 70 online. Same people i was able to get a ps1 for 10 bucks from. I was mad about the gameboys tho.
Ive been playing all my gba games on the gamecube gameboy player, for a good few years now. It's my personal favorite way to play these old games now. Even got a few pokémon gba rom hacks physically for it, and couldn't be happier
The gba is my favorite handheld of all time. Advance Wars for the win. Of course I never owned a ds as a kid, and I put a ton of time (and love) into the game boy color
It's so odd that as a kid I thought the hand held game boxes were lesser and not worth keeping. I have all my ps1-ps3 xbox, 360 and gamecube games still in their shells but not a single gb, gba, ds 3ds, or psp shells. I wish I had all of those gba boxes so bad haha.
I bought my cousin's gamecube with the game boy player from him years ago. Since my gameboy advance died several years ago i play my gameboy collection on that. Been thinking about getting an sp. Never had one when i was a kid
I almost threw away my copy of emerald I found in storage because i thought it was a bootleg and was missing the label, but after seeing how much they go for online i decided to look a bit closer and saw it was legit! 😂
The GBA SP was such a special thing for me because it was the first system that was just mine (and not shared between me and a sibling). I still have my cobalt blue one to this day, and I’m also very fortunate to have the adapter complete with the disc that lets me play GBA games on my GameCube Also vibing at the end with the Dragon Ball adventure love, idk if you’re watching Daima at all but Toriyama’s last ever arc that he personally contributed to is basically SCREAMING to be made into an RPG. It’s like Dragon Quest met Sandland but starring Goku
I recently bought a gba sp and modded it with a new shell, ips screen and bigger battery. For games I have an EZ-flash omega and Jr. I absolutely love it and yes it's definitely worth buying.
Exceptional recommendations. I love all things Mega Man, but Battle Network is one of my all time favorite series. I would have added Metroid Fusion and Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga
As an early adopter of the Delta emulator app, I can confirm that playing the games the official way with an actual GBA is the way to go - especially if you don’t want to use touch screen controls or deal with getting a controller specifically for mobile gaming. Yes the games are expensive, yes the hardware is old, and yes the console has a lot of limitations but playing them officially is the only way to preserve them in their release state and for that reason alone I am going to continue buying more games for the system. I had a GBA SP when I was younger and can see why people prefer going that route but for me personally, I just got an OG GBA for cheap and modded the screen with an IPS LCD screen and I am in love with it and haven’t regretted my decision once. You can also mod a USB-C charging battery pack to it pretty easily as well but I prefer the old school AA batteries because I can just swap them out with other rechargeable one’s in a matter of seconds. The Mario golf game you mentioned is a banger!! I’d also recommend Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, both the Advance War games, all the fire emblems, and you can never go wrong with Tetris for the original gameboy!
As someone who still has an AGS-101 with a pristine screen and all my games, I never use it anymore. I pretty much just keep it sealed in it's bag. Ever since I got an Anbernic RG35XXSP I have been using that. The fact that I don't have to worry so much about the hardware since they are like 50 bucks and have great screens so if one were to ever get damaged I could just get a new one and swap the cards. The biggest plus though is retroachievements! Which I can't do on my original sp. Awesome battery life also, the only down side is in extended sessions the buttons can cause a bit of finger fatigue as they are a bit stiff. Newer version I have heard are way better though.
Long Yap short, get the new 3ds xl, around 150 (just got one last week 11/3/24) for that and other than the price of a micro SD (dont get a nice printed one this will scratch it up) and mod it. The number of games you can put on it and all that make up for being 150
Funny enough I’ve been “reacquiring” my old gba and Super Nintendo games and being able to have 100 games on my phone that I can play at any time with a controller is amazing. Granted a modded gameboy sounds pretty sick.
Love the gameboy advance I have one but I'd like to get an SP someday. Wanna keep them all orginal and unmodded, I think its a nice reminder of what was. I have a steamdeck and such for emulation if I wanna play them on the fly. I'm very picky with what I pick up when it comes to games on a old nintendo console cause they are so expensive most of the time. Love the video, one of my fave handhelds, so many memories
Facebook marketplace for the win!! I got a SP w/ charger for $40 and another guy had a Color and an Advance with a Gameboy branded carrying case and a bunch of (filler) games all for $60. So for $100 I got all 3 different GB (missing the OG & micro). Never modded a console before but I took a chance on the SP, did a shell swap and installed an IPS screen, It was so easy I modded all of them LOL. I would say, find one cheap, buy the mods online, have a fun afternoon modding and learning. You will appreciate the final product so much more cause you know you did all that yourself AND it won't be anywhere near $300 like the ones on Ebay.
Shining Force Resurrection of the Dark Dragon, Shining Soul, Shining Soul 2, Summon Night Swordcraft Story 1 and 2. All on the GBA. Although be ready to fork some real money on those complete.
To me it's worth it. I never had a GBA before but my sister had a OG Nintendo DS where i played all my GBA/GB/GBC games. Something about using original hardware always felt better to me. Ordered a modded GBA as a Christmas present he he
Your SP has a front lit display, the AGS-001. The AGS-101 has a backlit display and it’s much closer in quality to the IPS. No biggie, and someone else probably already mentioned this.
Medabots (not AX), is a fun 3 on 3 RPG of sorts. Tactics ogre: the knight of Lodis is also very nice as a final fantasy tactics style rpg. Final fantasy tactics advance is also a pretty good game, but I dislike the world/theme compared to the original War of the Lions on ps1/psp etc.
The original GBA is the one I grew up with. I had the Gameboy Color before that, but to me horizontal Handhelds will always be my preferred way to play. Recently started to collect physical games and damn CIB for certain games is definitely not easy to find for a nice price. But that's the thrill of it 😁For now, I'll try to get the games I've had in my childhood.
Its an amazing little device, but it is definitely not worth it in 2024. The most popular games that weve played growing up are so damn expensive nowadays (ie. Pokemon and a personal favorite, Yu-Gi-Oh). Id rather buy an emulation device.
Gameboy sp was the goat. Everytime I got grounded and got mine taken away from me in like 3rd grade I'd just borrow my friends extra one and wake up 2 hours before school early af so I could game for a bit every day😂 ah memories
There have been rumors for awhile now that one of the still standing pinball companies (Stern) maybe making a real life Pokémon Pinball Cabinet to sell to pinball/arcade/Pokémon fans.
Thanks for mentioning your Sonic retrospective, will have to watch it now 👍 My dad gave my son his SP so I’ve been trying to build a collection for him. I got him a Pokemon video cartridge along with a Sonic X video cartridge for road trips. My dad gave him minish cap with the SP and he’s enjoyed that. I found super Mario world for the advance as well at a retro game shop for him. Have been looking for a Sonic game to add to his collection.
Personally I think Final Fantasy Tactics Advance needs to be on your list. I've put so many hours on it and it's probably my favorite GBA game, I saw you listed other grid style turn based games but FFTA takes the cake for me.
Some of the prices for GBA games are ridiculous… and when you look at the quality of the boxes and such for complete games, it’s just as ridiculous at times. It can be rough trying to find specific things in decent condition at fair prices, especially on EBay or otherwise.
i highly recommend giving the GBA a new screen. thats really all it needs. and ya you gotta be careful modding when it comes to assembly. patience can determine everything
I love the shape of the original GBA. Looks so slick. I might buy a modded one and a flashcart, though I find Steam Deck and 3DS as a beautiful replacement. Any advice?
Ive Been seriously looking into the Funny Playing GBC. Reasonably priced and I would enjoy the assembly process. I keep bouncing back and forth between buying the FPGBC or the Rgxx35sp from Anbernic.
I wish I invested in Gameboys when they were like £15-£20 now they are £50 and idk I'm thinking about it just to take to work and play at lunch or on the train for when we travel as I don't feel comfortable lugging my steam deck around just yet
Monster Rancher Advance 2 is a really good GBA game that's still super cheap, unlike pretty much every other GBA game you might want to play Final fantasy tactics advance is kind of cheap, too
Ive seen a og gba with a sp 101 screen. I think thats a better mod than a ips that doesnt have the lcd blocks or scanlines of the original gameboy advance.
Just get a DS. You can play animal crossing on a DS. You can play a new 2D mario. You can play good mario kart. You can play professor layton on a DS. You can play rhythm heaven. You can play 3D metroid. You can play a good mario party and play games wirelessly with friends. You can even play GBA.
Dang I didn't know that both versions of Pokémon Pinball was on the GameBoy Advance! Which of the two would you recommend to someone that's looking to pickup a copy? Should I get the first Pokémon Pinball game or the second one?
Need a gameboy advance unmodded, over a gameboy advance sp. When the apoclypse happens, all you need to do is scrounge for batteries rather than produce electricity for charging
This year I've bought a complete in box NES GBA SP and a GameCube/Game Boy Player, I don't have any interest in modding my SP.. I don't entirely understand the point when there's so many ways to play these games on a better screen. If it's in absolutely deplorable condition ok, but otherwise I'd rather they be left alone.
Yeah and i think dsi doesnt have anyway to natively run gba games either right? Even 3ds can natively do gba games even with digital roms
@@robmalcolm8042gba_runner is pretty good
Drill Dozer, Metroid Fusion, Metroid Zero Mission, Astroboy Omega Factor, Ninja Five-O, Car Battler Joe, WarioWare games, Advance Guardian Heroes, Boktai games, DK King of Swing, Gunstar Super Heroes, Iridion II, Kirby Amazing Mirror, Klona games, Zelda Minish Cap
The GBA is experiencing a huge comeback seemingly out of nowhere. I'm currently on my first playthrough of Mother 3
I was mad about the gameboys tho.
besides the fact I have to watch 4 ads for this video(youtube is very agressive with ads lately), this was a great video about the GBA system
Ive been playing all my gba games on the gamecube gameboy player, for a good few years now. It's my personal favorite way to play these old games now. Even got a few pokémon gba rom hacks physically for it, and couldn't be happier
Golden Sun The Lost Age is GOATed, you have to get your hands on it. And Final Fantasy Tactics Advance!
Bro my fav channel uploading on my day off lets go!!!
As someone that just bought an SP and an EZFlash, omfg 100% worth it! Every single game still holds up and I'm working through FFIV at this moment.
golden sun on the pockets screen is pretty great!
always enjoy the vids , appreciate the consistency
I do miss owning that gameboy advance era (8th Grade for me). Everything was golden in gaming in the early 2000’s
Give Lady Sia a try, a bit of a hidden gem and not to expensive I think.
Just get a gba everdrive and u can play all the gameboy advance games from one ecartridge and don’t need to pay a ton of money for each game
Dude!!! I remember that commercial at the beginning
SP was amazing. Was my favorite portable Nintendo made till the switch. I have the class red one.
The GBA SP was such a special thing for me because it was the first system that was just mine (and not shared between me and a sibling). I still have my cobalt blue one to this day, and I’m also very fortunate to have the adapter complete with the disc that lets me play GBA games on my GameCube
Also vibing at the end with the Dragon Ball adventure love, idk if you’re watching Daima at all but Toriyama’s last ever arc that he personally contributed to is basically SCREAMING to be made into an RPG. It’s like Dragon Quest met Sandland but starring Goku
Worth it? Of course it's goddamn worth it. One of the best consoles ever with an incredible library. Still rocking my GBA SP to this day.
Even more so with a everdrive if the games are too expensive to someone
I recently bought a gba sp and modded it with a new shell, ips screen and bigger battery. For games I have an EZ-flash omega and Jr.
I absolutely love it and yes it's definitely worth buying.
I don't think you mentioned Shining Soul? I loved that game!
Exceptional recommendations. I love all things Mega Man, but Battle Network is one of my all time favorite series. I would have added Metroid Fusion and Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga
You need to collect all the Spider Man games for the GBA. Some of them were really good
As an early adopter of the Delta emulator app, I can confirm that playing the games the official way with an actual GBA is the way to go - especially if you don’t want to use touch screen controls or deal with getting a controller specifically for mobile gaming. So worth it in 2024!!!! I love the Analogue Pocket for GB, GBC, and GBA. Also I love the AGB and SP versions. The Gameboy is amazing!
Long Yap short, get the new 3ds xl, around 150 (just got one last week 11/3/24) for that and other than the price of a micro SD (dont get a nice printed one this will scratch it up) and mod it. The number of games you can put on it and all that make up for being 150
IPS screen is cool if the screen doesn´t work, but the AGS 101, ITA, frontlit and non backlit screen are a big part of using authentic hardware imo.
All great choices. I played a majority of these games back in the day!
Funny enough I’ve been “reacquiring” my old gba and Super Nintendo games and being able to have 100 games on my phone that I can play at any time with a controller is amazing. Granted a modded gameboy sounds pretty sick.
It's crazy you just posted this I repaired my GBA SP in the last week or so XD
Love the gameboy advance I have one but I'd like to get an SP someday. Wanna keep them all orginal and unmodded, I think its a nice reminder of what was. Gonna need one of these videos every year.

I think you’d really enjoy the two Summon Night: Swordcraft Story games (the third one was never translated). They’re really well-made action RPGs :)
''video game''
that's genuinely such a strange word.
over here in the netherlands we have aways said ''computer game''.
Have about 75 gameboy advance games in my collection. love that system

Tactics ogre: the knight of Lodis is also very nice as a final fantasy tactics style rpg.
Final fantasy tactics advance is also a pretty good game, but I dislike the world/theme compared to the original War of the Lions on ps1/psp etc.
Medabots rpg is one of my favorite gba games
I thought about buying it again, only $75 for the cartridge 😂
Also, the pixel remastered FF games do NOT include the additional content found on the GBA versions.
For a 32 bit handheld, the Game Boy Advance was very underpowered, it just looked like a portable SNES, there were no games that resembled the PS1.
Its an amazing little device, but it is definitely not worth it in 2024. The most popular games that weve played growing up are so damn expensive nowadays (ie. Pokemon and a personal favorite, Yu-Gi-Oh). Id rather buy an emulation device.
Yeah you're right, I was just looking at getting pokemon crystal and it's going for like $130
Also most of the main gba games people care about will eventually come to switch online besides Pokémon unfortunately
You can get a flash cartridge you don't need to buy every game
Idk I bought an ags 101 GBA sp and games and it looks so good. And nothing beats playing on the original hardware
I saw something called yugioh the old days it's gonna have a bunch of older yugioh games on it
Gameboy sp was the goat. Everytime I got grounded and got mine taken away from me in like 3rd grade I'd just borrow my friends extra one and wake up 2 hours before school early af so I could game for a bit every day😂 ah memories

I would suggest FF Tactics Advance, and Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis. They are two of my favorite GBA games
Buying legit hardware will always be worth it despite the prices people charge for everything, the sp is the goat 🤟🏻
Metroid Fusion, Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories, and Final Fantasy Tactics are must haves for GBA.
The gba is my favorite handheld. But with my vision decreasing with age. Id only buy one with a screen upgrade
I loved playing some of the early Yugioh GBA games ❤
Some of the prices for GBA games are ridiculous… and when you look at the quality of the boxes and such for complete games, it’s just as ridiculous at times. It can be rough trying to find specific things in decent condition at fair prices, especially on EBay or otherwise.
My fave GBA games are Summon Night Swordcraft Story 1 & 2 and Advance Guardian Heroes.
No sir, you are retro rebound! 0:35
i highly recommend giving the GBA a new screen. thats really all it needs. and ya you gotta be careful modding when it comes to assembly. patience can determine everything
Anyone who has a switch i would just play golden sun on the switch. Being playable on the TV is cool
Your Pikachu sp is front lit, not back lit.
One of my favorite systems of all-time, but it is absolutely ruined by retro game prices and not worth it over just getting an emulation handheld.
Do you think you’ll ever do a remembering the untold legends games?
He found Nickleback and said "I want that style"
I think most GBA games are a little too dated to buy a whole console but I modded my 3DS so I can just play them there
If I had a slightly bigger GBA collection I would for sure get an Analogue Pocket, but not really worth it for the handful I still have.
Gba sp ags 101 with ez flash or everdrive
I wish I invested in Gameboys when they were like £15-£20 now they are £50 and idk I'm thinking about it just to take to work and play at lunch or on the train for when we travel as I don't feel comfortable lugging my steam deck around just yet
ok i can already hear you think: ''dude, the netherlands..''
but just think about it.
Monster Rancher Advance 2 is a really good GBA game that's still super cheap, unlike pretty much every other GBA game you might want to play
Final fantasy tactics advance is kind of cheap, too
Gameboy Advance SP is goated.
Ive seen a og gba with a sp 101 screen. I think thats a better mod than a ips that doesnt have the lcd blocks or scanlines of the original gameboy advance.

Dang I didn't know that both versions of Pokémon Pinball was on the GameBoy Advance! Which of the two would you recommend to someone that's looking to pickup a copy? Should I get the first Pokémon Pinball game or the second one?
I had the same gameboy color
Wish you had chapters on this
analog pocket is the only way to go
You come to me and get a modded classic IPS backlit gameboy advance! :) SP's are great, but they're uncomfortable!
Fully modded carts too :)
I recommend pokemon unbound on gba, that game is gold
15 hours in and I can vouch this game is 🔥
Need a gameboy advance unmodded, over a gameboy advance sp. When the apoclypse happens, all you need to do is scrounge for batteries rather than produce electricity for charging
This year I've bought a complete in box NES GBA SP and a GameCube/Game Boy Player, I don't have any interest in modding my SP.. I have an irrational hate for the fact that you say "backwards compat" instead of "backwards compatability"
What about Castlevania aria of sorrow?
Do a video on Pokémon Pocket! The new mobile game.
Or...you can buy an Odin 2 and play everything for 300$ (?)
Pd: great video!!!
I understand this is not an option because playing in original hardware is priceless
Hell yeah it's worth it!
Vetro gaming also sells modded GBA
Justice league heroes:the flash
I didn't know this game existed before today, and I bought justice league heroes for ps2 on ebay
The GBA should’ve never stopped(stolen comment)
I still have my gameboy sp nes edition
Is there a Mario golf on switch ? I’m sure there is
Day 4 of asking matty to review the gothic games from pyranha bytes in every new video
GBA SP is the greatest gameboy of all time
Not worth it because of emulation it’s cool to own stuff but emulation is the future
My gameboy grail is the micro
