Nastro Azzurro and Moretti are the two "mainstream" beers from my homeland that I'd save - Nastro Azzurro is especially good when paired with dishes that have lots of flavour, like a good pizza with spicy salame or a carbonara, while Moretti feels more like an after-meal treat.

Hi Simon, All these compare videos are brilliant. I've come to learn over the last few years any beer brewed under license in the UK are basically crap and nothing like the original beers. Therefore if I want a lager style beer I tend to buy Warsteiner in the bottle or Hoffmeister in the Keg. German is better
Great video Simon. I recently stopped buying green bottles unless they're in packaging. I had a skunky Staropramen a few weeks ago and it put me right off. I even now pull bottles off the back of the shelf away from the supermarket lights 😁
I will say I am not a totally into beer. But I love a good beer to chill at hot days or just when you had a hard day at work and deserve a good one. But I just love these reviews so much, I would love to drink a beer with you! Since a year I am following your reviews and they make my day every time. Just make me smile so much. Honestly I have never been in the UK. But these reviews just want to make me visit the UK and cheers with you with an awesome beer :)
Peroni bottle's a couple of years ago still where just as nice as draught. But since them cheap four for three deals have been staying around in Asda over time they began tasting like ass. Draught though amazing for a ice cold lager but rip off pub prices ruins it on average seems to be around £6 a pint now. Great on draught at curing a bad hangover quickly thats for sure then move back on to the decent ipas and wheats haha
Tesco and now Sainsburys have 3 x 660 bottles for £5.50p and according to my local Tesco manager, many pubs are buying vast quantities of it with their mark ups varying.
As others have said, Moretti on the Krups Sub is great and far superior to either of the bottles tested. They do the standard L'Autentica (4.6%), plus a malt-based Baffo d'Oro (4.8%) and the La Rossa (7.2%), which is a bock beer. All are brewed in Italy. Baffo is my person fave 🍺
Always used to think Peroni tasted like chlorine, like a swimming pool. I had a mate who loved Peroni and when I told him that, it completely ruined it for him 😂
Palates are weird. I saw a review of Green Mountain where the reviewer said it tasted like onions and one for Punk IPA where it tasted like washing up liquid. I have a friend who can't eat coriander becasue it tastes like washing up liquid to her. Proper Job tastes like Woodbines to me, Oakham Citra tastes like Rothmans.
The uk Heineken brewed moretti is better then the Italian brewed as the Tadcaster grimston well produces a better water for beer. Even the Italian beer drinkers agree!
Don't mind either beer, though I buy Peroni in bottles of 4 in the carboard boxes - which I'm guessing helps reduce the light affecting it. Peroni Gran Riserva is a really nice beer, but only ever had it in the rare restaurants which have it.
It would be interesting to see what you think of Menebrea, it's a genuine brewed in Italy lager with a very smooth taste and they usually stock it at Morrisons in the 4 for 3 section. It's my to go Italian lager these days (I just hope Heineken don't get their hands on it). But the best Italian beer I've had was in Venice, and it was a ruby beer whose name I cannot remember now, which is a shame because it was a beautiful red beer.
Beer, like wine and any other beverage is down to personal choice and enjoyment at the end of the day. But I'm surprised you don't look at the cost comparison more. At least Peroni is "genuine" in that is still brewed in Italy and yet the Moretti is brewed "down the road" in the UK - so why isn't it vastly cheaper. Provenance is worth paying for in my book, otherwise I'd feel ripped off.
My front of house OCD is kicking in here, 1. Bottle should not contact the glass and 2. The pour should never glug glug. Have to say I do participate in both but manufactured for the uk market. Once the big conglomerates get involved the taste changes, just look at what happened to Stella Artois and brew dog
I think you will find Simon that most beers are brewed in the UK not Italy , I was disappointed when i bought Birra Moretti as i was expecting they import it from Italy to the UK but nope brewed in UK and its never as good as the authentic beer
Blame Heineken for being cheap skates. Just like after they took over Strongbow in 2008 they dropped the abv from 5.3 to 5.0 then again in 2020 to 4.5%. Its the only cider I would ever drink on occasion. They also discontinued Stongbow Super 7.5% which all the posh alkies used to drink.
I've recently become a big fan of Birra Moretti especially in the hot summers of Florida. My bottles say they're brewed in Italy. I enjoy the crisp clean taste that hits the spot on a hot day. Nice review, sir, and in my opinion very accurate. Peroni is okay but I can't drink more than one bottle of it.
Enjoyed your review. If i could possibly advise you with my modest, humble opinion, when choosing to purchase Peroni, i always go for the 330mil bottles. They are packaged in a way that completely protects them from exposure to UV light. I have notice the difference between the bigger unprotected bottles and smaller bottles. Keep up the good work🍻
The little bit of white foam of the tip of the nose reminded me of a recent film i watched. Thanks. The way these beers are perceived as premium benuses me.
Firstly - When you are buying sunglasses always buy them with brown or amber lenses not grey or green. Not light strike particularly, but brown lenses cut out the blue end of the light spectrum anyway. This can help prevent AMD in your eyes in later life. Secondly - is there a difference when you buy beers in cans rather than green bottles? It occured to me when you were testing the Stella the other day. They'd certainly cut out light strike and might be a fairer test. Just a thought.
There’s a beer doing the rounds called Poretti. I was in Italy last year and had a pint of it, it was lovely. I’ve had it since in a uk pub, absolute slop! Just not the same drink at all.
Moretti in Italy is a lovely beer and they have many versions/strengths. The Peroni for me is too sweet, so quite the same to your thoughts. I honesty don't mind the UK brewed Moretti. It still hits the spot.
If the green glass is indeed causing the skunkiness, why wouldn't brewing companies stop using it? Is the green glass cheaper? Personally I don't give a rats ass how the bottle looks, only concerned about the contents.
I think it’s important to remember everyone’s taste experience and preference is going to always be different. And that’s what keeps new beer coming out the difference in what people like to drink and don’t like to drink. Personally I’ve had Peroni here in the UK on draft and in bottle and it’s not a later I enjoy, neither is Moretti, if anything my go to Italian(don’t knots hours Italian it really is in the uk) beer is Poretti
New Birra with Italian sea salt nicks it for me, better taste/has more to it and more refreshing feel.but your one here is older one. I tryed 00% peroni too,it's ok.
When in Italy, I mainly drink wine. But when reaching in the fridge for a light, generic supermarket beer bought as a thirst quencher after a long, hot day, Moretti is my choice. Nice label and proper bottles. A decent, tasty, fresh and unpretentious beer. Peroni can be OK on tap, bottles not so much. But there are smaller brands making really good beer in Italy now, as well as more seasonal, local traditions like birra alle castagne (brownish chestnut-beer, Corsica-style). Then add a very interesting micro scene with some stellar brews ready to surprise anyone with bold and often successful experimentation. Thinking outside the box is Italian and unlike the wine makers, brewers are «allowed» to go a bit off piste. Pricy, though.
@tobyjackman3212 Italy's beer industry is centuries old though. Parts of the North like Trieste and Verona were part of Austria for a few generations. You can find century old Italian Beer halls in places near Venice for example. There's a tendency to class italy as a wine region but it's important to see places like Verona are only a few hours drive from Munich. Even the more modern craft scene is older than most countries. Plenty of small brewers like Baladin were making IPA before the likes of Brewdog
Don't mind them both, peroni edges it for me though. But I love my german pilsners and budvar. Aldi for a budget quality bargain m&s for some german abk or paulaner, lidl for the bargain budvars!
Cheers from Italy 🇮🇹 Me and my boyfriend did a beer tasting with your video 😍 It was a lovely night! Have you tried the Peroni in the brown bottle? (it’s not Nastro Azzurro)
I worked for “Miller Brands UK” about 9 years ago who used to own the Peroni brand (now Asahi) Peroni is ONLY brewed in Italy in one of their 5 breweries, each bottle, can or keg has an identifier which relates to which brewery it came from.
Not a worthwhile comparison really when one of the 'Italian' beers is UK brewed. I'd almost give a point of respect to the Peroni for being brewed in Italy. I also think Henieken UK have done a good job with the Moretti - solid supermarket Lager.
Peroni Natro Azzurro (blue Peroni) is good, but original Peroni (red Peroni) from Italy is much better. Mercifully UK Peroni is still brewed in Italy. Completely disagree with you on this one Simon, Peroni is really dry, I'd say Moretti has the malty sweetness characteristic of Italian lagers. But yes, agree that Moretti is more rounded. Peroni I would say is very dry, very light, not much going on really. It tastes like the smell of hay, it's grassy.
Glad you are doing more of these comparison videos! The Italian original Moretti was my preferred Italian lager but they stopped importing it some time ago. The UK version is not bad for a UK brewed "fake foreign lager" and its quite cheap. Peroni is probably the best known Italian lager but my German friends always laugh at it! I'd buy a pint of Peroni if its on tap but I don't buy bottles for home. The Peroni Red Label (4.7%) is actually quite good and I prefer it to the Nastro Azzuro. Italy knows how to do wine not so much beer! I'd agree that Moretti is better.
I have definitely had some bad Peroni experiences, it seems to be quite variable in quality, some of it even out of a bottle or can just tastes "off", other times it is really good. At its best, one of my favourite lagers at its worst straight down the drain!
Both are poor, have drank them in the UK and Italy, not impressed. Tennants is a massive seller in Italy, just show you they don't have good taste when it comes to beer.
I’ve always loved peroni, but recently I discovered Poretti brewed near Milan at 5 abv the uk version is brewed by Carlsberg at 4.8 abv more hoppy and fuller flavour than Peroni. Give it a try 👍
Challenge, can you find us some nice continental beverages, that we might be able to get in an average shop, danke. Hint ( 3 for 5.50 in Tesco with clubcard, Paulaner lager 500 ml bottle, not the best, but better than most, in this country anyway )
Original brown bottle Peroni is much better than Nastro Azzurro, but as a general rule I'd only drink these on tap. I'd drink Moretti bottled or on tap though, it's more consistently of a higher standard.
Don't know if you got a bad bottle or what, but Peroni is my go-to lager here in the UK, both on draught and in bottles. The bottles from my local shops have never had skunkiness and the lager tastes very Italian and not noticeably "fiddled with" for the UK market. It's the only lager I drink in the UK. 😊 If you want to try a truly terrible lager, give ALDI's Peroni knock-off "Rossini" a go. (Have you already done a video, ALDI knock-offs vs. brands? Could be good.) 😊👍 I find Birra Moretti has a weird "baked bean" smell and aftertaste which I have also experienced with some of the Polish lagers. Don't know what causes it, but Craft Beer Channel have also discussed its baked bean flavour.
As is most, I challenge you to compare brewdogs lost lager to peroni... there are levels to this game and sadly peroni just isn't that good. The itelians don't even drink it and if they do, they're not drinking UK brewed peroni. Peroni and moerrti is for basic bitches that lack refinement... get yourself a track beer or a cloudwater and be done with that crap
If you get a chance to drink red lable Peroni you will probably find that its closer to Moretti than Blue Lable Peroni. It’s also cheaper too in Italy. Last month I was paying 0.85 euro’s in Italian supermarket's for a 750ml bottle. They have lowered the alcohol in Italian bottled Moretti too, its now 4.6 as opposed to 5%. Still like Moretti but if they mess about with it much more it won’t be worth buying. Ten years ago at 5% and brewed in Italy it was head and sholders above the competition.
Moretti was good until the early 2000s, then in my opinion they (heineken) increased production having 3 new breweries, after massive tele advertising and sponsoring events, but losing quality. Nastro Azzurro (which you should not merely call Peroni, since a Peroni is a way more popular lager in brown bottles of 75cc, 66cc and 33cc) is a pilsener and is bottled only in Rome ( renown for the good waters). Prices, circa, in norden Italy: Moretti 66cc 1,20 € Nastro Azzurro 50cc 1,30 € I guess the Moretti brewery in the UK may make a better beer than the ones we have here, and the light strike in the NA had hindered the comparison. I prefer the Nastro Azzurro 'cause it's more bitter and better all around, justifying the higher price.
I completely disagree regarding moretti brewed by Heineken in Tadcaster as even the Italians admit that the Heineken Tadcaster brew us better than their Italian brew. This is because of the special "grimston" well that the Heineken brewery owns, which has better water. I was drinking moretti in Scilly recently and can definitely say it wasn't as good as from Tadcaster, England!!
I am a beer man, as well as high-end spirits! I have drunk hundreds if not I dread to think brands, types and strengths. I only drink the authentic stuff, and not the fake stuff made in UK, etc! I can tell an authentic Birra Moretti as I know the taste, as have been drinking for over 30 years! About two years back, I ordered in a Wetherspon's, only to spit out on the first mouthful. I checked the label to find the now standard, brewed in UK, on the back label. so checked other Birra Moretti in shops, etc, to find that only the boxed cans were authentic. Unfortunately, They are now fake, so have to source from Italian shops, and specialist beer sellers, etc. It is not impossible, if you look around,
Not sure which one is the best between the two ,but Peroni has more of a name for us Italians. Peroni means Italy more than Moretti does. Cheers from Florence Italy.
I got a 66cl Peroni red label at the bottle from Italy and there is no comparison between the white label and green bottle from Europe ... I mention that the Italy Peroni is in a brown bottle ! The italian one is waaaay sweeter and good !
If Peroni was ABInbev it would be on the PD already, sadly though it will never make it on there as it's licensed by Molson Coors. They frequently sue Abinbev over corn syrup
I have to say I bought a box of 12 Moretti recently having never tried it. It was far too sweet for me and once again a disappointing it brewed continental lager.
Mind you, you weren't entirely wrong - up until 2015 Peroni was an InBev subsidiary, but it got sold off to Asahi when they wanted to buy SABMiller, since the European antitrust wouldn't let them go through with the purchase for fear of a monopoly on European beer.
These are NOT Italian lagers and it is wrong to call them such. I have the right to a British passport as I was born here - so were these beers and they are as British as you or I. The only Italian bit is the claim on the label which is intended to deceive the unwitting.
It's a sham that M&S stopped stocking that "Italian mountain lager" a few years ago. That was MUCH better than either of these. A really lovely crisp lager..... oh, well....
Unfortunately Peroni have reduced their AVB from 5.1% to 5.0%. It also now has corn syrup added to it. Was a really good supermarket larger, not anymore. Get the Peroni Gran Reserver, much better quality.
Real Italian Moretti is FAR, FAR superior. They established a footplace in the UK market with the Italian brewed version, in the 2000s, and then started brewing it under license in the UK with predictable results. I would give UK Moretti 5/10, and Italian Moretti 9/10
This is just down to personal taste as neither is real quality beer . Morretti more hoppy so bitter , which is. Nice , peroni more modern lager for beginners
So if you buy green bottled lager, its best to buy when in a case (box of 12 for example)? No lightstrike?
Peroni is basically "italy" here in italy.
A trademark.
Anyway for the german beer lovers, there are much beers produced in northern italy regions like trentino alto adige ( italian part of sudtirol) that are similar to german beers
I like Moretti but it lists hop extract on label, could this be syrup?
Peroni red is what the Italians drink, the nastro azzurro is made for the export market. Interestingly peroni red is in a brown bottle
Yeah recently brought a crate of 24 peroni reds from Costco

Neither are still not a patch on Budvar. Which in my opinion is still the best Lager widely available in the Uk.
Bottled Budvar(green bottle) is inferior to Canned Budvar.
Great video Simon. I recently stopped buying green bottles unless they're in packaging. I had a skunky Staropramen a few weeks ago and it put me right off. I even now pull bottles off the back of the shelf away from the supermarket lights 😁

I love the proper Red Peroni above all other Italian lager. Malty goodness
I prefer menebrea to either of those if I'm having Italian lager. Mind the moretti bafo-doro on the sub is very nice.

I describe it as something from a chemical plant

How can they put L’Authentica on the Moretti label when it’s brewed in the UK….are they shipping water across from Italy……
The uk Heineken brewed moretti is better then the Italian brewed as the Tadcaster grimston well produces a better water for beer. Even the Italian beer drinkers agree!
Would you do a bottle vs can review of the same drink - personally I find I prefer cans, but interested in your take on it
I’d like to see staropramen vs pilsner urquell these “vs” videos are pretty interesting
Urquell hands down
The staropramen sold in the UK is brewed under licence in Burton upon Trent. It is a pale comparison from the product sold in the Czech Republic.

Better water from a new well at UK brewery apparently.
Had really good Peroni on draught; not that great in bottles. Moretti seems pretty identical draft bottled or even canned, so it's good for the house.

(Have you already done a video, ALDI knock-offs vs. brands? Could be good.) 😊👍
I find Birra Moretti has a weird "baked bean" smell and aftertaste which I have also experienced with some of the Polish lagers. Don't know what causes it, but Craft Beer Channel have also discussed its baked bean flavour.
Guarantee he wouldn’t have picked up on the skunkiness in a blind test
Asahi is much nicer than all those. Clean, crisp and dry.
He has done the Aldi knock off vs the original. Aldi often wins.
I think he has.
I remember the lidl Moretti knock off fared pretty well
As is most, I challenge you to compare brewdogs lost lager to peroni... there are levels to this game and sadly peroni just isn't that good. The itelians don't even drink it and if they do, they're not drinking UK brewed peroni.
Peroni and moerrti is for basic bitches that lack refinement... get yourself a track beer or a cloudwater and be done with that crap
Is it possible that Peroni has more corn in it than Birra Moretti? That would cause the notable sweetness.
I've always thought larger taste better out of a can , same with peroni ,
Have you done a review on Angelo Poretti ? Better beer than these two IMO
Prices, circa, in norden Italy: Moretti 66cc 1,20 € Nastro Azzurro 50cc 1,30 €
I guess the Moretti brewery in the UK may make a better beer than the ones we have here, and the light strike in the NA had hindered the comparison.
@@Loveisgod54321 You agree with me, since I wrote "I guess the Moretti brewery in the UK may make a better beer than the ones we have here"
I'm Italian and have tasted both of these beers in Italy, for me, Moretti just wins, but Peroni Red is also excellent.
Why are they putting beer in green bottles? Maybe it looks better in green?
Otherwise it doesn't make any sense. Green bottles is a no go.
Peroni is like the only drinkable lager with all this uk brewed rubbish around
There is loads of brilliant craft brewed Uk lager about.
I checked the label to find the now standard, brewed in UK, on the back label. so checked other
Birra Moretti in shops, etc, to find that only the boxed cans were authentic.
Unfortunately, They are now fake, so have to source from Italian shops, and specialist beer sellers,
etc.
I've been going for bottles of Ashai after work - very refreshing. Be good to see an updated review for the Japanese lager if you come across any!
Good luck finding one brewed in Japan. A few years ago I had a great one brewed in the Czech Republic! I think their basic stuff is now all UK brewed.
I like the Birra Morretti, It’s a good lager. I haven’t had the Peroni, who are owned by Asahi which also own the Grolsch beerbrand.
Prefer peroni myself. Wont touch any lager with glucose syrup in (birra moretti)
I like a Moretti and I like the Angelo Poretti also 😎 cheers🍻
Nice one. I concur, Peroni too sweet for me.
Mind you, you weren't entirely wrong - up until 2015 Peroni was an InBev subsidiary, but it got sold off to Asahi when they wanted to buy SABMiller, since the European antitrust wouldn't let them go through with the purchase for fear of a monopoly on European beer.
Green bottle is already a bad sign.
Same old words i like your content but all beer that u like is described with the same exact same words
Peroni in cans to me anyway tastes quite abit different, better as it hasn't skunked.
Peroni says airport lounge to me. And splitting headache.
Peroni over Moretti for me
Personally don’t like either, but I’d probably take Moretti over Peroni if I really had to pick
Unfortunately Peroni have reduced their AVB from 5.1% to 5.0%. It also now has corn syrup added to it.
Was a really good supermarket larger, not anymore.
Get the Peroni Gran Reserver, much better quality.
Tough decision, both great beers. I prefer Peroni. I think the Moretti in Italy tastes exactly the same as the UK beer
Real beer drinkers in Italy stay away from both of them
That’s cos they’re too busy necking Tennent’s Super.
I'm not self destructive 😉
same for me i prefer the moretti.
Didier Peroni not just good at F1 but also Beers too lol
Real Italian Moretti is FAR, FAR superior. They established a footplace in the UK market with the Italian brewed version, in the 2000s, and then started brewing it under license in the UK with predictable results. I would give UK Moretti 5/10, and Italian Moretti 9/10
This is just down to personal taste as neither is real quality beer . Morretti more hoppy so bitter , which is. Nice , peroni more modern lager for beginners
Peroni is piss, moretti is ok, german lager all the way, becks is nice, but a warsteiner or dab is perfect.
Have you ever tried badger ales?
A bottle of ice cold korev beats both of those
