After clearing out my late mom’s belongings, I use an easy, albeit slow, method for those sentimental items you only see when decluttering.
I take one item and simply put it out in the open. Use it to decorate my living room for a week or just set it on my dresser for a couple days. For one, it’s nice to have the visual reminder of the attached memory for a while. But more importantly, once I get used to seeing it out ALL the time I’m able to determine if I actually like it for what it is, or if I only liked the hit of nostalgia I got when I opened that old box.
9 times out of 10 I’m able to let that thing go before too long. The few things that I did keep (her Buddha, a candle holder, her favorite tea pot) now decorate my home and I get to enjoy them daily.
Your channel has become one of my favorites, Elin. I often find myself motivated to tidy up while watching/listening to a video of yours, so thank you! 😊

I don't understand how there have been 240 views of this vlog and only 84 have given the thumbs up? I see this on other vlogs I follow too. Seems like if you watch any vlog, you should at least support these channels and give some feedback.

sometimes there is a glitch in the tally. i've had days when YT tells me every video i've watched had the same number of "likes"

I’m not always able to respond - I listen but I do stuff while I listen - and when I can I do. People might be watching/listening in snippets or on a play all setting in their feed. It may not help the algorithm but I also can’t always watch within the first hour or even the first 24 hours. The algorithm may be tallying people who glanced briefly and scrolled on or accidentally clicked on the video. But a good reminder anyway

"Declutter the things you only come across when decluttering." Um, wow. That's a GREAT way to think about it! 🙌🤯

Hi Elin. I'm a new subscriber and I'm moving with my husband from a 2 bedroom apartment to a one bedroom. The purging has been painful as it's mostly nostalgia items (and of course furniture and storage from the 2nd room) because we're mostly living small already. I cried buckets over some of my things that I regarded as precious. Now, as I watch this, I realize that my stored memorabilia was only looked at when we were actually decluttering! That was an AHA moment. It was hard to give things away, but now that many items are gone, I'm realizing that I'm no longer missing them, when I thought I'd be grieving forever! (I guess I'm a bit of a drama queen! 🙄) Thank you for this idea-filled video for living small and happy. I'll be looking through your other content when my drama ends. xo karen

Your decluttering by size tip reminded me of some decluttering I did awhile ago. I was having a hard time getting my husband on board with decluttering but I told him I was going to start weighing everything we declutter. I even put a bathroom scale in the garage to weigh everything. He really got into it. The dog house for the dog we no longer had went. Then he decided to take down the trampoline the kids no longer used. (I am not sure how he weighed it but he did.) Finally he decided to get rid of an old car. He looked up how much it weighed and reported the weight to me with a proud smile on his face. Getting rid of big things really can have a lot of impact and in my case it even helped my husband warm up to the idea of decluttering.

I have been weighing my decluttered stuff for several years now and it's sooo motivating. Even though I am in maintenance mode I declutter 30-50 kg each year (65-110 lbs). It's only my stuff and shared items (like kitchen stuff), not my partner's things. We don't have kids yet and I usually don't bother to count and weigh stuff that is only replaced anymore (for example when I buy a new pair of socks to replace some with holes, I don't count and weigh the decluttered pair). So if you have a family or a big home or are just starting out this can be way, way more!
I highly recommend it for everyone who loves to track their progress.

I had some oversized luggage stored in a small closet with clothing items I was not wearing. Everytime I had to take it out and go through it the walls would get all scuffed. I painted and reorganized the closet. I ordered a biocarbonate carry on piece and took the other luggage set with the clothing in it to a donation center. Best decision.

I love the clear storage idea. I like having all my clothes out all year because I may want to layer things so I use a cloth bin with see through windows on it. I don’t have an actual entryway with much space for storage by my front door and I don’t wear shoes in the house so right inside my door from the garage I put a tiny wall shelf with magnets on the bottom for keys with a shelf space on top big enough for sunglasses and chapstick and just below is a small cushion bench with 2 drawers where I can put shoes.

I really like the idea of the low storage under windows. I want to try that in my living room where I have bay windows. I never want to block the light or the view outside, but the extra closed storage for pillows, blankets, etc. would be great. Also, I have learned that if I don’t keep things in storage viewable I might as well get rid of them. If I cannot see them I forget they exist. 🤣 Thanks for the great tips. ❤

I didn't even know collapsable luggage was a thing. Goes to show how much I don't travel. Vertical storage in small spaces makes a huge difference. I hang my trivet on the wall when not in use, have a magnetic strip for my knives, and keep my tea bags in a basket hanging from a wall. It acts as decor as well as storage.
