Gratitude, yes!! Homeless in our town have been living in tents. The first time I drove by & saw the tents and thought of the people who lived in them, and it was a cold day, left me a little shaken. When I pulled up to our house I was so grateful to have a home, knowing that things can happen in life unexpectedly. With groceries, rent & everything else so expensive now, many people can’t afford their rent of find a place to live. I’ve been donating, decluttering & selling all our excess. I’m late 50’s & we don’t need it & I would love for someone else to have it.

One thing I actually find to help not have the urge to shop… scanning through Pinterest to find outfits that I like that include pieces I already own! I save them in a folder. So when I need inspiration ideas for ‘new’ outfits to put together, I look in my folder. It’s gives me the sense of having a ‘new’ outift, but I don’t need to shop because I already own those pieces. I just needed a different idea/way of styling them up!! It’s been a lot of fun to do this!

I’m now 2 months of a low buy and it’s going really well. Ive stayed true to not buying off of Amazon, cloths, makeup, decor. I feel I’ve broken that shopping urge significantly. I haven’t scrolled the shopping apps much and when I do, it doesn’t last long and I don’t feel the same gratification anymore. In fact I find myself asking “what am I even scrolling for” and then I stop. I feel like I have control again.
I realized how much I underestimated the power of social media, the ads, the influences and I really need to be more selective and restrictive on my time on the media and what content I view/engage in. I’ve gain more awareness of when social media is no longer a tool but is hindering me and that is a big lesson I’ve learned throughout my low buy so far.
Wishing everyone the best on their journey if you’re on a no/low buy too!!

Your video is on point. I have found gratitude is amazing! Throughout my cancer journey, my heart was very overwhelmed, and some slogans folks had were terrible. Cancer is a battle, a war, and not pretty...but my gratitude helped me think...my joy is not surviving but thriving. Minimalism has the same power...to cause ugly thoughts..but let the Joy of what you have thrived...not survive. I also have a capsule wardrobe and am in the process of losing weight ...some cancer patients gain..not lose. So I have been appreciative of the pieces I have worn and then when the new size arrives...I have no regrets...the pieces were used to the max.
I also find if I go out on the porch, look out the window, or go on a drive, I am less likely to frequent the stores and not be on my phone as much. The digital decluttering does take time, but now I don't receive the ads I once did. This has helped me notice my budget and spend less. Thanks for sharing!

Your video is on point. I think people now spend more than what they earn. Social media is making everyone wanting to live luxury. If you have enough, you spend because nobody knows when heave calls but if not always try to save and be prudent. Invest more to earn more. Thanks for the great video.

I totally agree with you. In our young ages, our parents always teach us the propose of savings and investing, and then there were no internet to read about it. But now that the world has become internet world that the youth should capitalize with it and learn how to be making more money and save more, they don't watch such channels rather they prefer to be watching channels that showcase expensive lifestyles.

People still spend and still live comfortable. For me I think with good investment scheme, you can live your life in full, without being bothered. Planning has everything to do in life.

I’m doing a no buy year this year and it’s definitely challenging! I’m learning a lot about when and why I shop impulsively which is great, but I’ve also had some unexpected needs crop up which is a bit deflating. I love this list of yours as it has some new perspectives as well as foundational truths. Thank you!

I’m doing this as well!! Before purchasing a “want”, I ask myself if I want the item or the money it would cost to have this item. And I’ll end up choosing to keep the money in my account! That really helps curve my impulse buys to help me stay on track financially.

This year is low buy for me. I have a small notebook where I write down everything that comes across my screen that I want. It sort of satisfies that consumer urge without acting upon it. It allows me to think that when the time comes that I have some budget breathing room then I can look at this list and see if I still want these things and then consider buying them.

This video is perfect timing. I’m aiming to go into February and March as no buy months. For some reason, I’ve been feeling a sense of scarcity and this has led me to buy duplicates! Buying an extra lotion for when I run out of my favorite, an extra duvet cover because I love the color and what if they stop making it. It’s wild! I’m trying to stop, shift, and reflect: thanks for your video!

I'm sure you already know that bad habits don't take long to form, but to break them takes an average of 21 to 30 days, depending on the person. So yeah, the shopping addictions can be broken if you stay out of stores and away from technology. Journaling and writing down your blessings help to remind of us how much we have, and being aware of those less fortunate keeps us more grounded.

I think you gave some good tips for reducing the urge to shop. I have used the decluttering and delay to refocus. I also will tell myself instead of buying something that is likely not going to serve me in a truly beneficial way I should eat something healthy, do some physical exercise, read a book of substance, or do something to connect with people. If I were to continue to use my time and other resources in that way I would be healthier in mind and body.

I’d be very interested to know more about the psychology of a no-buy year! And even more interested to know about other methods to get in control of one’s own spending. The no-buy is where I think RUclips overall is showing just one way, one trend, and I can’t imagine that it’s the best method. The tough tactics you show in this video - they are the way forward. Many small changes in behaviour that you keep up over years and years, with determination. For a shopper, one year goes by, and then you reward yourself…or?

Great video! My one tip would be to cancel Amazon Prime! I would put items in my cart and see they won't be delivered for a week or more (instead of overnight) then I realized maybe I really don't need it. Sort of a variation on the delay approach too :)

Your suggestions here are great Elin, thank you! We need 'intention' behind what we do~ In the past my no buy/low buy was unsuccessful because I did not have reasons/goals/intention behind it; which is critical if you want to change a habit. -Instead, what I did was "not" buy anything that week/month, but the next wk/mo I went and got what I deprived myself of before : ( Ugh. Know your WHY!! I'm doing better as I practice minimalism w/my reasons clearly in place! : ) I appreciate your channel (& the comments) so much!

I knit. It keeps my hands busy and I end up with a nice creation at the end of it. I've also found that putting things in my online shopping cart and leaving them there helps. I feel like I'm gathering the things I want, so I don't forget them, but then when I think I'll go ahead and buy something off Amazon a few months later, I find that most of the things in my cart, I no longer want.

One potential video idea I would love to see (if you want to do it ,of course) are minimalist habits/hobbies that require minimal equipment, or routines that allign with our core values & drive our minimal lifestyles/keep it afloat. I hope this made sense!

Funny you should say that about Amazon 😂 I lost count of the “you might be interested in” this last couple of weeks. My delivery guy is getting worried about me because he has only been here a couple of times versus minimum of every other day. While I thought a “no spend” was too strict for me to jump in head first for the first time and allowed myself a “low spend” instead but I have noticed that because I have gave myself permission, I am just not as interested in buying.

It goes hand in hand with gratitude, but giving can help us not to spend. Anytime we get outside of ourselves and our little world and focus on the unmet needs of others, it gives us such a perspective shift. All of a sudden a 20th sweater or a new kitchen gadget just seems silly.

These are all great tips! I like the gratitude tip and the one about distracting ourselves with something else, like looking up real estate listings or playing a game on our phone instead of clicking the buy button. One thing I’m sadly discovering is the pain of buying something and then having to return because it’s the wrong size or in one case, I got one brand and found out after I should have gotten a different one. It would have been easy to not buy at all or waited for better information to make the correct choice. The wrong size clothes are from a place that gives store credit, not refunds 🙁. I should know better - I’m in the process of decluttering after all! This was a timely reminder! Thank you!

I just want to live in your house, Elin. It's so light and green and beautiful 😍
It's not ironic to me that the only ads I i got during this video were for Temu, which I've never shopped at, but is exactly what's wrong with our society these days. Cheap stuff we can get fast but that end up in a landfill 😢
Gratefulness and just using what I have helps a lot, as well as keeping my house really tidy. I don't want to mess it up with more stuff!

Very thought-provoking video. I’ve started an ultra low-buy year for my yarn-based hobbies. I cheated a little by ordering something at the end of 2023, and it arrives tomorrow, but that should be the last thing that arrives here until much later in the year. I’m allowing myself one ‘treat’ in the autumn, provided I don’t buy anything else before that time. Goals. 😊 I’ve been using the dream list since you mentioned it in a previous video. It does help in setting purchases aside while I think about how much I really want or need them.

Good afternoon on this gorgeous Sunday 01/21/2024 @ 12:12pm here in Southern Indiana, Bloomington Home of the Indiana Hoosiers! I like all your tips, they are all good. Mine is Delay, Delay, Delay, I find if I can Delay til payday bye the time payday comes I no longer care to purchase the item. I also find myself deciding which is more important, let me explain, a couple weeks ago the Organic Market I shop at had their big 33% off Vitamins & Beauty. I am big on skincare, haircare, nailcare fanatic! so this is typically when I stock up on my favs, a cleanser (2-3) of my fav, deodorant (2-3), haircare oils (1-2), and some vitamins, I spend about $200 easily but I feel it is worth it. Now I've been wanting to try an Exfoliator from a line that is not sold at my local store, so it was an online purchase, & yes I bought it, am very happy, it was a pricey purchase but I feel worth it. Now I did not make a single purchase at my local store. I will wait til April when they will have it again. They have it 4x's a year July & October are the other months. Am gonna be 60 in April and have worked on less buying for years now & minimalism. I believe its a daily thing I personally have worked on over the years, and yes I've gotten better at it. But it is a very hard habit to break.
