Reserva Punta Curiñanco (about 20 km NW of Valdivia)
0:29 Red-legged Cormorant (Phalocrocorax gaimardi) breeding colony
0:49 Blackish Oystercatcher (Haematopus ater) pair. As the adult moves to the side,
note the perfectly camouflaged chick.
1:06 Neotropic Cormorant (P. brasilianus) drying its wings, perched with Turkey Vultures (Cathartes aura). Turkey Vultures soaring in the mist.
Reserva Valdiviana Sendero los Colmillos (about 40 km SW of Valdivia)
1:40 Imperial Cormorants (Phalocrocorax atriceps) and Peruvian Pelican (Pelecanus thagus)
2:11 Colony of Southern Sea Lions at Huiro, Costa de Corral. This is the South American Sea Lion (Otaria flavescens), also known as Patagonian Sea Lion. The huge 350 kg adult males are about the twice the size of females. There was a massive nonstop flight of cormorants along the coast, streaming low across the water in the background. Not sure what species, but most likely Neotropic Cormorants. Long-horned Beetle (Acanthinodera cumingii) at 2:58. This beetle is endemic to central Chile and goes by the name Madre de la Culebra (mother of the snake). The female is black (as shown) and at 9 cm in length is one of the largest beetles in Chile.
