Thanks for posting this! I've been a vet tech for years, but can't sleep tonight b/c I am starting a new job and I just want to be perfect at the job in the morning. I just needed a refresher, and now I feel a little better and I think I can sleep :) Thanks!
this is a very mellow cat. my cat needed to be swaddled and muzzled when getting nails and blood work done. I think it depends on their personality and how they were raised. I didn't socialize my cat or make her comfortable with holding paws as much as I should have.
super video! Im taking a vet tech program online, and the only problem is that a text book doesnt give a very good visual explanation, this help me so much. Thanks.
Their trust must be 'earned' and that's what I had to do with one or our birds we rescued to gain his trust and pet him and talk to him quietly and stimulate him with toys, smells, and fav foods/treats. I first got him used to me and to know me and handling him gently. Time is what you baby needs and to be reassured and comforted. My vet tells me 'less is more' and to gently hold but securely. I even make a purring sound just like a cat so they know I am friendly, I know it's funny.
i feel the cat jugular isn't much different from a very small dog, as long as the restraint/positioning is correct. also, we always go to the jugular first to save the cephalic veins for IVC
You see, I have drawn blood samples on even my birds awake. I sent them off myself. I currently work with small animals like cats and dogs, though I've had a few experiences working with exotics, but nothing huge. Cats just don't like to be restrained and some are wary of strangers and being poked & prodded, don't blame them, it can be scary for cats in clinics, dogs too. He may need to be allowed to calm down & petted, securely but gently restraining him before the procedure is done.
Hi thanks for this video. Can you help me....? my Persian 18 year old crf cat really needs new blood work doing and he just will not let them touch him. Please do you have any advice ?? I dont want him sedated anymore with ketamine or other stuff. He's become SO senstive to meds. I've seem this video and will watch it again and again but do you have any tips for a very very aggressive yet delicate crf kitty?
Hi vet folks! Can anyone tell me, what would be the primary location for a blood draw? We are going to do it at home (my husband is a human doctor) as our senior cat is semi feral, and we want to keep him comfortable. Tips? We are conditioning him with restraint positions and the use of positive reinforcement (cat treats and hugs)
I'm usually good with cats, though once there was one at the clinic that was at the front of the cage and jumping at the cage anytime you went by. The ones at the back of the cage that are more fear-aggressive can by adequately restrained without sedation. You just have to wrap a towel around your hands. Sedation is supposed to be only used when all methods have failed. Blood can be drawn from the medial femoral vein on the inside of the leg. And Persians have enough scruff to restrain them
This was definitely the most informative cat restraint video that I found. Perfect demonstration :)
that is an unusually mellow cat.

"Duuuude. pet me. Don't stab me, pet me."

This is a ragdoll, isn't it? Those have built-in tranquilizers.
That cat was waaaaaaaaaaaaay too calm. Amazing.

my cat has had some pretty traumatic vet experiences. when my cat needs bloodwork, they knock her out with happy gas first.

That cat is either high or sedated, look at it's eyes, the eyelids are coming up from the bottom.
