This right here. I have money for sets but no space to build a city or theme park (what I really want). I only have space to build standalone stuff in a display cabinet in the corner of a room
I have over 200 lego sets even the special series. I made a big city but I cant realy connect it, bc I have a lot of shelfs, but only one table where is train. Do u have any tips?
Is there not enough space to build the city on the train table? I feel like having a train going around the city is a great visual. Otherwise, you have to work in the space you are given. See if there is a creative way to rearrange the room so that all the lego can be in one central location.
Honestly great tips for someone like me who is just starting out making my own City. I think my number one tip is use the LEGO City sets first. @@nathanward1099 it means Modular Integrated Landscape System. It's a method of making baseplates which go together, you can lookup tutorials on how to make MILS plates

I especially like a lot of these 3in1 buildings from the late 2010s till now which are amazingly compatible with each other. There's a video by Jangbricks called "The Joy of Small LEGO buildings... This is a great video! Here are my thoughts on all 5 points: 1: Small definitely works well. Pretty much all of my city buildings are either from City, Creator, or custom built. I don’t have a single modular set, and I don’t really want any, because I would much rather use that 32x32 space for multiple smaller and simpler buildings. 2: Another plus side to building the alternate builds in Creator sets is getting more pieces. I remember getting a gigantic caravan set and opting to build the alternate lighthouse build instead. I had a decent supply of parts after that, including some doors I could use in custom buildings. 3: I’ve tried to make backings for some of my buildings, but I don’t tend to do it too often. 4: Another good place to look is yard sales. They are basically the best place to get cheap Lego if you don’t care what you get. Granted, you might end up with a lot of stuff from series’s you don’t care about, but you could also find good sets to use in your city, like when I found a Classic house and a Friends bakery in my most recent haul. 5: Even though I mostly use official Lego, I do think baseplates are the best thing to go bootlego on. My winter village uses bootlego baseplates for instance.
I got the small creator toy store building and a "starbucks" Coffeeshop ^^ .. for now its just a street with these two buildings .. XD .. But please .. never buy lego full retail.. just whait a few weeks (or sometimes even days ) for 20-30% discount .. should also keep the cost down ..
Another thing to consider for those on a budget. Is the 4+ series. I know a lot of fans hate them for the solid single piece bases, and for being to simple and kiddy. But it can be a cheap way to get some nice cute vehicles, figures, and accessories for your city.
Look I am a big fan of a lego but the problem is I don’t have so much city sets I love lego ninja go that’s a problem I do have fire brigade and some more sets I have a lot of fake lego pieces is it ok to use it on a real lego sets I wish I have a way to show you my legos wait I have the same set that you have the fire bridge and the stacking one
Any subscribers are more than welcome to send me pics on my Instagram @newbrickerton, I'd love to see it! I think it's fine to combine Lego and non-Lego, some people disagree but it's personal preference. It's all about what you make it!
Tip nr 5 is debatable, I would not consider other brands, but that's me. The others are 100% accurate, I would suggest only to refer the Pick & Brick Wall if you have a LEGO store close to you. Cheap and excellent value for the quantity and parts you have accessible.
I am getting overwhelmed trying to design my city. I have a bunch of Harry Potter sets, Jurassic World, Prince of Persia and then some old castle sets and the black pearl. All my ideas are in my head and hard to visualize in real life. I don't really have a big area, just two card tables and a really long work bench. This video is helpful, but are their any other words of encouragement. Thank you for the info and have a great evening.
It takes time. You won't have a city you are super proud of over night, just gotta start somewhere. Besides your jurassic world sets, seems like you'd have a good setup for an old world / medieval setup to start with. You can start with a nice MOC or small improvements to your current sets before thinking too much about the overall city. Hope that helps, hard to say much more without seeing all your sets
It does thank you. That is exactly what I am going for a musketeer/medieval them with witches and wizards. For Christmas I got the Sanderson Sister cottage and was pretty much going to set it up next to the harry potter stuff. Thanks again and once I get some sort of layout I will send you a couple of pictures.@@NewBrickerton
saying that The LEGO brick is better in any category than their competitors is simply not true ... ANYMORE, brands like Xingbhao, Cobi, Mould King and BlueBrixx (more of a shop that uses one of the other brands bricks to sell MOCs as sets) are conquering the market very fast, and Lego certainly is having issues in parts quality, colour consistency on certain coloured bricks and much more. So saying that lego sets and / or The LEGO brick as a whole is much better than the competition is simply not true anymore, lego just tries to sell less for more money and it has become very obvious over the last couple of years...
I love this comment, you are speaking my language man. I didn't really know Legos were having issues honestly. I haven't tried any of those brands but i will check them out!
hay yar. yes my hole city is built from lay buy and slowly paying of sets and face book sale sight to collector and from Lego group. to Lego shop delivers. but I never blow lots $ at one s .I have amazed my salf. the task I set. and slowly Goten their. in few years of collecting. Manny sets to modular s. 😊 .
In my opinion, the old road plates are a lot better looking than the new ones. Also, the MILS plates are overrated. I understand they are useful in some situations, but they are a big waste of good bricks.
Totally valid. I know a lot of people aren't fans of the new road plates. I never had any before the new ones, so I went with these. I totally agree on MILS too actually. As I build my city out, I really found myself wanting to add more detail than what typical baseplates make easy so I really like the idea of MILS. But, for the average person, MILS is way too expensive and part intensive to be viable. It's going to take me a LONG time to fully get into the MILS system, for sure. My thing is I don't really use 2x2 bricks very often in bulk, so MILS is good to put those extra parts to use. Thanks for the comments Jeremy!
Hello, I just found and subscribed to your channel. Great tips. My son who's 6 and I want to start a small Lego village. we only have around 50ish sq ft to work with at the moment. Smart idea to start small and to not get overwhelmed with wanting the larger modular builds.
i feel like you should talk more about the space you need for a lego city or yours in general i have been building a city for a long time so i use these tips you mention they are so helpful. aka please dont say my name during a video if you announce comments for your channel
Good point, I've gotten a few comments like this saying I should talk about space requirements. I should address this in a future video. No worries, I won't say your name. Thanks for the comment!!
you can buy copy's of older sets on chinese webshops its cheaper than try to buy them from other people and for show who cares? just don't buy sets from china that lego still sells
I did not have that much Lego when I was a kid and as I got older I wanted to create a town or cityscape. I reduced the scale so my city looked more realistic and the need to use every last piece drove creativity. I wish I had a big empty garage and thousands of bricks because I would be building my own mini New York.
I have been building my city for like 1-2 years but have never been to serious about it since all the good Lego buildings are super expensive and I agree with off brand Lego websites. I started looking at off brand website a month ago and it made me start to get serious about my city like I got a very nice coffee shop that was 2 story’s tall and a full plate size big for about $80 and it had super good interior. Idky lego doesn’t sell their stuff for cheaper with how cheap other people sell their stuff.
Looking for a hobby, model RR just too expensive to convert to DCC. I like puzzles too. I'm subscribing. For those upset abt tip 5, the video is how to do a lego city cheap. You can ignore the tip or only use in substructure where it isn't seen, just like using foam instead of Lego parts. Anyway, not ready to try yet, I have a few kits like the British bridge and Big Ben, but I like the idea of Lego trains and building a city around them and your tips help because it ain't cheap and like you said seeing these huge cities on RUclips is discouraging.
The tips will work, but the only cost for Minecraft is the game. You can make a tiny city or a big city for the same cost :D Minecraft is better than lego in that regard my friend but thank you for watching. I liked the avenged sevenfold song on your channel

I think one point needed is how "buy only what is needed" like remeber your old small off brand naval carrier which now has no purpose in the lego city since it doesent fit the city vibes/theme around
That's a very good point. I have a full shelf of sets that I haven't used. Maybe if people are interested I can do a part 2, as I've already realized a few things I left out of the video. The naval ship actually became the base for the town sign as well as the Grey building the avengers tower sits on at the moment, so tip# 2: use what you have also applies here. Thanks as always!

Just wanted to pop in to tell everyone here that you dont have to buy Lego specifically there is a TON of good city themed sets from other brands(which are also not copying lego or doing anything illegal at all) you can start out with. For indiviudal bricks there literally is no better quality than Gobricks, cheaper than buying equivalent legi pieces and the quality is superior(specifically color consistency)
Iv actually been planning my city and tho im not making it small im making it relitivly big and i cant buy stuff online or have a lwgo store near by over the years i have collected those so i have quite a variety of parts funny enough aside from doing the planning for the start im working on a island mostly brown nugget and tan colored which will be the citys dump island lol
Man when i found out that the lego Passenger plane, Lego Police station, and lego chima sets that i had back in my childhood were rare, that just made me depressed. Aint no way they're sitting in some landfill now in a garbage bag instead of built in my room. Damn myself. (This was like 2012. Just goes to show you how fast lego sets become inaccessible.)
Thank you!! I just took a look at the pieces and arranged them in a way I thought looked good (lame answer I know). I used just a few extra pieces besides what was in the truck. It might be a good idea for me to do a video on how to build that ice cream shop while that set is still available to buy!
Ha! I'm a user of kmart baseplates. Ground level of my layout is two bricks high then normal lego building base plates. You'll never see them. Only non lego I use though - happy to cut them and stuff. I use duplo for foundation stuff - save heaps of bricks. 👍🏻
Yessir, other brands will make ya $ go way further.. think about it; do you want a city OR do you want every brick to be say “LEGO”? Don’t get lost in the leaves you won’t see the tree, n don’t get lost in the tree you won’t see the forest. 🔥 video
You forgot to mention Aliexpress. The prices are even cheaper, and the abundance of designs and shapes is so great. Ok, the quality is not so good. But I got some extra rails for my son's Lego train, and all turned out to be fine (not perfect, but fine!), and we managed to extend our Lego railways with new possible configurations. Thanks for the video!
Sorry, but as to non-Lego brands... No, I will never buy them. I have found them to be too cheaply made and they don't hold up/together or actually fit like real Lego.
Similarly, if you want to start a LEGO city, think why. Is LEGO really the best medium for your creative project? Does LEGO have an undying, nostalgic and wondrous effect on you that it simply MUST be LEGO, in that case, the justification for your spending is moot, and you'll just have to buy the sets. If you're looking for the creative freedom, modularity, colourful aesthetics, or pre-built/pre-fab notions that LEGO has for you, but are open to other things, then consider mini-scale building e.g. Dungeons & Dragons terrain/tables. You could consider model trains, or buy plastic scale kits from brands which provide shop fronts, vehicles, and people. All these extra considerations not only significantly reduce cost, but they can open up creativity, DIY, and provide a more realistic aesthetic for your project.
I absolutely appreciate the 3rd party idea especially for a budget, BUT, for me I’d rather just take it slow save up and buy Lego . And I know nobody asked my opinion but I thought I’d put in my 2 cents
I got a question. Can’t find the answer online anywhere. I got one pack of road plates. I assembled way it instructs. However I get Lego speed champions which are too wide for roads. I found out you can connect the road plates in a way to accommodate the wider car sizes but there’s one issue I ran into. The center peg squares on road plates. Once I put them on I had no way to remove them. I had even carefully nudged the tip of my exact knife to leverage it out and it just broke the tip inside the very tiny slither of space where it’s pegged. Please I’m begging is there a way to remove the pegs once assembled or are they always stuck? I even tried the cheap Lego brick remover from Lego store and nothing ;(

The rising cost of Lego is a real issue. So many new sets are now aimed at the adult market with a price tag above the average toy. The Lego baseplates are grossly overpriced. All my mils plates are made up with alternative manufacturers baseplates and bricks or damaged, discoloured Lego. They are not seen and work perfectly well.

1: Small definitely works well.
What base plates do you use?
@@WearilyMistaken I mostly use official ones, but for my winter village, I use ones I got at a small toy shop. I can’t remember the brand though.
Great ideas! Those little sets are always great to have on hand. Thanks for the comment!
Smart. You could also scrap them for pieces if you wanted to after taking the vehicles, minifigs, accessories.
@@NewBrickerton thx
I had 2 or 3 huge tubs of Lego bricks when we moved over a year ago and none of my kids wanted them. . . .
dang, that's really sad..........
Tip nr 5 is debatable, I would not consider other brands, but that's me. The others are 100% accurate, I would suggest only to refer the Pick & Brick Wall if you have a LEGO store close to you. Cheap and excellent value for the quantity and parts you have accessible.
Tip 5 is hecka debatable. It's up to everyone's personal preference! Thanks for the comment and also for the open mind.
Yes it is up to anyone, but for me, alternative bricks are one of the few options, I have.
This is amazing! I love that there are houses, castles, and so much detail! I subscribed
Thank you for this amazing video, as a Lego technic fan you inspired me to start buying city sets and start my LEGO city ❤️
Super late reply, but thanks for the awesome comment. I appreciate it!
Hogwarts became a public school in a muggle city
This is one of my favorite comments I've ever gotten LMAO 😂😂 yes. Yes it did!

saying that The LEGO brick is better in any category than their competitors is simply not true ...
That's awesome! Thank you for the comment!
Smart idea to start small and to not get overwhelmed with wanting the larger modular builds.
just earned a sub great video!
Thank you!!
i feel like you should talk more about the space you need for a lego city or yours in general i have been building a city for a long time so i use these tips you mention they are so helpful. aka please dont say my name during a video if you announce comments for your channel
Good point, I've gotten a few comments like this saying I should talk about space requirements. I should address this in a future video. No worries, I won't say your name. Thanks for the comment!!
you can buy copy's of older sets on chinese webshops its cheaper than try to buy them from other people and for show who cares? just don't buy sets from china that lego still sells
great tip! Thank you.
Thanks for the help now i can play more and be more interested 😊 you deserve a like and sub
Thank you so much! Glad you liked it.
Dollar tree sells basically every color of large baseplates for 1.25$ and its usaully in stock.
great tip!
I did not have that much Lego when I was a kid and as I got older I wanted to create a town or cityscape. I reduced the scale so my city looked more realistic and the need to use every last piece drove creativity. I wish I had a big empty garage and thousands of bricks because I would be building my own mini New York.
Are there known good and known crap 4rd parties? My wife gor my 4. Year old some sets that were unbuildable.
Hi😗
Thank you, I appreciate your support!
Great video! Can I also apply these tips to my upcoming Minecraft city?
The tips will work, but the only cost for Minecraft is the game. You can make a tiny city or a big city for the same cost :D Minecraft is better than lego in that regard my friend but thank you for watching. I liked the avenged sevenfold song on your channel
@@NewBrickerton Thanks! Maybe your next video can be a pros/cons list between Lego and Minecraft? Also thanks for checking out my video! I spent a lot of time making that video when I was 12 years old. I put a lot of effort into it, so I appreciate you checking it out!

j'ai aimé le début mais quand on commence à acheter du faux lego c'est pas terrible pour rester gentil
Understood, thanks for watching!
But I watch RUclips where the average MOC is $4k - $10k

Super video but I have 1 tip for you : make custom building in the city
I didn't have many at the time but I have a few custom buildings now! Thanks for the comment!
Alternative LEGO?!?! Blasphemer!
It's not for everyone! Thanks for watching though.
Hi new subbie was wondering which tables would be best i live in the uk and our rooms are small to start with. Any info much appreciated
Thanks for the sub!! The most popular table seems to be the LINNMON / ADILS table from ikea, it's about 55 USD. The most affordable for starting out would just be a cheap folding table.
@@NewBrickerton thank you will have a look
This video was amazing! Great tips. And I've found that the baseplates from Dollar Tree are actually a very good quality and are dirt cheap
Thank you!! I'm glad you liked it. Dollar tree is a great tip, I will check that out!
They quit making and selling them
Got recommended this video. Given the amount of detail you put in each tip was really helpful. Anything that saves me money is good for me.
Also Checked out some of your other videos and just real impressed on presentation. You deserve more subscribers. Keep it up!
Thanks so much Max. This is the utmost of compliments. Glad to have your kind words in this community.
And this video started this mans whole career
I think one point needed is how "buy only what is needed" like remeber your old small off brand naval carrier which now has no purpose in the lego city since it doesent fit the city vibes/theme around
That's a very good point. I have a full shelf of sets that I haven't used. Maybe if people are interested I can do a part 2, as I've already realized a few things I left out of the video. The naval ship actually became the base for the town sign as well as the Grey building the avengers tower sits on at the moment, so tip# 2: use what you have also applies here. Thanks as always!
I have buildings train and everything to build city but i dont have space fór it :((
That is the worst. Unfortunately space is really hard to come by. Can you set up a table somewhere?
@@NewBrickerton no i can't:((
I am not seeing the links to some of your favorite non-LEGO sources. Did I just miss them in the comments somewhere? Thanks for the video - now I need a table and space and baseplates or I would start my city right this minute per your suggestion.
Thank you Betty! They were included in the description, but you have to scroll down a bit. I'm including the list at the bottom of this comment as well. Thanks for the comment, and getting the space and starting it out is often the hardest part. Good luck!!

Hi, anyone knows an app for iPad where I can create my own design in lego?
I'm not super familiar with iPad, but have you tried the LEGO Digital Designer app or mecabricks.com/?
@@NewBrickerton I’ve downloaded it for the ipad, need to take my time to check it out and create my design.
Going to make a castle which was build thousands of years ago :)
Are you seriously using compatible parts......
Yuh!
I thaught this was a good video until the last one
It's not for everyone, cheers! :)
This video sure has the production quality of a large channel.
Thanks so much Tom. I'm really interested in video so I love to take the time to make it how I like it!
Where/how did you get the road plates?
I usually get mine at stores like Walmart, but you can find them on the LEGO website and on Amazon as well!
1:55 the hogwarts castle could be a church
Definitely! I've seen some good MOCs of it turned into a church. I pictured it as a university.
@2:46 “Start right after watching this video” love the encouragement.
Btw how did you make this ice cream shop? 3:24 it looks awesome
Thank you!! I just took a look at the pieces and arranged them in a way I thought looked good (lame answer I know). I used just a few extra pieces besides what was in the truck. It might be a good idea for me to do a video on how to build that ice cream shop while that set is still available to buy!
@@NewBrickerton i would love to see a vid about it cuz i want to make a city of my own and want that build in it.
@@kilzr3316 I made a major upgrade to that ice cream shop and I'll be posting a video on it soon, keep your eyes open!
@@NewBrickerton Thank You✨
I love this video. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the kind words.
I’m saying dollar trees baseplates rule! 99% of my baseplates are bought from there.
Where do you get the road plates from?
Road Plates 60304, or you can buy them individually on Bricklink which I've heard is cheaper.
I even tried the cheap Lego brick remover from Lego store and nothing ;(
another idea that might not appeam to everyone but certainly helps those on a budget: just build micro scale. works fine for me
I hope I didn’t see glue in the intro…
Never any glue!

To everyone out there My city doesn’t even have roads, just got some card and made a substitute so if you are limited in space or money there’s a good idea for you
That's a great idea! Be creative and the most important part is have fun!
The rising cost of Lego is a real issue. So many new sets are now aimed at the adult market with a price tag above the average toy.
The Lego baseplates are grossly overpriced. All my mils plates are made up with alternative manufacturers baseplates and bricks or damaged, discoloured Lego. They are not seen and work perfectly well.
just found your channel and I love it. keep up the good work my guy
That's the utmost compliment. Glad to have you in the community, and thank you!!
Mind blowing, I spent 20 dollars on a big grey base plate, I could of spent two dollars more to get more base plates. I got scammed 😭😭😭
I started my own lego city today and I built a couple of buildings for my city
The used lego bricks (dirty) could also be used in the front of the lego city to show that it has been used for years
That's true! I've seen some post apocalyptic builds that are incredible.
Some really good points!
