    Hi, Nick! I know this post is a couple years old so I hope you're still monitoring for questions. First off: your videos are GREAT. I am a data/analytics nerd so all of the science behind your videos is really appreciated! Question on the 2k time trial: I was unclear on how to use the results of the 2k for VO2Max estimation. Do I use the average pace over the entire 2k, do I use the last XX percentage of intervals average (knowing the first few are much faster as I'm tapping the anaerobic capability), the mode of the intervals or something else? Also, are we using this to gauge just VO2Max pace, or also MaxHR? Thanks!!

      Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
      The 2km TT is to establish vVO2max or alternatively known as MAS (Max Aerobic Speed). Take the av. Pace of the TT to find this. It’s not perfect but has great correlation in most cases to a VO2max lab result. You wouldn’t get the ml/kg/min number though.
      You should get pretty close to maxHR during this effort so that could also be used or your could opt for a shorter 3min flat out effort just to establish MaxHR.

    Thanks for the guide! I was wondering if there are charts for us to compare the running times or the maximal W for cycling in order to gauge our VO2 max scores?

      Not really because running economy plays a strong factor in performance, but not an even role across all athletes. Theoretically you could get a chart for VO2max estimated from a Multi Stage Fitness Test (Beep Test) and then equate the 2km TT pace with the finishing pace of the beep test to get a score but this probably isn’t a very sound way of getting a number.

    Thank you very much, have always been looking for this method out of the lab..now did you say ideally we should look for a time trial of 6-7 minutes for 2k? so that is per kilometre or for 2k??

    • @NJSportScience
      @NJSportScience  4 года назад

      Louis Taguaba most if not all athletes should only be able to sustain their own VO2max intensity for about 6-7min. Therefore for the majority of people 2km time trial is a good consistent test.

    Is there a chart that equates 2k time trial to a specific VO2 max?

      cooper test has such a formula. it is just approx, because more factors are at work.

    Could you do a 6-7 minute TT on the bike for vo2 bike? My trainer is not a smart trainer, so would have to try and manually hold 20 watt increments each minute, which might be not so accurate.

      @NJSportScience  4 года назад

      Great question. The TT works for running because of the lacking access to treadmills. Theoretically you could do it on the bike as well but similar with running you get variance mainly due to pacing issues (go out too hard or too easy). If you have access to power I would just be disciplined and sit within 5watts either side of the target as best you can. You’ll get reasonable accuracy. You should hopefully end up with similar results either way though so worth looking into.

      @@NJSportScience fair enough, I will give it a go. I've done the 20 minute ftp test after 5 minute hard effort and the 1 hour time trial (that was tough!)but haven't officially done the vo2 test. Can you go the other way and find vo2 from ftp and weight?

    • @NJSportScience
      @NJSportScience  4 года назад +2

      Not really because you’d just be guessing/estimating. At least off a field test you increase your accuracy. The reason being depending on a whole range of factors your ftp could be anywhere between 80-95% of VO2max which is far too broad of a range to try estimate the gap
