    I really hope you read this, the RUclips algorithm has only just made this video appear for me in my recommendations and this topic is entirely in my domain. I'm a graphics engine programmer and anti-aliasing is a speciality of mine.
    There's loads of things for me to say about your video, please do read.
    MSAA works 'essentially' the way you described, but it's actually a bit backwards. The sample-points of MSAA are tied to multiple "buffers" - these are pretty much multiple copies of the image and the depth buffer. So 2x MSAA will have two copies of the image buffer and depth buffer, 4x would have four, etc. The GPU will shade the pixel's colour ONCE and then for each sample point that the triangle hits the corresponding buffer will have that shade result written to. Same deal with depth. At the end of everything being rendered the MSAA buffers are blended together to create the anti-aliased final image.
    This results in MSAA having increased geometry resolution at the same cost as native resolution's shading rate. 4x MSAA at 1080p will consume the same GPU memory as 4k, shade the pixels as if they were 1080p, but treat the geometry as if it is 4k. This is why you see more detail with higher MSAA, there's more MSAA buffers for geometry to write to - it is effectively 4k down sample for geometry.
    MSAA doesn't work on surface of the geometry (there is a big 'HOWEVER' coming up) so the textures in the middle receive no anti-aliasing with MSAA - the hope is that their filtering will take care of this; which is what the bilinear/trilinear/anisotropy is there to take care of - it precalculates what the anti-aliased texture should look like and selects those for sampling (and blends them about in the case of trilinear and anisotropic). The reason anisotropic looks better is because the texture mips are precalculated for filtering in the X and Y axis individually, not just in the XY together, the number of anisotropic multipliers is the number of samples used for blending the filtered result. The idea of texture filtering is "the more wrong (aliased) samples we choose the closer we'll get to a desired (non-aliased) result".
    The issue with MSAA not applying to textures hits textures with alpha transparency. Alpha of a texture has nothing to do with the geometry of a triangle, so it has no effect at all on the MSAA sample point selection and as a result carries on believing all samples are covered (so the alpha value will blend with all MSAA buffers, even our human belief is that an alpha cut-out should be an "edge"). There is a hack to improve this called "alpha-to-coverage" which pretty much every modern game uses by default, however I don't think CS:GO does for some reason (need to double check this). Alpha-to-coverage hijack the MSAA buffers to blend 2^N levels of transparency when those buffers are blended together at the MSAA resolve step (end of frame, when your "average colour" is sorted out). If something is 50% transparent, then it will render to 1/2 of the MSAA buffers, so when blended 50% transparency is produced. There is a heck of a lot of GPU crap going on such as stippling/dithering to try and fake more levels of transparency, but it generally works quite nicely (even if no MSAA is available). GTA V is a good example of alpha-to-coverage being used.
    FXAA does not take depth into account, would be cool if it did, but it doesn't. Just a minor thing to pick up on. This is a performance thing, it's faster to sample just the colour buffer a few times then to sample both depth and colour a few times for each pixel. FXAA uses luminosity of a pixel, so it relies on the fact that human eyes are more sensitive to changes in light than colour to try and smooth out (and blur up) pixels that have sudden change in luminosity.
    The gold-standard of AA is super-sampling, but the reason that isn't used is because of the very high shading rate of a 4k image compared to a 1080p image (as an example). Super-sampling retains as much of the original aliased data as possible until the very end when it is resolved to the smaller native resolution output, MSAA effectively does that but only for geometry, the shading rate is at output resolution - so less GPU shader work happening per pixel but same memory consumption.
    Super sampling + MSAA will get you the most accurate image possible: at 4k super sampling with 4x MSAA you will get geometry information of an 8k(!!!) image shaded at a 4k rate then down sampled to 1080p. That's a LOT of data that's being aliased into a single pixel (4x shading rate, 16x geometry coverage). DSR is super-sampling but with clever metrics involved to attempt an even better image (likely pixel coverage like MSAA to bias the more important pixels, but without the shading rate benefits).
    So why did 2x MSAA increase your frame-rate? My guess is that you have a GPU that uses tiled rendering (very likely these days). A tiled GPU will load up a chunk of the memory and operate on that before writing the result. If no MSAA does not fill up that chunk of memory, then the tiled renderer is not saturated with stuff to do. It probably completes its work load then waits for everything to wind down before the next work load. 2x MSAA probably saturates the tiled renderer, that's my >>guess

      @Kent Chong Super Sampling as high as you can set it and MSAA as high as you can set it (up to your performance tolerance).
      FXAA is only there to make the image shimmer less. With Super Sampling FXAA is tolerable, without Super Sampling it's going to blur a lot at native resolution and you might notice it.
      Ultimately go with what you think is best.

      MSAA doesn't do that. it just detect polygon edges (hence it doesn't fix texturemaps with alpha, like fences and foliage) and does two samples per pixel only on those edges. increasing the resolution by a factor of two would be using 2x SSAA, which basically renders the whole scene at a higher resolution then scales it down. It's the most accurate method but has the highest performance penalty.

    The approach you describe is basically what SMAA 4x and TXAA 4x does already, with added temporal reprojection, giving 2 samples from 2 frames for 4 samples and then does the morphological reconstruction over that. It's a shame that Nvidia had to lock down TXAA because it is still the best option of antialiasing bar none, but only a few games support it.

    Hey Philip, what about NVIDIA MFAA? You can enable it in NVIDIA Control Panel and it will overwrite MSAA whenever MSAA is used, apparently its supposed to have a similar AA effect to MSAA but with a lot lower performance hit.
    Could you perhaps test this as well?
    And btw, thanks for this very nice and informative video! :)

    • @TheSandvichTrials
      @TheSandvichTrials 6 лет назад +3

      MFAA is MSAA, but with alternating positions for where the MSAA samples are. The end result is always a combination of the current frame and the previous in some clever way to avoid ghosting. There should be no downside to using it unless you see visible ghosting / motion blur, and the end result should be double the MSAA quality for free.

    hey philip please make a video about the difference between high dpi + low ingame sense and low dpi + high ingame sense. high dpi and low sens should feel smoother because less pixels will be skipped that way but most pros use very low dpis like 400/800.

    • @SimonZellox
      @SimonZellox 6 лет назад +1

      Low DPI and high sense can cause your crosshair to skip pixels. I tried to play fortnite on a PS4 with my mouse and I had to turn the in-game sense up because my mouse appearantly uses low DPI on the PS4. It felt horrible and it confirms what you're saying. You can try it yourself, it's bad.

    I just wanted to say, this is my personal FAVORITE video. It's super insightful and I learned a lot. Before this video I would just go into settings and set everything to medium or low and turn off stuff that "seems" demanding. Now I have decent understanding of what I'm doing when playing around in settings. I would love more content like this. I'm playing dirt rally 2.0 right now, and I was hoping you mentioned other settings like EQAA. I'm going to doing some googling now to find the answer, but I think it's a good topic for future videos. Other videos on the topic of pixels and graphic tend to assume I know enough to understand wtf they're talking about.

    3kliks, remember the "adaptive MSAA" from old AMD Catalyst drivers? Thats what saved my eyes back in 1.6. It was MSAA that also smoothed sprites, so you could see better through vents, or the blinds on window inferno.
    It was basically looking like SSAA, but with almost the same performance impact as MSAA.
    But somehow, it doesnt work anymore nowadays. I really dont understand why.

    I use 1440p and I find FXAA and MSAA unnecessary in CSGO, the higher your resolution becomes the less important antialiasing becomes, and the more taxing it becomes on your GPU. Although 2x MSAA doesn't decrease my FPS too significantly, I can still feel the difference in input latency compared to having it off

    One thing though: I'm not a sadist. I just want as many pixels per second on my 4k screen as my crappy r9 270x can possibly calculate. Eventually you get used to all those rough edges.

    I always suggest keeping AA off for CSGO.
    In scenarios where you see only see single pixels of enemies above boxes or around corners, it's A LOT easier to see the enemy with AA off. If you have AA on, the color of the pixel will not change much, with it off it the color of the pixel will change completely.
    Matters a lot. Especially in places like ticket on mirage where you can frequently see a single line of pixels above the box if a CT is standing.

    • @pederhsx
      @pederhsx 5 лет назад

      @@3kliksphilip Good point.
      But I still believe that in the cases where nothing shows with AA off, most would never notice the enemy with AA om.
      Anecdotally I play with experienced players who seem to miss obvious pixels. So far all of them have had AA on.

    MSAA takes multiple samples of the depth buffer and stencil buffer (if used), which in OpenGL are called fragments. But the fragment shader still only runs *once* per pixel for shading. The single result from the fragment shader is made copies of, once for every sample which is covered by the current triangle and which passes the depth test. That's how you acquire more resolution,. The final color is then all the color samples added together, using the number of samples as weights. For any given fragment you can end up with fragment colors from different triangles, so when you take the average you get information from all of them.
    If you also had one unique result from the fragment shader for each sample like the depth buffer, you would end up with FSAA; full scene antialiasing. FSAA gives the best results but is extremely bandwidth heavy. MSAA is almost as good and much faster, but does not help with improving quality of triangle interiors or texture resolution, it only helps with the jaggies at the edges.
    FXAA is in my opinion pretty crap, but better than nothing on older hardware. It is entirely shader based and works with edge detection. If it finds an edge (hue, saturation and brightness-based) it blurs it. But it does so with no extra information, so you end up losing detail, not gaining any. That's about it. You're almost better off using MSAA with a lower resolution than turning on FXAA in my opinion.
    Support for FSAA in CSGO would be amazing. It can be implemented easily enough with render-to-texture and then downsampling.

    This is more interesting in games like Arma where it's important to be able to make out player models that are camouflaged and also like 5 pixels total. In those sorts of games, FXAA is utterly terrible, because you need to be able to see those 5 pixels, and higher MSAA is frequently worth a lot.
