Almost every person on this planet has had a moment like Marianne's. It's heart breaking but the strength of that individuals character will determine their survival from it.....

I know Marianne's state all to well. It's a horrible thing to go through & I do not wish it on anyone. I'm still not completely healed from mine & I'm married. Some wounds can never be completely healed.

Why the book is better than the film:
One scene we don’t get - Marianne sick and dying in a bed, and a miserable, married Willoughby hearing about it, getting drunk, and driving his carriage to where they’re staying and almost getting his face slammed in the door and locked outside by Elinor!
He begs pathetically at the door for just 5 minutes. Being nice, Elinor lets him in, and he gives a sad, sloppy confession with Elinor listening and scolding him like the man-child he is. It turns out that his new wife is a jealous shrew and upon finding Marianne’s letters to him, wrote out a terrible, mean letter and made him copy it in his own hand and send it to Marianne, breaking her heart.
He lives spending the rest of his life married to the shrew, and is always comparing every supposed beauty to Marianne ( his unattainable ideal).
This is why I liked the BBC version better.

@@bernadette573 i don’t know which version you read but I do remember that he did not marry Miss Grey out of love. He married because he needed the money, since he was kicked out because he got Brandon’s foster daughter pregnant. He even said that she knows about the whole situation and held it over his head. Hence his drunken speech. In the BBC version, the one where Dominic Cooper plays Willoughby, they did that scene that Mariah ( the person who posted that comment) was talking about.
@@sarawinardi6745 Yes, he was a cad, and seduced and abandoned Eliza, and got drunk and gambled and had expensive habits. I wanted something awful to befall him, and instead the narrator showed he found a measure of happiness in his choices. Austen had a much bigger heart than me. I wanted him to break his neck riding, but she wrote: Willoughby was one “to exert, and frequently to enjoy himself. His wife was not always out of humor, nor his home always uncomfortable; and in his breed of horses and dogs, and in sporting of every kind, he found no inconsiderable degree of domestic felicity.”
Now I want to read the book I absolutely love this film. It was exceptionally cast. Rest Allen Rickman's beautiful soul. He wasn't as dashing as Willoughby but I liked him better anyways especially that deep voice.

He won't. Regret it that is. Well, he'll regret not marrying her especially after he finds out that his aunt would have written him back into her will if he'd married Marianne because even if she has no money of her own, she's still a respectable girl from a respectable family and that would have been enough to get him back into her good graces. But ultimately he'll always find some way to enjoy himself because he's rich enough now to go on doing whatever he likes, and his wife isn't always in an unpleasant mood. Though he will always see Marianne as the perfect woman that no other woman can hold a candle to, and as his real love lost to him forever, though as Elinor reflected he's more sad that he didn't get both money and the girl he loves and because it hasn't ended as well for himself as he would have liked, he's not sad solely because he lost the woman he loved or that he has made the woman he loved unhappy. We get a whole paragraph dedicated to him at the end of the book telling us all this, I think it's to cement in our heads forever that he's not the romantic hero Marianne imagined him to be, because he'll get on just fine without her and won't spend the rest of his life in absolute misery.
We also get an earlier scene where he declares his feelings for Marianne to Elinor where he tries to justify his actions towards the other young girl (pointing out that his behaviour doesn't mean that she was above reproach which doesn't really do him any justice because he's as good as trying to deny that this was even slightly his fault and saying that the didn't know things had gotten that bad for her because he hadn't realised he'd forgotten to give her his address), admits that he first pursued Marianne for fun but then genuinely fell for her and wanted to marry her, and then reveals that his fiancé dictated that letter he wrote to Marianne (she knows he doesn't love her but she won't be pushed aside for anyone else) and Elinor forgives him to a certain point without forgiving him for everything. Her mother doesn't forgive him as readily when Elinor tells her about it, and Elinor figures it was because she wasn't there to hear him actually say it in the moment, but she doesn't argue for him any further because she's had time to reflect fully on his confession and can see that even though he admits to some of his selfishness and carelessness with other people he can't see how selfish he's actually been.
As Marianne says at the end he will be unhappy. And she married him she would share in it. He will forever miss her while being in a loveless marriage that he has to stay in for financial reasons. But had he married Marianne then he would have wanted more material things

Actually ladies fashion from early 19th century (Sense and Sensibility Period) inspired 1910-1913 fashion (Titanic period) in their high waisted gown, see through textile and Grecian hair style. No wonder Marianne character hairstyle look a like Rose hair style

It's not exactly about that. It's about being deceived, used and discarded, having your heart broken, being humiliated, gaslit and trying to find your footing again. That's what this scene is about, she didn't realize yet that she ''can't have him''.
Fair enough, although I felt sorry for Willoby. Maryann and Col Brandon both believe that he intended to marry her and did love her; but the theme was that he had to marry the other girl for her dowry and important family arrangements. Marriage is a business, is the theme. Not so much that Willoby didn't love her.

Unfortunately no. However, Jane Austin wrote many other stories like this one. All her books are wonderful.

At the start of this film she is very wealthy. It is only after her father dies that the women are turned out of the great estate and left in poverty by their older half brother.
Although now poor, they retain their upper crust upbringing and manners. And are still included in high society. Otherwise they would not have been at the ball in the first place.
Come to think of it that's similar to Titanic. She starts off rich and takes herself out of those circles. At least she had a choice in that film.

This movie wouldn’t have existed if not for her, she wrote the screenplay. Initially, she didn’t want to play Elinor, but the director Ang Lee convinced her plus the studios wouldn’t fund the movie if she didn’t star. Emma has always been regarded as a great actress, but in the mid-90s particularly she was in a career high, having won an oscar plus nominated for two more within the five years before this movie was made. People want to see her.
People are extra harsh to her when it comes to age compared to the men in this movie (Alan Rickman in particular) who are much older than their characters as well.
