"I wish with all my soul that his wife may plague his heart out." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 cursing in Jane Austen's language....very classy
I agree with her!
I can't blame her for saying that. She feels Marianne's pain and she's angry that Willoughby chose to abandon Marianne.
I am going to use this.
Reminds me of Emma Thompson’s quote in Much Ado About Nothing: “I would eat his heart out in the marketplace!”
What's the meaning? It means she is married to Willoughby but will never have his love? Because his heart is beating only for Marianne?
Mrs. Jennings is a busybody but when tragedy strikes she is the best of friends. And Ang Lee captures not only perfectly captures Marianne's pain but what friends these two sisters have.
Actually no, she is making the situation worse here!
Mrs Jennings meant well!! But she spoke at the wrong time!! You should always look at the intention of the person. I think she meant well!!
Yes. She did not speak wrongly by mentioning a date set for Willoughby to be married. Marianne had to find out and it was better to find out as soon as possible.
@@rosiepestel7836 I don't think she did speak at the wrong time. Better for Marianne to find out as soon as possible that a date had been set for Willoughby to be married.
@@m.e.d.7997 The truth is necessary. It would will out somehow, somewhere, anyway. It's best that Marianne is informed by a friend.
Words fail to describe this scene. So much brilliance by Emma and Kate..
So true...
I remember feeling each and every suffering of Marianne when I read the book. The way it took toll on her body and how many people noticed her "losing all her beauty" after the unfortunate event with Willoughby...it was heartbreaking.
The same thing happened to me. I love this movie!!
😢
Same, and I was going through something similar, it made it really easy for me to connect with her character
I remember some psychopaths assuming I “lost my beauty” after mass abuse & psychopathy. But then they meet me in person & realize how wrong him & his friends are. As much as they try to smear ;)
It was so sad. The descriptions of the physical, mental and emotional toll her heartbreak was taking on her was so sad but very well written 😭
It's really sweet that Emma thompson and kate winslet have an amazing chemistry
They've become best of friends in real life.
@@dobazajr I’m not sure but I read somewhere it was Emma who introduced Kate to her second husband.
The shivers in kates voice in the beginning is so effective.
The pallor of her face is effective as well.
Mrs. Jennings may be too gossipy and unable to keep secrets, but her loyalty is unshakable. Her words here prove that she loves the girls dearly and will always immediately condemn anyone who hurts them.
The Dashwoods definitely owe her a great debt.
I’ve been in this situation even if it wasn’t done so publicly. The huge amounts of passion without expressing love and then coldly denying it and acting as if you were crazy to believe that it was real. You can tell when someone cares. It’s for the best in the end because their true character is revealed and you’re saved from it. At the time, it can feel soul destroying, and it can impact every part of your life including your physical health. It’s also a powerful lesson.
Yeah, that cold denying and making you doubt your own perception is classical gaslighting. One of the most insidious things people one can inflict upon others...
“Did he tell you that he loved you?” “No...yes...never absolutely. It was everyday implied but never declared.” -- we have a modern day version of this...MU
When that lady came rushing in yelling right in front of Marianne that hes to be married at the end of the month to someone with 50 pounds. Just makes Marianne cry louder😂
@@clouds0103 50 thousand. Big difference
Wot's marvel universe got to do with anything?
Emma awarded Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for this masterpiece. Very well deserved.
What's funny is that Marianne (Kate Winslet) is being comforted by Elinor (Emma Thompson) who in real life is married to The actor that played Willoughby
Or that Marianne (Kate Winslet) marries Colonel Brandon (Alan Rickman) in this movie and that Elinor (Emma Thompson) marries Edward Ferras (Hugh Grant) when Emma Thompsons character was married to Alan Rickmans character and is sister to Hugh Grants character in 'Love Actually'.
whats even more ironic is the same year this movie came out emma thompsons then husband kenneth branagh left her for ms thompsons close friend helena bonham carter. greg wise and emma got close on the set of this movie i believe.
I think this must be where they met. In her diary of the production, she never mentions Greg Wise in a way to indicate that there is anything between them.
@@swastikausa Kate Winslet also acted with Kenneth in Hamlet :)
I think it was sweet that Kate Winslet knew Greg Wise liked Emma, but he never acted on it as she was married at the time. She was the one who went to him and casually mentioned Emma was getting divorced, as no one really knew at that time. Then went to Emma and was all. You know Greg has a crush on you. She spoke about it in an interview once.
But she lucked out in the end, didn't she?
Rachel Berner thank God.. cause Fanny Steele is such a beech!! (With her £50.000 )
Not Fanny Steele, Miss Gray.
Yes she is
Always better to go with the man who is crazy about you!
Yes, but it would have been better for her, concerning the news of Willoughby's date of marriage being set, if she had done as Mrs. Jennings said: She should have had her cry out and been done with Willoughby and started liking the man who had shown true loving attention towards her-Colonel Brandon. But she kept longing for Willoughby and almost lost her life because of it.
For some reason when she said "We are not engaged" I always have an urge to say "what?" and "It was everyday implied but never declared" I always have an urge to say "Oh Marianne!" and throw my hands up even though I know she didn't do anything wrong in this instance.
But she did do wrong. She threw every rule of propriety and caution out the wind. She scorned the warnings of her sister and even her mother and made herself so transparent that all of London knew her feelings. What she did wrong was adamantly refuse to protect herself in any way from dissapointment, ridicule, or derision. Especially by Regency Era standards, she behaved quite badly.
P.S. I am by no mean defending Willoughby and his villainy.
@@shireads2954exactly!! Whenever I see or hear comments like this to the effect of “what happened to Marianne was horrible, I’ve been in the same situation but there’s nothing you can do…” I could just pull my hair out in frustration. There’s no end the list of reasons why something like that could have been prevented and it’s actually the entire point of the book!
Kate Winslet was so awesome in this role of Marianne.
Toni Sumblin *19 years old when filmed
i know exactly the terrible pain that marriane felt
@Toni Sumblin huh?
Me too...heart pangs!!
Me too!!
I feel your pain Marianne, it's as if your heart is bleeding and that you can actually feel the physical pain, you lose interest, appetite , you even feel like you're losing your life, but thank God it gets better with time
Yep I've been there many times. Not a good feeling at all.
How about after 32 yrs of marriage.
Been there.

Well for those of us who have clinical depression (and not situational one as this) it does NOT get better.
It bothers me how much this Austen book, story and film is SO slept on. It's beyond unappreciated despite it being (in my opinion) one of the most well done adaptations of Jane Austen's works.
Are you nuts? Aside from Pride and Prejudice, this is THE most popular Austen book. The unappreciated ones are Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey. No one talks about them except to whine that they don't like the lead heroines. And they're always overlooked for adaptations.
@@lovetolovefairytales Perhaps you’re right, but I have never heard anyone talk about or mention Sense and Sensibility outside of my own home! I once even brought it up with a close friend who was a big Austen fan, and she knew nothing about the novel or movie.
@@orawolfgram2838 really? How strange. Almost every Austen fan I've ever met talks about Sense and Sensibility nonstop. I thought it was a regular thing.
@@orawolfgram2838 The she's not a real fan. Because really? This is the saint graal of Austen adaptation. It won Emma Thompson an Oscar and many other awards.
@Ora Wolfgram I know this was 2 years ago, but that never stopped me in a RUclips comment section! Your friend is no Austen fan. She may be a Pride and Prejudice fan. Or a Kiera Knightley fan. Or, if she has good taste a Colin Firth fan. But Sense and Sensibility has been Austen's 2nd most well known novel. It may be supplanted by Emma at this point, but there are only 6 major novels. How are you going to call yourself an Austen fan if you can't recognize 6 novels by name?
Kate was so great in this!
Yes. And I can’t believe some people saying she wasn’t as well known as Leonardo Dicaprio before Titanic? She was in this movie and she had an oscar nomination. Acting next to Emma Thompson too. All before Titanic happened.
She's crying so wretchedly. Some olives might cheer her up.
I hope so. The dried cherries didn't. Isn't there some good old Constantia wine in the house?
If I recall correctly, in the story she had not eaten dinner the night before nor breakfast that day so Mrs. Jennings may have had a point that perhaps eating something would help her recover a little.
One of my favorite movies. I have seen it over ten times.
NOOOOOOOO
"It was every day implied, but never *professedly* declared." Someone go back in time and fix this!
Nope. That would be horrible.
Unfortunately, many go through this. Men and women. Part of life. That saying no rules in love and war is realistic even if it’s misunderstood. Of course it hurts but we have to accept it. What else can we do? We reject people as well as we get rejected. The most painful rejection is the one in love. Other things come and go but love is hard to find.
Please don't speak about war in the context of love, don't use this word lightly, you don't know what war really is. Secondly, you missed the point of the scene. It's not just about being ''rejected'', it's about being deceived, used and discarded. He traded her for money but what's worse is that he DENIED that there was ever something between them making her doubt her own perception, it's called gaslighting, and it's an insiduous thing to do. He didn't have the guts to break up honestly, instead he decided to paint it as their love/flirtation was just in Marianne's head. He discarded her like a toy, didn't even reject her.
s&s the book will make you cry. the movie is beautiful, wonderful actors, ang Lee did a wonderful job
So true...the movie is so good!!
Damn. Ghosted.
Hahahahaha...
Ooof!
Ah, good old gaslighting from Mr. Willoughby
Miss Jennings is an angel
I felt their love so he hurt me too. Damn you Willoughby you let us all down.
I feel like this had a crush on a guy at work and he looked intensely at me, smiled huge when he saw me, flirted with me, the others noticed it as well he pursued me at work, but never asked me out, he kept going back and forth between so warm and inviting, to cold and distant, he then quit wanting to talk to me for no reason other than he was in a bad mood, I asked him if he was ok, he made up a lie about me to our Supervisors and won't talk to me unless it is about the weather or hi and bye. I know he liked me, I know I didn't imagine it as the others noticed as well, so now I have to pass him on the hall with a wounded heart and not sure what to say as he will just turn me in if I try and talk to him in a deep conversation. I know I need to let him go, but it feels like it is not over and I want to know why, because I know there has to be more to it, I can feel him struggling with this choice he made, I'm an Empath, I know there is more but he won't tell me and that is what kills me everyday.

The wishy washy back and forth is how they build a trauma bond. It leaves you waiting and coming back hoping for another dopamine hit that they control. Plus it’s a work environment, inappropriate place for a relationship. Cut him off and heal. You’ll be much better off.
He is a NARCISSIST, they are drawn to empathethic people but it's NOT love (also, dear, it's cringe to call yourself such). You are not the only empathethic person in the world, you are NOT ''special'' in this therefore you DON'T ''feel'' anything in this situation, you just want to believe it because you're hooked. Sorry if I'm harsh but I was exactly like you in this regard. I thought I ''knew'' him, I couldn't let it go while he drained all enegy out of me. Narcissists are compelled to use and abuse kind sensitive people, your suffering feeds him, RUN FROM HIM, there's nothing ''more'' to it, trust me, I've been through this! This is NOT love!

What does it mean? "He loved me as I have loved him." They did the deed?
No, she's just saying that she was in love with him and all of his behavior assured her that he felt the same.
No! It would have been impossibile or it would bring terrible consequences to her! Sh is just saying that she was sure her love was requited!

Common English name. That's why everyone is referred to by their last name.

Scotty Boy me too especially this movie :)
+Scotty Boy Well, if Brandon had only chose to tell Marian the truth about Willoby, then she wouldn't have fallen in love with him right away. Instead, Brandon told Elinor about Willoby because Elinor isn't stubborn enough to disbelieve anyone.
