  • This video shows how to roast green coffee beans with a Behmor 1600 plus. It demonstrates the sound of "first crack". It also shows grinding the roasted coffee, tamping and extracting a shot of espresso to make a latte.

Great presentation, just bought a Behmor 1600+ and looking forward to throwing my modified pop corn maker and getting into using the Behmor for an even roast. Thanks again.

Karl Cotter I kept my popcorn popper. I roasted on them for three years. Getting use to the Behmor 1600 +.

@@jimdavis8804 Good on you Jim, I suppose its a backup if the unthinkable happens. I might just keep mine as well.

Great video Coffee Snob! Should consider an Airscape. Vacuum packs the beans removing any air from the vessel.

Thank you for the great presentation - top quality video. A question, if I may: the green beans seem to come from a Snobbery Indian selection, while the roasted batch at 3:41 says something like 'Ethiopian'. Which beans have you used?

I think it says «Elephant». If I'm correct, it may be the Indian Monsooned Malabar Asian Elephant coffee variety.

Thanks for the vid. I've been trying to come to grips with my Behmor with varying degrees of success.
Do you literally put your 100gms in and hit P1 and let it do it all for you? Or do you open the door at first crack/slow the roast/hit cool early etc. etc. ?
    Cheers

Glenn Dafoe For the price of this machine, the likelihood of you getting a consistent roast is very slim. You also have to keep in mind that not all green coffee beans roast the same.

Great video, I just ordered one from CS after watching. Do you cool the beans in the machine or do you take them out? Also where did you get the glasses? from there pretty cool.

Thanks for the feedback. The machine has its own cooling cycle and the glasses are double walled glass coffee cups. Here in Australia they are available in stores such as kmart and target - about AU$10-15 a pair.

Great video Rowan. Found this via Coffeesnobs.
What is the name of the second track and what genre of music is it? It is the perfect style for my cafe.

gccoffeesnob Hi, the track is Mean Streetz by MK2. It was sourced from googles royalty free archive. I'm not sure what the licencing restrictions are outside RUclips.

How is the cleaning aspect? And where does the smoke from the roast go? Thanks.

Hi, I use a shop vac to clean out all the chaff so it's very easy. It can get a little smokey so you need decent ventilation. I roast in the workshop so just leave the door open.

Random question, what kind of bag are you keeping your green coffee beans in at 0:25?

Rowan, what are your impressions on this device?. Thanks

Bryan Pleitez Hi Bryan, so far I'm very happy with the machine. I haven't really needed to experiment much with the settings. My one small gripe is that you get very little time to hit the "start" button at 75% into the roast. This is the built in safety feature to make sure you're paying attention. If you don't press "start" when it starts flashing it'll punish you and go into cooling mode prematurely. I've had to dump 2 batches for missing it - a warning beep would be nice.

+Rowan Ferguson Great video firstly and will answer why no beep. We (I) had considered a beep since we first started shipping the roaster and immediately it was concluded by all involved adding a beeper is an open invitation to walkaway from the roaster which is what we are trying to stop. Further had we added a beeper while the chip itself is inexpensive it would have required to PCBs be completely redesign at a great deal of expense and time. So systems would have been about $100-150 more and upgrade panels at least $100 more. Further it would have complicated the task of those who wished to upgrade. So more expensive, more complicated and people would walkaway.. There was no real upside and given we designed it to always occur at the 75% point knew users should be at the roaster anyway because 1C generally begins at the 80% point or close to. I too have lost 2 batches in about 1.5 years of testing and understand the argh factor, but that $10 loss is far less than the loss should the beans ignite while left unattended.

+Joe Behm Thanks for the info Joe. I guess if people really want an alarm they could easily use their phone or watch. I haven't lost any more batches so I guess I learned my lesson and have become more attentive as a result.

Rowan, each time I roast I set my iPhone as a reminder to kick me about 2 minutes before the un:30 starts to flash. Keep in mind I have to run a buesiness and often live in a perpetual state of jet lag, plus I'm 61 :)
Good luck and again great video

Is this model better than the previous one? The early machine, I have, is a piece of crap.; Sure it does a fantastic job WHEN IT WORKS> I have replace parts since it was new. That gets old real fast.
