    Good intro to the device. I've got the original 1600 which doesn't offer an many options but I find that I have better success tuning my roasts by only putting 7oz in for a 1/2# roast and then monitoring the results from 1st crack into 2nd crack. There's obviously a bit of art to knowing when to start the cooling cycle along with personal taste for degree of roast you want. It really takes time to develop the feel for when to stop - it's a combination of hearing where the roast is and closely smelling the exhaust. I know I've hit my personal taste for FC to FC+ when the exhaust goes from a kind of toasted smell to a more acrid smell. That's when I hit cool and open the front door to help speed cooling (I do this in my garage as the open door will jettison quite a bit of chaff!). All of this can be affected by ambient temps and humidity. In the dead of winter, I'll bring my roaster into the house for a few hours before I roast so everything is at room temp before heading back to the garage to do the actual roast.

    Could we please be able to buy this in europe. And do the small grid drum ever comes in stock? We are a bit left behind in Denmark. We absolutely love the roaster.

      Thanks for asking. Yes, we do ship to Denmark. We have roasters in stock and are still waiting on our next shipment of small grid drums. Just so you know, the roasters come with their own small grid drum.

    You mentioned that every once in a while you should roast on the 1/4 lb setting with an empty roaster for maintenance. Should you also do something similar if you are using a popcorn air popper? Doing an empty roast for maintenance?

    • @byronsweetmarias6609
      @byronsweetmarias6609 8 лет назад +1

      Some people wipe the their poppers with Simple Green or other cleaners in order to prevent coffee oil residue build-up. Running your popper after doing this will help burn off any residue left by those cleaners. It might also give chaff that's been hiding behind the vents a chance to escape. Other than that, running a coffee-less batch won't self-clean the way a Behmor self-cleans due to the extreme difference in airflow between the machines.

      Oh great, I've been wondering how to clean mine and that's perfect, thank you! Saving up money to get a Behmor soon and increase how much I can roast at a time.

    Power setting mix up. You say "P1" is the highest setting but it is Zero power. Could you fix this part of what, otherwise, is a great intro video. Thanks.

    • @SweetMariasCoffee
      @SweetMariasCoffee  Год назад +1

      P1 in automatic mode is the highest power setting but when in manual mode, it's zero power. For some reason, they are reversed in order when switching from auto to manual. Auto: P1 is the highest and P5 is the lowest. Manual: P1 is the lowest and P5 is the highest.

  • @toddkurzhal9407
    @toddkurzhal9407 2 года назад

    So I decided to go manual with city+/ full city+ using p5 and speeding up the drum. First Crack happened about 7 minutes in. I waited a minute and it started beeping. Looking for a second Crack I pressed C, and the machine wouldn't respond to allow me to add more time even while I was in manual. What did I do wrong?

    • @SweetMariasCoffee
      @SweetMariasCoffee  2 года назад +1

      Was there an error message after you heard the beeping. This was probably the culprit and your machine was more than likely automatically put into cooling mode which is why it didn't respond to pressing the C button.

    Does it have a ventilation fan or unit? I have heard the gasses are harmful. How can it be ventilated outside?

    • @SweetMariasCoffee
      @SweetMariasCoffee  4 года назад +2

      It has a feature that burns away most of the smoke before it has a chance to exit the roaster but there is still a little bit of smoke that come out of the back so it's best to roast outdoors, or in a location with good ventilation, especially if you are roasting multiple batches.

    I wonder how much electricity it takes to roast, dollar wise.

    • @jpsinger16
      @jpsinger16 6 лет назад +2

      I don't have the Behmor, but apparently its heating elements use around 1050 watts. If it takes 10 minutes to complete a roast, that would be 0.175 kilowatt hour per roast. If electricity costs 15 cents per kwh, that's less than 3 cents per roast.

    After having this for a few days and wasting a few pounds of coffee, I can say that this is the most disappointing and frustrating product purchase in recent memory. This thing is not only complex and unclear compared to my previous roasters (which actually have more programmability), but there are a couple of very frustrating and dangerous so-called "safety" features. The manual is full of gotchas that really should have been disclosed ahead of time. They affect usability so negatively that the machine basically doesn't work as anyone would rationally expect.
    The first frustration is that the machine will go into cooling mode and LOCK IT THERE if you don't press a button at a very specific time during the roast. How remarkably stupid. I lost one of several batches because a neighbor came over for a quick question, and I simply was not staring at the display although I was within safe sight of the machine. It doesn't beep or anything like that, just starts blinking the display, and you better be ready! Every other appliances that needs occasional attention beeps (toaster oven, real oven, even the blender). You can't even take a break to clean up or do other tasks, or you might miss it. The stupidity doesn't end there however, as the machine then refuses to start a new batch for about 15 minutes. The coffee is cool and destroyed by then. At least if I could restart a roast immediately, the stupid nanny control wouldn't be so onerous. But no matter what, even unplugging it doesn't reset it and you can't start heating again until it's fully cold.
    Then when trying manual mode, somehow it let me get the machine too hot for its liking, and it simply turned off completely. No warnings, and I can't find any documentation on exactly the temp limits so I can watch for it. Just OFF. Meaning that the drum stopped, the fans stopped, and the COFFEE CAUGHT FIRE! The elements were still hot and concentrated that into the coffee nearby. This "safety" feature could actually burn your house down. Nice. Stupid. I happened to be roasting on my welding table in the garage, so I grabbed welding gloves and pulled the drum out quickly. Oh yeah, the manual says not to roast in the garage, maybe the company will blame that for the problem. More on that later.
    The manual is full of grammatical issues and seems to have been written by an engineer. I'm an engineer. I design and write software, but I know that someone else has to write the docs in a way that users can understand it, and double-check my work. Half the time I couldn't understand what the manual was saying because of double negatives, misplaced commas, or the like. It's still unclear how various programming steps work together. Also the manual has a distinct personality, which tells me one guy wrote it and nobody edited it. That's a terrible idea; someone besides an engineer should check it for readability and understanding. Oh, and it has one nonsense term in it that they never bother to define (a real tech writer would include a glossary). They refer to it and never define it.
    The manual repeatedly says to never use it outside, even in a garage! Seriously, it says that. But in one of the how-to videos they talk about how it might make too much smoke inside the house. Which one is it, and why? Explain the thing about not using it in the garage? That's where my most powerful (20 amp) outlets are, also. I'm not interested in filling the house with excess heat, if nothing else. I have a "roaster station" just outside the back door, protected from the elements, with a fireproof surface. It would be nice to use it there.
    On top of all this, the roaster is rather weak heat-wise. Part of it is purposeful, as when the machine shut down from being too hot (under 400 degrees, don't know the actual limit). My voltage is fine (they make a big deal of this in the manual). The outlet voltage is 122v without a load, and 120.5-121.5 while heating. The machine uses exactly 9 amps, which is not all that much. I'm giving it everything it could ask for as far as power. It takes quite a long time to get to FC+ and then is unreliable doing so. Oh yeah, it's inconsistent, which I admit could be me since I'm new with it. But my iRoast2 would turn out nearly identical roasts every time, WITHOUT the babysitting once I figured out the right time/temp and programmed it. I expected this to be better, not worse.
    Using SM's Espresso Monkey Blend results in a bunch of beans getting stuck between the mesh of the drum and the blades that agitate it. So after dumping the coffee you have to reach in and poke out a bunch of stuck beans among the annoyingly sharp agitator blades. Some other blends with larger beans have less of this annoyance, others are even worse. Then you need to clean out all the chaff that didn't end up in the chaff tray (about 1/3 out, 2/3 in the tray). They don't want you to use it outside, so now you need a vacuum or something to not get it all over the house.
    Understandably, being a small company, Sweet Maria's can't afford to do dissatisfaction returns. I get that. So I'll just eBay this junk and cut my losses. Or maybe see if I can program an Arduino to control it instead of their dumb programming. If I have a bunch of rabid hyenas program it for me, the results couldn't be worse than this machine already is.
    I do wish the description on the site were more clear on all the limitations and complexity. I would never have bought it. I should have just never used it and sent it back as soon as I read the manual, but honestly, I couldn't believe it would be as horrible as it is. I'm still incredulous that someone made this and thinks this is a reasonable way to roast coffee. Does the manufacturer even drink coffee and use their own product? I also failed to read the 1-star reviews on Amazon which very clearly explain all of the problems with this machine, as I covered above.
    Finally, here are a few tips to get around all this:
    1. Do the preheat cycle with the coffee already in there. Run it for 1.5 minutes or a bit more, clear it, then start over. Be careful not to preheat too much, or another nanny "feature" will shut down the machine for a long time. At least your coffee won't be ruined at this stage, you've just wasted time. But you will waste a lot of time with this machine, get used to it.
    2. For light-ish roasts, you can engage the 1 pound setting while putting in only 1/2 pound, set it for max time, and walk away. The nanny feature won't kick in (or it would, after the roast is fully done anyway). Come back and press cool when its done. It will still take almost 20 minutes but you won't have to babysit.
    3. The best tip: DON'T BUY THIS.

      I feel your frustration with regard to the auto-cooling feature and the confusing instructions. Ruined my first several batches. I finally get fairly consistent roasts, but I have to use 1/2 lb of beans set to 1 lb on P1 (supposedly the hottest setting) in order to achieve enough heat to bring the roast to 2nd crack. I also always use use mine outdoors, as the amount of smoke this thing kicks out would fill my entire apt. No idea why it’s described as an indoor roaster. The rubber strip around the door actually warps when the roaster gets to a certain temp, creating large gaps for smoke to pour out.

    Adding another comment after a year and a half of dealing with this piece of junk. I'm finally done and will eBay it to buy something that works. I lost ANOTHER batch of coffee this morning because I got a phone call and stopped staring at the screen. The best I can say is that I get semi-consistent batches now, for the most part. But I have to remember to pick out the burnt beans that are stuck between the drum mesh and the paddles. And the ones that stick in the holes themselves. And good thing I have an air compressor in the garage where I roast, since that's needed to blow all the chaff out of the drum. But the idiocy of the nanny features are just the worst. At least one batch per month is wasted because I simply had something interfere with me giving it full attention and catching that ridiculous 30 second timer.
