    I have the 1600AB plus. One thing I've noticed is that if you start the roast with P5, you don't in fact get the highest temperature for the machine. You can start the roast at P1 and then after 10 seconds or so, switch to P5. The machine then reaches its highest temperature. Btw, it took me about 40 or so roasts to learn this and it happened out of sheer luck. 😅 Hope the advice helps.

      Hello. Do you mean when it starts in automatic mode or push P1 first and set it in manual and then push P5?

    Hi Thanks for the refresh on using the Behmor. I've had my 1600 Plus for a few years, and have encountered all of the frustrations you list. Glad I'm on the right track! Still, after getting used to it's quirks, it consistently delivers very even, and repeatable roasts.
    I love your cooling contraption! My solution for this is to use an electric leaf blower on low power. Once cooling cycle starts, I open the door of the Behmor and point the blower at the rotating drum obliquely, gently going back and forth. I'm doing this outside btw. Chaf will blow everywhere. After a 2 mins I remove the drum which is just warm to the touch, empty the beans into a bowl, and let the Behmor complete it's cooling cycle without the drum.

  • @thesilkenspider7778
    @thesilkenspider7778 4 года назад +2

    That's what I do!
    I load at least 8oz beans, up to 350g and set the drum aside, leaving the chaff tray in. I preheat by hitting 1/4 and start, and look for b temp to hit 250, then I hit off.
    I take out the chaff tray, carefully load my drum, put the chaff tray back in, hit 1lb, P1 and start. Then hit P5 (make sure P5 is flashing) and D.
    Once the A temp hits 310 then hit P3 and coast through 1st crack.
    If going for city to city + then pull as soon as you don't hear any more pops for 10-15sec. Turn off, remove chaff tray, VERY carefully remove the drum and externally cool the beans. Put the chaff tray back and hit cool so the machine completes the cool cycle (don't skip that step).
    If shooting for full city then pull beans and cool externally about 2 min after 1st crack (remember, you'll be in P3).

    With the stupid unattended setting the secret hack (atleast on the 1600 I own) is to roast a half pound but start it as a full pound. For most beans, even if you forget about it completely, you will get a passable result from it erroring out and going into cooling. For pretty much every other bean I have tried I can put it on 1 pound, manual full power then put a 12 minute alarm on my phone and I am back either just as first crack starts or within about 30 seconds first crack will start. From there you proceed as normal either deciding when to put it into manual cool down (usually from a lighter bean start point because it will still roast a bunch in cool down) or you get fancy, take it closer to where you want it and pull the roaster out and cool it down using an alternate method.

    In my experience using the built in cooling function leaves a lot to be desired, using some heat proof gloves and dumping the beans into a colander and hitting it with a blow dryer set to cool gets the beans cooled in about 3 minutes consistently.

    • @jimw5165
      @jimw5165 Год назад

      Use two colanders and pour the beans back and forth outside in a gentle breeze. The beans will cool quickly and the chaff will blow away. Absent breeze just rotate back and forth as you pour. Works great

    Love my 1600+. To cool more quickly, I just open the door and point in a table fan while letting the cool cycle run. Cool to the touch in just a few minutes. Yes, chaff goes everywhere. I roast in the garage and use a lawn blower to clean up.

    Thanks so much for this run-through. I ran my first ever batches through a 1600+ last night. I find this machine a case in which there’s almost too much information/opinion online and not enough in the manual (or not clearly explained there). But this video helped explain a number of questions I had. One bit of confusion is the manual stating P1 as Highest Heat Profile and P5 as Lowest. Maybe it's the nomenclature I'm unfamiliar with. I'm now looking forward to roasting again next week.

    My main gripe with these; so as there is no way to sample the roast you are reliant on that tiny window but more so you are viewing your roast under a yellow light which is not ideal for judging roast colour. This is very important as you will most likely be roasting in manual mode as demonstrated here.

    • @SweetMariasCoffee

      Yes, you can hear both 1st and 2nd cracks. If you are roasting decaf, you may have to get your ear a little closer and depend on your other senses. Roasting into 2nd crack is totally doable but roasting that dark on a consistent basis will wear down the machine faster, make cleanup more difficult and get you a tad bit closer to the danger zone.

      To have total control over when to start cooling, it's probably better to not depend on Rosetta Stone. You can use it to extend your roast time but hit "Cool" when you feel it's time. Yes, go ahead and pull your drum out of the roaster if smoke and chaff exiting the roaster aren't a concern. Be careful since everything will be hotter than lava and be sure to immediately put your Behmor into a cooling cycle once the drum is out to avoid damaging the machine.

    I've been trying to convince myself to purchase this model as I had previously used a Gene Cafe for about 8 years (and have ordered HUNDREDS of pounds of amazing Sweet Maria's green coffee) until it gave up the ghost. Now I know the Gene doesn't have all the bells and whistles (you can't track using artisan etc) but OH MY GOD this looks ridiculously and unnecessarily overly complicated and counter intuitive to use. With the Gene Cafe you have two controls to fiddle with: time and temp. You adjust the controls however you want and you have a great direct view of the beans. I like tech and in fact I track all of my BBQ adventures with some pretty sophisticated software (FireBoard) but......I don't see how this is "better" than what I could do before with less fuss using the Gene Cafe. Can someone help me understand?? :-)

    • @SweetMariasCoffee

      You are right. To be honest, the Behmor isn't the most intuitive roaster to control but once settling into it's auto and manual functions, it's a great machine, especially due to it's batch size, updates and control over drum speed. Every roaster has it's advantages and the Gene definitely is a winner when it came down to simplicity. We always advise that there isn't a "best" roaster but there is a roaster to fit everyone's needs and preferences. PS. Thanks for buying your coffee from us. We really appreciate it.

    I just bought this machine from you guys not that long ago. You have confused me on this....because on this video you have actually, as far as I understand it, started the Roast in the lowest power setting profile P5. The reason why I believe this is you have to start a roast with a profile (P1 is the hottest to start and P5 is the lowest to start) in automatic mode. Only after the roast is started can you go into the manual mode where it reverses: P5 then becomes the hottest profile 100% power and P1 becomes no power to the elements at all 0%. You can then go back and forth between the automatic mode and manual mode by hitting the 1 lb button if you want to go to automatic and hit a different profile. I am almost certain you have this wrong in your video?

      Please contact the experts at Behmor. They will definitely get you up and roasting ASAP. behmor.com/behmor-roaster-tech-support/ In the meantime, check the shaft with the square shaped hole on the right wall. This is where the square post of the drum should insert into. If it's not spinning, then there's probably a motor issue. If it does spin, there's an issue with how the drum is connecting to it.

      @@SweetMariasCoffee Thanks for your response and info. The merchant where I bought it from emailed Behmor and I also emailed them but they haven't gotten back to me yet. Yeah I think it might be the motor because nithing is moving 😏 Such a bummer because I was so excited to use it lol. Have you heard of this ever happening? It's brand new btw.

      @@newyou9914 So sorry this is happening to you. Behmors are normally very reliable machines. Behmor should be getting back to you soon. They normally get back to customers quickly.

      @@SweetMariasCoffee You were right! They did get back with me but their email ended up in my spam. It was a detached wire to the motor. It must have happened during shipping. I just opened the side panel, soldered it and now it works! Already roasted 2 beautiful batches!

    Can you do two patches back to back (without completing the cooling cycle)?

    • @SweetMariasCoffee
      @SweetMariasCoffee  3 года назад

      It's not recommended and the Behmor manual states to wait an hour between roasts.

    My 1600 plus is kind of annoying. Lol no beeps no app functionality. Not enough power. Not an accurate thermocouples to actual bean temp only wall temp. The chaff collector is okay but not great since you still get chaff everywhere and you can’t see your beans well. Roast Profiles are pointless...also preheating is difficult because it won’t let you start it again until it is around 151F...the display sucks to read outside...the light is also too dim and tungsten colored...This seems like a better first roaster with a lot of little improvements. The drum speed on this is way faster! Still I feel it could be much more improved for more more money.

      Heavy consecutive batches aren't recommended but in real world usage, you can probably do a few 1 pound roasts per session. Here's some folks are saying on Reddit. www.reddit.com/r/roasting/comments/f128fo/do_people_really_wait_an_hour_between_roasts_on/

    Heaven forbid in Gen Z America that we be asked to actually work at something like monitoring a bean roast. I mean, their parents did everything for them, so why wouldn’t their coffee maker? I find that engagement and it not doing everything for you is actually seen as a criticism, is all.
