Did you know that the design of ghostface mask actually came from a costume kit called alterian ghost factory that was released in 1990 that pre dates the original friendly faces mask by 2 years. It was a diy ghost costume kit that had a set of different faces that you had to paint and glue to a bed sheet. There were originally seen in the ghost factory kit but later made into friendly faces line that fun world produced and made into normal halloween masks. The mask that became ghostface was originally called the wailer in the ghost factory kit. It's very obscure and rare and the guy who made it actually pitched it to fun world i don't remember what happened but fun world used the guy's designs to make the friendly faces masks. They recently found a kit from the 1990 but it was one of the other masks that were apart of it and recently there are fans making fan made replica kits in case you want to make a ghostface wailer costume. There's a video about it by drowned boy productions explaining the true origin and history of the mask. You should check out.
They’re still super cheap if you’re buying the standard mask. They’ve been $9.99 since 2020 or so, which is dirt cheap compared to most Halloween masks. For the longest time they used to only be like $4 those were the days lol
@@beelzeboo It depends on which ones you get. If you’re looking for an original Fantastic Faces Ghostface (Scream 1) or a Fearsome Faces (Scream 2), you’ll probably end up paying several hundred dollars. Plus not many of them are in great condition anymore given their age. But yeah, the new ones are still affordable
@@VanDutch87 well the fantastic faces/fearsome faces masks were around since before Scream even existed, 1991 or so. They chose the already existing mask for the movie. Obviously the old Fun-World Fantastic/Fearsome lineup, Gen 1s, 2s, old glow in the dark T-Stamps and EU stamps aren’t really made anymore… You made it seem like people can’t afford Ghost-Face masks anymore in your initial comment. All the stuff you’re talking about in your reply to me are very specific variants and molds of masks that have existed over the years and are hunted by collectors. - When my point was that official Ghost-Face masks are still made and are still very affordable. There are also many affordable new variations of these masks produced today.
One of our go to movies during the late 90`s. Me and the boys made a lot of scream inspired movies back then. We had several home made masks made out of paper or cardboard before we got our hands on the real one. I bought the buck hunting knife later in 1999 for about 800nok (81 dollars) and still have it and the mask+costume in our collection to this day. Great piece of history~
Truthfully, call me cliche, but the original look just works and it's all down to one thing: The mask. Watching the Scream films, last October, what I found was the masks (though not wildly different) just felt too clean; Scream 5, especially, stood out to me because the mask looked too well-produced for what's meant to be a store-bought costume in-universe. *That's* why I love the original, it looks like a rubber mask you would get in a shop and, watching this video, it now makes perfect sense as to why. Excellent video and I will definitely check out Drowned Boy Productions videos to learn more about one of my favourite cinema slashers.
I remember this mask as a kid before Scream got big and sweet Jesus I was so scared of this mask. I have no idea why, but the mask itself is so haunting and powerful, it stuck with me for years to the point I was too afraid to even watch Scream for years. Of course I got over it, but it haunted me for years. Ah, Millennial trauma.
@Mariana D'Amelio There's something to that. Supposedly black and white masks remind our brains of skulls, and thus of death, or possibly of predators. It's the same reason a lot of people find clowns scary and psychologically, exactly why so many stalkers and slasher villains are masked. It's supposed to remind you of death.
This is interesting. I do remember E.U. having masks that looked HELLA like the 'Scream' masks , but a decade before .I just picked one up from the mid 80,s .
Its very much impossible to not have fun in that costume. :) Everyone loves you, fears you, or at least knows who you are and usually you can get some super fun jumpscares on people.
I remembered when that costume was out and sold in our local grocery store. And when Scream came out I laughed a bit remembering seeing it at the store.
Best costume ever. Ive spoken to both Cynthia bergstrom and Nate and Doug Ragon about the robe. The masks were always common knowledge but the robe nothin was known for years. It was never on the market for sale it was always that cheap funworld crap one. It only came about in early to Mid 2000s when people tried making them, then all the info started comin out about who has them now etc. the scream 1 robe theres almost no pics online. Because the owner corey hersh is stingy with it. The s23&4 robes theres pics everywhere and video reviews and comparisons bt the s1 original has been kept in secrecy or just forgotton about
This is crazy. I used to watch you years ago when you would upgrade action figures and such. Now you’re into horror that’s sick. Can’t wait to see your work on the ghost face mask.
Wow man I can’t believe how young you are it’s craziness I was there opening night at the theatre and I was 20 years old when I watched Scream and I was overwhelmingly happy for Wes Craven because I knew he had another monster hit on his hands and I’ve loved it ever since. I actually have a 1996 robe custom made by John Gritton who was recommended by the one and only Cynthia Bergstrom as to somebody that could replicate her original design really well. Definitely already following Douglas he does have a fantastic channel as well. I was lucky enough to buy a fearsome faces gen 1 when it first came out and I still have it to this day as well as a generation 2 fearsome from the full costume I bought later that year. And hell yeah I remember when the masks hit the shelves I could’ve bought 100 of them back then if only we knew then what we know now lol but it is one of the few stories where I really won being a horror fan by getting a few copies and keeping them in great shape all of these years. So often you come across something you had when you were a kid that’s worth a fortune and impossible to find now, but in this case I lucked out. I started typing this before I finished your video and holy shit you actually have a quote from John himself! Thank you so much for validating my ghostface cosplay I’ve had people say they don’t think it looks authentic and it was literally handsewn by John Gritton as I mentioned before with full praise and recommendation from Cynthia Bergstrom herself. I’m extremely proud of my robe and so many people think screamrobes is the only option for something that really looks authentic. Not true 👍 thanks again for this video Chris it was awesome!
Yeah I was 6 years old when scream came out and my brother who was a senior in high school took me with his friends to see it. I didn't sleep for 3 months and avoided the basement at all cost.
I picked up the mask right after the movie came out and still have it hanging on my book shelf today . It freaks my kids out all the time when they walk by it, forgetting its there starting out at you !!! I would love to pick up the Buck 120 tbo. I might have to get myself a late Christmas gift 😁🙃
Awesome suit and an awesome video! I’ve got a cool cosplay idea that I’d love to see you do. If you’re a fan of the movie Jingle All The Way then you should do a Turbo Man suit, always wanted to see a real one
The Buck 120s are very readily-available here in the US where Buck is based. Not sure if they import to Australia, though. Worth checking out for sure if possible
The same thing happened to me. Scream traumatized me at 12 years old for weeks but now I love these movies but it's still difficult for me to watch the beginning of the first.
9 years old watching a horror movie like Scream, that is disturbing. I was an adult when I saw it and I thought it was too raw and rough for that generation.
I love the Michael Myers mask in the back. I was so close to being in the movie Halloween kills and Ends I auditioned 6X I definitely thought I got a part because David Gordon Green really liked me. My dad actually do the producer Mustafaa Akkad in Syria, but I didn’t want to name drop. Anway I flew back and forth from Detroit to Wilmington, North Carolina on my own dime. That’s what you do when you believe in yourself put it on a credit card lol I remember watching the first streaming theaters. It was a half a day at school. I think it was during Christmas break or something I couldn’t sit with the cool kids, but I remembered I kept saying to myself that one day I’m going to be on the big screen thankfully it’s starting to happen. ❤ I love your channel. I always thought the outfit and mask was inspired by the giggling green ghosts from the old scooby doo show. similar draped cloaks and the faces are similar too. I wonder if that may be the case for the original mask itself
Seen it on my 13th Birthday, just when it came out. Same day my former girlfriend gave me guitar lessons. I was playing One by Metallica half of the day😅 Good times.

Definitely an iconic suit. And one of my favorites of any slasher, very simple but very effective.
