As I embark on this “new journey “ of lathe turning, these videos are absolutely one of the greatest resources of information! Thank you for advancing my learning and understanding of all the aspects of turning! I simply can’t get enough of your knowledge! THANK YOU!!!
Tomislav your teaching is perfect to my way of learning. Thank you so much. I’m a 71yr old retired ME I have learned an a great amount from you. I’m a woodworker that turns sparingly and you keep helping me build my skills.
A talented woodturner did say to his admirer Ray, you too can be as expert as me if attention to me you will pay. Attention to you I do pay then replied novice Ray, but I can’t even keep a sharp edge on my steel without turning it into a beak. I’ve nothing to hide the expert replied and I’m sure, given time, that you too can turn sawdust and glue and other things too into shavings and dust if you tried. The shavings and dust is the easy part replied Ray feeling blue, but I’ve been told it will take another nine years and by then I will be eighty two 😢 Great video and thank you for taking the time to share 🌞
Yes, one day I'll upgrade my 100mm jaws to a set of step jaws. Ever since you and Richard made me decide I want to need to remove fewer tenons from my bowls my creativity in design has gone up. I feel like I've got a lot of technical stuff down and now I need to get better at interesting design, which comes from limiting your tools and forces you to do more with less. Enjoy your jaws and thanks for the demo, Tomislav.
Gday Tommi, I’ve bought all my vicmarc gear direct from vicmarc in Brisbane australia. Marco is great to deal with. There opening hours are a little strange though. From memory mon to thurs 7 am to 3pm. AEST. I either ring or email and Marco gets back to me very quickly, I’ve purchased my own gear and chucks for the turning shed I belong to. Other option pick up your vicmarc gear when you come on down to Oz to demonstrate. The video is as usual fantastic. You certainly have a knack for teaching and instruction. Your descriptions about bowl design and footings is about the best I’ve seen. I’d be happy to use to show my trainees at our shed. Thanks for taking time out of your productIon turning schedule to make these great videos Tommi
Hi Greg, I did wanna buy direct from Marco,we did spoke a lot beacuse of the sponzorship, last customs fee almost cost as much as the chuck it self so hopefully my customs will change something soon, that is why I order from Hope woodturning ☺️
These Vic Marc jars are fantastic but most people either do not have access to them or cannot afford them. Plus most of us long time turners have chucks of different makes that won't accept these step jaws. Only Nova sells a small sized set that is similar. It is too expensive and too much trouble to get rid of my 10 chucks to move over to the Vic marc. If I were beginning my woodturning journey now, I would only buy Vic Marc Chucks and Jaws because they are the best.
Ofcourse, no need to get rid of your chucks, there are a lot of good manufacturers , oneway is great as well, I might get one so nothing wrong . Nova, sorby, axminster ,record power all good brands 😀
Somehow I missed this video a few months ago. I'm glad I found it because I now realize my issue with my Nova step jaws. The Nova jaws are not quite the same proportion in the three diameters as the Vicmarc step jaws. The Nova jaws are not well designed from the 1st (smallest dia.) to 2nd step. Step 2 needs to be bigger because it's almost impossible to ever use the smallest step diameter. I see the Vicmarc has a lot more room to allow a foot to reach the smallest step diameter. So apparently, Nova did a poor job in trying to copy this design. If I ever get a new lathe I might just start over with some Vicmarc chucks. Thank you for your explanation!
Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge. When using inn er step for a bowl doesn’t the outer step prevent you from finishing the bottom part of the bowl?
You mentioned a shop in France, but I don't see a link. Thanks for this discussion on chucks, I have really struggled to find any good information about the chuck to fit on my 1200x460 lathe. It came with an unbranded 95mm body and some fairly small jaws. In the UK, I've only found a couple of chucks over 100mm. I'm also struggling on the value proposition of VM120 plus step jaws against Supernova2 and a 3 jaw set for €150 less. I suspect the quality of the Vicmark (and Axminster) are better but unless that translates into wearing out much faster maybe that is not too critical?
Anything from nova, sorby, record power, Axminster will serve you very well, they have big range of jaws that most turners will be happy with. I like vicmark for really supreme quality but all these mentioned above are not too far behind , just avoid anything unbranded and from temu like shops.
Hi Tomi, I have just found this video - thanks, it is full of great information. I have a question - if you have made a mark from the jaws (by mistake) on the foot area of a piece, what is the best way to get rid of it please? Take care and all the best to you and your family. Phil (from South West Engalnd)
Thank you Phil, Jam a bowl on jam chuck is best way, but you can also mount it between centers, just use a bit of wood so the cone doesn't damage bottom
Sorry Tomislav, I thinkI may have bought the last set of step jaws for the VM 120 from Simon Hope a month ago. He must be waiting for more stock from Australia. They do force you to make the correct profile on a bowl and are very useful.
Are you saying that the jaws for Vicmarc chucks are not interchangeable between chuck bodies? That seems like a huge disadvantage…. I have a few Axminster chucks of various sizes and all the jaws can go on any of the chuck bodies…
Its big differents between vm100 and 120 especially 150 so you can interchange between 120 and 150 but not with smaller 100 chuck.... Pretty much all other manufacturers like axminster have 80mm and 100mm diameter chucks and jaws have same hole pattern, as does vm90 and vm100 from Vicmark.... But 120 and 150 are much bigger and more buffed up versions
I was surprised to see minimal difference between the SK114 and SK100. I do wonder if the axminster choice which people see as an advantage is really a compromise. Particularly when if people are serious, they tend to own multiple chuck bodies.

Thank you soo much for watching and comment, and for kind words
I will try and make up a few 'Jam Chucks' when I have some time and see how they work over the next few weeks/months. Cheers. Phil

Great tutorial Tomislav - cheers+++++ Have a great day.
Thank you for your expertise and for sharing it.

Love the story sir, much like Yoda spoke... Thank you for watching

Thank you for that very informative lesson on different chuck jaws.
Thank you for watching
Thanks for the good explanation on the step jaws. May God bless

I haven't hold step jaws from nova so can't tell you much on that but once you do transfer to vicmark you will wonder how you did without

No as I mostly finish outside completely and then flip around for inside
Well described and explained.
Timely info as I am currently looking at investing in new chucks for my larger lathe (so I won’t need an adapter anymore).
This is a great adition to jaws collection 😀

@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Thanks Tomi
My setup is the VM150/big shark, VM120/std, Axminster SK100/O'donnell, Nova SuperNova2/std, VM escoulen, a small hurricane and a collet chuck.
That is nice setup

Glad you bought them😉 I'll get my hands on it soon👍
I have a set of step jaws, and I have exactly this experience! It forces me to not make weird bowls, because they wont fit in the chuck!
Nicely said 😉
The best solution is always to buy more stuff!
Sometimes,but really not nessesary

Changing chuck jaws is only slightly less annoying than changing guitar strings. 🙂
How many bowls per hour? Bph I’m at about 4-5 , so it’s time to upgrade!😂
Last batch was around 30 bowls and plates in around 4 hours....
