Great video. Lots of very good information!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great advice! Thank you!!
Great tips.!! 👍🏼👍🏼
Love the fart! Thank you Micael for pointing out the mistakes that most of your patreons are experiencing and then sharing them with us.
Hi Widell I think the problem is they are sending semi-close-ups for Macro photography. That's why when they crop big they lose a lot of resolution. Some of the pics I saw from them are not Macro they more fit landscape Nature photography.
Thanks Micael - I struggle with Lightroom but your exporting advice has taught me a lot and will make a huge difference.
This is the kind of videos that helps me most! Simple and great! Thanks a lot.
This is one reason I like the Sony R cameras, the ability to crop and still have high resolution. I have the a7R3 and a7R5, but yes I plan on buying the Laowa 85mm f5.6 as I currently only have the Sony 90mm f2.8 (1x).
Focus on the eyes can be very difficult with insects. They often have compound eyes, and even when they're precisely in focus, they look blurry or pixelated.
Ron, I agree that getting detail in compound eyes is difficult, but I think maybe you're conflating two different root causes here. Blurriness will be down to either incorrect focus or less than ideal lens performance. Visible pixelation, on the other hand, can only result from using a low-resolution source and/or over-cropping (zooming).
Even when you nail both of these causes though, my own experience has been that moire can create further challenges. A similar problem occurs with feathers in bird close-ups.
Amazing simple and to the point video. Absolutely love it !
Some really useful info thank you Michael and will certainly be applying some of that wisdom.
excellent tute thanks
Thanks! Love your advices 🙏👌
Micael. Fully agree with all your comments, but I feel you've not covered two additional factors -method of display and viewing distance. Pixelation is obviously going to become more apparent the larger the display and the closer the viewer. It would be good to hear your recommendations for minimum resolution limits for the various options.
Although I have a macro lens (1:1) and a couple of adaptors, I often don't have them with me, particularly when I'm traveling. However, some of my best shots of insects have been taken using nothing more than the long end of my Nikon Z50-250 on the front of a Z50 (21MP). Granted, the eventual cropped images wouldn't stand up to being printed at large scale, but at 100% on a 4K monitor and viewed from a typical distance, the results are more than adequate. We're not talking ants and money spiders here, of course 😊
Diffraction! That’s what I’ve been doing wrong!!! Thank you!!!
For you Micael Widell and you guys in general. Between Laowa 60mm and Canon 100mm L .... both macro lenses... one do 2:1 and the other only 1:1... with and Canon 5D Mark IV.... what lens you choose and why ?
I would pick the Laowa 60mm. So much more fun with 2x magnification. Also consider the Laowa 100mm that comes with electrical aperture control.
@@MicaelWidell Hello
Eh pah I never thought you would answer me :D
Look, I've been following this channel for a long time and it was because of you that I turned my taste for photography to macro. And of course I had to get a 60mm Laowa right away.... what I really wanted was the 100mm one but it hasn't been easy to find used in my country. I did find the canon 100mm L and I was in doubt whether to keep the Laowa or stay with the Canon, but the only advantage I see in the canon is being able to take a portrait photo because it has the autofocus, otherwise I prefer Laowa without a doubt. I think I'll keep it :D
Look, keep up the good work you've been doing. Thanks
Micael, Isn't 1x1 macro lens of the FF system 1.5 macro lens on the APSC system and 2x macro lens on the MFT system?
You are completely right that a smaller sensor will make the subject appear bigger.
Good advice. This got me thinking, is it possible, or wise, to use an tele-extender with a Lawoa macro on the Canon RF full frame system?
It might work. But in general you get the best results if you use extenders with the list of compatible lenses.
Maybe getting a high mp camera can help. I find a 50 mp camera gives me the option to crop significantly and still have around ~24mp.
I have a Laowa 100mm, and I'm curious as to why the aperture ring has a dot in place of the number 16?
Hmm maybe because it would be too tight to put the number 16 there?
Personally, I don't find it a problem using a 1 x 1 macro lens; sometimes I have to back off a bit if it's a butterfly and I want to get all of it in, as I use mine on a crop sensor (Tamron 90mm macro on Canon 90D). I also find that the Canon 90D sensor lets me crop quite a bit in post-processing. My biggest problem is the depth of field/ pinpointing the focus. I imagine using a 2x macro lens like the Laowas would be even more difficult, though I don't doubt that they are excellent lenses. Finally, I like the image stabilization on this lens, which does help for macro photography (a bit), as it's also an excellent lens for other photographic genres.
I prefer to shoot at less than 1:1. I have over 40mp and crop a lot. This gives more depth of field and auto focus can be used on my camera/lens combination. I find if I get to close, I like the images less as depth of field is so small. I don't want to stack as I try to get the insects in flight. Most people will view online at around 2mp for 1080p or maybe around 8MP for a 4 k monitor so I only export my images for web viewing at those sizes. I do some printing and even at my largest size A3+ I find 10- to 20 MP is fine. If I get new gear I will look at a higher MP camera and have no wish to get a lens with higher magnification.
@@paulstickley4819, I agree. I print my favorites to hang on the wall, but most of my photos go on Flickr. I also started a RUclips channel, but RUclips doesn't do my photographs justice.
i've been told a micro 4/3rds camera will give you greater depth of field. I follow a few OM-1 shooters, and the depth of field in their non stacked images is incredible.
Hello Michael, Much appreciate your videos. Can you advise (with disclaimers of course) of any x-mount Marco len(s) for negative scanning? No lens have ever mentioned a flat focus field (+1:1)? Thanks
I think most macro lenses work well for scanning. I never test the flatness of focusing field myself, so I am not sure what lenses are good and not so good at that. Maybe look at some other reviews that look into such things.
@@MicaelWidell Thanks
i always use auto mode for macro, is it ok or bad??
Are you happy with your photos? Then it's fine. I prefer manual mode. Check my macro settings video for details.
@@MicaelWidell i am not really good with manual, i wish i can.
I crop a lot. But I don't do macro either.
Cropping basically makes your camera sensor smaller, and therefore worse. You can still reduce the pixel resolution for a web upload without losing resolution. as the debayer already upscales the images, going to half the res or looking at an image at 50% or lower is the better way. so don't crop smaller than maybe 3000 pixels wide if you end up looking at it on a phone. Since you want that 50% to remain true. Most phone are like 2160x1080 pixels nowadays.
Lossless jepgs do exist, but you won't come across them.
Using a macro lens with my smartphone, diffraction has been one of my biggest opponents.
It’s all about the sensor my friend, Don’t get me wrong but maybe using an additional light source would help, I used in the past flash lights for my camera shots 🤷🏻
Very helpful video Micael. I’ve been cropping like your Patreon subscribers with a resultant loss of sharpness. Of the Raynox 150 and 250 lenses, which would be best if connected to my 85mm macro lens? I’d appreciate your thoughts.
I would buy the dcr250 because it gives a great amount of magnification, but to be honest I never tried the 150.
@@MicaelWidell I don't often shoot super high magnification myself, so I got the Raynox 150, and it's worked pretty well with every lens I've tried it with. It lets me get tight closeups without forcing me to get TOO close.
I'm looking to upgrade my old camera. Would you say the M50 Mkii can get the same quality pictures as your a7iii? I was thinking of pairing with the 65mm Laowa lens for a super compact macro setup. Would i benefit in image quality getting something like an EOS RP or R10?
The M50 doesn't quite have the same dynamic range, but I think most people would not be able to spot the difference in the photos - it is minimal.
trevlig helg :)
2:51 no way that this is a 1:1 Macro shot :D
Maybe people just dont shoot at the closest focus point so they dont get the real 1:1 Macro and thats why they have to crop so much.
Haha no sorry it wasn't 1:1, but I wanted to illustrate the point :) Very few insects (at least in Europe) cover the whole sensor at 1:1
Thanks for the video, I learned about common mistakes such as farting in an Apple store.
Interested with the Words on your Blue Tee.
Is it Chinese, Japness or Korean wordings?
By the way, can you share with us how to Protect yourself and avoid hazardous insects or snakes while you are searching or taking photos in the forest?
It says "neko" in Japanese which means cat :)
When I walk somewhere were there might be snakes I wear rubber boots. We don't have that many dangerous snakes in Sweden though - I have actually never seen a poisonous one. We don't have much of a problem with hazardous insects where I live so I don't have any good advice for that.
In my eyes as a nature photographer since 1979, the biggest mistake when doing nature photography are to use flash, you can always see that the light are unnatural and that I do not like. An other thing I do not like is when image of a subject are too close and you do not see anything around the subject in it´s natural environment ! So a 2x Macro Lens are not always the best ! (Macro photographer since 1980).
Some macro subjects can't be photographed w/o an artificial light source, so I'd hardly call that a "mistake".
@@taylorhickman84 Tripods was invented for more than 150 years ago !
@@cameraprepper7938 How's that tripod work on a moving bug on a flower being blown around by the breeze when your depth of field is less than 1/4"?
@@taylorhickman84 ^
You did not mention ISO which can often be too high and many use zoom Lenses that often not are good for macro work. I have no problem with resolution and sharpness when I fx save an image in 1560x1060pixels at 560KB. (Macro photographer since 1980).
Then, the aame pictures did it on the film era, I am a photographer for more than 50 years, how you judge and consider that ones? What your criticism are based on? You yourself said " there are beautiful photos..." " but..." there are or not BEAUTIFUL ? PERIOD , for me at least, technisicallities (?) are not so important, if a phot is beautiful, that's it, thank you
