  • Inspired by Escher's work, this tutorial takes a look at creating tessellations in Inkscape (version 0.92.4). We'll discuss importing images, drawing polygons, rotations, scaling, creating clones, editing paths (adding nodes, snapping them, splitting and merging them) and combining segments of different paths. Enjoy!

Nice one, thanks for explanation. Would ask what OS you've been using, I suspect linux, maybe..?

Thanks! I'll probably redo the video for Inkscape 1, using a slightly different workflow and pointing out some other features. And yes, I'm on Linux.

What was the point of creating the clones and removing them? After that just duplicates were rotated and snapped to the initial trace

Good question! The overall idea is that regular hexagons tessellate 2D space, which is why they are used as initial shapes (i.e. a central one surrounded by rotated clones). The clones connected to the sides we choose to trace (you can choose to trace different sides than those chosen in the tutorial) turn out to be redundant. However, these clones can still be useful during the tracing process to check whether we're doing things properly. Hope that helps!
