To create the brand new Grand Prix 5000 tyre the German brand have completely overhauled the ever popular GP4000 II. They claim a 12% reduction in rolling resistance and a 20% increase in puncture protection - sounds pretty good! The GP 5000 also marks the brand's entry into the road tubeless market as there are both clincher and tubeless versions available for this model.

Let us know what you think of the new GP 5000 from Continental, would you like a set on your bike? 👇
GCN Tech actually Im right before changing my tires. Right now Im on Conti 4000 and dont know if I should go with 5000 or try Vittoria tires.
I just wrap lots and lots of string around my rim. No need for tyres
yes, send them round.
I have had huge issues with the S4000s so far (mostly grip and roundness which sucks). I have also had huge issues with competition tubulars (roundness and ease of installation). Dunno if I would try this brand again, I would go for the expensive lines of Vittoria.
Depends on the price. Had the gp4000 for almost 6000km and still about a third in the front and 2/5 in the rear tread. Now they are quite squared off, so cornering is a bit weird
At 35€/tire thats quite some mileage/€.
Hope that they still have a 23mm version. Can't stand it when tires are way too wide for the rim
Best thing about the GP5000? The 4000 sii will be cheaper now!
Yeah, my first thought was to stock up on clearance 4000s's
Not sure why that would be such a plus, considering that at 35€ per tire they are quite cheap compared to most other tires in the same class. Most start at 40€
So true!
The bad thing is that the gp 4000 will dissapear and that we won't have one of the best tyres out there for 30-35 euros/pounds...
@@aitoraltuna I'm not so sure. Conti will surely produce them for some years, since it' the golden standard and therefore hard to simply get off peoples minds.
Also, after some time, the gp 5000 will probably drop down to 35€/£ and be similar to the gp4000
The most bling GCN bike????
Track Standing segment?! Proper good presenting skillz that Oli.
first time actually presenting on the bike and then even track standing if i saw that right.
when i learned to do track stands, i found after like 30 minutes, and riding backwards in a circle on my track bike, and doing no hands track stands... there is just one thing i could not do... pour a proper cup of coffee and present it like Manon. even now in my 60s i still track stand at lights (unless downhill). a skill you don't forget, even if you did not do it for 20 years.
That Trek Madone with 858 NSWs though.
Yea. I paused it at 0:33, superimposed my face over Ollie's, and fantasized for about 10 minutes.
And Fizik R1 knit shoes.
But... MISMATCHED BOTTLES!
Perfectionism is a weakness not a strength.
And now it is obsolete :/
Loved the chemistry part. I was pleased to understand it!
Great presentation Ollie! Smooth, just a bit cheeky and super informative!!
Ollie, with your detailed reviews you are the greatest addition to the world cycling community right after Continental GP 5000!
I love the comprehensive research done:) Keep up the excellent work!
Just got mine in the mail today. No issues with installation and I'm not an experienced bike mech. Just needed a plastic lever to get that last bit over. Can't give any real review cause I just rode them around the neighborhood, but one immediate first impression, they ride so much smoother than my stock Bontrager tires.
Ohh nice I have Bontrager r1 .my mate says it'll ride like a new bike and it is new lol 🍺🍺🚲😁
Ollie's totally killing it at GCN! Lively, enthusiastic and funny. Loved the review too.
...but what is vectran 5:32 ?
Nice video! The music, the video cutting ... I had to remember the old Top Gear videos during the Clarkson/Hammond/May era. :)
Yep at moment using conti 4 season, doing the LEJOG 29th June 2019 going to give these tyres ago thanks GCN good review
I'm ordering a pair of these continental GP 5000 this week! Can't wait for them!
I have a pair of 32 mm GP5000 on my bike and really like them. Glad they make them in a 32! While Ollie’s track stand was impressive, I was more impressed by his explanation of the chemistry of the fiber used for the Vectran Breaker 😉
Perfect timing! I just blew a 1/2cm hole in my GP4000’s running over glass an hour ago!
I have the GP 4000s II on my 3 bikes and love them. Can't wait to try the 5000's. Great vid.
Ollie is starting to 'rock'! Excellent video. Conti 5000's in my future.
Great vid Oli. Big fan of the gp4000. The 5000s sound even better. Glad to hear conti now make a tubeless road tyre too.
Great video Ollie, I used to love your presenting style on that other website you worked for and always loved your tongue in cheek humour as well as getting the point across! 👍🏻👍🏻 Has anyone ever said you like scarilly like a young Ray Mears( the survival expert bloke on TV)🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for your GREAT review! I just ordered 2 ea. 700x25 tubeless ones for my Cannondale System six with Knot 64 wheels. I ride daily to work and really rely upon my tires. I'm a big fella (230lbs) and run 120psi (rear) & 100 in the front. I also use "finish line" tire sealant.
Well I'm looking forward to the 4000s going on sale.
Got these on my bike. I'm ancient so very used to thinner tyres and have 23s. They are really confidence inspiring and because they are now a few years old I was able to get them on sale.
I think the thing I notice which most surprised me is the deform really well whne encountering things you would expect to give pinch punctures without doing so.
Great information and thanks again for your help
Love Ollies enthusiasm for the new tyres.......... I'm feeling the same way about them actually!!!
Any video with Ollie in gets an instant like
After years on GP4000 2s I switched to the 5000s (25mm clinchers) and love 'em. An even smoother ride, great grip and they seem to roll faster. No punctures to date either. The only areas I still have a question mark are wear and compound deterioration in hot sun. In the sun the compound does start to change, seeming to shrivel a bit on the surface, which the 4000s also did. But they're still riding great.
@@cc-000 I haven't been riding the past couple of years now 🙁 so no update on the above I'm afraid. I'd choose them again for sure.
I will definitely have to try these next spring!
Really excited by this. I’ve held off going tubeless until Conti got in the game. I hope conti make the 4 Season in tubeless too
Look at Ollie's grin at 6:00. Hell yeah I want these tires! Now what to do with he 2 pair of 4000sII I have on the shelf...
I'll be getting a pair for sure. It's about time Continental stepped up to the tubeless game.
As much as I was interested in the tyre, that burnished bronze effect with the paint job looks unbelievable, and not something that comes across in the still photos I've seen. What an absolute weapon of a bike.
29 June 2019
I started cycling LEJOG and got a pair of the new GP5000
I am on day nine 2 days left, no punctures and the tyres are fast and roll beautifully. But I admit I must be lucky so far great tyre
Great video Ollie
I to am worried that I get excited about a new tyre and just want to have them on my bike and see how they feel out on the road.
Words can’t describe the bike...
Got my 5000's fitted a few weeks back but, still have 4000's on my other bike and the difference is quite noticeable. More grip on the corners and faster. It might be just because they are new but, they feel good to me!
GCN is the Top Gear of bicycle shows. I could listen to Ollie narrate the dictionary! Great Stuff :)
Love that paint job! Super nice bike!
Don't worry Olly, I was embarrassingly enthusiastic about it too.
I am more excited about a legendary bike tire being renewed than any new bike releases.
That fuckin profile picture...
0:55 that's one sexy box
Fascinating detail on the composition and manufacturers stated gains. But Ollie, you're riding them - can you feel any difference?
I've used the Continental 4000SII religiously until a good friend got me hooked on the SWorks Turbo tire.
Conti definitely has my attention!!
Looking forward to more reviews. Looking at the 700x25
Best get out there and wear out my stash of GP4000s ;D Great to see Continental innovating and helping us with out marginal gains. Interested to see if they price it the same, there were always nice deals to be had for the 4000s.
Very good video. Congrats!!!
Love the track stand and would love a new pair of 5000’s
Awesome, now I know what my new tubeless will be!
Had no prob with this vid. Looks like he was just presenting technical facts. It was cool to see how they're made. I've been running Conti's exclusively for years now, after having tried other brands, and have been very pleased with their performace all around. Between Gatorskin, 4 Season, and Grand Prix I've been pretty well covered.
Three things you never skimp on: Shoes, mattresses, and tires
Sweet ride Ollie, and the track stand was a nice touch
Cheers
Phew, almost pulled the trigger on a new set of tyres today. Thanks Ollie, you saved the day! Am now leaving stick it notes randomly around the house with “gp 5000 “ and Dad, Xmas on them.
🤣
Had Gatorbacks, waited 6 months for the GP 5000 s but only one made to this side of the pond. I put it on my front wheel.
I've been using the GP5000's pretty much since they came out, done countless miles on them, I think they're a great durable fast tyre, I even went to length of putting a pair on a hire bike on holiday last year, sad but true! I'm a fan of the Conti GP 4 seasons too which I run on my winterbike, they give me good confidence in naff conditions and have yet to let me down.
Do you know how big is the difference in the wet/cold between the 5000 and 4 season ?
Very TOP GEARish. Enjoyed this review.
Your presenting skills remind me of Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear. Great work, keep it up.
I missed a lot of what you were saying because I was drooling over that Trek Madone. That is, by far, the sexiest bike I've ever seen. Especially with that paint job. Lucky man.
awesome, thank u cant wait for it to be in the consumer mkt.
Ollie is a great in the tec and fun too! Sure I will try GP 5000 after seen this video.
Let us know how you find them!
Loved 4000's - now love the 5000's. And have never had a puncture (on my road bike).
Finally, tubeless tire from conti!
Ok, at first one question: how about the tubeless version of the GP 5000? :)
I‘ve watched the vid several times now and that just because it reminds me so much too the old Top Gear vids during the Clarkson, Hammond and May era. I‘m so impressed by your presenting skills ... awesome!
I was really sad about the fact that Matt had left GCN because I really liked his personality. But I have to admit: you are great. I love your attitude and skills. I hope you‘ll stay as long as possible at GCN.
It would be nice for you to do a head to head comparison of the 4000 & 5000s. Over a course that was flat, up down and twisty wet and dry. For the wet bit, squirt the road down with a fire hose. To validate if you can notice the improvements.
Only over time will you be able to testify to their durability and pucnture resistance.
Can Ollie make a video, how to make a track stand?
it is not hard to learn, but don't clip in, use runners... point tire in one direction... slightly on an uphill is best. it's all in the feel
It’s about time it went tubeless, that’s what I’ve been waiting for.
Finally!!! Tubeless from Continental... Christmas is on!!! :)
Explicating the lower rolling resistance of the new 5000's vs the previous 4000's, at 1:40 Ollie says "and a higher 330tpi - that's threads per inch - carcass". The set of new GP4000SII's in my closet came in Conti boxes which display a diagram of the carcass indicating "330 tpi". Ditto for a set of Attack/Force Contis I have. So the 330tpi (actually three 110tpi plies I believe) is not "new" to the 5000's.
Indeed Olly, these new GP5000 Chili’s in tubeless look refreshingly delicious! Now if you please, I’ll have a spot of tea whilst I wait.
Pair of 25mm tubless for me thank you very much. Only bought a pair of 4000 SII in June 😩
Can we have a video on Ollie’s bike🔥
It's coming soon 👍
Thats good! wow i love that bike! @@gcntech
Yes what a beauty!
Ollie's talking about the rubber and I'm looking at that amazing Madone paint.
Let’s not forgot those shoes Ollie is wearing
6:00 Ollie looks like he's so proud of himself for knowing about the Vectran compound being used in Mars Rovers haha
I have the tubeless ones and absolutely love them
Geeking out right along with you. Unfortunately the season is pretty much over here. No matter how good they are, they won't seem much better when my bikes up on the trainer. But I'll definitely be picking up a pair for my carbon climber before the spring... I've been a die hard of the 4000s for my carbon and the Gatorskins for my Ti touring bike. Conti is amazing - better performance and fewer punctures is a great combination!
Enjoy them when they arrive Christopher 👍
I put 5000km on a set of GP5000s (with tubes) this past year riding all over B.C Canada. Not a single puncture or flat.
Oli I love your bike paint job....
Good job, great presenting, lots of facts. Like listening to Jeremy Clarkson
That bike is sick Ollie!
This is the best news in the bicycling industry for 2019, plus the added bonus of offering tubeless?! Conti has outdone themselves!
What a beautiful bike mate
I've been using the GP 4000s II and am delighted that Conti was able to increase the puncture resistance while still improving the tyre in all other respects, too. That was no small feat! I'll definitely consider the GP 5000 once my stock of 4000s II has been used. As for the tubeless version -- I'm glad Conti is going to provide it, but it's a non-starter for me because of the sealant. The sealant makes tyre changes messy, has a limited lifespan and must be regularly removed and replaced, adds weight to the wheel, and can ruin your kit if you puncture and it sprays on you while your wheel is spinning (it can take a few revolutions before a puncture seals). For mountain or gravel, tubeless makes a lot of sense. For smoothly paved and clean roads, tubes are still the best.
@@Bungle2010 get the tubeless road tires and your puncture resistance increase by 900% and more speed by 5%
He today is the day I got my giant contend tires changed to continental 5000 with continental thin tubes,. Feel the difference imidiately and for me is all about endurance so hopefully the viber will last me protection. Bc having the inner racing thin inner tires makes me bit afraid:) today I had an incredible ride with those tires.. Totally recommended
Classic Ollie with just a pinch of Clarkson. Love it!
More than a pinch, at least a dash, maybe a gravy. It's a lot of Clarkson. (And I'm not complaining.)
I love the GP4000 SIII, so the new GP 5000 seems very interesting. When are they going to hit the stores?
today
Ollie usually speaks as if he's announcing something. Emphasizing Just about Every Other Word. It's super weird when he's doing a casual segment or vlog, but it fits better in formal review videos like these. Great review.
Hello GCN and folks,
Ollie well done, a convincing presentation of a doubtless remarkable product.
What about that sensational stunning paint job!
Is it made from the genius of colourburnstudio?
Are som
that Trek though 😍😍😍
Had to watch 3 times due to blind bike wow 😍
Used the 4000s ii’s got fed up with side wall splits 5 season before last, didn’t ride 4000’s this season. I wounded if lighter for the 5000’s also means thinner. I would have to see some side wall speck to change back. No punctures or side walls list season on new tyres.
i bought a pair recently and LOVE them. i compared them with my specialized roubaix tires. GP 5000 ARE faster, feel better cornering, the grip is definitely there even in rain (which surprised me). Mind you i used laytex tubes. but in conclusion, i have my specialized on backup wheelset, and will only buy continentals from now on. the price difference is not that big either.
Does it mapper in which direction they are fitted
Nice bike, and tyres.
Great video Oli, you managed whole 6 minutes without one of those awkward unfunny attempts at humour , you still managed an interesting and engaging video, keep it up.
What a bike!!
Superb bike. Ollie is a great presenter - good steal from CW.
Would love to know what the tubeless version is like. Then try to decide whether the extra cost over the Schwalbe Pro One is worth it
OMG!! That bike is so f...ing gorgeous!!! So both Ollie and Si got a brand new Trek Madone😜
Love those gp5000...I used scwalbe durano p 700x23..now whit conți gp 5000 700x28 is like a complet new bike..
Can you give some advice about teaming up tyres with rims - how do you measure the rim widths, how do you know which tyres sizes will be safe. Just for your info, I've just fitted some 105 brake (28mm compatible) callipers, but had too many stones caught between the very, very small clearance. Today it stopped me dead in my tracks. I have Continental 4000s ii which I gather run big for their nominal dimensions. Wiggle told me that Vittoria run closer to 28 - will they work better? Etc. etc.
That bike is amazeballs
cool but i just bought 6 of the 4000s2 on sale, so might try these in a few years
😂
though I'm not a fan of Trek bikes... this one looks great! Awesome color!
Just fitted these new from my bike, the feel very glossy and have more excess rubber in the middle of the tyre than any other i have ever used.
Should I do anything to break them in for riding?
They got me at tubeless, finally!
Sounds like an amazing tyre but I have to ask, are they easy to put on and take off the rims. Why I ask it’s because I have been told the gator skins are hard to put on and remove.
GCN is making me infatuated with road bike tires 😍😍😍😍
Bro that bike 😍
