I can't wait to see their takes on Os Alta and Ketterdam! Both cities are so iconic and so different, there's a LOT that revolves around these two cities so I hope that the show gives them both the scale they deserve and does them both justice.

This is probably the fairest/open minded reaction I've seen to the shadow and bone announcements! I've seen so many people angry over the blue kefta leak and it's so refreshing to finally see someone who understands that it's likely not going to have as much detail as the main character's outfit. I personally love the way Genya's outfit looks (plus I'm sooo looking forward to Daisy Head in the role, I think she's going to be amazing as Genya). There are a lot of casting and behind the scenes things that I'm nervous about but I really don't want to judge any of the actors or choices too hard before seeing the actual show, and after so many people trashing it before it even comes out, it's so nice to hear your opinion about it. There are shows people have been so excited about that end up being terrible and shows everyone thinks are going to be great than end up being terrible. While the costumes and physical appearances of actors are pretty big, and I respect people's opinions who aren't entirely on board with it so far, but performances and dialogue is also a huge part. If you don't like the costumes, you might still like the fight choreography. If you don't like the way someone looks in a role, you might still like their performance in the role. It's so sad to see people judging this show very harshly when it hasn't even been released yet. Their worries are valid and so are their opinions, but I think some people are taking it too far. (I've seen people on Twitter asking for it to be cancelled over the kefta leak??) Long story short, you guys just earned yourself a new subscriber! I really hope this show does well. I'll probably like the book more due to Leigh Bardugos's amazing writing, but I really hope to see Wylan and Nikolai on-screen in season 2. I actually liked Mal. I don't really know why and it was annoying he was ALWAYS there, so Alina never was alone to screw up (even when she ran away he quickly appeared to take Genya's place). Maybe cause while his and Alina's pairing was not OTP, it was the only one that seemed that could last (Alina's relationship with the Darkling was insanely interesting but also really really problematic and the Darkling was the villain so you knew he would be gone by the end while with Nikolai... idk, it never seemed they had any romantic chemistry? The only time Alina seemed to even consider it was when she was angry with Mal / being the usual self-sacrificing YA protagonist & the relationship seemed to be seen more as a good political move than actual pairing, I liked them as friends much more, more than any romantic pairing in the book actually). I think the twist with him being the amplifier was done more or less well, though I will say, HE SHOULD HAVE DIED. I like him, but it was war, he was stabbed, he should have died and stayed dead. Devastate our merry band of misfits & have Alina be alone for the first time since book 1.
I agree with you actually! I'm happy Alina got a peaceful ending to her story but I would've loved to see her gain independence from all these men who thought they had a say over her life and her place in the world. I like Mal in the way I like Peeta from the Hunger Games. I think he is the logical choice for Alina because he’s the only one who can be with her in the end after her powers are gone. He loves her for her. I’m not really loving the casting because I pictured someone who looked more like a soldier...? Idk 🤷♀️

Would absolutely love to see more in depth, critical analysis of both this series and other books (especially if it involves Imogen cause I know she's got some fab ideas, but then I'm biased hahaha)!

I really like them! Danielle isn't quite as curvy as I imagined Nina but she is definitely more representative of the average female body than most Netflix actresses. I'm looking forward to seeing her on screen. Sujaya is absolutely stunning and I'm excited to see her as Zoya. Zoya is one of my favourite characters! I like that they cast another Asian actress aside from Alina in this role. Hopefully this means they won't be bringing any prejudice issues into Alina's story. Personally, I love Mal. He may not be a dynamic character, but his loyalty and his wanting the best for her even if it tears him apart makes him more than just there for me. He also represents part of what keeps her sane.
wow, watching all these shadow & bone cast reactions is really showing me that my Malina appreciation is rare. I've read & reread the books & Mal n Alina have this lovely banter, safety with each other, and just a pure appreciation for who they each were before the story even started. This Mal hate makes me sad, he was literally so prepared to sacrifice everything for Alina & Ravka. But to ur point about him just "being there" I think one of the points of Mal is that he isn't as flashy and charismatic as Nikolai and he isn't as mysterious as the Darkling, he has aspects of all those guys and a special humility & need to prove himself. Mal represents the reader more than most of the other characters, maybe that's why people don't like him as much. Still, I think it's really poignant that after all the power Alina gains, the person she still loves and makes her feel special and seen and safe is the normal guy who she grew up with. ok thats my Mal rant :)
The costume colors are sometimes garish and overbright to color-correct the type of saturation or lens they're applying over the actual footage. Hopefully it'll look good in the actual show! Thanks for the video, lot of insight and can't wait for the show next year!!!!
As someone who did martial arts for quite some years I wouldn't wish to be wearing something like this - it hinders movement and just seams impractical for traveling & fighting
I loved Mal. Aside from the obvious dependability factor, he was brave and obviously loved Alina so much to be willing , as a good soldier to stand up against the most powerful people in their world , simply because Alina needed him. Also I felt like everyone else loved Alina for her power, what she can do for them and what she represents, Mal is the only one who truly loves her for her self, and he loves her even when she’s shitty to him. I hate the darkling, he reminds me of every abusive boyfriend I’ve had, charming narcissistic but fundamentally wants someone he can break into his perfect toy.
I love this! I totally agree that Mal and Alina's relationship should've been endgame for all these reasons. I just kind of wish we'd spent a bit more time developing Mal as an individual. I don't think we really get much of a sense of him except that he's a soldier and loves Alina.

I'm pretty new to the Grishaverse and am only on the second book, but so far I don't get why people hate Mal? Like... Yes I prefer The Darling and Nikolai, but I don't dislike Mal. I like all three. I might prefer Mal to Alina to be honest, I'm not sure. I tend to not really enjoy the protagonist most of the time, but I actually like Alina so yeah. The only character I can think of so far that I don't like, is Zoya, but from how the fandom talks about her, I'm guessing I'll like her later on.

I don't like Mals casting because I feel like the actor looks way too young compared to the rest of the cast. I pictured Mal being broader, taller and more mature looking. The actor gives off young teen vibes.

I don't like Mals casting because I feel like the actor looks way too young compared to the rest of the cast. I pictured Mal being broader, taller and more mature looking. The actor gives off young teen vibes.
You make a great point that I didn't think about!! He does feel like such an emotional anchor throughout. Mentally I just associate that with physical size ~Imogen

Nikolai is definitely my favourite! I can see why they wouldn't have worked though
