  • Here's a basic course on Grisha magic, how it works, and the orders of Grisha as presented in Shadow and Bone, and Six of Crows series by Leigh Bardugo, soon to be adapted by Netflix. This could be especially helpful if you decided to skip Shadow and Bone and start with Six of Crows, but it could be helpful if you want to remember the rules of the magic system before the tv show starts.

    I really appreciate how Grisha abilities are treated in-universe as a unique form of physical Science that has it limits and rules, rather than a "magical" cure-all for all conflict.
    .
    Its so easy to fall into the standard fantasy magic system of spells and rituals, and witchcraft, so this series was extremely refreshing. Especially how different cultures react to it.

    just some small details i wanna add :)
    -Durasts and Alkemists are usually just referred to as just Fabrikators
    -Corporalki can perform all the same tasks but to a lesser degree than someone who is more specialized for it (ex. a Heartrender can heal someone or change someones appearance but not as effective as an actual Healer or a Tailor would)
    -any Grisha can take jurda as a stimulant without any ill effects but jurda parem is the one that is dangerous and addictive and can lead to death if taken frequently

    • @cowrymoo9785
      @cowrymoo9785 3 года назад +6

      True. The division in the corporalki and frabikators are more on which training did you get growing up in the little palace. However, modern etherealkis are only able to summon on element.

    • @edsr164
      @edsr164 Год назад +2

      Except there’s one saint who was a durast that acted as healer and resurrected his younger daughter in ancient times. So it seems that the more powerful a grisha, the lessen the divisions. Specially if using merzost.

    it takes merzost (magic) to create matter so creatures like the volcra and the nichevo'ya arent just there bc the darkling was a shadow summoner, he alone couldnt create them just bc hes different from the others, he had to use merzost which is a different thing from the small science, when you use your power of the small science - when squallers summon wind, inferni summon fire and so forth - it empowers them but when they use merzost it takes its strength from them this is explained by baghra when she says something along the lines of 'your power feeds you, merzost feeds off of you' - just wanted to clear that up love the video

    If the grisha can control molecules and the summoners control the elements. Why not vibrate the methane and hydrogen molecules and atom to make fire. If theyr controlling molecules like avatar and fma then the are basically using electromagnetism . So they should be able to vibrate molecule or slow them down to freeze or combust them.

    • @dilaylad1903
      @dilaylad1903 3 года назад +1

      Squallers control air currents, not molecules. The molecular level is something that has more to do with Inferni and Tidemakers, when it comes to Etherealki, and with the Corporalki and Materialki :)

    • @camgeorge6222
      @camgeorge6222 3 года назад +1

      @@dilaylad1903 well air consist of gas molecules when heated the molecules move apart to higher areas creating a low pressure allowing cool air to flow in so. Thus creating currents moving gas particles from regions of high concentration to low. Which can be done by controlling molecules. So the entire girsha powers is basically molecular magic/science.

    This is a very helpful video. Its just the pronunciation is slightly off.
    There's a vid where the author, Leigh Bardugo, pronounces difficult words in the grishaverse. It's just fyi, if anyone needs it.

    • @Memodeth
      @Memodeth  3 года назад +1

      Yea, I don’t think she pronounces any of the orders in that video, but since this video I listened to the audiobook and they are pronounced with more of a Latin inspired pronunciation. I had assumed more Russian inspired when I had read the books. So the audiobook says Materi-AL-kai instead of Material-kee.

    I have just started reading the book and I’m confused about one thing; Alina asks one of her guards why he chose to be a heartrender instead of a healer, implying there is a choice among the different orders of Grisha? Is it so that you have an affinity for a certain category (say Corporalki) and from then on you only “study” in one direction or the other?

    • @dilaylad1903
      @dilaylad1903 3 года назад +6

      The Corporalki have an influence on the human body in general, but when they are children, they specialize in a certain area: Healer or Heartrender. Tailors are pretty unique (and downright seen as a laughable alternative, I can't say more or I'll spoil you, but you'll see that it's a particular situation). Etherealki cannot choose their specialty: they have an affinity with either fire, water or air. Materialki can also choose which one they want to be: Durast or Alkemi. To be honest, Materialki are the equivalent of Earth benders since they manipulate ore, wood or chemicals that are made from Nature.
      Hope this helped!

    Do you think it is a hard magic or soft magic? I got the sense that division between grisha became less difined the more powerful and or more ancient the grisha. We saw a durast act as a healer, we saw heartrenders act as tailors and healers, and we saw a squaller use Force Lightning, essentially.

    • @Memodeth
      @Memodeth  Год назад

      I’d say it’s a hard magic system since the powers are well defined, but who has which power gets a bit blurred as the series continues.

    wasn't another element of the corporalki order, that because they all focus on manipulating the body, instead of different types of matter. a corporalki can train to be any kind of subdivision or all three if they are dedicated enough and choose to do so. its very rare as its very difficult to hone all the skills to the same specialized degree, but it can be done. which I just think is very intersting
