Quick note: Eileen does, in fact, remember the Hunter's dream. If you make an enemy of her before the Grand Cathedral, when she kills you she has a line that says "Do you still dream? Tell the little Doll I said hello."
I don't know why people say that you lose memory of the Hunter's Dream after you're beheaded and wake up. Gehrman says you'll forget the dream, but how could he know? He's always been stuck in the Dream. People who have woken up, like Djura and Eileen still remember. Plus, if the Hunter's Dream is like any other dream, it might be difficult to remember it after you wake up, but it's not impossible, and the more trauma and time you spend in the dream, the more likely you are to remember at least some major pieces of it.
@@Ashlevon my theory and opinion. I think Djura and Eileen were kicked out of the Hunters dream for not fulfilling thier mission. Like they just said fuck it and stopped thier quest. There are so many headstones in the hunters dreams obviously other hunters have come trhough here and when they complete their tasks whatever that maybe. Each new hunter probably having a diffrent task they are beheaded and set free by Gerhman and memories forgotten. But Elieen and Drujan still remember but no longer dream because when they die they die forever. So I think they were kicked out of the hunters dream for going against thier contract. Maybe Djran protecting beast and Elieen hunting other hunters was reason to kick them out and null thier contracts.
This game is the one that got me into the soulsborne series. The weapons that can change into one form or another, the pure chaos of trying to be faster than the enemy rather than using a shield, and the jaw dropping atmosphere was so fun.
The weapons and setting sold me immediately but I couldn't play for years until someone close to me died. This game helped me process all of those feelings and got me into FromSoft lore. I like Elden Ring too but the Bloodborne feels more raw and stripped down.
Probably just you, Bloodborne has and still is talked about to this day. Elden Ring only helped reignite the already large interest in the soulsborne games.
@@freshlymemed5680 Agreed! I see people talk about it every year in the best of ways, like how it influenced them or inspired them and so on. Classics are spoken of often!
As the others have said, people have always talked about Bloodborne. You can find video essays being made every year since the launch of the game. On the trophies subreddit, you might probably see at least one person platting Bloodborne every week. The bloodborne subreddit itself is always teeming with activity, as much as Dark Souls 3 if I’m not wrong. Can’t wait to see new Soulsborne fans get into BB after trying out Elden Ring as their first FromSoft game!
In a way, I think Bloodborne’s unanswered (or even unanswerable) questions help to elevate it as a game about cosmic horror. We have to contend with the fact that there are aspects at play within Bloodborne’s world that entirely defy explanation or even human comprehension.
this is actually a really great solution, its like the 2d object cant comprehend 3d object and 3d object cant comprehend 4d object. just like the game, we cant comprehend the dimension power of bloodborne.
I think the biggest point in favor of that is when you discover that the inside of the hunters dream is actually at the bottom of the “Great Sea/Lake” it’s especially noticeable when you first step out of the clock tower and look to your left and right above you. Also the snail that falls from the sky otw to where the whirligig saw is further implies being below the sea/lake since those snails chill at the bottom of the sea/lake and fell from ABOVE beside the hunter. I think that really goes to show you how little we know and can comprehend about these nightmares and eldritch horrors.
I agree, it is one thing to be cosmic horror which Lovecraft came up with it is another thing for the cosmic horror itself or anything else to be Lovecraftian.
What I love about Bloodborne is that even though lore-wise the world is filled with monsters and abominations roaming the streets, you play as the scariest thing out there. The Hunter.
My passion is dying. They gave me Sekiro and I hated it, now we have Elden RIng and to my surprise I find it a phucking bore. From Soft ... what are you doing? Will you ever be able to please me again, or is our love story over?
@@50-50_Grind if you hated both sekiro and Elden ring, which are both amazing games that continue the line of souls games, then are you truly a fromsoft fan?
Trick weapons are one of the coolest things FromSoft ever spawned. And they're all viable transformations, too. Not just magically changing weapons but there's actually a level of mechanical stuff involved. Hell, Man at Arms even made a Saw Cleaver.
@@cryofreezie3943 Too bad by the time you beat Malenia there's like nothing to actually use it on. I wish ER let you keep your great runes on ng+. Malenia's is basically useless
There are so many lore videos about Bloodborne but honestly this video is the one that pieced together some of the more convoluted pieces of the story for me. Excellent job!
I find it very cool that the Great Ones might be as alien to each other, as they are humanity. With that in mind, I was under the impression that whilst it's motivations were unclear, the Moon Presence's purpose was reasonably obvious; it wanted to kill Mergo (and perhaps other Great Ones). That's why it's happy to release the Hunter after Mergo is dead. Presumably whatever taks it had for Djura and Eileen, they also completed. It keeps Gehrman to maintain the Dream and keep luring in pawns for its schemes. I also thought that Mergo was Oedon's child which it, like all Great Ones, has been trying to conceive.
That's interesting because we never actually see Mergo. Oedon is the "formless Great One" so I wonder if keeping Mergo as a formless entity was deliberate.
My personal understanding of the Wet Nurse fight is that Mergo's crying is being used to beckon the Great Ones, and the Wet Nurse's job is to keep Mergo crying. Meaning that when you kill the Nurse, Mergo's nightmare is over and the poor child can dream peacefully.
Its an interesting theory, I'll be honest. The only reason i have to not agree with it is that Bloodborne uses the idea of the inverted Hero's Journey, meaning that as you progress shit should get worse for the Hunter. He should not be saving children but killing them (yeah that level of bad)
@@nakfyre9512 Actually, they wanted to do that, there are even contents from early alphas regarding that. But for obvious reasons, these types of stuffs u knw, is not really suitable to be put on a game that anyone will play...
@khorjingyan3438 could you share your source on that? Tried looking up cut content but couldn't find anything regarding that level of stuff and am curious to hear the thought process
@@Leader237 Firstly, this is not a one off thing. In DS3 Oceiros was supposed to be carrying his infant in his hand and accidentally killing him. Instead, he carried nothing and when entering phase 2 we hear a baby crying in the background. Secondly, the video that gave me this insight is of a chinese video unfortunately I can still link you if you want.
Got into Bloodborne August last year during a lockdown. My God did I fall down the rabbithole. 9 characters, 500 hours, and platinum. Safe to say, I love this game. It's incredible. The story, the combat, the world design, the characters. It's all great and sticks in your mind. Even though I've only played it for a comparatively short period of time (not in terms of time spent playing but over how many months/years), I can happily say it is in my top 3 games of all time alongside Half Life 2 and Fallout:New Vegas. It certainly has its flaws, but Bloodborne is a timeless masterpiece. I'd be very keen to see a sequel, but only if From Software is driven to do so, and can really create something extraordinary again.
Beautifully said! It's like an amazing book, the pacing is perfect, the reveals are subtle but monumental. It just GRIPS your interest and attention so completely.
Unfortunately Bloodborne may not have a sequel like dark souls, but you have to understand the reason why dark souls 3 existed was because people were unhappy of the way dark souls 2 was retconning the first souls game
I started DS1 about a year ago and hated it, i came back about 2 months ago and just finished it and absolutely loved it. I did the same thing with Bloodborne except i haven't been back yet, i think i will have to play it next.
“It only took four hours to beat.” Me thinking about the orphan of Kos and Lawerence. And the stress dreams I had about them trying to learn how to kill them solo for the first time.
Some people do just play on easy mode, by leveling up as high as possible and also summoning help, and that's fine, not everyone has the time. People who just want to play the game and don't care about pvp or continuous Co-op. Had a friend complain the game was too easy, I see their profile and they're bloodlevel 400 on the first play through because they just grinded levels
I agree that Bloodborne is one of the greatest story’s never told. Over the years I’ve inched closer to understanding and putting the puzzle together. I highly recommend a video series by Charred Thermos, An Agony of Effort. I looks at bb thru a Victorian Era Medical viewpoint and is truly insightful. Praise!
@@alexharrison2743its bloated and redundant at times, definitely needed editing, but if youre interested in an essay-like breakdown of the historical and literary references that clearly, directly inspired bloodborne, then definitely go for it, its incomplete as the creator was not satisfied with the quality or reception of it, but it does go into almost excruciating detail breaking down the overarching allegory that bloodborne represents, which is the nightmarish practice and research of western medicine circa 17th-18th century victorian era. Its not "cinematic" or "story driven" but it is good information and is clearly the correct interpretation. Its very well researched and informative, as the subject matter isnt really widely taught in detail to most people.
I think the reason why Yharnam seems so much more peaceful after Gehrman kills you is because the night of the hunt is finally over. I'm probably completely wrong but I was always under the impression that the city was just stuck in the night for the rest of time until the player character completes the main story.
The theories I heard surrounding that ending were leaning in two directions: The hunt is cyclical and will simply repeat. Or, the hunt is quite literally neverending. In neither case would the hunt truly be over, simply because you let Gehrman kill you. All that does, is free YOU from the hunter's dream, but another hunter is likely to already be your replacement, while you are either stranded to become an NPC in Yharnam or you leave somehow. That's why it's the worst ending in many people's eyes, because you essentially chose to wuss out of all the consequences, despite all the knowledge you have, thrust this terrible curse onto yet another hunter and all the original issues are still right there. You just chose to close your eyes to them.
@@dowfreak7 I wondered when I got this ending if the player had chosen to preserve the little humanity/sanity he has left, willingly dying to end the nightmare and wake up questioning if it was real or like some dialogue says, finding it hard to remember what you dreamt about
@@dowfreak7 that's indeed the worst ending, but the truth is neither of the three endings is actually good. the one that I would consider somewhat good is the one where we become a great one. simply because we now have a power to at least try and do something "positive"
I think I agree. The night is when the beasts come out, possibly due to the veil between dimensions growing weaker at night, and during the day, Yharnam is mostly peaceful. The place is still filled with people, but it’s now deteriorated to mostly ruins
29:29 Interesting detail about the Awakening Headstones in the Hunter's Dream; whenever you select any of them, the top of the list always includes the text "Awaken Above Ground," implying that the Hunter's Dream is actually the lowest point of all the realms. Also, in the Nightmare Frontier, you can see the masts from Fishing Hamlet below and the Nightmare of Mensis above, so those three are stacked on top of each other, with the Hunter's Nightmare being below the Fishing Hamlet due to the Snail Woman dropping there from the "sky."
@@papaguacamole776 they are, yet I like the idea of the hunters dream being the deepest level of existence, kinda the core where it all is stacked ontop of, even chalice dungeons being above it. This makes sense (imo) even with the ending (spoilers), because the moon presence does reside there by the end of the game, and judging from how there appears to be a vast endless void of pillars outside of the hunters dream it could be that this places exists outside of all other physical spaces simply for all of the hunters
It would make sense for the Hunter’s Dream to be the lowest point since you can see the trees like the ones in Ash Lake in Dark Souls 3. It’s the lowest area in DS3, and I think a reference to Yggdrasil’s (tree that holds the Nine Realms in Norse Mythology) roots. Could be wrong tho, idk
The Nightmares/dreams are literally pocket dimensions created by the Great Ones for specific reasons. For example, the Hunter's Dream was created by the Moon Presence to trap Gehrman and use him to influence hunters in the real world, Kos created the Hunter's Nightmare to torment the hunters, etc... They create those dimensions because they can't physically interact with our reality (Ebrietas is not considered full on Great One, like Rom she is similar to "Kin"). Yharnam is indeed our world, the "Waking world" that the Doll refers is implying that we will no longer "Dream". Because the great ones ascended so much, they can only truly exist in their respective dimensions. Edit: to clarify, in my interpretation, not every Great One ascended to the same level. You have the big boys like Oedon, Kos and the Moon Presence, and you have the "lesser ones" like the Brain of Mensis and the Amygdalas. Some of them clearly cannot exist in our reality. Oedon ascended so much that he became formless, and the Moon Presence had to use Gehrman and the Hunter to do his biddings.
Adding just a little bit on to this as the great ones ascend, they can no longer exist in our world and must exist in their own, being the nightmares. The nightmares being stacked means you can take their ascension quite literally as they exist above out world. Rom can also fit into this. If her greatest aspiration, like the rest of the school, was to ascend, what better punishment than having her exist in a layer even below the waking world.
Bloodborne's story seems to take a lot of inspiration from Lovecraft obviously, but specifically from the story "From Beyond". In From Beyond, a scientist discovers how to transcend human senses and discovers that the universe is way bigger than we know and that all around us, creatures live that are wholly different to our world and experiences. We normally can't interact with them, and they can't interact with us. This seems very similar to the whole nightmare / dream realm and the great ones. I think this is the best explanation for the story.
There 4 parts with Souls in it. Also the simple reason is that when Bloodborne came out people had 3 games with Souls in the name that were similar. So fans came up with Soulsborne. Which is also why people make fun of it nowadays by making the name longer and longer with each new game that Fromsoft releases
I love elden ring alot however this game is always high on the bar, combat, story, design, the gem system, dungeons (I know I'm insane) this game just hits all the notes I love and the art and time period oh my god! This game is pure masterpiece status
@@bog7227 yes! Coming from bloodborne to elden ring the sound track was a huge dissapointment for me. Every song in bloodborne is a banger- especially the hunters dream music 🙌
There are some bangers in elden ring, the ancestor spirit, mohg lord of blood and the godskin duo. While yes bloodborne has the clear edge in music I say wait for the dlc because that's where from soft makes the true masterpieces
Here's my theory on the Moon Presence, the Hunter's Dream and Mensis; - The Moon presence is the cause of the beast scourge, the moon presence is very beastly in appearance whereas other great ones are kin like. Its chest is open too, leaving blood behind which is why people were able to find old blood, since this is the blood they were using to administer, they have the beastly blood within them. (Whereas Ebrietas blood used in the research hall turns people into celestials. And the people around the Fishing Hamlet have become fish people as they lived off Kos' body.) - Now I believe Micolash wrote the four notes in the Lecture Hall as it is part of the Mensis Nightmare. These are; "Master Willem was right. Evolution without courage will be the ruin of our race." "Hunt the Great Ones, Hunt the Great Ones." "The nameless moon presence beckoned by Laurence and his associates. Paleblood." "Three third cords." - So Micolash learnt you must consume three third cords to transcend, Mensis currently have 1 from Queen Yarnham - To find more cords they will have to hunt great ones to have them create children. - They found out about the moon presence so would use a special child, Mergo to lure the Moon Presence closer as it would then create its own children "When the red moon hangs low, the line between man and beast is blurred. And when the Great Ones descend, a womb will be blessed with child." The moon presence will later on have a child with Arianne and imposter Iosefka after Rom is killed. - To use Mergo they would have to commune with it by creating the Mensis Nightmare, allowing them to bring the Moon presence down. This is evolution using courage as he sees it, willing give anything include your own life. Unlike the Healing Churches ways which will bring ruin to their race. -When the moon descended the Moon Prescence's effect on everything with its blood inside them grew and they began transforming into beasts. - Rom puts a lock on the ritual but the beast scourge has already been activated. - A while later after the hunters have been established, they raid the Fishing Hamlet and get cursed with the Hunter's Nightmare. - Maria then has a celestial child as the cord from the workshop is said to have come from the child of the vilebloods. - Laurence and his associates use this cord to commune with the moon presence to create the Hunter's Dream as a counter to the Hunter's Nightmare, so hunters can come there to die instead of being sent to the nightmare, which is why there are lots of gravestones. But then they also start making contracts with hunters to lock them into the dream until they can find a way to stop the beast scourge. "To escape this dreadful Hunter's Dream, halt the source of the spreading scourge of beasts, lest the night carry on forever." - Gehrman's job is to stay on watch over the dream, whereas Laurence's job was to go to the Nightmare to find a way to stop it, however he became a beast. Gehrman is still waiting for the Nightmare to end before he can end the Hunter's Dream. - The player character however ended up being the one to end the Nightmare and consume 3 cords to transcend, if that's the ending you chose.
What always boggled me all these years of lore hunting and creteing speculation and such was WHO went down to Pthemero dungs and stuck that first syringe to collect blood samples. Why did we do this without even knowing or having the insight to even understand and comprehend that there is such beings called Great Ones. Was Beyrgenworth even a school of education before becoming an out of plain sight research clinic? What exactly happened between the first meeting of Pthemero civilization when Laurence and the gang decided to venture the dungeons. In the game, or seriously at this point, in this story... This game just like how this video is split into The Hunt, The Nightmares (or the layers if you want to think of them like that), and the DLC (or in my personal case, i call this the Climax) are almost perfect plots for picture perfect stories or movies that id love to watch and dissect into personal astonishment. Did the moon pres always exist in world of yharm in the first place since they all fully rose from the grounds of the unknown dungeons, prior of Laurence and the gang digging into the depths? What was the first beckoning of these beings.. This game begs for a major introduction to how this all really started. Still so many questions.. one day i only hope to ascend to full and pure understand of this. Always and forever, we all grow "tired of these piteous nights" of unanswered questions.
An interest thing to note, Miyazaki said in an interview that Rom was his favorite boss, and that her movements were almost "infantile." Rom is a child, and a young one at that. Not only that, it looks almost cocoon-like. Going back to the part where we see at least 3 different Roms, perhaps that's some kind of stepping stone for the Great Ones. Like they go through a metamorphosis before becoming their true form. Just a thought/theory I had.

Redgrave, the father of Bloodborne lore, made an EXCELLENT short book on the complete story and lore of this game called "Paleblood Hunt". You should also watch his lore videos. In regards to translations, it's actually super funny. A lot of Japanese players ALSO look to western translations for extra lore just as we do looking at Japanese text. So in regards to translations, things can get messy and probably should be taken with a huge grain of salt.
Playing and platinum-ing this game was a solid 6 months of my life. I've watched a bunch of Vati videos multiple times and yet still learned something here today. If you’re still looking for “””new””” content I recommend “The Paleblood Hunt” by Redgrave. Redgrave made a lot of YT videos on more esoteric lore for Bloodborne and his magnum opus is both his plain text and now an amazing narrated audiobook by Jay Britton. It’s honestly one of the most comprehensive looks at Bloodborne still to this day, would recommend
I've been invested in the story and rich lore of bloodborne since day one, and I must say that this video is probably the best single summary of the whole thing. Congratulations, you did a really great job!
Even after beating Elden Ring numerous times and enjoying myself with different builds, Bloodborne is still my fav. Dark Souls 1 would be an equal or slightly below
In terms of gameplay I would say Bloodborne, ds3, elden, ds2, ds1. In terms of atmosphere and story I think ds1, Bloodborne, elden, ds3, ds2 ( I haven't played sekiro)
Bloodborne is my very first Soulsborne game. I only ever played it for 2 reason. 1.) as a warmup for Eldin Ring so I didn’t suck and 2.) because it was free. The game was so damn good that I deleted Eldin Ring for 3 more days because I couldn’t resist going through for another Bloodborne play through. It’ll go down as forever one of the best games I’ve ever experienced
I had a rough idea of all the story between my playthrougs, reading youtube comments and reading forums posts but your video truly truly makes it all fit together, great man just great
Another cool detail could be how, adding to how it talks about the idea that the beast plague makes its way up the left leg, whenever you extract blood to make bullets, you specifically stab the left leg, and when you heal, it’s specifically the right.
Being an old gamer I've played through many gens and I have many games I like a lot. My favourites tend to be old games like Mario, Tenchu 2, Sonic and knuckles, Shenmue, Metal Gear Solid or the God of War games. Never would I had thought that Bloodborne would suck the life out of me like it did. It's really perfect for me
Same here. I started with Mario/duck hunt and donkey kong classics. It takes a lot to impress me after having played so many great games over the years. Bloodborne just took over once it clicked for me.
“We see our first enemy here and die” I fist fought that thing to death and struggled for about 20 mins trying to kill the mob after it before getting my butt kicked and figuring out I was supposed to die
Bloodborne is my favorite game of all time. The lore, the atmosphere, the NPC’s, the combat, the trick weapons, the bosses, the music and so much more it’s just so fascinating. Truly a unique masterpiece.

Is there any other game that had a more visually creative boss than Ludwig? Doubt it. You're free to your opinion though. Even if it's an objectively incorrect one.
Tbh I've been replaying Elden Ring after about a year and every time I see bloodborne I get interested, so when this popped in my feed I clicked instantly but just the little description at the beginning made me realize I wanna play through it. Thanks man.
Oedon was by far the most accurate Great One when compared to H.P Lovecraft and yet there was so much mystery and lack of further detail into his motives. He's formless and only present in voice, yet he controls and retains authority where the yharnamites don't even realize or can begin to realize him. This was a big touching point for Lovecraft. We as mere mortals cannot see or imagine or even begin to comprehend or communicate with a great one, because we'd go insane at the mere thought of them existing.
@wassupjg under all the lore so far, oedon and the Moon Presence are two separate entities!! Oedon is formeless either in mind or physical manifestation, while the Moon Presence takes presence in the Hunters dream, once the conditions are met.
@@wassupjgthe other confirmed great ones are designed based upon anatomical depictions of human organs. The moon presence is the heart/circulatory system, ebrietas is a trachea... the amygdalas heads are shaped like the amygdala in our bodies... bloodborne is a metaphor or allegory for victorian era medical practice/research. Oedeon could represent our inner thoughts/monologue or our spirit, something within ourselves but has no physical organ, or possibly it could represent a mental disorder. Paleblood is almost certainly a reference to tuberculosis, and the healing bloods description is almost exactly the same as ether... one of the first anaesthetics and was widely distributed as a cure all despite its highly addictive qualities as well as widely used to assist in medical surgery.
I followed BB the moment it dropped in 2015. The gothic feel and the Lovecraftian atmosphere of the game enthralled me, and I'll always hold it in high regard because of how well its story had been executed. Thank you for this video, Gingy.
The fishing hamlet being visible from the nightmare fronteir further proves the layer theory. Also its enterily possible that the rom that is in the cathedral is simply someone else who accended as there bodies are entirely different.
My theory is that the moon presence traps german to train and send hunters to fight monsters and keep the hunt going forever because he uses the blood echoes as a source of power. I derived this idea from the fact that the runes that give you more bloodechoes are the "moon" runes as if the moon presence is syphoning off some of the blood echoes you get every time you kill a beast. And through the power of these runes you are able to overpower it in a sense and collect more of the echoes for yourself.
I believe the Moon Presences motivation was to kill Mergo, as Mergo would one day be strong enough to rival the Moon Presence. When that’s done the Dream is no longer needed and the Hunter is offered to leave. When the Hunter refuses they become a replacement for Gherman for the next Hunter that is needed to slay perhaps a future infant great one. But if you consume all three cords you rival the Moon Presence and overtake it, ironically doing the very thing you were supposed to prevent Mergo from doing.
This makes sense imo. Otherwise why would the moon presence hug the hunter after the hunter kills the person who he pretty much imprisoned (Gerhman) and forced to guide other hunters to hunt the source of the nightmare? Also another yt video mentioned something about Gehrman that I believe to be true too in regards that he cries out for help to Master Willem and Laurence because he doesn't actually know that they are no longer in a healthy state, or in Laurence's case alive, to try to rescue him from the dream because he's been imprisoned for so long without any knowledge of what's happened to Laurence and Willem outside of the hunter's dream since their mission started some time around the discovery of the Pthumerian's knowledge of the great ones. His story, much like every npc's story in the game, is especially grim but when you hear him cry out to Laurence & Willem in the game it's heartbreaking & chilling at the same time.
There's nothing in game that would state Flora wanted Mergo dead.. if that was the case, the Hunt would end forever. No need to retain Gehrman! But he remains trapped, and we get kicked out, seemingly like other Hunters before us. Saying the dream is "no longer needed" is objectively wrong. WE are no longer needed.. perhaps until another Great One is found, and it need be killed. Because the Moon Presence somehow wants to be the only one left alive... IF Great Ones can even be killed by human hands, which would be hilarious. Considering Great Ones might not be attached to the physical form we see them in, instead of being a projection in our three dimensional reality.
This doesn't adds up at all. Mergo is just a conciousnes of the dead child of Queen Yhranam, who has been dead for a long time by the game takes place. With the DLC they hammer home the fact that as you "kill" the orphan, you are liberating it's spirit/conciousnes from the nightmare. The same happens with mergo, thats why Yhranam bows to you after you killed the wetnurse. Also the gravestones are anything to go by, then a couple of hundreds hunters have already gone throught the hunters dream and somehow I doubt every one of them have killed a great one's child, because the moonpresence for some reason feels threathened for some reason, even though we have zero indicaton or information to think that the great ones are bothered by echother. Also Gherman doesn't push us towards killing great ones, only to kill beasts on that night.
@@dantoki6371 It does make sense when you (out of pretty much nowhere, sure, but I love this idea) believe that the Great Ones are just using you as tools in their wars. Great One birth rates are supposed to be very low, and you kill one or two of them in the waking world, plus Mergo´s consciousness, plus The One Reborn, who might or might not be one, but I tend to believe so. The Great Ones seem pretty involved in Yarnham´s history, and it might well be a breeding ground for them, since, again, two women can get pregnant from the Great Ones, Iosefka and Arianna, and Annalise´s "blood dregs" look like sperm. Arianna is tremendously traumatized by this event, and Queen Yarnham might simply be linked to her child even after death, and transported to Mergo´s place outside of the Waking World. The Moon Presence has reason to kill as many infant Great Ones as possible, both within the Dreams and the Waking World, since they might be children of its enemies, possible future rivals, or yet another pawn in the God´s cosmic game. The fact that you aren´t actively pursuing the murder of the infant Great Ones is no indication that it isn´t the Presence´s true objective all along, and the other hunters don´t necessarily have to kill one themselves, just act in its unknowable interest, be it facilitating your own journey to Mergo and Kos, or simply perpetuating the shit going down in Yarnham.
@@Astraben Well the pthumerian dungeouns are underneath Yharnam, wich is said to be the tomb of the gods, so for them to have involvement in the city, is not surprising. The problem with the idea of the whole Great Ones' cosmic powerstrugles, or fear of dead great ones children is that, there is absolutely zero evidence for that. Again, Mergo is dead and wont grow more powerful. He has been dead for long enough to a civilzation to fall and an other one to emerge and he is still a crying baby. Even killing mergo is a mercy killing, you essentially free an infant conciousnes from a nightmare. At the end of the wet nurse fight we can hear that he calms down and then, Queen Yharnam even thanks us for the act. Same with the orphan, at the end we free it from the nightmare and it is framed as a positive thing. In Yhranam, Amygdalas littering the place without doing much, while oedon is there trying to make babies, Ebrietas chills with the choir. They clearly not interested in eachoter. The main thing the Great Ones characterised by is that they want children and not by warring with eachoter and dead babies, "unknowable interests" or anything else. The Moon presence was once beconed by Laurence as a note states. In the dream Gherman talks about Laurence and asking "what taking you so long". There was clearly a pact between Laurence and the moon presence and Gherman was apparently a part of that deal, and if it would be "killing" mergo then Gherman would be free along with us, but he aint. Most likely she wants a surrogate child and Gherman acts as such, while waiting for Laurence (wich is an other rabbit hole in itself).
40:20 careful, the "waking world" the doll is referring to does not necessarily differ from the Yharnam we physically explore throughout the rest of the game. The reason it seems more peaceful is in fact because the paleblood hunt is over, and the looming blood moon isn't an imminent threat anymore. Story is bound to repeat itself sooner or later, and eventually other great ones will alert the blood moon which will in turn inadvertently turn more healing blood-frenzied humans into beasts. This is why Eileen and Djura still remember about the hunter's dream: they partook in previous hunts for other great ones and solved them just like your hunter did, and then they accepted to get beheaded and sent back to the "waking world" of Yharnam, along with every other hunter whose headstone is found in Gehrman's garden. The hunter's dream itself, along with Gehrman and the doll, is none other than a mere device for the moon presence (also known as "Flora", interestingly enough) to keep Yharnam under her control, safe from the hands of other great ones, by granting random passer byes such as the aforementioned characters material invincibility in the waking world. This is why you sign a contract to begin with: the messengers (Flora's minions) temporarily unshackle your consciousness from the waking world and tie it to the hunter's-dream-plane-of-existence, thus allowing you to die at your heart's content in other planes but keeping you mortal (aka under Flora's control) in a controlled environment/"interface hub", at least until Flora's contract (aka "solve the current hunt", aka "get rid of this one pesky fellow great one so that I may not accidentally ruin humanity") is fulfilled. Actually dying in the hunter's dream outside of the ending cutscene (such as chikage seppuku, or dying against the 2 final bosses) obviously doesn't cause the game to end because of gameplay and convenience reasons, but that's essentially how it should work. This also explains Gehrman's role as a "slave" for the moon presence: him and Laurence used their third of an umbilical cord upon realizing the healing church had rendered Yharnam doomed, in a wishful, last-minute attempt to summon the moon presence to cleanse the world from trouble, and they succeded to a degree, but Flora actually took the chance to turn the situation in her favor to accomplish whatever she set out to do (aka dominate in potential rivalries with other great ones). She did end up "saving" the lonely, disabled and jobless Gehrman from his own personal hell, even shaping the hub dimension to look like a restored version of his dear workshop and giving the doll he "loved" apparent life, but she also turned him into his secretary/puppet to lead newcomers on the upcoming hunts. All of this eventually got on the poor old man's nerves, which is the reason why he desperately mutters for Laurence to come rescue him in his sleep
To explain the reason of the two live Roms and the Rom corpse, there was a theory that a great one's conciousness was seperate from its corporeal form. Where the Moon Presence final boss is said to be it's consciousness while its real body was the one cut boss in the chalice dungeon. Basically, great ones are stand users.
one of the coolest theories is that the pillars could be parallel realities of other hunters stuck in their own dreams. great video I like your take on the story. i've been a long time souls fan so it's hard for me to say which souls game is best, but bloodborne is probably my favorite.
Typically the vids I watch on RUclips average about 5-8 minutes run time. I’ve always avoided anything that’s 15 minutes+ long but Gingy’s content usually gets my full, undivided attention. Keep up the good work brother
I always liked to think that Germhan was tricked unintentionally into his roll in the hunters dream. It's so tragic to think he was stuck there because both of his friends said they'd come back for him once they understand how to communicate with the old ones but they both failed in their own ways. Gerhman doesn't even know they are gone and possibly doesn't even know they split ways. Or branching from that idea maybe that's why Laurence even split from Willem, to try and find a route to save his friend from the dream which makes Laurence's story even more tragic. Man this game is still amazing after 10 years. Crazy.
08:48 similarly to this, Gehrman is missing his right leg, possibly so that the beasthood infection wouldn't spread further? It would partially explain how he kept his sanity so much longer than anyone else
In one of the outfits, there is a belt around the leg, implying it is a tourniquet to stop the old blood from spreading. So I think you’re right on the nose with this.
It is weird: another outfit says that 'the idea that the scourge of beasts is infectious is pure heresay'. But then, why does Gherman have a missing leg? And it's exactly the leg people think that beast blood creeps up.
@@onii-chandaisuki5710 i believe Vaati clarified that the people were superstitious,so they believed that in the older times but then educated themselves

I have mixed feelings about Miyazaki not tackling the BB style and Setting again. On one hand I'd pay all the money for a sequel or spin off, on the other it stands as a singular masterpiece. I've played all the From games and it's still my uncontested favorite. But for God's sake give us a PS5 remaster or a PC Port. This game deserves to be 60fps and in 4k. I'd pay $60 just for that

I find it funny that not understanding how the realms work fits into the eldritch theme. Reminds me of an explanation of madness I saw once where someone said that if you glimpsed something you couldn't understand and then spent time trying figure it out, to someone with no context you look mad.

Goes to show that you, as much as I, have really delved deep into it and how much you also love it. I really appreciate it! You did a great job at summarizing this "mess" of art. I'm both saddened that we will never get the full picture.. but it's so on theme, that I can't be mad about it.
elden ring’s quality takes a gigantic dip in quality towards the end imo. bloodborne is mostly solid all the way through, though edit: just noticed i wrote “quality takes a dip in quality” but i ain’t changing it lmao
The only thing Elden Ring has over Bloodborne imo is the conveniences needed to make an open world Souls game (teleporting anywhere if your outside, no lengthy runbacks for bosses). I haven't played any souls game since Elden Ring came out, but I think it will be difficult to go back to the older games and not having those conveniences.
This is a GREAT video! Although I have an issue with something... specifically 42:05 "Moon Presence is the host of the dream" The hosts are supposed to be people. For instance, Micolash is the host of the Mensis nightmare, under Mergo. In a similar fashion, the Hunter's Dream (our hub) and the Hunter's Nightmare (DLC) are both hosted by the same person: *Gehrman* The Hunter's Dream is not a real place, it's a dream-like plane reminiscent of the workshop, where the tombstones are not real burial places aside for one. The one that is also at the workshop: Lady Maria's grave. This is where we find the bone "from an apprentice of Gehrman's" that allows us to dodge better, an ability Maria has. This is also where we find the hair thingy, probably something Gehrman kept as souvenir. This is also where we find the doll, something Gehrman crafted as a proxy for Maria, whom he loved. Finally, this is where we find the umbilical cord. I believe Gehrman couldn't live with the loss of Maria, and used the cord to communicate with a Great One (in this case Moon Presence) to create the dream, where he now lives. But it didn't turn out how he wanted. He is frail and passive, forced to host the hunters, still without Maria. Clearly he rejected the doll for not being Maria, so he tells us we can use her however we want. He's stuck there, bitter, while everyone else is in his nightmare. The Hunter's Nightmare is most likely the result of a personal curse Kos put on Gehrman, who seemingly defiled her, her son, and the fishing village at the orders of the Church (as they wanted to gain knowledge). This is where all the hunters end up after succombing to bloodlust, due to the curse in the blood intoxicating them. We can notice that ALL the old hunters are in the nightmare (in the real world they all turned into beasts and/or died) aside from Gehrman, who hosts this nightmare from within the dream. This is why the doll tells us Gehrman can finally sleep well after defeating the Orphan; the nightmare was slain, so even though the blood is still cursed, at least hunters are free from hunting perpetually in Gehrman's nightmare. The interesting thing about Bloodborne is that evidently, dying either sends you to the dream or a nightmare, depending if you've been corrupted by the blood or not. The intro cutscene after the contract seems to show this: beasthood is coming for you, but if you're still safe, the messengers can allow you to go to the dream instead when you die. --- One last thing: the Living Failures are not meant to be emissaries, but great ones themselves. This video seemed unsure about it, but there's a description somewhere that confirms this.
I remember the lead up to the game, project beast was all we could gleam from rumor, the anticipation, then the trailer reveal, the souls fan were thrilled, victorian gothic with werewolf and beast, the theories of vampires, greater vampires, perhaps even chimera or great beast hydra were born from the single trailer, little do we know we have witnessed one of the single greatest plot twist and utilization of lovecrarftian horror in the gaming history
I have a different view of the true ending and the dream realms. In my personal interpretation, the dream realms are "spiritual" realms like an afterlife of sorts, and by defeating Gherman in the dream you are setting him free so he can return to the real world and truly die, you fight him as an act of kindness to give him peace. By fighting the Moon Presence you are sacrificing your humanity by consuming the umbilical cords in order to destroy Flora's tyranny over the human afterlife and becoming it's new protector, granting peace in death to all humanity at the cost of your own. By that point in the game you have revealed the Great Ones to the world by destroying Rom, and you took many of them down with your own human hands so now mankind has a chance to fight back thanks to the hunter, and once their lives are done no man will have to be stuck in the purgatory of the dream or the hell of the nightmares since the hunter is now watching over them, a human turned god.
My theory for ROM’s ‘vacuous’ state is for holding space to prevent the red moon from dropping. She’s vacuous to hold that plane of existence, which is also vacuous, preventing what happens after we as hunter kill her, and show immediate remorse (dropping to our knees in sorrow) when we realize what we just did.
Vacuous means lacking in intelligence So I think the point was that because she wasn’t very intelligent there was no danger in her gaining knowledge of the eldritch truth and she would simply follow the instructions given to her prior to her transformation even after learning the truth, but as with anything, it’s all speculation!
Dang dude good job!! 👍 I re started Bloodborne for the first time in years. When I first started about 4 years ago I looked up pretty much every lore video I could find and this way is by far the best!!
@Darth Maul Vaati is GREAT! But haven't seen a video of him explaining Bloodborne in its entirety as well as this. Vaati does probably the best dark souls lore videos, but for Bloodborne this is the best one if we're talking about the whole story as smoothly, accurate, and straightforward as possible.
“The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.” - H.P. Lovecraft. I mean.... tell me that isnt BloodBorne in a nutshell right there.
me who spent over 800 hours in bb and almost equaly as much in diving into the lore of bb. sees a bloodborne essay style video: "you son of a b**** im in"
The Moon Presence's motivation cannot be discerned at all, specially considering how little things change unless we "kill" it. A great representation of how Great Ones cannot be understood. If what she really wanted was to to send hunters to.. hunt, and return with blood echoes for her to assimilate through the Doll that was created because of it, then it's hunger cannot ever be satiated. Making sense for the endless continuation of this nightmare. If what the Moon Presence wants was to kill Mergo, then that doesn't make sense, since Great Ones cannot truly be killed, just their physical existence on the plane we find them in.. right? Also, the "Hunt" continues, as if nothing had changed for "Flora".. The Hunter might be "offered to leave", but Gehrman, the Doll and the Dream remain. It might just resent Great Ones in general, and wants us to kick them out of our three dimensional reality. As per the artbook : "Human or no, the oozing blood is a medium of the highest grade, and the essence of the formless Great One, Oedon". There are a LOT of theories and analysis on Oedon, and it's corruption and propagation through blood, or blood itself(?). Flora itself might be Oedon (never seen in the real world, but whose presence can be felt, although formless) or a child engendered from it! So is Mergo it's sibling (both from Oedon, but from different mothers : Yharnam and Annalise)? We know Great Ones want children.. but we don't know how siblings treat each other. Anyway, I would kill to have had Runesmith Caryll in the game.. for someone with more knowledge than we'll ever have, put things into a better perspective. Or for Miyazaki to release a "design" book with all parts pertaining to the creation of the story, before he dies! I bet people would buy it.. a LOT. But alas! Bloodborne causes us Hunters to suffer for eternity.
I personally think that Flora motivation was to make a hunter it's true child, hence why she do nothing to prevent you from getting the umbilical cord and seems more indirectly helping, she must have follow Kos example
All Great Ones want one thing: a child. Laurence beckoned Flora (who’s more of an it than a she, as are all Great Ones) by using the child he got from Cainhurst after raiding it. Oedon also wants a child, and is actually the “father” of Arianna’s child. Great Ones can’t have kids, but forever long for a child of their own. Kos was already dead when it washed ashore, simply because it was pregnant. Gehrman acts as a surrogate child, and so can the player. That’s why umbilical cords, the literal, physical connection between a mother and her child, is found in the original workshop. Though the lore is really personal and phenomenological in this game. If that doesn’t click, that’s cool.
Well technically the moon presence is responsable for sustaining the dream and Gherman acts as her host Also the moon presence is directly related to the scourge of the beast as is evident by the notes left behind, also the worst hunts occur during blood moon nights That is why you go to stop the school of mensis ritual that is trying to beckon paleblood In the 3rd ending were you ascend, the hunter practically ends paleblood's influence (even if it can still exists in another reality in some form, her conscience has no rein over the dream anymore, effectively ending the night of the hunt "although we aren't still sure since the game ends abruptly after that" )
Not sure if anyone else noticed. But the Amygdala and their appearance to The Hunter: While they become visible after you beat the Vacuous Spider, you can actually see them before you do the ritual once your insight is high enough. I remember seeing them before I fought Rom because coop a lot and had enough insight to see them before I left the chapel the 1st time.
They're one of several things that can change in the game state based on your insight. Keep an eye out for the lanterns of those grey guards hold changing, enemies being replaced by harder variants etc
It's been a while since I last played the game, but even reminding myself of the atmosphere and the story gave me goosebumps. It's just brilliantly written. You can feel all the sadness, grief, madness and darkness of this world. There's so many deep messages in it as well. Everything has a purpose and everything comes back at you, even based on the way you fight. Its story is so damn complex though. It definitely needs a book to expand on certain themes and plotlines.
Even after playing through elden ring this might still be my favorite, there was just so much they did right with this game that made it stand out from the rest and even all these years later it’s the one I’ve put the most time in, I think somewhere around 300 hours total. It just can’t be matched
It's a flawless game except for the chalice dungeons imo. I wish they were just straight up removed because they aren't fun. And screw whoever decided to put a boss tied to a trophy at the bottom of it.
@@VaporeonEnjoyer1 yeah I agree 100%, I have never once had enough interest in going through them enough to make it to her, it just got old too fast for me
Bloodborne had its own unique personality that left an impression of a hole, that no other game has had the shape to effectively fill the same. This game actually made me as anxious and terrified as it did exciting me.
I hope we get a 60fps remake after the success of Elden ring. Bloodborne was my first souls game and will always be one of my favourite games of all time. If I could play one game again for the first time it would either be bloodborne or hollow knight. Just a masterpiece.
10 months late but the reason as to why Yharnam's blood is beastly is mentioned to be due to so many people using it for healing, and the Red Moon's influence over those who use it. Also those who tried to commune with the Great Ones
Bloodborne is hands down my favorite souls game I can't even guess how many times I've played through the game. Every weapon is fun and makes you switch up your playstyle and the weapon transformations is a genius mechanic.
The most important line in the game is “whatever happens you may think it amir bad dream” you only realize this after you beat the game and hear it again now with all the knowledge or “insight” you have gained
I absolutely love this game. The environment, attention to detail, addicting combat is great! Also, the music for this game is just awesome. Orchestras signing somber latin songs, adds to this game's mistique.
This is my favorite game of all time. It is the only fromsoft game that I consistently come back to every year. Just listening to the hunter’s dream invokes so many overwhelming emotions that demand another playthrough.
My personal belief is that the Hunters' Nightmare was brought upon by the residents of the fishing hamlet. The Moon rune's description says "The Great Ones that inhabit the nightmare are sympathetic in spirit, and often answer when called upon." I think that after Byrgenwerth left the village, the residents prayed for Kos to put a curse on them and their descendants (the hunters), wanting revenge or justice, and she did just that. This is further reinforced by the woman's line, "Curse the fiends," when you go into the nightmare, and by the resident outside the fishing hamlet, mumbling about Byrgenwerth being "blasphemous, murderous, blood-crazed fiends," and saying "By the wrath of mother Kos." Just my own thoughts on the matter.
The way I always saw it, If we’re taking lovecrafts original concepts to heart for bloodborne lore, was that ascended great ones were cosmic beings whose consciousness became so powerful they became untethered to their physical forms. Their minds were no longer a series of electrical patterns in an organic computer, but instead a sentience roaming existence without need for physical form. They existed on a higher plane of existence (possibly the 4th dimension) only able to interact with our plane in cerebral form, and so they created nightmares or dream dimensions where they could pull in the minds of 3rd dimensional beings to interact with them. Then being of the 4th dimension would also explain some timeline inconsistencies with great ones in the story, seeing as 4 dimensional creatures would theoretically be able to move freely through time the way that 3rd dimensional creatures can move freely through space
I completely agree. Using a higher dimension is a perspective that easily allows explanation of how Great Ones are beyond us in every sense of the word. One that allows us, mere mortals, to see how things exist in more than one place because of their meddling.. and how a being higher than us excels in understanding and manipulation of our reality. Humans killing Gods is hilarious. It makes more sense that we just bother them on a lower dimension.. maybe destroying the projection they created to try and access us, for whatever undiscernible reason.
Very happy to see your channel doing well Gingy! Been watching since For Honor season 2 & couldn’t be more appreciative of the work you put in for these videos!
My interpretation of the blood moon is that it is a form of the Moon Presence, hence the similar names and the fact that the blood moon only appears in the Hunter's Dream after the Moon Presence arrives. Also Mergo being the son of the great one Oedon, means he has no form of any kind and only exists in voice. I believe that the One Reborn may have been Mensis attempting to construct a physical vessel worthy enough for Mergo to possess.
As far as layers go you are right but The hunter's nightmare is actually the lowest possible level since if you pay attention you will see 1 Slugwoman fall from the sky in one area which means the fishing hamlet is above it. If you go to the Nightmare frontier and look down you can see the helms of boats which means that right under the nightmare frontier is the fishing hamlet. So the layers would go like Hunter's dream (Highest layer) L??? Nightmare of Mensis L3 Lecture Hall L2 Wake world L1 Rom's world L0 Nightmare frontier L-1 Fishing Hamlet L-2 Hunter's Nightmare. L-3
Also the hunters nightmare probably has all the stalactites and rocky formations because when people experience dementia parts of their brains calcify and wither hence the white calcified mounds everywhere. Bloodborne is constantly referencing the brain the amygdala being the most on the nose medical reference so this makes a lot of sense in context
If you kill Master Willem you get the Eye Rune. And if you look closely at the Milkweed Rune it spells HP. On another note there are actually 4 umbilical cord pieces. The 4th you get by killing Arianna and her child. So there’s the one in the old workshop, The one from Josephka, The one from Mergo’s wet nurse and the one from Arianna.
I mean what is there left to say, it's another from software masterpiece. With easily my favorite world aesthetic of their catalog. Only thing I would add is that the quality of life features that Sekiro and Elden ring brought can bring out the dated design flaws of Bloodborne and Dark Souls 1. Regardless, all four of those games I would happily put into my top 25 favorite games of all time
It’s such a turn. He try’s to come off as such a calm and cool character but he’s just as bloodthirsty and full of rage as any other character. Finally showing how much of a fanatic he is.
Man bloodborne is by far the best in the souls series. This was the last game I got a physical copy, at a midnight release. Its also the reason why I got a ps4, as soon as it was announced that it would be a PS exclusive. Such a perfect game, the only downside of this one, was how broke the the co oping and pvping was at launch. It was almost impossible to play with others.
I just recently played through and completed one ending for the first time. I actually owned the game from day one release, but I shelved it due to it's difficulty. Seeing all the hype surrounding Elden Ring, I decided to give it a second chance. It was an amazing and frustrating experience, haha.
Bloodborne was the first fromsoft game I ever beat, and has been the game to keep me invested deeply in fromsoft. I’ve always thought that this game really nailed worldbuilding as storytelling, and it’s systems back up its story perfectly.
Quick note: Eileen does, in fact, remember the Hunter's dream. If you make an enemy of her before the Grand Cathedral, when she kills you she has a line that says "Do you still dream? Tell the little Doll I said hello."
I've beaten this game four times and still didn't know that 😱
Never knew that! She is my favorite Fromsoft character so I have never attacked her
I don't know why people say that you lose memory of the Hunter's Dream after you're beheaded and wake up.
Fuck, Eileen is cool

Can’t wait to see new Soulsborne fans get into BB after trying out Elden Ring as their first FromSoft game!
In a way, I think Bloodborne’s unanswered (or even unanswerable) questions help to elevate it as a game about cosmic horror. We have to contend with the fact that there are aspects at play within Bloodborne’s world that entirely defy explanation or even human comprehension.
This.
I heard of this game years ago and was put off by what looked like an unbalanced nightmare only for god people. How wrong I was, how wrong I was..
this is actually a really great solution, its like the 2d object cant comprehend 3d object and 3d object cant comprehend 4d object. just like the game, we cant comprehend the dimension power of bloodborne.
I feel exactly the same way
"Lovecraftian" is a word that tends to be overused, but Bloodborne truly earns that label.
I agree, it is one thing to be cosmic horror which Lovecraft came up with it is another thing for the cosmic horror itself or anything else to be Lovecraftian.

Shit just went from 100 to 100 real quick
Its an interesting theory, I'll be honest. The only reason i have to not agree with it is that Bloodborne uses the idea of the inverted Hero's Journey, meaning that as you progress shit should get worse for the Hunter. He should not be saving children but killing them (yeah that level of bad)
@@nakfyre9512 Actually, they wanted to do that, there are even contents from early alphas regarding that. But for obvious reasons, these types of stuffs u knw, is not really suitable to be put on a game that anyone will play...

I really wanted Elden Ring to be a blood borne style instead of dark souls.

I agree that Bloodborne is one of the greatest story’s never told. Over the years I’ve inched closer to understanding and putting the puzzle together. @@thisisfyne was the video worth watching?
I found that series about half year ago. Easily the best analysis of this game there is.

I desperately need another bloodborne game in my life
Maybe bb2 would help us understand more of bb
I think we all want that, and yet deep down, we all know that any sequel would never come close to matching the first.
I just finished Lies of P and it def scratches that itch. Highly recommend. Probably the best non Fromsoft soulslike.
@@drew8235i mean, bloodborne is definitely a little aged and flawed. i think a sequel can surpass the original.
The hunt seems never ending to me
29:29 Interesting detail about the Awakening Headstones in the Hunter's Dream; whenever you select any of them, the top of the list always includes the text "Awaken Above Ground," implying that the Hunter's Dream is actually the lowest point of all the realms.
I think it's referring to the chalice dungeons, as they are below ground while Yharnam is above. I might be wrong though,
basado el pibe

This makes a lot more sense. Thank you for clearing that up.
I wouldn't say Great Ones can't interact directly with our reality. Oedon certainly can, ask Arianna for details.
@@juanausensi499 also Kos was firstly encountered in real world according to my knowledge
@@adriangacek3915 Right. And Ebrietas, too.
Quite appropriate that From Software may or may not take inspiration from a story titled “From Beyond” for Bloodborne.
“Soulsborne” is like, 7 parts souls and ONE part borne, and borne still gets to be in the name for the whole genre. Must mean something
There 4 parts with Souls in it. Also the simple reason is that when Bloodborne came out people had 3 games with Souls in the name that were similar. So fans came up with Soulsborne. Which is also why people make fun of it nowadays by making the name longer and longer with each new game that Fromsoft releases
I just call it the Souls series

Here's my theory on the Moon Presence, the Hunter's Dream and Mensis;
- The Moon presence is the cause of the beast scourge, the moon presence is very beastly in appearance whereas other great ones are kin like. Its chest is open too, leaving blood behind which is why people were able to find old blood, since this is the blood they were using to administer, they have the beastly blood within them. (Whereas Ebrietas blood used in the research hall turns people into celestials. And the people around the Fishing Hamlet have become fish people as they lived off Kos' body.)
- Now I believe Micolash wrote the four notes in the Lecture Hall as it is part of the Mensis Nightmare. These are;
"Master Willem was right. Evolution without courage will be the ruin of our race."
"Hunt the Great Ones, Hunt the Great Ones."
"The nameless moon presence beckoned by Laurence and his associates. Paleblood."
"Three third cords."
- So Micolash learnt you must consume three third cords to transcend, Mensis currently have 1 from Queen Yarnham
- To find more cords they will have to hunt great ones to have them create children.
- They found out about the moon presence so would use a special child, Mergo to lure the Moon Presence closer as it would then create its own children
"When the red moon hangs low, the line between man and beast is blurred. And when the Great Ones descend, a womb will be blessed with child."
The moon presence will later on have a child with Arianne and imposter Iosefka after Rom is killed.
"To escape this dreadful Hunter's Dream, halt the source of the spreading scourge of beasts, lest the night carry on forever."
- Gehrman's job is to stay on watch over the dream, whereas Laurence's job was to go to the Nightmare to find a way to stop it, however he became a beast. Gehrman is still waiting for the Nightmare to end before he can end the Hunter's Dream.
- The player character however ended up being the one to end the Nightmare and consume 3 cords to transcend, if that's the ending you chose.
What a great theory, really enjoyed reading it!

Amazing. Thank you for this
What always boggled me all these years of lore hunting and creteing speculation and such was WHO went down to Pthemero dungs and stuck that first syringe to collect blood samples.
That makes sense really it would explain why ebriatas mourned over the corpse of a dead "Rom". She was grieving for the loss of a child of her kin.
Rom is Willem’s child so it makes sense.

Son of a gun, he does !! Thanks for pointing this out.
Isn't oedon the moon presence?
@wassupjg under all the lore so far, oedon and the Moon Presence are two separate entities!! Oedon is formeless either in mind or physical manifestation, while the Moon Presence takes presence in the Hunters dream, once the conditions are met.
@@beyond_the_tequila_rift3194 appreciated, would've been nice to see something of oedon rather than some concept
I came across your channel this morning and I have been here all day watching these.
A masterpiece of a video, this introduced me to your channel and man do I love it keep up the good work
My theory is that the moon presence traps german to train and send hunters to fight monsters and keep the hunt going forever because he uses the blood echoes as a source of power. I derived this idea from the fact that the runes that give you more bloodechoes are the "moon" runes as if the moon presence is syphoning off some of the blood echoes you get every time you kill a beast. And through the power of these runes you are able to overpower it in a sense and collect more of the echoes for yourself.
The moon presence is siphoning off blood echoes of all the hunters to power level himself because he can’t beat orphan on his NG+6 playthrough
Ive thought about this too, yessir >;D
@@drteeth362this is true i talked to Miyazaki himself about this
I believe the Moon Presences motivation was to kill Mergo, as Mergo would one day be strong enough to rival the Moon Presence.
One small correction: Eileen the Crow isn't a hunter of hunters, she's a _hoonter_ of _hoonters_ 😂 Great video!
Perfect comments
Thank you deeply and generously for titling this video “a look back” in stead of a “retrospective”
Glad to hear it Bill thank you :)
I know is been years but i have to say, i just come across this video and is very well done. Very nice analysis. Nice job.
Crazy.
GINGY out here making nothing but BANGERS for videos never a boring video from this dude hell yeah
08:48 similarly to this, Gehrman is missing his right leg, possibly so that the beasthood infection wouldn't spread further? It would partially explain how he kept his sanity so much longer than anyone else
I mean, being possessed and used as a puppet by the moon presence definitely helps.
@@justsomeone883 yes, I'm aware that people of the past believe such things and that brass is, in reality, antimicrobial, but Gherman IS missing his leg so I've assumed something happened, for him to lose it, but we know it isn't Beast blood.
So, what was it that took his leg?
I have mixed feelings about Miyazaki not tackling the BB style and Setting again. On one hand I'd pay all the money for a sequel or spin off, on the other it stands as a singular masterpiece. I've played all the From games and it's still my uncontested favorite.
But for God's sake give us a PS5 remaster or a PC Port. This game deserves to be 60fps and in 4k. I'd pay $60 just for that
There’s nothing I’d love more than a bluepoint level remake. Bloodborne was made for the ps5 controller before it even existed
@@cryofreezie3943 Bluepoint aren't very good with grotesque, I feel like they'd make a game that looks too clean and pretty
@@xenonecromera have you seen the tower of latria? I think they’d succeed nicely. Also maybe not a whole remake. But perhaps a 4k 60fps remaster. Fix the aliasing
@@cryofreezie3943 Maybe it's more of an art style difference between the studios. From is very good at making pissy, dirty, dark, diffcult to read visuals. @@cryofreezie3943 keep bluepoint away from remakes lmao
I find it funny that not understanding how the realms work fits into the eldritch theme. Reminds me of an explanation of madness I saw once where someone said that if you glimpsed something you couldn't understand and then spent time trying figure it out, to someone with no context you look mad.
Another channel with not nearly enough subscribers, been binging your channel the past few days and the content is incredible and so well done.
Almost a certainty you'll pop off soon, brother.
THE best game of my lifetime!
I love how every time you started to discuss an idea, I planned on commenting with additions.. but you did so yourself a couple of seconds after. Goes to show that you, as much as I, have really delved deep into it and how much you also love it. I really appreciate it! You did a great job at summarizing this "mess" of art.
I'm both saddened that we will never get the full picture.. but it's so on theme, that I can't be mad about it.
As amazing as Elden has been. I just can’t bring myself to saying anything is better than this Masterpiece.
Excellent job, sir. Great video.
I think ds1 is better
elden ring’s quality takes a gigantic dip in quality towards the end imo. bloodborne is mostly solid all the way through, though
edit: just noticed i wrote “quality takes a dip in quality” but i ain’t changing it lmao
I feel that my friend
@@yourehereforthatarentyou yeah especially the "great" and "aweaome" chalice dungeons which are a substantial part of the game
Whoever voiced Alfred is amazing. I lmfao every time I hear that manic rant and laugh. Just incredible.
This is a GREAT video! Although I have an issue with something... specifically 42:05 "Moon Presence is the host of the dream"
The hosts are supposed to be people. For instance, Micolash is the host of the Mensis nightmare, under Mergo.
In a similar fashion, the Hunter's Dream (our hub) and the Hunter's Nightmare (DLC) are both hosted by the same person: *Gehrman*
The Hunter's Dream is not a real place, it's a dream-like plane reminiscent of the workshop, where the tombstones are not real burial places aside for one.
---
One last thing: the Living Failures are not meant to be emissaries, but great ones themselves. This video seemed unsure about it, but there's a description somewhere that confirms this.
Maybe the real Yharnam were the friends we made along the way
I remember the lead up to the game, project beast was all we could gleam from rumor, the anticipation, then the trailer reveal, the souls fan were thrilled, victorian gothic with werewolf and beast, the theories of vampires, greater vampires, perhaps even chimera or great beast hydra were born from the single trailer, little do we know we have witnessed one of the single greatest plot twist and utilization of lovecrarftian horror in the gaming history
This sounds plausible, but too good to be true…
Likely all the Great Ones were once human or some other mortal being before ascending except maybe Odeon.
Vacuous means lacking in intelligence
So I think the point was that because she wasn’t very intelligent there was no danger in her gaining knowledge of the eldritch truth and she would simply follow the instructions given to her prior to her transformation even after learning the truth, but as with anything, it’s all speculation!
Sounds a lot like Radahn in Elden Ring, holding back the stars, even in a diminished state, until we defeat him to progress.
Dang dude good job!! 👍 I re started Bloodborne for the first time in years. When I first started about 4 years ago I looked up pretty much every lore video I could find and this way is by far the best!!
What about vaatividya
Lovecraft.
I mean.... tell me that isnt BloodBorne in a nutshell right there.
me who spent over 800 hours in bb and almost equaly as much in diving into the lore of bb.
sees a bloodborne essay style video:
"you son of a b**** im in"
If he's in, I'm in.
Well technically the moon presence is responsable for sustaining the dream and Gherman acts as her host
Also the moon presence is directly related to the scourge of the beast as is evident by the notes left behind, also the worst hunts occur during blood moon nights
That is why you go to stop the school of mensis ritual that is trying to beckon paleblood
In the 3rd ending were you ascend, the hunter practically ends paleblood's influence (even if it can still exists in another reality in some form, her conscience has no rein over the dream anymore, effectively ending the night of the hunt "although we aren't still sure since the game ends abruptly after that" )
@@hopebringer2348 I also tend to think Oedon is the father of Mergo as well, due to being "the unseen"
Your mortal shell one made me so happy. Youre very good at this man. Keep it going
Thank you! Mortal Shell was such a fun game, maybe I’ll do a similar video on that game in the future since it’s been so long.
Not sure if anyone else noticed. But the Amygdala and their appearance to The Hunter:
While they become visible after you beat the Vacuous Spider, you can actually see them before you do the ritual once your insight is high enough.
20 months late here😅
Bloodborne is such a cool game and story. I love cosmic horror like this. Even when it’s not scary it’s unsettling.
This is further reinforced by the woman's line, "Curse the fiends," when you go into the nightmare, and by the resident outside the fishing hamlet, mumbling about Byrgenwerth being "blasphemous, murderous, blood-crazed fiends," and saying "By the wrath of mother Kos."
Just my own thoughts on the matter.
Wow, very eloquently and accurately stated and I can’t believe it doesn’t have thousands of likes!?!? #FACTS
Very happy to see your channel doing well Gingy! Been watching since For Honor season 2 & couldn’t be more appreciative of the work you put in for these videos!
Damn that was years ago. Glad to see you are still here. Thank you!
So the layers would go like
Hunter's dream (Highest layer) L???
Nightmare of Mensis L3
Lecture Hall L2
Wake world L1
Rom's world L0
Nightmare frontier L-1
Fishing Hamlet L-2
Hunter's Nightmare.
Regardless, all four of those games I would happily put into my top 25 favorite games of all time
Alfred’s voice acting after mauling the Queen is some of my favorite in any game
It’s such a turn. He try’s to come off as such a calm and cool character but he’s just as bloodthirsty and full of rage as any other character. Finally showing how much of a fanatic he is.
This game is so good that it gets 1.8M views 7 years later,
Just love it
I recently finished this game, and it's slowly becoming one of my favorite games ever
Easily my favorite video of the year. Amazing work!
Glad to see one of my favourite old for honor RUclipsrs from years past has branched out so much
