During my first playthrough, all I was told was "A hoonter must hoont." And so hoont I did, I just hoonted everyone and everything in the game without a single clue on what's actually going on.
Par for the course in a SoulsBorne game. You might eventually work out “what the heck” is going on; but only if you’re lucky will you figure out “why”.
I just love how it starts as a Van Helsing like setting, killing werewolves and other traditional beasts, then it takes a hard turn into Eldritch horror. I love this stuff man. I just wish I was better at the game. I would love a sequel.
@@thebeheaded7706 That's the code for a Chalice dungeon, literally CUMMMFPK. It's a bugged dungeon that allows you to gain a ton of blood passively every time you enter. So, to get there, beat the Blood Starved Beast and bring the Pthumerian Chalice back to the Hunter’s Dream. Choose to enter a glyph and there you go.
Hearing Gherman cry out to his friends to be freed from his dream like that hit me hard, its very frightening to think about being inprisoned and trapped somewhere with no hope of getting out. Great game though.
@@Canthev Just realised this recently but all of the scholars of Willem who became the heads of each of the sub sections of the Cathedral Ward were trapped in some form of Nightmare. Laurence was trapped in the Hunter's Nightmare where he proceeded to transform into a Cleric Beast, Micolash, head of the School of Mensis, ended up being the closest to the great ones as he managed to get inside of the same building as one in a nightmare realm and finally, Gehrman, leader of the hunters, was trapped in the Hunter's Dream. All of the people who discovered the eldritch truth were either trapped in an area to the point where they couldn't spread their knowledge or transformed into beasts that people just wanted to kill or they just lost their memories (all 3 of which can happen to your character in each of the endings). It seems to me that the one thing that the Great Ones are consistent at is silencing the truth about their existence.
Gehrman could have simply committed suicide in the dream tho to escape 😂 Or he could have acted like a dick and make the next hunter entering the dream rage and kill him so he could wake up in the morning sun
ilia rasouli I dont think there's a "real" good ending, you might say the good ensing's the one where you defeat the hunters nightmare but you might also say that thats the good ending imo
@@quifshanonen i haven't played the game, but from what i've seen of the lore *cough* and a comment *cough* all 3 endings can be considered "good". If you defeat hunter's dream, then you've freed yourself If you kill gerhman, you will save him from the hunter's dream and help the hunters that finish the hunt If you become a space worm, then you're counted as a great one with the most power (something alonge these lines, polish this in your own mind xD)
Bloodborne's story in a nutshell: Willem: Yo humanity needs to evolve, but don't use the blood to do so! Lawrence: k *proceeds to use blood to do so* *everyone who uses the blood goes insane and mutates* Willem: Psh, idiots. Insight is the way to evolve! *everyone who uses insight goes insane and mutates*
I like the second ending to be honest. Gherman needs a break. Tag me in. You can listen to him beg for help in his sleep. For someone to wake him from the dream world. He pleads for freedom, and to release him from his "shackles" - his duty to guide new hunters. He's the one guiding you through the nightmare, and when you finally come to him in the end, he frees you so that *you* may live a normal life. He fights you because he knows that it is for your own good. If he kills you in the dream, he *saves* you from being stuck in it. But who's going to save him? That's why I didn't mind getting the second ending. It's my turn to guide the hunters, and for him to finally have peace after all these years.
I just realized that Laurence rejects Willem's warning and doubles down on his research. But the MC (if you take reach the childhood beginning ending), saves Gehrman by freeing him from his dream and his puppet master. That's poetic. This mess started because a teacher was forsaken. This mess ends because a teacher was saved.
this is no poetry, this is a straight up tragedy. There really is no good ending, your options are - escape the horror and leave with your dreamy memories in guilt -take the place of your teacher as a self sacrifise -become an entity so different from your own self, that you propably can't even call it yourself anymore. This is why this is a true horror, no matter your struggle, no matter your options, there is no light in your options, only someone escapes the darkness at best. At least this is how i understand it.
@@bigbackman3609 When coming into contact with an entity such as an eldrich horror. There is no "winning" Only the hope you survive the night with your life.
Gehrman sobbing in his sleep begging to be released rips my heart out of my chest. Someone as old as he is, crying and begging for the nightmares to end just... Damn, it hurts to hear it.
Bloodborne, a perfect combination of Victorian scenery, Gothic and Cosmic horror. FromSoftWare stole my black heart, they took Dracula, The Wolfman, Frankenstein and several other classic Gothic Horror stories along with Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft and made them into a game.
I think the path to become an Old One is actually a mix of insight and blood. Insight to see the things hidden from our eyes and the blood to give us the strength to ascend. But if you delve too deep into one or the other then you become a monstrosity or a drooling "madman". I love the theory that the Moon Presence is a predator of Old Ones, casting its hunters out into the dream like a net looking for prey and as you yourself grow stronger, so does the Moon Presence. But with you consuming the 3 umbilical cords, you become something more. It gives you a chance to take the Moon Presence's place as an Old One yourself. Fulfilling a destiny meant only for a few.
Youngster Joey If we take loading screens to be the old blood, it's alarming how well the game lore reflected reality. From gave us those loading screens despite the warnings of clearly much wiser people and, well... the nightmare was born.
My favorite game of all time. Really nothing else comes close for me. I’ll never forget my first play through. That feeling of slowly realizing what I’m playing is a surreal, deeply mysterious, lovecraftian masterpiece. I feel lucky I went in blind. It still makes my imagination run wild. It’s really hard not to gush to this day.
Same here, man. I've been playing games since the early 80's on just about every system you can imagine, and Bloodborne is my absolute favorite game, any system, all time. It's truly a masterpiece and I loved it from the veery beginning. I hadn't played it in probably 4 or 5 years and just recently started a brand new game. Totally hooked.... Again! This will be my 4th playthrpugh, I think.
It's one of the most remarkably replayable games ever, and it manages to instantly conjure chest-tightening dread no matter how many times you've played through it. The push-forward combat is my favorite of the entire FromSoft ouevre (yes, I like it even better than Sekiro). The fucking ATMOSPHERE, MY GOD. The depth, the drama, the perfectly-engineered multiplayer components. The hats. Bloodborne is everything.
Okay, but you can't tell me why this story lore was clear. The first time you played it.There's no way for u to get all this first playthrough without a guide
True but I'll argue that since the Great Ones couldn't mate with each other to reproduce and went onto impregnate some Pthumarians and some humans that Bloodborne's lore could also be summed up with "Goddammit Horniness!"
Ah, Vaati, or some say Vaatividya. As you once did for the vacuous Rom, grant us eyes, grant us eyes. Plant eyes on our brains, to cleanse us of our ignorance.
After five years of playing this game over and over, delving into the lore and studying it like a bible, and even claiming it as my favourite game, I finally realise... The game is called Bloodborne because that's how the disease is spread: "It's gone airborne/waterborne/BLOODborne." I'm an idiot.
By using the umbilical cords, we gain Insight. And only by gaining Insight, we can fight the Moon Presence and ascend to godhood. Master Willem said that what we need are more eyes. So in the end, Master Willem was right, but he took his own words too literally.
Holy shit, Gehrman's dialogue at 26:56 when he's sleep-talking is some of the best voice-acting I've ever heard. The way he says "please" at the end literally made me tear up. Man, and I never even heard it through any of my play-throughs.
Ivan F hearing that made his fight super personal for me... old man i know you only fight me to save me from eternal servitude but i will take your place.. rest well in the waking world Gehrman
It's also a testament to how vague the storytelling is. It's great once you view a dozen RUclips videos but as a standalone in the game it's subtle almost beyond recognition.
I find the Healing Church's goal to be ironic...poetically so. They sought to harness power and knowledge far beyond their comprehension, hoping to ascend to a higher level of consciousness. But in the end...humanity is nothing but beasts when compared to the Great Ones...and thus...the old blood revealed humanity's true nature. At least...that's how I interpret Bloodborne.
thats quite the profound observation, and a very reasonable interpretation of the lore, id say. ....but then, what is so majestic about taking on the form of a baby squid or some 10 legged spider with tentacles and eyes lol?
@@C_The_Guy That just proves how lowly we are that we can't even recognize their majesty. I'm sure a fish wouldn't have a clue how great being a human is either
Had to come back to this after YEARS- having just watched Jack's new series. Thank you for everything you do for the community! Always our #1 pick for soulsborne lore!
WHERE LOOKING FOR THIS ONE!!! FFS, I remember being confused about this like 3 years ago or something, but then forgot about it... and now 3 years later I'm back and still just as confused wondering over what happened
@@holymayo6417 Alright, here's the three endings Bad ending: you are free of the hunter's dream. You get to live a normal life, but you are once again human and ignorant to the truth. Yes, you are free, but you know nothing, and knowledge is power in this universe. Neutral ending: you become the immortal leader of the hunt, and you are reasonably involved in the matters of the ascended. Upsides are, you know what's going on, and you're very powerful. Downside, you're a puppet in the game of the Great Ones and you'll be doing the Moon Presence's bidding forever. Good ending: you become a young great one. You have all the knowledge, and are practically a god. You could use this power to elevate humanity into godhood, but in gaining this power you have lost all your humanity. You may not even be human enough to care about Yharnam anymore. The endings are basically on a scale from absolute humanity and no power to absolute power and no humanity. Which you prefer is your choice
@HungLikeALemur They remember being stuck in the dream and hunting beasts but they don't remember anything else regarding the Great Ones or the truth about the Healing Church and Byrgenweirth. How did they get free from the dream? Did they kill a Great One as well and Gherman freed them? That's what Djura and Eileen don't tell you cause they don't remember.
One of the things I loved about Bloodborne versus Dark Souls is how the game is set right in the middle of an explosive yet climactic turning point in the universe's lore. In Dark Souls there were many key events that the lore eludes to that we don't get to be a part of, the primeval man, the creation of demons, lighting the kiln for the first time, slaying the dragons, infighting between the factions of the first flame, etc., but the player is thrust into the world that is more left in the devastating aftermath of these events rather than being a key part of it. It's meant to show the almost insignificance of the player in the context of this vast landscape, but this is almost what gives the story of Bloodborne so much weight and power in comparison. There was a great deal of lore that the player doesn't participate in Bloodborne sure, but they act more to set the stage for the world that the hunter is about to be violently thrust into. Throughout the story, the player slays the most threatening and powerful beasts in the town, severs the Church's ties to the cosmic great ones, shatters the Nightmare of Mensis and slays both the infant God and its mother within, and potentially brings on a new age of prosperity for the people in this great city... all of these dominoes perfectly being set to fall before the character arrives to tip them over. All the while the motivations for doing so is up to the one controlling the hunter: you can be a killer looking for the next big challenge blindly accepting the tasks set ahead of you, reject the end to a long night but be chained to an even greater nightmare as punishment for your bloodlust, or do what no one else could do before you and attain the ascension to godhood that everyone so desperately sought after. I love the story in both universes, but as the players gained more insight (huehue) into the lore of Bloodborne the weight of the character's importance to the overarching story helped leave a much greater impact looking back on it in my opinion.
The idea with dark souls is that you're a nobody and what you're doing anyone could do. I think the story is made is a way to fit that, you do less impactful things that wouldve already happened if you were never there. !!!!!!!bloodborne spoiler!!!!!!! in bloodborne you're setting the stage for the next era, in my favorite ending where sit in the chair like German implying that you're bringing in a new age for hunters.
Bloodborne's world is rich with history and lore, much of which has already unfolded by the time the player arrives. The ancient discoveries at Byrgenwerth, the schism with the Healing Church, and the subsequent events have all set the stage for the Hunter's journey. The player steps into this intricate web of events as an outsider, seemingly insignificant at first. This insignificance is emphasized by the vastness of Yharnam and the complexity of the cosmic horrors the player encounters. Throughout the game, the Hunter confronts and defeats the most formidable entities, from the scourge beasts plaguing Yharnam to the Great Ones manipulating events from the shadows. Each victory dismantles a part of the corrupt and decaying structures within the city. By severing the Healing Church's connection to the Great Ones and shattering the Nightmare of Mensis, the player disrupts the cycles of madness and corruption that have gripped Yharnam. These actions have far-reaching implications for the city's future. The motivations driving the Hunter's actions are left to the player's interpretation. Whether seeking to end the nightmare, pursue power, or achieve godhood, the player's choices shape the narrative's conclusion. The game's multiple endings reflect the diverse paths the Hunter can take. From being trapped in an endless cycle to ascending as a Great One, each ending underscores the significant impact of the player's journey. The intricate lore that the player does not directly participate in serves to enhance the weight of their actions. The history of Byrgenwerth, the rise of the Healing Church, and the fall of Old Yharnam all create a backdrop that gives context and depth to the Hunter's quest. As the player gains Insight (both metaphorically and literally), they come to understand the full scope of their actions. The Hunter's deeds resonate through the fabric of Yharnam's reality, leaving a lasting legacy. Bloodborne's narrative structure, which places the player in a vast, pre-existing world with deep lore, allows the Hunter's actions to have a profound impact. The seemingly insignificant Hunter becomes a pivotal figure whose journey shapes the fate of Yharnam and its inhabitants. This dynamic creates a powerful and memorable storytelling experience, where the player's growing understanding of the world enhances the significance of their actions and choices.

+Lord Gyrus Something I'm truly greatful for... The feeling they put in the voice acting, it makes the characters feel so alive. Especially in darker themed games like this.
it hit me so hard when he said please at the end in that desperate scared tone, it actually made me feel a little scared and uncomfortable in a way. It just sounded way too real
+ECW Platinum "...Oh, Laurance, Master Willem... Somebody, helm me... Unshackle me, please, anybody... I've had enough of this dream... The night blocks all sight. Oh, sombody, please..." ;_;
Wolfgang Amadeus Lee Not quite. philosophy and mythology can be of past, present and/or future and are not necessarily true, usually extremely subjective from person to person. History is objective facts of what has happened in the past, unfortunately though it can be forgotten and fabricated. Literature is basically just the documentation of, but not limited to, the other 3 mentioned topics.
Gehrman is the true champ of bloodborne, the same old man begging to be killed and crying kicks your ass just so you don't have to go through the same pain he does. I cry everytime I think back to this
I played this game for 3 weeks straight, getting all trophies and endings, getting the platinum after every other trophy, DLC included. Yet never did I see Gehrman in the dream crying like that. That actually kinda hurt.
After playing this in NG+ after watching this video makes me think my character is complaining "I only wanted medicine, but all i get weapons, coats, and a job"
Stephen Rosal people come to this place asking for small things only to be asked to do a lot of things I love this game. sometimes I like to imagine the story as this guy comes to the city in search of Medicine only to be never heard of again after defeating the moon presence he becomes a giant squid. my character becomes a great one and is never heard of Again by his own village.
Came to this one horse town looking for some medicine, ended up on a wheelchair sneezing my nose off in this polen-infested place while a creepy pale girl stands there doing jackshit.
27:46 - That got me thinking... What if there were actually 2 goals? Perhaps, in addition to Moon Presence's desire to "eliminate" other Great Ones, there was also Gherman's desire, between the lines, to end the nightmare. That and the fact that we started a fight against the first hunter when we didn't "accept death" makes me believe that Gherman, in addition to wanting to get rid of the nightmare he was placed in, also didn't want to see other hunters suffering the same punishment. This story is so captivating, but at the same time it's too much for my potato brain... By the way, excellent work! A video that is certainly among my favorites for several reasons!
"Good hunter, let me free you from this evil I devote my life to sustain the dream Oh, the insidious moon Oh, these mysterious nights Great one, look upon me and grant everlasting mercy" Is the rough translation of the latin lyrics in the Gehrman theme, in my opinion, it definitely lends credit to your theory :)
The 1st and 3rd sounds like the good endings 1st: you are basically relieved of duty after you defeated a great one 3rd: you ascend and become a god basically
3rd also has all the benefits of ending 2, what with freeing gehrman from the dream before the moon fight, without having to martyr yourself in the process.
I think the 1st ending is the saddest. You gain all this knowledge about other beings, and become important. Only to wake up, and not remember. And who knows how much time has passed sense you were trapped in the dream
You can’t improve perfection I feel like Miyazaki won’t make a Bloodborne 2 because he is too scared to ruin a masterpiece and not live up to the first one
@@raginlemon9261 have you seen the rest of fromsofts catalog? Nothing to be afraid of. I just want an aztec bloodborne because 1.) its meant to be. The overlap between bloodborne lore and aztec culture is eery. 2.) when was the last time we got a mesoamerican culture represented in media? Fromsoft is good at adapting real life into new worlds, it would be awesome. 3.) more bloodborne. I need more.
@Joseph Waters Yoyoyo what? Hol up, sekiro is a great game. I said the rest of fromsofts catalog, including Sekiro. If you dont like aggressive and fast, thats fair, but that doesnt mean the game is bad just cause you dont like it. Plus, if played in stealth, its one of the most methodical and slow games ive played, making for a great mix of planning in stealth and improvisation in battle, with the revive mechanic serving well as a way for the player to change up their playstyle from one to other without it being frustrating.
I actually convinced my mum to watch this today (of all days, the day where they teased 'something' from FROMSOFT at the game awards) she normally starts to talk over stuff when she gets bored. in this case, she was basically quiet for the entire half hour video. well done Vaait. you managed to keep my 60yr old non-gamer mother's attention for a whole 30mins, I think its a testament to your storytelling skill.
id love to see that aswell but im glad that wasnt included in the game. wouldve ruined the experience, this whole "not knowing where you are or whats happening" as if you could only see one drop of water at a time in an ocean of lore
I'm picturing a scene from Dickens, maybe Oliver Twist. Then someone spontaneously turns into a mind-fucking form at the produce stand and dismembers a poor bitch trying to browse the apples before running off down an alley shrieking about eyes. Everyone else is more interested in how the pears are overpriced. Not one fuck is given that day.
+Jake Hunter Lol can you imagine the average moviegoer watching Bloodborne? That probably hate the shit out of it. It's got badass beasts and combat but i think the story is too dark and abstract.

Only just got into Bloodborne this year and it is my first From game. Just finished it, and I am absolutely mind blown. Can't believe how insanely good this game is and it's over 5 years old. I instantly started NG+ and I plan to play through it all again at least once. I very quickly fell in love with this game. It goes without saying that I had many questions about the story once the credits rolled, and you have cleared up a lot for me in this. Thank you so much for this amazing video! Your channel truly is one of the best out there.
Thanks for a calming voice in a restless time. It's probably a little twisted, but I find it somewhat comforting that we're dealing with straightforward disease rather than some eldritch nastiness.
I dont think that's twisted at all. In fact, I feel the same. We are dealing with a terrifying disease, but at least we don't have to deal with going insane over just a glimpse of something eldritch. I personally use dark fantasy and cosmic horror as an escapism, it really comforts me because I feel things cannot get any worse. I suppose it's a bit like the theory that the Book of Revelations was written so that the christains under persecution could take some sort of comfort in knowing there would be an ultimate end to everything.
I had this theory when studying the schism between the Church and the Academy: what if they're both right and wrong? What if, for true evolution, humans need both the Blood and the Insight? What if we need to temper one with the other: have the Blood evolve the body and the Insight evolve the mind, and use each to temper the flaws of the other? I mean, look at the third True ending where the player becomes a Great One. We level up our character with echoes of Blood, building our bodies in advancement through transfusion of the Old Blood; yet we also need the Insight gained from the Umbilical Cords to truly ascend. Could that be the true answer to how humans can evolve beyond our current state?
Your theory about the necessity of both Blood and Insight for true evolution in Bloodborne is both insightful and well-founded. The idea that a balance of these two elements is essential for ascension aligns with several key aspects of the game's lore and the ultimate transformation of the player character. Led by Master Willem, Byrgenwerth scholars pursued knowledge and enlightenment through Insight, seeking to evolve the mind by understanding and communing with the Great Ones. Willem's mantra, "Fear the Old Blood," reflects his belief that reliance on Blood would lead to corruption and the beastly scourge. Laurence and his followers, who split from Byrgenwerth, believed in the power of the Old Blood to physically elevate humanity. They pursued blood ministration, which led to miraculous healing and superhuman abilities but also to the beastly transformations. Throughout the game, players use Blood Echoes to enhance their physical and combat abilities. This represents the Church's philosophy of using Blood to achieve physical evolution. Insight, gained from encountering cosmic entities and using Madman's Knowledge, provides a deeper understanding of the game's eldritch truths. Higher Insight allows players to perceive more aspects of the world, such as additional enemies and altered environments, reflecting Byrgenwerth's approach to mental evolution. To achieve the "Childhood's Beginning" ending, the player must consume three Third Umbilical Cords, which provide significant Insight. This allows the player to resist the Moon Presence and ultimately transform into a Great One, emphasizing the necessity of mental and spiritual evolution in conjunction with the physical power gained from Blood. Your idea that true evolution requires both Blood and Insight to temper the flaws of each is compelling: Blood: While it offers physical power and healing, it also risks inducing the beastly scourge. The visceral nature of Blood can corrupt and transform humans into beasts if used excessively or without understanding. Insight: Provides knowledge and awareness but can lead to madness and despair. High Insight exposes the character to the horrors of the cosmos, which can be overwhelming without a strong physical foundation. The synthesis of Blood and Insight may indeed represent the ideal path to ascension in Bloodborne's universe. This balance allows for the physical evolution and resilience provided by Blood while also achieving the mental enlightenment and understanding granted by Insight. The third ending, where the player becomes an infant Great One, symbolizes this perfect harmony, suggesting that true evolution transcends the limitations of focusing solely on either Blood or Insight.
The pinnacle of video games right here. I didn’t know a thing about the story. I knew the world itself told me a personal story that resonated with me. The change from hunting beasts and monsters to alien abominations was so satisfying and had me so hooked. This is the game that made me fall in love and try other Fromsoft/souls games. Now I can’t really enjoy other games nearly as much as anything from FROM.
I always like to think that when you do kill him not only you free him from the nightmare but you send him to the heavens with his fellow Yarhnam compatriots thus being at peace once and for all!
Darth, that idea might be possibly if you take his place. If you pick up on his offer for your own redemption or you kill that boss after him, Gehrman will unfortunately still be there. I believe that the poor soul is trapped.
Enzo M87 Yeah. After hearing Gehrman having his own nightmare in the nightmare, something extraordinarely bad must've been happening to Gehrman. Poor guy.
I believe I am too plump to fight the Moon Presence. I would be too slow. If someone would be so kind as to distract it, maybe I could make it FACE MY WRATH!
I can't get over how fucking good everything about this game is. Absolute masterpiece. Dark Souls is incredible but Bloodborne is Miyazaki's magnum opus.
I have always believed that the third ending is the best of the three as the first has you leave and terrible event continue to transpire, in the second you just become Gerhman, but the third leaves some hope of a future for Yharnam with a human becoming a great one
I don't even own Bloodborne, yet I still enjoy sitting here for half an hour listening to its amazing lore. It's deep story and beautiful setting is absolutely astounding.
+italo medel gutierrez Why do people always say shit like "this game deserves a movie"? A movie would add nothing and would ruin it. The movie can never live up to your experience with the game because YOU experienced it all yourself.
italo medel gutierrez Not at all... It hurts my feelings that film studios often make movies for the lowest common denominator people with no imagination who don't want to think for themselves.
Eldritch Enigma noo not really! Nioh is really good but still the Souls formula can’t be perfectly replicated. Also Nioh loses its balance the more you progress in the game and you start seeing repetition especially with the weapons
I played Bloodborne for the first time this year. We all want to chase that nostalgia feeling we had as a kid or that moment that truly captures your entire imagination but as we get older, it becomes a rarer moment. Bloodborne did that for me this year. It took me to that place where the experiences i was having for the first time around Bloodborne, i truly fell in love and it grabbed every bit of my attention. The story telling, the fabulous environment, the small details, the emotionally grabbing music and how fantastic the eldrich horror was pulled off. I usually shy away from doing NG+ as i get fatigued from playing over the same game again too soon but i sat through and played through 3 times back-to-back-to-back including the DLC to see all 3 endings immediately after finishing my first playthrough. And, i got more enjoyment after the subsequent playthroughs as i pieced everything together. It's head and shoulders my favourite game.
My God the amount of lore storytelling within the game with very few cutscenes or dialogue is legendary. Masterpiece... imagination helps you fill in the blanks, beautiful

So, what I'm getting from the Doll's Tear is that Gherman is just a sad bro who had to ascend his consciousness into the Hunter's Dream to guide the hunters. In doing so, he leaves his love (Lady Maria) who cannot ascend with him because she has her own part to play for the Healing Church. Gherman made the doll (as the doll said, she was "made out of love") so he would have a piece of his love with him. Poor guy...
Your interpretation of Gehrman and the Doll in Bloodborne captures the tragic and poignant elements of their story. Gehrman's relationship with Lady Maria, his role in the Hunter's Dream, and the creation of the Doll are all interwoven in a tale of love, loss, and duty. Gehrman serves as the caretaker of the Hunter's Dream, guiding new hunters and helping them navigate the challenges of Yharnam. His presence in the dream is a result of his pact with the Moon Presence, a Great One. Gehrman’s role isolates him from the waking world, trapping him in a cycle of guiding hunters through the nightmare. This eternal duty weighs heavily on him, contributing to his sorrow and longing for release. Lady Maria was Gehrman's greatest pupil, and there are strong implications of a deep emotional bond between them. This bond is reflected in Gehrman's creation of the Doll, modeled after Maria. After the events at the Fishing Hamlet and her involvement with the Healing Church's experiments, Maria retreats to the Astral Clocktower, where she continues her work and ultimately meets her end. Her separation from Gehrman, both physically and in terms of their respective duties, adds to the tragedy. The Doll's statement that she was "made out of love" indicates Gehrman's longing to keep a part of Maria with him. The Doll serves as a comforting presence in the Hunter's Dream, providing solace to Gehrman in his lonely existence. The Doll embodies Gehrman's unfulfilled love and his attempt to cope with the loss and loneliness of his situation. She is a constant reminder of what he has sacrificed and the person he cares deeply about but can never truly be with. The Tear Stone given by the Doll can be used to create the Tear Blood Gem, which enhances the Hunter's abilities. This gift symbolizes the Doll's care for the Hunter and, by extension, Gehrman's enduring influence and affection. The Doll's Tear and her dialogue reflect her own awareness of her role and the emotions tied to her existence. Although she is an artificial being, her interactions with the Hunter suggest a depth of feeling and understanding. Gehrman's story is one of deep sorrow and duty. His creation of the Doll as a surrogate for Lady Maria highlights his enduring love and the personal sacrifices he has made. Trapped in the Hunter's Dream, Gehrman is a tragic figure, burdened by his responsibilities and haunted by memories of the past. The Doll, crafted with love and serving as a comforting presence, underscores the emotional depth of Gehrman's character and the complexities of his relationships. This adds a layer of poignancy to the game's dark and atmospheric narrative, enriching the player's experience and understanding of the world of Bloodborne.
I realy dont know where to say this, but i was reading "the thing on the doorstep" by lovecraft and i realized one thing. A theory that i've never heard about and it makes a lot of sense. Here is my theory: the Gehrman we meet in the hunter's dream is no longer Gehrman... is actualy the moon presence. He is possessed by the moon presence the whole time. We speak with the moon presence and this is why he hesitate to say is name at the beginning of the game. The only time we can hear THE REAL Gherman talk is when he is sleeping. The thing on the doorstep is a story about body snatcher and there is a part when 'the possessed' is in the Arkham Asylum (batlol) and he says this - “I had to do it-I had to do it . . . it’ll get me . . . it’ll get me . . . down there . . . down there in the dark. . . . Mother, mother! Dan! Save me . . . save me. . . .” - in a moment when he has control of his body. Sounds a lot like Gehrman calling out for Lawrence and Master Willem to save him. And this also is what the "second ending" is about. The moon prensence takes control over our body, just like Gherman before us. I am not sure about some details but i'm 100% sure this is not just a coincidence. (sorry for my english, i am italian :D)
I know this is 4 years old and the replies are 2 years old, but I don't support this theory. Its a great theory, but I think that gehrman begs Lawrence and willem to save him is because while sleeping, gehrman enters the hunter's nightmare(the dlc world). And when he cries while sleeping, you can't help but notice that its the same cry as the orphan of kos! After you kill orphan of kos, the doll tells you that gehrman sleeps peacefully now. Because orphan was the source of that nightmare and why gehrman was trapped in it when he slept(just like mergo was the great one of nightmare of mensis and moon presence of hunter's dream). And gehrman regrets his actions in the fishing hamlet(the hunters wiped out the people of the fishing hamlet).
Your theory about Gehrman being possessed by the Moon Presence is intriguing and has substantial merit when examined within the context of Bloodborne's themes and its inspiration from Lovecraftian horror. The parallels you've drawn with "The Thing on the Doorstep" by H.P. Lovecraft provide a compelling foundation for this interpretation. When the player first meets Gehrman, he hesitates before introducing himself, which could suggest that he is struggling with his identity or that he is partially under the control of the Moon Presence. This hesitation might be indicative of the duality within him, where the Moon Presence has a significant influence over his actions and speech. Gehrman's more lucid and sorrowful dialogue when found sleeping ("Oh, Laurence, Master Willem, someone please help me...") contrasts sharply with his more composed demeanor when awake, suggesting that his true self emerges in these vulnerable moments. This aligns with your point about "The Thing on the Doorstep," where the true person only surfaces when they can wrest control from the possessing entity. The Moon Presence, a Great One, could be exercising a form of control or influence over Gehrman, using him as a mouthpiece to interact with the hunters in the dream. This would mirror Lovecraftian themes where otherworldly entities possess and manipulate humans for their purposes. The Second Ending ("Childhood's Beginning"): In this ending, the Moon Presence attempts to bind the player to the Hunter's Dream, similar to how Gehrman was bound. The fact that the Moon Presence immediately steps in to control the player after Gehrman's defeat suggests a direct transfer of control or influence. The player's acceptance of the offer results in becoming the new caretaker, implying that the Moon Presence continues its cycle of control through successive hunters. Gehrman's creation of the Doll, modeled after Lady Maria, as a comforting presence in the Hunter's Dream, indicates his deep emotional ties and possibly his last act of free will before being fully subjugated by the Moon Presence. The Doll serves as a reminder of Gehrman's humanity and his connections, which might be overshadowed by the Moon Presence's control. In "The Thing on the Doorstep," the protagonist struggles with possession, losing control over their body and actions to an external entity. This resonates with Gehrman's situation, where his true self is suppressed by the Moon Presence. The moments of lucidity and cries for help are echoed in Gehrman's sleep-talk, where he calls out to Laurence and Master Willem, revealing his desperate situation. Your theory that Gehrman is possessed or heavily influenced by the Moon Presence throughout Bloodborne adds a rich layer of complexity to his character and aligns well with the game's Lovecraftian horror elements. The parallels to "The Thing on the Doorstep" underscore the themes of possession, loss of control, and the struggle to maintain one's identity against an overpowering otherworldly force. This interpretation deepens the tragedy of Gehrman's character and provides a new perspective on the nature of the Moon Presence's influence within the Hunter's Dream.
Yes, the great ones were a powerful and respectable bunch. They granted me supernatural abilities like being able to store on more potion. The rune had the practical value of a pocket. Caryll could have taught the world the concept of a pocket instead of transcribing the great ones’ magical abilities of being able to hold one extra potion.
Been seven years since this video came out, I saw it the day it was uploaded. I keep coming back to it though, my playthrough of Bloodborne was honestly one of the most memorable playthroughs of every game I’ve played. I had no understanding of what was happening or why, then I found this video, and I’ve been watching Vaati ever since. This is easily one of my favorite vids, and I keep coming back for the grim, creepy tones and the story Vaati stitched together for us
During my first playthrough, all I was told was "A hoonter must hoont." And so hoont I did, I just hoonted everyone and everything in the game without a single clue on what's actually going on.

Come on Eileen, oh I swear.
At this moment, I'll hoont everything.
Par for the course in a SoulsBorne game. You might eventually work out “what the heck” is going on; but only if you’re lucky will you figure out “why”.
I think that's how most peoples first playthroughs go in from soft games tbh
"Dont think too hard about all this, just go out and slay a few beasts. Its for your own good."
I feel like this "higher state of consciousness" that everyone is lusting for, is just like a private chatroom where the old ones just sorta talk
“ hey guys come to my house later we got this guy to beat up the moon it’s gonna sick”
And then the Old Ones just show you their tentacle.

Hearing Gherman cry out to his friends to be freed from his dream like that hit me hard, its very frightening to think about being inprisoned and trapped somewhere with no hope of getting out. Great game though.
Also to add onto that, Lawrence was imprisoned in his own nightmare even when he's being called out to free Gherman

But the MC (if you take reach the childhood beginning ending), saves Gehrman by freeing him from his dream and his puppet master.

this is no poetry, this is a straight up tragedy.

- escape the horror and leave with your dreamy memories in guilt
-take the place of your teacher as a self sacrifise
-become an entity so different from your own self, that you propably can't even call it yourself anymore.

Well articulated - I kind of felt this without having a way to sum up why, and reading this totally spelled it out for me. Thanks!
Can't like this comment enough, love how you summed it up
Bloodborne's world is rich with history and lore, much of which has already unfolded by the time the player arrives.

Beautifuly said!
This needs to be a thing!
Freshly Memed some poor soul comes looking for a cure and ends up as a pawn to an eldritch abomination and even when you win, you lose.
And I thought modern medical insurance premiums were a pain...
Freshly Memed I mean the main character becomes a god so...not necessarily a bad deal

A video that is certainly among my favorites for several reasons!
woah this is an amazing theory
"Good hunter, let me free you from this evil
I devote my life to sustain the dream
Oh, the insidious moon
Oh, these mysterious nights
Great one, look upon me and grant everlasting mercy"
Is the rough translation of the latin lyrics in the Gehrman theme, in my opinion, it definitely lends credit to your theory :)
The 1st and 3rd sounds like the good endings
1st: you are basically relieved of duty after you defeated a great one
3rd: you ascend and become a god basically
3rd also has all the benefits of ending 2, what with freeing gehrman from the dream before the moon fight, without having to martyr yourself in the process.

Thanks for a calming voice in a restless time. It's probably a little twisted, but I find it somewhat comforting that we're dealing with straightforward disease rather than some eldritch nastiness.
I mean, I'm glad we don't have people turning into insane werewolf/alien/eldritch abominations too. I think that's a safe thing to say.
@@taitia8619 bro that would be like, so cool but so horrific
I dont think that's twisted at all. In fact, I feel the same. We are dealing with a terrifying disease, but at least we don't have to deal with going insane over just a glimpse of something eldritch.
I personally use dark fantasy and cosmic horror as an escapism, it really comforts me because I feel things cannot get any worse. I suppose it's a bit like the theory that the Book of Revelations was written so that the christains under persecution could take some sort of comfort in knowing there would be an ultimate end to everything.

@@VichyGlitterGun Just realised I saw your NG+ Bloodborne playthrough!
Your idea that true evolution requires both Blood and Insight to temper the flaws of each is compelling:
Blood: While it offers physical power and healing, it also risks inducing the beastly scourge.

The story telling, the fabulous environment, the small details, the emotionally grabbing music and how fantastic the eldrich horror was pulled off. Poor guy...
that is sad

This actually makes a lot of sense especially with the dreaming concept. I 100% support this theory
That makes a lot of sense!
Woah. That’s actually really cool! And it makes sense.
The Second Ending ("Childhood's Beginning"):
In this ending, the Moon Presence attempts to bind the player to the Hunter's Dream, similar to how Gehrman was bound.
