I lived in Louisville, KY for 28 years after attending Univ of Louisville Medical School. I had grown up in Davenport, IA so I can relate to the "learning experience" Dale Jr had with the KY Derby and horse racing in general. My parents ended up moving to KY too, and their next door neighbors happened to be Hall of Fame Female Jockey, PJ Cooksey and her husband John. John was the Head Outrider at Churchill Downs for MANY years. Needless to say, our family got an insiders view and experience of all things horse racing at Churchill Downs and it became as familiar to me as Stock Car Racing. Whenever I took my kids to the Churchill Downs for races, John would bring them down into the Paddock area with him before each race, and we'd all get to meet the owners and trainers. In 2007, when Jockey Calvin Borel won the Kentucky Derby on "Street Sense", my son was 13 years old. PJ Cooksey took him into the "Jockey's Locker Room" and he got to meet Calvin and take a picture with him. Even at just 13 years old, my son towered over Calvin in height!! The Kentucky Derby is a magical event that will forever hold a special place in my heart. It was awesome hearing Dale Jr share his experience....I can completely picture it all!! ~~Christy~~

I really like Amy. She just seems so, real. She's in the conversation in a way that adds to it. She doesn't seem unapproachable. You can tell that Dale and her have an incredible amount of chemistry. I'd bet she's just fun to hang out with. I'd bet they're both fun to just, you know, bust out the shine and tell lies, and have a great time with.
That was a great story. And having Amy there is perfect. Wow.

As a former broadcaster I am continuously amazed at your transformation into an excellent story teller. Your enthusiasm infects all those you work with and makes everybody and the whole broadcast better. It’s great to watch you become such a fantastic ambassador for NASCAR, especially when you branch out into unfamiliar territory like this. Keep doing what you’re doing, Dale. It’s working just fine.

I talked to someone this past weekend who attended Belmont last year, and they told me you have no idea how big and awesome those horses who run in those races are. I was told those horses are are more huge and majestic than you can imagine.

I’m not the biggest Kentucky Derby fan in the world or anything, but I could care less about it, too. To be honest, I’m sure I could care a lot less if it wasn’t so exciting.

Just FYI, the extra piece of track off of turn 2 is called the "chute" (most tracks also have one off of turn 4, but Churchill does not) and the riders who accompany the race horses on the track are called "outriders". I grew up around horse racing as my uncle was an owner and trainer when I was a kid.

I recall Dale Sr owning horses at Dover downs I think Steve Warrington trained them for Dale.
Dale is like a kid in this type situation, his wife is kinda like a mom, funny to watch.

I'm almost three years late hearing this, lol. "Turn two" by the *chute for sprints, hmm, haha, that whole side is one turn in horse racing. Dale wouldn't know that, funny to guy like me. For instance, the Kentucky Derby is a "two turn" race.

CarolinaGirl I KNOW! when I saw this interview I was thinking she reminded me of someone and I could t figure it out. It hit me literally within the last 30 seconds of this video.
