she has a soft and rich voice-easy to listen to then launches into high notes that take you by surprise-stunning video- good reaction-would like to hear your version of this maggie-stay safe-continued success-with you always
In her book she explained that up until this concert she had no idea she was famous because of how sheltered she was by Tommy she didn’t realise the crowd outside the theatre was all for her so that’s prob why she seems nervous
You’re right about the nerves. But just for context, prior to this performance, the world hasn’t heard this song yet as it still wasn’t released during that time. This is the very first time she performed this and i can imagine that she really wanted to make it perfect and was focusing on hitting the notes rather than just being in the moment. You should watch Hero live in Tokyo Dome. She is much more relaxed there and was just having fun with the song. Greatest live performance of this song too in my opinion :)
She was 23 here. Mariah shouldn't be classified as a soprano, she says she is more of an alto and is perceptible in her speaking voice. She can't be put in the Fach system for several reason: She is not being characterized for a choir in order to know where to place her. 2. Like I said before her speaking voice is really low. 3. Her vocal agility is present and proficient enough in every register she uses starting from her low chest voice all the into her whistle. 4. Her stamina and breath control is homogeneous through her range. 5. She can out do the range both low and high of a soprano, Mezzo and even alto her live range is F2 al the way to Bb7. 6 she has a mic and uses it accordingly for texture changes, capture different harmonics and inflections. So casing her in the Fach system undermines her insane ability to use her voice. "All hail and bow to Mariah Carey, The Queen of Divas, Protector of the vocal skills from the realm, Archiduchess of Vocal range/registers, Empress of agility, The unmatched, The Mellisma mother, The Goddess of Songwriting and producing, The one often imitated, but never duplicated, The embodiment of pure success",. My simpleton ears are not worthy of your talent but a simple sung phrase will be enough to heal me for all eternity.
Always like your reactions. Great to hear from a performeres point of view. It is very possible that she was nervous, because she does get much more nervous at things that are televised like award shows. If I'm not mistaken, this was a televised special. She is a lot more comfortable in her concerts with her fans. The live of this at Tokyo dome, I think, is one that you should look at.
Funny. I have watched this performance over 100 times. It's my favorite version of this song by her. Flawless and effortless from start to finish. She looked perfect and this is the prettiest she ever was. And zero nerves. I see no nervousness at all. Zippo
Yes this song was written specifically for Mariah’s voice. BY MARIAH. As were 18/19 of her number one hits. Excluding "I’ll Be There," written for the Jackson 5 by a team of writers.
I just wanted to comment that indeed she was nervous at the beginning. But slowly she started connecting with the emotions of the song. Beautiful one by the way. It reminds me of my hero GOD !😊
This song wasn't written for Mariah, she actually wrote it with Walter Afanasieff but she wasn't fond of the song and was going to give it to Gloria Estefan to sing it for the soundtrack of a film called "Hero" but Tommy told her to keep it. And after Tommy convinced her to keep it, she changed some of the lyrics to fit her personality. Don't forget Mariah is a highly prolific songwriter and has written 18 out of her 19 #1 Hot 100 singles. The most of any female artist. And I believe Mariah was connected to the song but that's just my opinion. But great reaction, please react to Mariah reflections live at home for the holidays. ❤
Maggie you should watch Angelina Jordan's rendition of this from her concert in Vegas last month.she puts the SOUL in it unfortunately it was recorded on a cellphone but its still very impressive. !!!
Yes, she is as young here as I was young at the same time. And for me, apart from the fact that she was the sex symbol of those years, she will also always remain a symbol of a "great voice". Beautiful vocal!! ❤ I will add that, in my opinion, Mariah put the brake on her own vocal abilities here. 🤣🤣🤣
She wrote it in one day for a movie. She was there and heard they looking for a song and then she sat there and wrote it but her husband Tomy told her to keep it. She didn't like it enough and was going to let Gloria sing it but change it and use it herself
Late to the party here, but if she is especially careful about her technique, it could be related to the fact that some music critics of the time suggested that she wouldn't be able to consistently produce the vocals heard on her albums. She did not tour early in her career, and that contributed to that speculation. As a result, the live performances we have, especially from her early years, tend to be incredibly good technically. Almost album quality vocals. It seems she didn't take kindly to people questioning her live performance ability.
Her mom might have just taught her the basic things, she has no formal vocal training only influences from and exposure to her favorite singers Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Minnie Riperton and Clark Sisters.
I prefer her Madison Square Garden version with that amazing choir (in 1995, if my memory serves well). The Tokyo Dome one in 1997 follows. Her voice is always agile as being nothing to her! Those upward & downward melismata are so artistry.
I disagree, I feel like she was quite connected to the song. Either way, I think if you just listen to it, you can feel the emotion in the voice so that's the main thing.
No disrespect of you at all but Mariah wrote this song so clearly feels it even if she doesn’t pretend to visually. This concert launched a career to where she’s now worth $350 million. There aren’t many singers that can even come close to her, I can on,y think of a few, so your standards might be a little unrealistic.
Fans trashed her early on (and thereafter), whereas Whitney's fans destroyed her more toward the middle of her career. Fan's feel they OWN singers, but fans are their most insidious evil for a career. You can never please them, so just be an artist and follow your own muse!
Don't blame the fans. Long, long before social media and fan pressure was a thing, the industry was destroying artists by forcing them to craft their art form to be profitable, same story in Hollywood. Tommy controlled Mariah, down to how she dressed! A movie exec and the music business being controlled by corporations trying to make money by what sells, and controlling artists like puppets for profit. Audiences are allowed to react the way they feel about the art produced, whether they love it or hate it, no one can expect to be universally adored at all times.
Not a fan of Mariah Carey at all, this is one of the few songs with her that I like, but I have to just say that the hand gestures is her thing. She always does them even now.
perhaps you've never seen her live? I have and she had great stage presence, interacted with audience between songs and didn't charge thousands of dollars like the rest of the singers out there.

The greatest vocalist of all time
In her book she explained that up until this concert she had no idea she was famous because of how sheltered she was by Tommy she didn’t realise the crowd outside the theatre was all for her so that’s prob why she seems nervous
That’s frightening
This was shocking to find out when I read her book.

Mariah had it even when young, even live. Very nice reaction and analysis. 🦸🏻♀

Thanks for reacting to the Queen❤
This song has gotten me through some of my biggest struggles in my life. Thank you for the inspiration
This is the first time Mariah performed for her actual fans! 3 years into her career, I can imagine there would be a TON of nerves here lol.
No it isn’t she did unplugged before this
Mariah in her audiobook said up until this concert at 1993 proctors theaters show didn’t know how famous she was. Explains the wondering eyes🤣❤️
Her voice is on another level 💯❤️ Great reaction 😊 Can you please react to Mariah’s “Without You” live @ Tokyo Dome

Say it louder for the uncultured in the back!
She actually wrote it for Gloria Estafans voice, but Tommy said she has to keep it for herself
Hero intended to write it for Gloria Estefan, I wish she wrote some songs for Whitney or Celine.
I just wanted to comment that indeed she was nervous at the beginning. But slowly she started connecting with the emotions of the song. Beautiful one by the way. It reminds me of my hero GOD !😊
Beautiful song...and reaction. And reactor...

Thank you
That is just her body language when she performs. Is now, and always has been.
Mariahs mother is Juilliard trained like you.
Had a major crush on Mariah at this age
No way in hell somebody would not heard this most famous song...
Can you check out her singing Vision of love live in Tokyo dome in 1996 next please...thanks..🎉
yes please this 👆🏼
Mariah I love you 😍 ❤
She is the composer of her song haha
Her eyes moving up was because there were audience members up there too.
Very true. You're observation about her singing....
Interesting as she grows into a comfort zone as the song progresses
mariah writes her own music hero was written by her and Walter
This was first time she sing this live. Look later performances for more " in the song" type of performances of this song. 😏
Maggie you should watch Angelina Jordan's rendition of this from her concert in Vegas last month.she puts the SOUL in it unfortunately it was recorded on a cellphone but its still very impressive. !!!

The greatest live performance of this song is on Arsenio Hall
When she wrote this song, it was meant for someone else to sing. But she was advised to keep it for herself.
Suprema premum sublime magica
Pretty sure she songwrote this one too
Her mother was a trained opera singer and she trained her daughter. Mariah is amazing
Not really mariah said she never actually trained her they would do exercises from time to time.
Her mom might have just taught her the basic things, she has no formal vocal training only influences from and exposure to her favorite singers Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Minnie Riperton and Clark Sisters.
👍❤️❤️

stu
Written for Derek Jeter
She didn’t even know him then wtf 😂🙄
Mariah wrote that song its not written for her
Not a fan of Mariah Carey at all, this is one of the few songs with her that I like, but I have to just say that the hand gestures is her thing. She always does them even now.
Isn't she supposed to have a 3-octave range.
No.. she has a 5-6 octave range😂
@@BaddieRiah I am corrected.
Mariah is a great singer but in my humble opinion she never really had any stage presence
perhaps you've never seen her live? I have and she had great stage presence, interacted with audience between songs and didn't charge thousands of dollars like the rest of the singers out there.
Just go watch her perform
"Just Be Good To Me." Live at the Tokyo Dome, if you want to see stage presence.
She looks nervous in this performance. She apparently didn’t realise how famous she was at this moment because her husband sheltered her from it
The greatest vocalist of all time
